=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Agony to Maturity, by Phil Ware

"I hate church. It's full of a bunch of hypocrites."

This caricature of church as a gathering of a bunch of hypocrites is so
overused that it has become trite. Yes, churches are full of flawed
people, many of whom are trying to be good folks. I admit that I am one
of those flawed, far from perfect people. Yes, we sometimes let
immaturity, weakness, and rebelliousness sometimes get the better of
us. The truth is, the place we often hate hypocrisy the most is when we
see it in ourselves!

When we come to Christ -- when we confess Him as Lord and share with
Him in His death, burial, and resurrection through faith in baptism --
our lives are joined to Him (Colossians 2:9-15). Because of what He has
done in His physical body on the Cross, God presents us before His
throne as "holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation"
(Colossians 1:21-22 TNIV).

As we stand there drippin' wet, having received Christ and shared with
Him in baptism, God chooses to view our imperfection through Jesus'
perfection! The problem is that the Church is where the gap between our
"drippin' wet perfection" collides with the "down to earth reality" of
our failures, faults, and flubs. Our life in Christ is spent trying to
live up to who we are because of God's grace (Colossians 1:23). When we
share in Jesus' glory, we'll also share in the reality of His
perfection (Colossians 3:3-4; 1 John 3:1-3). Until then, we are to
focus on closing the gap between our "drippin' wet perfection" and our
"down to earth reality" (Colossians 3:1-2). This is our journey to
maturity, seeking after the perfection of Jesus in our day-to-day
lives.

One of the reasons God gives us spiritual leaders is to help us close
this gap. Their temptation, and ours as well, is to reach for a handy
little list and say, "Here, do this and you will be godly." The reality
is that rules, laws, and lists cannot help us close that gap. Yes,
there are times when we need clear guidance on what is moral and not
moral, what pleases God and displeases Him, but knowing that can't make
us what we seek. In fact, trying to close the gap by such methods can
end up making us what we do not want to be -- hypocrites (Colossians
2:16-23).

But if God gives us spiritual leaders to help us close this gap, what
should we expect of them? What are their primary tasks as shepherds of
our souls?

God's leaders are to "strenuously contend" (literally, "labor
agonizingly") to help us close this gap and present us mature,
complete, and perfect in Christ (Colossians 1:28-2:5). Jesus must be
the model, the message, the motivation, and the means to this goal (Colossians
2:6-15). The leader's task in this process is focused on three key
areas.

First, we need our spiritual leaders to point us to Jesus (Colossians
1:28-29), proclaiming Jesus to us, correcting us when we lose our
passion for the character of Jesus, and teaching us the way of life of
Jesus. This is not just helping us get to know data about Jesus, but
actually helping us find practical wisdom to live like Him -- with His
values, His character and compassion.

Second, our leaders need to help pray us to maturity (Colossians 4:12).
Prayer releases the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit into
our lives. When the content of a leader's prayers is shared with us,
this prayer also furnishes spiritual direction, affirmation, and hope (Colossians
1:9-12). Read carefully the apostle Paul's prayers in the letters he
writes to the churches. These prayers are powerful and offer great
hope, affirmation, and direction to the followers of Jesus trying to
close the gap!

We often want our leaders to be the church customer service department.

Third, spiritual leaders must depend on the power of Christ to do what
they do (Colossians 1:29). Human leaders are no match for the power of
the evil one trying to distract and destroy Jesus' work in our lives (Ephesians
6:10-12). We need to see God's power at work in our leaders' lives so
we can trust it is at work in our own.

I want to challenge you to pray and to call for your spiritual leaders
to stay on task! So often, we want our spiritual leaders to do nothing
more than act like our church customer service department and fix every
thing we don't like or appreciate. Let's not let the devil, and our
culture of consumerism, distract us from the goal, being like Jesus.
Let's call our leaders to a higher calling so they don't have to waste
their efforts on surface issues, but help us find our substance in
Christlike living.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd love to hear from you about your take on this article. Please look
at the following questions and share your responses on my blog:
http://blogs.heartlight.org/phil/?p=261

Do you think I'm off base when I suggest that we expect our spiritual
leaders to be the customer service department of our churches?

Clearly there are other things leaders do to "shepherd our souls" other
than these three things from Colossians. What one other thing has a
leader done to bless your walk in the Lord?

Reading Hebrews 13:7, 17, 24, what should we do to help honor and
encourage godly leadership in our churches?

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 30:6 and Job 14:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, March 10, 2008

MORNING:

"In my prosperity I said I shall never be moved."
-- Psalms 30:6

"Moab settled on his lees, he hath not been emptied from vessel to
vessel." Give a man wealth; let his ships bring home continually rich
freights; let the winds and waves appear to be his servants to bear his
vessels across the bosom of the mighty deep; let his lands yield
abundantly: let the weather be propitious to his crops; let
uninterrupted success attend him; let him stand among men as a
successful merchant; let him enjoy continued health; allow him with
braced nerve and brilliant eye to march through the world, and live
happily; give him the buoyant spirit; let him have the song perpetually
on his lips; let his eye be ever sparkling with joy-and the natural
consequence of such an easy state to any man, let him be the best
Christian who ever breathed, will be presumption; even David said, "I
shall never be moved;" and we are not better than David, nor half so
good. Brother, beware of the smooth places of the way; if you are
treading them, or if the way be rough, thank God for it. If God should
always rock us in the cradle of prosperity; if we were always dandled
on the knees of fortune; if we had not some stain on the alabaster
pillar; if there were not a few clouds in the sky; if we had not some
bitter drops in the wine of this life, we should become intoxicated
with pleasure, we should dream "we stand;" and stand we should, but it
would be upon a pinnacle; like the man asleep upon the mast, each
moment we should be in jeopardy.

We bless God, then, for our afflictions; we thank him for our changes;
we extol his name for losses of property; for we feel that had he not
chastened us thus, we might have become too secure. Continued worldly
prosperity is a fiery trial.

"Afflictions, though they seem severe,
In mercy oft are sent."

EVENING:

"Man ... is of few days, and full of trouble."
-- Job 14:1

It may be of great service to us, before we fall asleep, to remember
this mournful fact, for it may lead us to set loose by earthly things.
There is nothing very pleasant in the recollection that we are not
above the shafts of adversity, but it may humble us and prevent our
boasting like the Psalmist in our morning's portion. "My mountain
standeth firm: I shall never be moved." It may stay us from taking too
deep root in this soil from which we are so soon to be transplanted
into the heavenly garden. Let us recollect the frail tenure upon which
we hold our temporal mercies. If we would remember that all the trees
of earth are marked for the woodman's axe, we should not be so ready to
build our nests in them. We should love, but we should love with the
love which expects death, and which reckons upon separations. Our dear
relations are but loaned to us, and the hour when we must return them
to the lender's hand may be even at the door. The like is certainly
true of our worldly goods. Do not riches take to themselves wings and
fly away? Our health is equally precarious. Frail flowers of the field,
we must not reckon upon blooming for ever. There is a time appointed
for weakness and sickness, when we shall have to glorify God by
suffering, and not by earnest activity. There is no single point in
which we can hope to escape from the sharp arrows of affliction; out of
our few days there is not one secure from sorrow. Man's life is a cask
full of bitter wine; he who looks for joy in it had better seek for
honey in an ocean of brine. Beloved reader, set not your affections
upon things of earth: but seek those things which are above, for here
the moth devoureth, and the thief breaketh through, but there all joys
are perpetual and eternal. The path of trouble is the way home. Lord,
make this thought a pillow for many a weary head!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Have A Message And Be One"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 10, 2008

HAVE A MESSAGE AND BE ONE

Preach the word.

2 Timothy 4:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2ti+4:2&sr=1

We are not saved to be "channels only," but to be sons and daughters
of God. We are not turned into spiritual mediums, but into spiritual
messengers; the message must be part of ourselves. The Son of God was
His own message, His words were spirit and life; and as His disciples
our lives must be the sacrament of our message. The natural heart
will do any amount of serving, but it takes the heart broken by
conviction of sin, and baptized by the Holy Ghost, and crumpled into
the purpose of God before the life becomes the sacrament of its
message.

There is a difference between giving a testimony and preaching. A
preacher is one who has realized the call of God and is determined to
use his every power to proclaim God's truth. God takes us out of our
own ideas for our lives and we are "batter'd to shape and use," as
the disciples were after Pentecost. Pentecost did not teach the
disciples any thing; it made them the incarnation of what they
preached - "Ye shall be witnesses unto Me."

Let God have perfect liberty when you speak. Before God's message can
liberate other souls, the liberation must be real in you. Gather your
material, and set it alight when you speak.

THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST

1 Corinthians 1:10-13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+1:10-13

Dear Father, to whom I owe full obedience,

Let my attitude be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who made
himself nothing and obeyed you, even in the matter of dying.

May I humbly and obediently exalt Jesus, even as you have exalted
him and given him a name that is above every name, that every knee
should bow and every tongue confess - to your glory, our God and
our Father.

In the name of Jesus Christ, the source of our unity and
salvation, I ask these things. Amen.

WJD! -- More Than a Mustard Seed -- Mark 4:30-32

More Than a Mustard Seed

Then Jesus said, "What can I use to show you what the kingdom
of God is like? What story can I use to explain it? The
kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. The mustard seed is
the smallest seed that you plant in the ground. But when you
plant this seed, it grows and becomes the largest of all the
plants in your garden. It has branches that are very big. The
wild birds can come and make nests there and be protected
from the sun."

-- Mark 4:30-32 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
If mystery and movement were the heart of Jesus' Kingdom message
yesterday, today his message is about power and grace. The Kingdom
appears small in the face of the world's political and military powers.
However, the Kingdom we see is only a seed, not the fully mature
shelter. But the Kingdom is growing and will be large enough to furnish
safety and security for those who live in its branches. Don't be
afraid, dear Kingdom seeker; the God who propels the mustard seed to
great growth is at work in his Kingdom to do far greater things than we
can ask or imagine. So find your shelter in this Kingdom. All others
will pass away, but this one will endure -- forever.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O LORD my God, how awesome are your works in all the earth. The beauty
and diversity of your creation astound me. Yet I realize that as
beautiful as this physical world I can see may be, the unseen realm of
your Kingdom, majesty, and might are far greater still! Even those bits
and glimpses of your Kingdom I experience now are wonderful. I look
forward to the day when they are visible to all. Until that day,
shelter me in the embrace of your Kingdom and grace. In Jesus' name.
Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: God's Comfort One

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
God's Comfort One
Comforting Words By: Ron Edmondson
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. Psalm 119:50 NIV

Have you ever heard that the end justifies the means? I think that statement basically means that the final outcome is really what is important in a situation. Sometimes getting to a solution may be tough, but if the ending is good, it will be worth the effort getting there.

This week I want to talk about the comfort of God. I have the occasion to minister to people every week and one thing I know for sure, people are hurting. People need the comfort only God can provide. Recently I was speaking with a man who has struggled in various relationships in life. Following the break up of a long relationship has left him feeling hopeless. He feels there is no where to turn. In speaking with him I realized that his greatest need was indeed a relationship, but not with another woman, he needs to strengthen his relationship with the God who created him.

There is something a bout knowing that everything is going to be okay that gives us hope to go on, even in the midst of great trials. Dear friends, can I remind you today that if you know Jesus as your personal Savior, everything is going to be alright. It may not seem like it right now, but God is at work in your life. If that is not true, then the Bible is not true. And, believe me, the Bible IS TRUE!

Do you need to take your focus off the problems that surround you and place them on the Problem-Solver? Focus again on the God who cares for you beyond your understanding. Make God the center of your hopes and dreams. Give God your failures, your heartaches, and your pains, and allow Him to share with you His peace.

VERSE:
All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is
written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything
written in the Book of the Law." Clearly no one is justified before
God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith."
-- Galatians 3:10-11

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+3:10-11

THOUGHT:
Thankfully, God provided us the Sacrifice that makes us
righteous and pays for our sins, because none of us keeps God's Law
perfectly. In his boundless grace, God sent Jesus to do what we
cannot do: live a perfect life and offer himself as the perfect
sacrifice for our sins. We don't have to live under law trying to
earn our perfection and God's acceptance. Instead, we live "by
faith," trusting that God will look at us through Christ's
perfection and not our imperfection, judge us based on Jesus'
holiness and not our transgressions, and view us through the Son's
righteousness and not our unrighteousness. In this way, we fulfill
the righteousness requirements of the Law, without having to be
bound to the "curse of the law."

PRAYER:
Almighty and Most Holy God, thank you for your plan of grace
that has brought me back from sin and death, and given me a way to
live victoriously for you. Thank you, dear Father, for Jesus and
his awesome and holy life, and his generous and loving sacrifice
for my sins. May the words I say, and the way I live, show that
your grace has captured my heart and that true faith in Jesus has
changed my life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
