=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Damocles, Spock, and Paul, by Russ Lawson

I read a reference yesterday that mentioned Damocles. I had heard the
name before but never read the story, so I looked it up. Are you
familiar with it?

The story is told of Damocles, an excessively flattering courtier
in the court of Dionysius II of Syracuse, a fourth century BC
tyrant of Syracuse. He exclaimed that, as a great man of power and
authority, Dionysius was truly fortunate. Dionysius offered to
switch places with him for a day, so he could taste first hand that
fortune. In the evening a banquet was held, where Damocles very
much enjoyed being waited upon like a king. Only at the end of the
meal did he look up and notice a sharpened sword hanging by a
single piece of horsehair directly above his head. Immediately, he
lost all taste for the fine foods and beautiful servers and asked
leave of the tyrant, saying he no longer wanted to be so fortunate.
(Wikipedia.com)

Most of us occasionally imagine ourselves living a different life. We
may even fantasize about being born rich, living in a different place,
a different country, having a different wife or husband. It may be that
you've dreamed of having children that behave better or parents that
love more. We may dream about what it would be like to have a body that
functions perfectly or is our imagined perfect age instead of being
disabled, old or even young. We might dream of having power to command
or freedom from responsibility to do whatever our heart desires.

In the story of Damocles we see the lesson taught: that what we imagine
to be the perfect life may have drawbacks or problems we never imagined
(like a sword hanging over your head). What we desire or want badly may
not be quite as desirable as we like to think it would be.

I may be dating myself, but I remember watching the television program
"Star Trek" when it was first on television. There was one episode that
has stayed with me for all of these years. In that episode the
character Mr. Spock was forced to fight for the woman to whom he was
engaged. He won, but then gave up the right to the woman. He turned to
the man who now would be joined to this woman and said some words that
tell a truth which most of us fail to realize until too late. These may
not be exact, but the meaning is the same: "You may find that having is
not as pleasing as wanting".

How many times in our lives have we wanted something so badly, only to
be disappointed when we finally get whatever it was we wanted? Spock
was right, "having very often is not as pleasing as wanting, or as we
had imaged it to be."

How satisfied are you with your life?

How satisfied are you with your life?

The apostle Paul had this to say about it writing to a group of
Christians who were concerned for his welfare. He wrote:

It is a great and truly Christian joy to me that after all this
time you have shown such renewed interest in my welfare. I don't
mean that you had forgotten me, but up till now you had no
opportunity of expressing your concern. Nor do I mean that I have
been in actual need, for I have learned to be content, whatever the
circumstances may be. I know now how to live when things are
difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous. In
general and in particular I have learned the secret of eating well
or going hungry, of facing either plenty or poverty. I am ready for
anything through the strength of the One who lives within me (Philippians
4:1-13 Philip's Translation).

So how are you doing? God still has a lot of work to do on me to get me
to that point!

Morning & Evening -- Daniel 5:27 and 2 Timothy 1:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, June 12, 2008

MORNING:

"Thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting."
-- Daniel 5:27

It is well frequently to weigh ourselves in the scale of God's Word.
You will find it a holy exercise to read some psalm of David, and, as
you meditate upon each verse, to ask yourself, "Can I say this? Have I
felt as David felt? Has my heart ever been broken on account of sin, as
his was when he penned his penitential psalms? Has my soul been full of
true confidence in the hour of difficulty as his was when he sang of
God's mercies in the cave of Adullam, or in the holds of Engedi? Do I
take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord?" Then
turn to the life of Christ, and as you read, ask yourselves how far you
are conformed to his likeness. Endeavour to discover whether you have
the meekness, the humility, the lovely spirit which he constantly
inculcated and displayed. Take, then, the epistles, and see whether you
can go with the apostle in what he said of his experience. Have you
ever cried out as he did-"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver
me from the body of this death?" Have you ever felt his self-abasement?
Have you seemed to yourself the chief of sinners, and less than the
least of all saints? Have you known anything of his devotion? Could you
join with him and say, "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain"?
If we thus read God's Word as a test of our spiritual condition, we
shall have good reason to stop many a time and say, "Lord, I feel I
have never yet been here, O bring me here! give me true penitence, such
as this I read of. Give me real faith; give me warmer zeal; inflame me
with more fervent love; grant me the grace of meekness; make me more
like Jesus. Let me no longer be 'found wanting,' when weighed in the
balances of the sanctuary, lest I be found wanting in the scales of
judgment." "Judge yourselves that ye be not judged."

EVENING:

"Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling."
-- 2 Timothy 1:9

The apostle uses the perfect tense and says, "Who hath saved us."
Believers in Christ Jesus are saved. They are not looked upon as
persons who are in a hopeful state, and may ultimately be saved, but
they are already saved. Salvation is not a blessing to be enjoyed upon
the dying bed, and to be sung of in a future state above, but a matter
to be obtained, received, promised, and enjoyed now. The Christian is
perfectly saved in God's purpose; God has ordained him unto salvation,
and that purpose is complete. He is saved also as to the price which
has been paid for him: "It is finished" was the cry of the Saviour ere
he died. The believer is also perfectly saved in his covenant head, for
as he fell in Adam, so he lives in Christ. This complete salvation is
accompanied by a holy calling. Those whom the Saviour saved upon the
cross are in due time effectually called by the power of God the Holy
Spirit unto holiness: they leave their sins; they endeavour to be like
Christ; they choose holiness, not out of any compulsion, but from the
stress of a new nature, which leads them to rejoice in holiness just as
naturally as aforetime they delighted in sin. God neither chose them
nor called them because they were holy, but he called them that they
might be holy, and holiness is the beauty produced by his workmanship
in them. The excellencies which we see in a believer are as much the
work of God as the atonement itself. Thus is brought out very sweetly
the fulness of the grace of God. Salvation must be of grace, because
the Lord is the author of it: and what motive but grace could move him
to save the guilty? Salvation must be of grace, because the Lord works
in such a manner that our righteousness is for ever excluded. Such is
the believer's privilege-a present salvation; such is the evidence that
he is called to it-a holy life.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Getting There"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 12, 2008

GETTING THERE

Master, where dwellest Thou? . . Come and see.

John 1:39

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+1:39&sr=1

"They abode with Him that day." That is about all some of us ever do,
then we wake up to actualities, self-interest arises and the abiding
is passed. There is no condition of life in which we cannot abide in
Jesus.

"Thou art Simon, thou shalt be called Cephas." God writes the new
name on those places only in our lives where He has erased the pride
and self-sufficiency and self-interest. Some of us have the new name
in spots only, like spiritual measles. In sections we look all right.
When we have our best spiritual mood on, you would think we were very
high-toned saints; but don't look at us when we are not in that mood.
The disciple is one who has the new name written all over him;
self-interest and pride and self-sufficiency have been completely
erased.

Pride is the deification of self, and this to-day in some of us is
not of the order of the Pharisee, but of the publican. To say "Oh,
I'm no saint," is acceptable to human pride, but it is unconscious
blasphemy against God. It literally means that you defy God to make
you a saint, "I am much too weak and hopeless, I am outside the reach
of the Atonement." Humility before men may be unconscious blasphemy
before God. Why are you not a saint? It is either that you do not
want to be a saint, or that you do not believe God can make you one.
It would be all right, you say, if God saved you and took you
straight to heaven. That is just what He will do! "We will come unto
him, and make our abode with him." Make no conditions, let Jesus be
everything, and He will take you home with Him not only for a day,
but for ever.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Dead Bones

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Dead Bones
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Elisha died and was buried.....Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man's body into Elisha's tomb. When the body touched Elisha's bones, the man came to life and stood up on his feet. 2 Kings 13:20a, 21 NIV

I wonder what would happen if someone threw a dead body next to yours or my bones? In my case it would probably attract a few more rats!

Imagine the look on the Israelites faces who had thrown the body on top of Elisha's bones! Can you say "S H O C K"? This man was dead! We're talking no breathing here! Suddenly, once his body touches the bones of Elisha, he is brought back to life.

Why? What's the point here? Well, obviously scripture doesn't expand a whole lot, but I think there is truth we can learn from this event. First, Elisha had promised victory to the righteous King Joash. This was part of fulfilling that promise.

Second, this incident speaks of the power that wa s displayed through the life of Elisha. Elisha was a man, just like you and I, but He was totally and completely sold out for God! He had a faith that God used to do many miracles and each time he gave all the glory to God! Elisha was a man full of the Spirit of God. So full in fact that Elisha's bones, even after his spirit had left his body, continued to do miracles. Wow!

Third, and most important, it shows us the power of the God Elisha served. God has the power to raise the dead. The Creator of life actually controls life. The One who knitted this man together in his mother's womb, made him breath again. And, the best news is that that same power of God is active in our lives again today!

I ask you again, what would happen if someone threw a dead body on top of our bones?

Oh, God, may we live such fiery lives for You as did Elisha that our impact might last beyond our years!

WJD! -- Have Mercy! -- Mark 9:20-22

Have Mercy!

So the followers brought the boy to Jesus. When the {evil}
spirit saw Jesus, the spirit attacked the boy. The boy fell
down and rolled on the ground. He was foaming from his mouth.
Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has this been
happening to the boy?" The father answered, "Since he was
very young. The spirit often throws him into a fire or into
water to kill him. If you can do anything for him, please
have pity on us and help us."

-- Mark 9:20-22 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Have mercy on us! Isn't that our real place before God? Don't we need
to come into the holy and awesome presence of God with the cry, "Have
mercy on me, O God!" Of course God loves to share mercy and touch us
with his grace. He is waiting for us to recognize our need for these.
He longs for us to acknowledge that without his grace, we have no
right, no power, and no place in his presence. Then, when grace and
mercy come to us, we can be assured that they are ours because of God's
love for us.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, I love you. I thank you. I praise you. There are many
reasons why you are worthy of my love, thanks, and praise. One of the
foremost reasons, however, is that you have treated me with mercy and
welcomed me with love and dealt with my sins graciously. Thank you. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Ephesians 6:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 12, 2008

VERSE:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the
rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark
world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
realms.
-- Ephesians 6:12

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+6:12

THOUGHT:
This is war! We face a daily battle and it is not just with sin
and temptation. We have a real foe whose desire for us is our
destruction. But, our foe has already been defeated and his angels
stand rebuked. So, let's keep our spiritual vigor knowing that
we're not playing church but fighting for the Kingdom.

PRAYER:
Almighty and Victorious King, I praise you for conquering sin
and death and law for us, and making us righteous and sinless by
your grace. Thank you, in Jesus' name. Amen.
