Not Offending, but Forgiving

Not Offending, but Forgiving
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 17:1 And He said to His disciples, It is impossible for
causes of stumbling not to come, but woe to him through whom
they come. (2) It is more profitable for him if a millstone is
put around his neck and he is hurled into the sea than to
stumble one of these little ones. (3) Take heed to yourselves.
If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive
him. (4) And if he sins against you seven times in a day and
turns again to you seven times, saying, I repent, you shall
forgive him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the church life, the church service, and the Lord's ministry
it is a very serious thing to offend others. Sometimes it seems
that we can accomplish a great deal. Nevertheless, we may tear
down more than we build up. This is the result of stumbling
others. When I was young I was given the following admonition:
"Don't do the Lord's work in such a way that you build up one
foot and then tear down a foot and a half." According to this
admonition, it is possible for us first to build up and then to
tear down more than what we have built up. We need to learn from
this not to stumble others and thereby tear down what has been
built up. We always need to be careful and cautious not to hurt
others, not to offend others, and not to stumble others.

If we are offended by someone, we need to be ready and willing
to forgive that one. Then we shall not have problems with
others. To forgive means not to be offended. According to the
Lord's word in 17:4, even if a brother sins against us seven
times a day, we should always be ready to forgive him. As soon
as we forgive someone, we shall not be offended by him. But if
we do not forgive, we shall be offended. The point here is that
forgiving annuls offending.

Suppose a certain brother offends you, and you forgive him. Your
forgiving of him will annul his offending of you. Then there
will be no problem between you. However, suppose this brother
offends you, and you are not willing to forgive him and forget
the offense. This will cause trouble, especially to you, for you
will become entangled as the result of being offended. Hence, we
should avoid stumbling others, and we should also avoid being
offended by others. We should always be careful and cautious not
to offend others. At the same time, we should always be willing
to forgive others.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Beauty in Silence, by Rubel Shelly

Famed mime Marcel Marceau died several weeks ago at age 84. He was the
lithe, graceful, and expressive artist who could make us believe he was
climbing stairs where there were none, pressing his hands against a
pane of glass that was not there, and leaning into a wind that was not
blowing.

The most expressive part of his repertoire emerged as he matured. He
could trigger worlds of thought and sentiment in us by the tilt of an
eyebrow or with a smile. His signature "Youth, Maturity, Old Age and
Death" carried one through the course of an entire human life in four
to five minutes. As people got older, they watched with deeper passion
and understanding. But even the young who witnessed it were drawn into
deep reflection on the meaning of life.

Perhaps the silent beauty of Marceau resonated for people for half a
century because of the addiction to noise that complicates life for
most of us.

I confess it. I am addicted to the noise of a TV I am not watching and
the music or talk on my car radio I am not hearing. Maybe that is why
one of the spiritual disciplines is silence.

As you drive home from work this afternoon, leave the radio off!

As a spiritual discipline, silence is the deliberate shutting away of
people and things that intrude noise into one's consciousness so that
it can be fully attuned to God. It is being still, so we can know that
God is sovereign -- and we are not. It is refusing to be distracted
from the divine presence. It is being quiet, reflective, and open to
the very voice of God.

Silence, which almost always requires solitude, is a humbling thing for
the powerful. It reminds them that the real power in this cosmos is in
the voice of God, not in their instructions for and demands upon their
peers. It is also uplifting to the not-so-powerful, for it reminds them
that there is only one voice that must be heard. Even in our weakness,
God will not abandon us.

As you drive home from work this afternoon, leave the radio off and
reflect on the presence of God with you or some divine attribute for
which you are especially grateful right now. In the quiet few moments
before you fall asleep tonight or before you get out of bed in the
morning, focus on the Lord and turn over a favorite passage of
Scripture.

An artist reminded us that silence sometimes says more than words can.
God waits to be our teacher in the still moments we share with him.
Thus he calls us: "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10).

Morning & Evening -- Zechariah 14:7 and 1 John 2:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, October 4, 2007

MORNING:

"At evening time it shall be light."
-- Zechariah 14:7

Oftentimes we look forward with forebodings to the time of old age,
forgetful that at eventide it shall be light. To many saints, old age
is the choicest season in their lives. A balmier air fans the mariner's
cheek as he nears the shore of immortality, fewer waves ruffle his sea,
quiet reigns, deep, still and solemn. From the altar of age the flashes
of the fire of youth are gone, but the more real flame of earnest
feeling remains. The pilgrims have reached the land Beulah, that happy
country, whose days are as the days of heaven upon earth. Angels visit
it, celestial gales blow over it, flowers of paradise grow in it, and
the air is filled with seraphic music. Some dwell here for years, and
others come to it but a few hours before their departure, but it is an
Eden on earth. We may well long for the time when we shall recline in
its shady groves and be satisfied with hope until the time of fruition
comes. The setting sun seems larger than when aloft in the sky, and a
splendour of glory tinges all the clouds which surround his going down.
Pain breaks not the calm of the sweet twilight of age, for strength
made perfect in weakness bears up with patience under it all. Ripe
fruits of choice experience are gathered as the rare repast of life's
evening, and the soul prepares itself for rest.

The Lord's people shall also enjoy light in the hour of death. Unbelief
laments; the shadows fall, the night is coming, existence is ending. Ah
no, crieth faith, the night is far spent, the true day is at hand.
Light is come, the light of immortality, the light of a Father's
countenance. Gather up thy feet in the bed, see the waiting bands of
spirits! Angels waft thee away. Farewell, beloved one, thou art gone,
thou wavest thine hand. Ah, now it is light. The pearly gates are open,
the golden streets shine in the jasper light. We cover our eyes, but
thou beholdest the unseen; adieu, brother, thou hast light at
even-tide, such as we have not yet.

EVENING:

"If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus
Christ the righteous."
-- 1 John 2:1

"If any man sin, we have an advocate." Yes, though we sin, we have him
still. John does not say, "If any man sin he has forfeited his
advocate," but "we have an advocate," sinners though we are. All the
sin that a believer ever did, or can be allowed to commit, cannot
destroy his interest in the Lord Jesus Christ, as his advocate. The
name here given to our Lord is suggestive. "Jesus." Ah! then he is an
advocate such as we need, for Jesus is the name of one whose business
and delight it is to save. "They shall call his name Jesus, for he
shall save his people from their sins." His sweetest name implies his
success. Next, it is "Jesus Christ"-Christos, the anointed. This shows
his authority to plead. The Christ has a right to plead, for he is the
Father's own appointed advocate and elected priest. If he were of our
choosing he might fail, but if God hath laid help upon one that is
mighty, we may safely lay our trouble where God has laid his help. He
is Christ, and therefore authorized; he is Christ, and therefore
qualified, for the anointing has fully fitted him for his work. He can
plead so as to move the heart of God and prevail. What words of
tenderness, what sentences of persuasion will the anointed use when he
stands up to plead for me! One more letter of his name remains, "Jesus
Christ the righteous." This is not only his character BUT his plea. It
is his character, and if the Righteous One be my advocate, then my
cause is good, or he would not have espoused it. It is his plea, for he
meets the charge of unrighteousness against me by the plea that he is
righteous. He declares himself my substitute and puts his obedience to
my account. My soul, thou hast a friend well fitted to be thine
advocate, he cannot but succeed; leave thyself entirely in his hands.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Vision And The Verity"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 4, 2007

THE VISION AND THE VERITY

Called to be saints.

1 Corinthians 1:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+1:2&sr=1

Thank God for the sight of all you have never yet been. You have had
the vision, but you are not there yet by any means. It is when we are
in the valley, where we prove whether we will be the choice ones,
that most of us turn back. We are not quite prepared for the blows
which must come if we are going to be turned into the shape of the
vision. We have seen what we are not, and what God wants us to be,
but are we willing to have the vision "batter'd to shape and use" by
God? The batterings always come in commonplace ways and through
commonplace people.

There are times when we do know what God's purpose is; whether we
will let the vision be turned into actual character depends upon us,
not upon God. If we prefer to loll on the mount and live in the
memory of the vision, we will be of no use actually in the ordinary
stuff of which human life is made up. We have to learn to live in
reliance on what we saw in the vision, not in ecstasies and conscious
contemplation of God, but to live in actualities in the light of the
vision until we get to the veritable reality. Every bit of our
training is in that direction. Learn to thank God for making known
His demands.

The little "I am" always sulks when God says do. Let the little "I
am" be shrivelled up in God's indignation - "I AM THAT I AM hath sent
thee." He must dominate. Is it not penetrating to realize that God
knows where we live, and the kennels we crawl into! He will hunt us
up like a lightning flash. No human being knows human beings as God
does.

Mustard Seed Thought: Loaves, Part 4

Then Jesus declared, "I Am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty. John 6:35 NIV

I almost see this statement of Christ as being humorous. You know the story. We have talked about it all week. The people were looking for Jesus because they wanted their next miracle fix. Jesus read their heart quickly. Here He tells them they have missed it! They have been looking for bread, and they had already found it! He is the Bread!

Often in my life, I look for the blessings of God, anticipating that they will be just as I imagined them to be. Sometimes, however, I find out later that God's blessing was already there, just in a different form than I would have suspected. God has a way of doing things His own way, and it is not always my way!

Many times, the direction I thought was best, turns out to be wrong. I find that had I waited on God, or if I had looked for His blessings, the situation would have turned out correctly from the beginning.

Following Christ is not rocket science. In fact, He tries to make it rather easy. Trust Him completely and He will provide for all our needs. Rely only on Him and we will not have to worry about life. When we place our desires upon Him, He gives us the desires of our heart. Say it however you want, but the point is the same, God wants us to trust in Him.

Oh, if you and I will only do that today! He is worthy of that trust!

NO FEAR IN CHRIST

Hebrews 13:6-8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Hebrews+13:6-8

Dear Father,

Help me say with confidence: The Lord is my helper. I will not be
afraid. What can man do to me?

I remember those who led me to Christ by speaking his word to me.
Thank you for them. Bless them abundantly. Help me to imitate their
faith.

And most of all, thank you for Jesus Christ, who forever remains
true to me. Thank you, my God, that he is the same yesterday,
today, and for ever.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Even a Little Is Very Powerful

The Lord said, "If your faith is as big as a mustard seed,
then you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Dig yourself up and
plant yourself in the ocean!' And the tree will obey you."

-- Luke 17:6 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
At first glance, Jesus appears to be making an incredible promise. On a
closer look, however, this is a reprimand. Even a little faith is
powerful. They would have so much more impact on their world if they
could muster even a little faith. Sadly, so much doesn't get done to
bless others and to honor God because we have such little faith. Let's
be people of faith!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Lord God Almighty, challenge me, stir me, move me, motivate me to live
by faith and not by sight. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 Corinthians 6:11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 4, 2007

VERSE:
That is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were
sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
and by the Spirit of our God.
-- 1 Corinthians 6:11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+6:11

THOUGHT:
Following a list of vices, both scandalous and common, Paul
finishes with this incredible word of grace. We all have a tendency
to live in the land of "I-used-to-be." For some of us, our past
accomplishments become our excuse to live in the arrogant afterglow
of yesterday. Paul wrote Philippians 3:4b-9 for this group. For
others of us, the wounds and sins of our past become the bag of
rocks we drag with us through the rest of life. We take those
"rancid rocks" out and inspect them once again to our misery. We
use them as proof of why we can't move on with our lives. What a
glorious awakening Paul gives us in this passage. In Christ, there
are no more bags and no more rocks. We're clean! We're made holy!
We're declared innocent of any wrongdoing. How? Why? Who? The
sacrifice and triumph of Jesus and the powerful work of the Holy
Spirit.

PRAYER:
Forgive me, Father, for lingering on yesterdays, ruining my
todays, and clouding up my tomorrows. Help me with my tendency to
live in the land of "I-used-to-be." Give me the courage to believe
that you have put my past in its proper place and want to do a new
glorious thing in me today, a glorious and gracious thing that
brings you honor and me salvation! In Jesus' name I thank you.
Amen.
