=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

It Doesn't Require Better Skills, by Ron Rose

In 2004 a low budget, independent film, called Napoleon Dynamite made a
high school misfit named Napoleon into a pop culture icon. In one of
the storylines, Napoleon wants to get a date with a popular girl named
Trisha, but he doesn't think he's good enough. He talks openly with his
new friend Pedro:

Napoleon: Well, nobody's going to go out with ME!

Pedro: Have you asked anybody yet?

Napoleon: No, but who would? I don't even have any good skills.

Pedro: What do you mean?

Napoleon: You know, like nunchuk skills, bow-hunting skills,
computer hacking skills. Girls only want boyfriends who have great
skills.

Pedro: Aren't you pretty good at drawing, like animals and warriors
and stuff?

Napoleon: Yes ... probably the best that I know of.

Try the impossible!

Pedro: Just draw a picture of the girl you want to take out ... and
give it to her for like a gift or something.

Napoleon: That's a pretty good idea.

Truth is, his drawings are horrible, but he doesn't know it. He is
blissfully unaware of the social world around him, but he has an innate
conviction that you have to have skills before anyone will care about
you. Somewhere he has accepted the misconception that love is based on
the right set of skills.

In real life, we struggle with a similar misconception. Deep down we
wonder if we are good enough to be loved by the God who made us. At
times, doubt wiggles its way into our alone moments ... Am I good
enough or strong enough? Do I know enough? Am I right enough or skilled
enough? Am I really worthy enough to be part of God's family, much less
a faith giant in the kingdom?

No! You don't have access to enough "enough-ness" to make it ... but
God does. It's all about him. God has a net of grace that works all the
time in spite of our inadequacies and insufficiencies ... he is enough,
more than enough. So work on; stretch out; try the impossible. He has
the skills.

Morning & Evening -- Ephesians 1:3 and Song of Solomon 7:11,12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, May 9, 2008

MORNING:

"Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings."
-- Ephesians 1:3

All the goodness of the past, the present, and the future, Christ
bestows upon his people. In the mysterious ages of the past the Lord
Jesus was his Father's first elect, and in his election he gave us an
interest, for we were chosen in him from before the foundation of the
world. He had from all eternity the prerogatives of Sonship, as his
Father's only-begotten and well-beloved Son, and he has, in the riches
of his grace, by adoption and regeneration, elevated us to sonship
also, so that to us he has given "power to become the sons of God." The
eternal covenant, based upon suretiship and confirmed by oath, is ours,
for our strong consolation and security. In the everlasting settlements
of predestinating wisdom and omnipotent decree, the eye of the Lord
Jesus was ever fixed on us; and we may rest assured that in the whole
roll of destiny there is not a line which militates against the
interests of his redeemed. The great betrothal of the Prince of Glory
is ours, for it is to us that he is affianced, as the sacred nuptials
shall ere long declare to an assembled universe. The marvellous
incarnation of the God of heaven, with all the amazing condescension
and humiliation which attended it, is ours. The bloody sweat, the
scourge, the cross, are ours for ever. Whatever blissful consequences
flow from perfect obedience, finished atonement, resurrection,
ascension, or intercession, all are ours by his own gift. Upon his
breastplate he is now bearing our names; and in his authoritative
pleadings at the throne he remembers our persons and pleads our cause.
his dominion over principalities and powers, and his absolute majesty
in heaven, he employs for the benefit of them who trust in him. His
high estate is as much at our service as was his condition of
abasement. He who gave himself for us in the depths of woe and death,
doth not withdraw the grant now that he is enthroned in the highest
heavens.

EVENING:

"Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field ... let us
see if the vine flourish."
-- Song of Solomon 7:11,12

The church was about to engage in earnest labour, and desired her
Lord's company in it. She does not say, "I will go," but "let us go."
It is blessed working when Jesus is at our side! It is the business of
God's people to be trimmers of God's vines. Like our first parents, we
are put into the garden of the Lord for usefulness; let us therefore go
forth into the field. Observe that the church, when she is in her right
mind, in all her many labours desires to enjoy communion with Christ.
Some imagine that they cannot serve Christ actively, and yet have
fellowship with him: they are mistaken. Doubtless it is very easy to
fritter away our inward life in outward exercises, and come to complain
with the spouse, "They made me keeper of the vineyards; but mine own
vineyard have I not kept:" but there is no reason why this should be
the case except our own folly and neglect. Certain is it that a
professor may do nothing, and yet grow quite as lifeless in spiritual
things as those who are most busy. Mary was not praised for sitting
still; but for her sitting at Jesus' feet. Even so, Christians are not
to be praised for neglecting duties under the pretence of having secret
fellowship with Jesus: it is not sitting, but sitting at Jesus' feet
which is commendable. Do not think that activity is in itself an evil:
it is a great blessing, and a means of grace to us. Paul called it a
grace given to him to be allowed to preach; and every form of Christian
service may become a personal blessing to those engaged in it. Those
who have most fellowship with Christ are not recluses or hermits, who
have much time to spare, but indefatigable labourers who are toiling
for Jesus, and who, in their toil, have him side by side with them, so
that they are workers together with God. Let us remember then, in
anything we have to do for Jesus, that we can do it, and should do it
in close communion with him.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Grasp Without Reach"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 9, 2008

GRASP WITHOUT REACH

Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint.

Proverbs 29:18

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=pr+29:18&sr=1

There is a difference between an ideal and a vision. An ideal has no
moral inspiration; a vision has. The people who give themselves over
to ideals rarely do anything. A man's conception of Deity may be used
to justify his deliberate neglect of his duty. Jonah argued that
because God was a God of justice and of mercy, therefore everything
would be all right. I may have a right conception of God, and that
may be the very reason why I do not do my duty. But wherever there is
vision, there is also a life of rectitude because the vision imparts
moral incentive.

Ideals may lull to ruin. Take stock of yourself spiritually and see
whether you have ideals only or if you have vision.

"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what's a heaven for?"

"Where there is no vision. . . ." When once we lose sight of God, we
begin to be reckless, we cast off certain restraints, we cast off
praying, we cast off the vision of God in little things, and begin to
act on our own initiative. If we are eating what we have out of our
own hand, doing things on our own initiative without expecting God to
come in, we are on the downward path, we have lost the vision. Is our
attitude to-day an attitude that springs from our vision of God? Are
we expecting God to do greater things than He has ever done? Is there
a freshness and vigour in our spiritual out look?

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Life Giving Bread 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Life Giving Bread 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. John 6:11 NIV

In the Old Testament, as we saw yesterday, God supplied His people with manna. They were hungry and He gave them something to eat. Here is a New Testament example of the same thing; God providing for His people.

Jesus had come into the world. The Savior, who was One of the Trinity, was walking among the people. Times were different. God's people now had incomes. Though the Roman government was in control, God's people still participated in the commerce of the day. The difference in this New Testament story and the Old Testament story we looked at yesterday is that in today's story they just didn't have any food with them. They had not planned on staying all day and they didn't bring a picnic lunch.

In the Old Testament passage, the Israelites had no other means of support than God. They were in the m iddle of no where. They had left the commerce of Egypt and were on their own. They had to trust God. They had no choice.

I have experienced both scenarios in my life. I have had times where I had plenty, and really didn't have to depend on God, and then I have had times when I had nowhere else to turn except God. In either case, I can honestly say that God has met my needs regardless of what they were.

What about you? Where are you at right now? Do you need all of God? Is He your only resort? Or are things pretty good in your life right now? All you really would like is a little picnic lunch.

One thing is the same in the Old Testament passage and in the New: People need the Bread of Life. Whatever you need, wherever you are, God is able to make all grace abound to you. You can trust Him to supply your heart with that which will truly satisfy.

Afterall, He is the BREAD OF LIFE!

Praying with Paul : "Lessons from Nature"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

LESSONS FROM NATURE

1 Corinthians 15:35-46

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:35-46

Dear Father, rewarder of all who diligently seek you,

Thank you for the lessons in nature that teach truths about your
kingdom. Help me to learn from these examples so that I might
understand more about you. Just as bare kernels of grain sown in
the ground do not germinate and become plants unless they first
"die," so too my old nature must die before your new life can
germinate in me. And so it is with the resurrection of believers.
We are perishable, but you will raise us to be imperishable. We are
dishonorable, but you will raise us up in glory. We are weak, but
you will raise us in power. We are sustained by nature, but you
will raise us to be sustained by your spirit.

At last we will have learned to live in total dependence on you!
Prepare us for this future time by teaching us to totally depend on
you now! We praise you, Almighty Father, for you intend to make us
immortal and to share your good things with us forever, because you
love us.

Thank you, Father, thank you. In the name of Jesus I lift this
prayer. Amen.

WJD! -- Concerned about the Hunger -- Mark 8:1-3

Concerned about the Hunger

Another time there were many people {with Jesus}. The people
had nothing to eat. So Jesus called his followers to him.
Jesus said, "I feel sorry for these people. They have been
with me for three days. And now they have nothing to eat. I
should not send them home hungry. If they leave without
eating, they will faint while going home. Some of these
people live a long way from here."

-- Mark 8:1-3 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Two concerns are on Jesus' heart. First, he cares about the physical
needs, especially the hunger, of the crowd that has been following him.
Second, how can he help his disciples learn to trust that he will help
them minister in situations beyond their ability? In this story, Jesus
will help make sure both concerns are addressed. For me, this story is
a reminder that ministry needs to occur on two fronts. First, we need
to be raising up folks to help minister to others, using the gifts that
God has given them. That means involving them in ministry and helping
them learn to depend upon the Christ they serve. If you have a ministry
in which you now serve, then get others involved with you! If you do
not have a ministry, find someone working in an area in which you are
interested and ask to go along and learn to minister with them. Second,
we must care for the needs of others -- not just their spiritual needs,
but also their physical needs. Jesus shows us a powerful way to do both
things at once in this story.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I pray that you will use me to serve others and to train others
to serve. Please lead me to people I can effectively serve with your
grace and help me to not only see the opportunity to serve, but to
follow through on that opportunity as well. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 9, 2008

VERSE:
For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive
salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that,
whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+5:9-10

THOUGHT:
God didn't save us to condemn us. No, he saved us so we could
come home to him and enjoy his gracious presence for eternity. God
wants us in his presence; that's what salvation is all about! He is
not about to let anything keep us from that presence when our
hearts belong to him!

PRAYER:
Loving Father, thank you for the confidence I have in Jesus! I
know that whether I live till Jesus comes or if I were to die this
day, I can have confidence that my future is with you because it is
tied to Jesus' victory over death. Thank you for giving me a home
with you as my ultimate future. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
