=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Hard Times Good for You?, by Rubel Shelly

My parents lived through the Great Depression, and it changed them
forever. They were certainly never wasteful. They hated and avoided
debt. They made prudent purchases. And they were generous with others
in distress.

I am neither an economist nor a prophet, but I am not impressed by the
people crying "Wolf!" today and predicting another economic disaster
comparable to the one my mother and father survived. Maybe it's just my
natural bent toward optimism, but I am bullish on the future of our
country.

True enough, times right now are challenging for all of us and
downright cruel to some of us. But we'll be looking back in a few
months to a few years -- and telling our children and grandchildren
what we learned "back then."

Maybe you can tell them how you ...

* Wised up to the money you were wasting and the harm you were doing
to your health -- and quit smoking.

* Beat your addiction to credit cards and started living within your
means.

* Took your lunch to work three days a week and saved over $150 a
month.

* Learned to use the public library not just for checking out books
but for borrowing (not buying or renting!) movies and educational
programs.

* Began eliminating cable channels, text-message services, or
telephone land lines you weren't using enough to justify.

* Got serious about eliminating debt from your life and quit living
by the assumption that you had the right to everything advertisers
offered.

* Started saving for their college education or first house purchase
and opened the savings account you are giving them now.

* Began living the generosity they are marveling at now.

We need to quit waiting for someone to fix things!

I'm sure you are getting the picture by now. Taking the long view of
things, you need to see what is happening today from the perspective of
where you want to be in five or ten years. I need to quit whining about
how tough things are and figure out ways to cope with unpleasant
realities. All of us need to quit waiting for someone to fix things and
begin doing the things that will make a difference.

The choice in life is not between having problems and avoiding them. It
is between growing from them and being destroyed by them.

Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for
you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And
let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and
complete, lacking in nothing (James 1:2-4 NRS).

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 97:1 and Genesis 9:14

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

MORNING:

"The Lord reigneth, let the earth rejoice."
-- Psalms 97:1

Causes for disquietude there are none so long as this blessed sentence
is true. On earth the Lord's power as readily controls the rage of the
wicked as the rage of the sea; his love as easily refreshes the poor
with mercy as the earth with showers. Majesty gleams in flashes of fire
amid the tempest's horrors, and the glory of the Lord is seen in its
grandeur in the fall of empires, and the crash of thrones. In all our
conflicts and tribulations, we may behold the hand of the divine King.

"God is God; he sees and hears
All our troubles, all our tears.
Soul, forget not, 'mid thy pains,
God o'er all for ever reigns."

In hell, evil spirits own, with misery, his undoubted supremacy. When
permitted to roam abroad, it is with a chain at their heel; the bit is
in the mouth of behemoth, and the hook in the jaws of leviathan.
Death's darts are under the Lord's lock, and the grave's prisons have
divine power as their warder. The terrible vengeance of the Judge of
all the earth makes fiends cower down and tremble, even as dogs in the
kennel fear the hunter's whip.

"Fear not death, nor Satan's thrusts,
God defends who in him trusts;
Soul, remember, in thy pains,
God o'er all for ever reigns."

In heaven none doubt the sovereignty of the King Eternal, but all fall
on their faces to do him homage. Angels are his courtiers, the redeemed
his favourites, and all delight to serve him day and night. May we soon
reach the city of the great King!

"For this life's long night of sadness
He will give us peace and gladness.
Soul, remember, in thy pains,
God o'er all for ever reigns."

EVENING:

"The bow shall be seen in the cloud."
-- Genesis 9:14

The rainbow, the symbol of the covenant with Noah, is typical of our
Lord Jesus, who is the Lord's witness to the people. When may we expect
to see the token of the covenant? The rainbow is only to be seen
painted upon a cloud. When the sinner's conscience is dark with clouds,
when he remembers his past sin, and mourneth and lamenteth before God,
Jesus Christ is revealed to him as the covenant Rainbow, displaying all
the glorious hues of the divine character and betokening peace. To the
believer, when his trials and temptations surround him, it is sweet to
behold the person of our Lord Jesus Christ-to see him bleeding, living,
rising, and pleading for us. God's rainbow is hung over the cloud of
our sins, our sorrows, and our woes, to prophesy deliverance. Nor does
a cloud alone give a rainbow, there must be the crystal drops to
reflect the light of the sun. So, our sorrows must not only threaten,
but they must really fall upon us. There had been no Christ for us if
the vengeance of God had been merely a threatening cloud: punishment
must fall in terrible drops upon the Surety. Until there is a real
anguish in the sinner's conscience, there is no Christ for him; until
the chastisement which he feels becomes grievous, he cannot see Jesus.
But there must also be a sun; for clouds and drops of rain make not
rainbows unless the sun shineth. Beloved, our God, who is as the sun to
us, always shines, but we do not always see him-clouds hide his face;
but no matter what drops may be falling, or what clouds may be
threatening, if he does but shine there will be a rainbow at once. It
is said that when we see the rainbow the shower is over. Certain it is,
that when Christ comes, our troubles remove; when we behold Jesus, our
sins vanish, and our doubts and fears subside. When Jesus walks the
waters of the sea, how profound the calm!

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Those Tears 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Those Tears 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. 2 Kings 20:5

God does see our tears! The Bible is very clear about that. In this story, Hezekiah was told he was going to die. He cried out to the Lord and the Lord healed him. God added fifteen years to his life.

Sometimes we just need to cry out before the Lord. We need to be willing to approach him, holding nothing back, with honesty and humility. When was the last time you shed tears before the Lord, crying out to Him with your needs?

I stumbled on a young lady at church recently who was crying. I didnt know why, and she didnt want to tell me at first, which was okay, I just wanted her to know that I cared. Afterwards, I prayed with and for her and she seemed so much better. I dont know if it was the pra yer or the tears, or possibly both. She felt closer to the Lord after the event!

Dear friend, dont bottle up your tears! Let God bottle them up! Pour out yourself, including your tears, before the Lord. Show yourself openly and honestly to Him!

And, no, it does not make you less of a man to shed a tear. I didn't raise my boys to be cry babies, but there are times to cry and times to be strong and I hope they know that. When your life is caving in, or you are facing something far bigger than your own abilities, cry out to God! Shed some tears!

Hell catch them! And, youll catch more of Him!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Theology Of Rest"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 12, 2008

THE THEOLOGY OF REST

Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?

Matthew 8:26
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+8:26&sr=1

When we are in fear we can do nothing less than pray to God, but Our
Lord has a right to expect that those who name His Name should have
an understanding confidence in Him. God expects His children to be so
confident in Him that in any crisis they are the reliable ones. Our
trust is in God up to a certain point, then we go back to the
elementary panic prayers of those who do not know God. We get to our
wits' end, showing that we have not the slightest confidence in Him
and His government of the world; He seems to be asleep, and we see
nothing but breakers ahead.

"O ye of little faith!" What a pang must have shot through the
disciples - 'Missed it again!' And what a pang will go through us
when we suddenly realize that we might have produced down right joy
in the heart of Jesus by remaining absolutely confident in Him, no
matter what was ahead.

There are stages in life when there is no storm, no crisis, when we
do our human best; it is when a crisis arises that we instantly
reveal upon whom we rely. If we have been learning to worship God and
to trust Him, the crisis will reveal that we will go to the breaking
point and not break in our confidence in Him.

We have been talking a great deal about sanctification - what is it
all going to amount to? It should work out into rest in God which
means oneness with God, a oneness which will make us not only
blameless in His sight, but a deep joy to Him.

THE VALUE OF GODLINESS

1 Timothy 4:6-10

Dear Father,

Make us diligent athletes who exercise our spiritual bodies,
recognizing that while physical exercise has some profit, godliness
is of value in every way, because it holds promise for the present
life and also for the life to come.

We have set the hope of our hearts upon you, our Father, the
living God, the Savior of all men, most especially of us who have
put our trust in you. We do believe in you. Please use our hope and
faith as a springboard to our diligent efforts for your kingdom.

In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- The Fig Tree -- Mark 11:12-14

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

The Fig Tree

The next day, Jesus was leaving Bethany. He was hungry. Jesus
saw a fig tree with leaves. So Jesus went to the tree to see
if it had any figs growing on it. But Jesus found no figs on
the tree. There were only leaves. It was not the right time
for figs to grow. So Jesus said to the tree, "People will
never eat fruit from you again." Jesus' followers heard him
say this.

-- Mark 11:12-14 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
What? What in the world is this about? ... Yeah, that's most people's
response to this story. Jesus uses his miraculous powers to curse the
fig tree. Our human viewpoint looks on this as capricious and unfair.
It's not even the season for figs and yet Jesus curses it because it is
fruitless. Clearly, Jesus is trying to teach his close followers -- and
us in the process -- something very important. As in some other stories
and events in the New Testament, it is important that we focus on the
one key point of the story. As this story unfolds, it is possible to
see that the lack of fruit on the fig tree foreshadows Jerusalem and
all that it symbolizes with the Temple -- the central religious place
for God's people. Jesus will die there. He will die for the people
there ... and people all over the world. He will come looking to see if
there is fruit as a result of his life, sacrifice, and resurrection.
There will be choices to make. There will be a season of decision and
fruit-bearing. Jerusalem had its time. Now it is our own time of
decision and continuous fruit-bearing. What will our future be?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father in heaven, I choose to honor Jesus and trust him to be my
Savior. I believe he is the Christ, the Messiah your prophets promised
would come. I want him to reign as Lord in my life. I open my life for
the Holy Spirit to do his work of transformation in me ... conforming
me into the character of your Son and transforming me into a temple
where you live. My prayer is that your holy fruit be formed in me. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : John 8:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 12, 2008

VERSE:
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light
of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but
will have the light of life."
-- John 8:12
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+8:12

THOUGHT:
After stumbling around in the dark watering my yard last night,
I was overjoyed to find a flashlight so I wouldn't meet any
unexpected "critters" as I reached into the shrubbery to turn my
faucet on and off. My joy, however, is far greater at finding
Jesus, who illuminates my heart on my darkest nights, illuminates
my future with his coming glory, illuminates my path with his words
of truth, and illuminates my hope with the dawning of each Sunday,
my weekly reminder of his triumph over the grave.

PRAYER:
Father, dear precious and holy God, how can I ever thank you
enough for the light of my life? Until my face reflects the light
of your glory, Jesus will light my way. Thank you. In the name of
Jesus, the Light of the world, I praise and thank you. Amen.
