Help get the Word out! \--------------------- http://www.heartlight.org/support ---/ =========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ========================== Woman Behold Your Son, by Sarah Stirman
Same song, next verse, eight months later. Last night my 10 year old son and I experienced a feeling of deja vu as we traveled to the same emergency room to have the same foot x-rayed so a (different!) doctor could tell us that he had fractured his ankle the same way he did eight months ago. Same injury, different season. Now, instead of trying to figure out how to keep toes warm in 40 degree weather, we have to figure out how to keep a cast dry in swimming pool season. This too shall pass.
Of course our emergency room visit took a while and we got home at bedtime needing to eat dinner. By the time we ate and medicated and propped the foot in bed, I just wanted to collapse in my own bed. Collapse I did, but sleep wouldn't come. I kept thinking of the injury. Even though we witnessed indescribable grief and pain at the hospital, I could only think of my own baby boy and his painful injury. I kept replaying the moment in my mind over and over. I didn't even see it happen -- only heard the awful wails after the fact -- but I pieced together in my mind what he relayed had happened and watched it like a movie stuck on the same loop. I finally crawled out of bed to find a new image to put in my brain. I grabbed my Bible, curled up in my chair, and started reading. "Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother ..." (John 19:25). That's as far as I could go. I thought of the horrific images Mary must have had burned into her brain. I imagined the black days between Friday and Sunday. Her baby boy lay motionless behind the stone and she longed to think of him as the pink, squishy newborn she had nursed or as the precocious young man in the temple speaking wisdom. But she couldn't shake the image of the broken body on the cross. Was her joy complete when she saw him whole again -- or could she only think of the tortured body on the cross? He forgave me for my sin that kept him nailed there -- I wonder if she ever did? Mary probably never struggled to grasp the enormity of what it cost for her to have eternal life. There was likely never a communion meal of remembrance that Mary composed a shopping list in her head or counted the minutes until the restaurant opened. The image of her own baby boy broken and nailed to a cross was a picture in a locket forever in her brain. Each moment of remembrance was filled with agony of the memory combined with flooding gratitude for what it means for each of us. May I be Mary-minded and walk in constant remembrance and gratitude of the precious lamb of God sacrificed so that I may be pure before the throne of God. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death so that we may serve the living God! (Hebrews 9:14 NIV) Each moment of remembrance was filled with agony. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sarah is part of The Coffee Group, a varied group of women who express their love, faith, and praise for God with ladies they love. -/\/\----------------------------------------------------------------- \ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/ --\/------------------------------------------------------------------ Thursday, August 14, 2008 MORNING: "Thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work." -- Psalms 92:4 Do you believe that your sins are forgiven, and that Christ has made a full atonement for them? Then what a joyful Christian you ought to be! How you should live above the common trials and troubles of the world! Since sin is forgiven, can it matter what happens to you now? Luther said, "Smite, Lord, smite, for my sin is forgiven; if thou hast but forgiven me, smite as hard as thou wilt"; and in a similar spirit you may say, "Send sickness, poverty, losses, crosses, persecution, what thou wilt, thou hast forgiven me, and my soul is glad." Christian, if thou art thus saved, whilst thou art glad, be grateful and loving. Cling to that cross which took thy sin away; serve thou him who served thee. "I beseech you therefore, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Let not your zeal evaporate in some little ebullition of song. Show your love in expressive tokens. Love the brethren of him who loved you. If there be a Mephibosheth anywhere who is lame or halt, help him for Jonathan's sake. If there be a poor tried believer, weep with him, and bear his cross for the sake of him who wept for thee and carried thy sins. Since thou art thus forgiven freely for Christ's sake, go and tell to others the joyful news of pardoning mercy. Be not contented with this unspeakable blessing for thyself alone, but publish abroad the story of the cross. Holy gladness and holy boldness will make you a good preacher, and all the world will be a pulpit for you to preach in. Cheerful holiness is the most forcible of sermons, but the Lord must give it you. Seek it this morning before you go into the world. When it is the Lord's work in which we rejoice, we need not be afraid of being too glad. EVENING: "I know their sorrows." -- Exodus 3:7 The child is cheered as he sings, "This my father knows"; and shall not we be comforted as we discern that our dear Friend and tender soul-husband knows all about us? 1. He is the Physician, and if he knows all, there is no need that the patient should know. Hush, thou silly, fluttering heart, prying, peeping, and suspecting! What thou knowest not now, thou shalt know hereafter, and meanwhile Jesus, the beloved Physician, knows thy soul in adversities. Why need the patient analyze all the medicine, or estimate all the symptoms? This is the Physician's work, not mine; it is my business to trust, and his to prescribe. If he shall write his prescription in uncouth characters which I cannot read, I will not be uneasy on that account, but rely upon his unfailing skill to make all plain in the result, however mysterious in the working. 2. He is the Master, and his knowledge is to serve us instead of our own; we are to obey, not to judge: "The servant knoweth not what his lord doeth." Shall the architect explain his plans to every hodman on the works? If he knows his own intent, is it not enough? The vessel on the wheel cannot guess to what pattern it shall be conformed, but if the potter understands his art, what matters the ignorance of the clay? My Lord must not be cross-questioned any more by one so ignorant as I am. 3. He is the Head. All understanding centres there. What judgment has the arm? What comprehension has the foot? All the power to know lies in the head. Why should the member have a brain of its own when the head fulfils for it every intellectual office? Here, then, must the believer rest his comfort in sickness, not that he himself can see the end, but that Jesus knows all. Sweet Lord, be thou for ever eye, and soul, and head for us, and let us be content to know only what thou choosest to reveal. /--- Sponsor a Child with Compassion -----------------------\ For less than a dollar a day, you can make a powerful difference in the life of a needy child. Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were. Psalms 39:12
The reason God will hear your prayers and see your tears; the reason He will catch them and collect them in a bottle; is because you are His. You are Gods child. (I trust you are, because this is only appropriate counsel if you are. If you are not sure, reply back to me.)
God is attentive to the prayers and tears of His people. There have been times when I am sound asleep at night and something will wake me. It is a small sound that I can barely hear, but as I get up, it gets louder and louder. It is the cry of one of my boys. As a Daddy, (Mothers are always best at this) something just alerts you to the cry of your children. Whether it's for a bad dream or a fever going up, children often need the comfort of a parent.
Dear friend, you and I are no different. Thankfully the Father wh o hears our prayers, and catches and collects our tears, never slumbers nor sleeps. He is always on the job. No tear ever falls that He does not see; even those we are too proud to shed!
If you are going through a real trial right now, have confidence that your God hears your prayers and sees your tears. He knows you so well and His greatest desire is to see you at peace. He wants good for you and He is working to that end.
If you are a believer, you are on a journey with God and He will never let you down! You can trust Him to not only see your tears, but to store them up in His bottle. I believe it may well be a bottle just for you! Well see why tomorrow!

-/\/\----------------------------------------------------------------- \ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/ --\/------------------------------------------------------------------ August 14, 2008 CHASTENING
Despise not the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him. Hebrews 12:5 http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=heb+12:5&sr=1 It is very easy to quench the Spirit; we do it by despising the chastening of the Lord, by fainting when we are rebuked by Him. If we have only a shallow experience of sanctification, we mistake the shadow for the reality, and when the Spirit of God begins to check, we say - oh, that must be the devil. Never quench the Spirit, and do not despise Him when He says to you - "Don't be blind on this point any more; you are not where you thought you were. Up to the present I have not been able to reveal it to you, but I reveal it now." When the Lord chastens you like that, let Him have His way. Let Him relate you rightly to God. "Nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him." We get into sulks with God and say - "Oh, well, I can't help it; I did pray and things did not turn out right, and I am going to give it all up." Think what would happen if we talked like this in any other domain of life! Am I prepared to let God grip me by His power and do a work in me that is worthy of Himself? Sanctification is not my idea of what I want God to do for me; sanctification is God's idea of what He wants to do for me, and He has to get me into the attitude of mind and spirit where at any cost I will let Him sanctify me wholly. /--- Sponsor a Child with Compassion -----------------------\ For less than a dollar a day, you can make a powerful difference in the life of a needy child. -/\/\----------------------------------------------------------------- \ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/ --\/------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday, August 14, 2008 Fear of the Challenger The leading priests and the teachers of the law heard these things. They began trying to find a way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of Jesus because all the people were amazed at his teaching. That night, Jesus and his followers left the city.
-- Mark 11:18-19 (ERV) KEY THOUGHT: We are brought to the great irony of the story that will continue to unfold: those who hate and want to murder Jesus are afraid of him. They won't believe, but they will fear. Are their fears well founded? If they are trying to preserve the status quo, then their fears are well founded. If they are choosing the preservation of their own religious understanding, then their fears are well founded. If they are trying to maintain the facade of self-determination and control, then their fears are well founded. They will not kill Jesus for being a nice guy, a friend to outcasts, a helper to the weak, and a lover of children. They will kill Jesus because he comes to challenge everything they hold dear. What will we do with such a Jesus? TODAY'S PRAYER: Almighty God and gracious Father, while I sometimes fear change in my life, your grace and mercy have taught me not to fear Jesus. However, dear Father, I do find that in my heart there are areas of reluctance that I do not want to relinquish to his control. This shames me when I am courageous enough to be honest about it. Please help me relinquish control of these areas of my life to your Son. Please use your Spirit to comfort and calm me as I must learn to walk by faith in areas of my life where I have tried to maintain control. In Jesus' name I ask this. Amen.

-/\/\----------------------------------------------------------------- \ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/ --\/------------------------------------------------------------------ August 14, 2008 VERSE: Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has fortified many towns. But I will send fire upon their cities that will consume their fortresses. -- Hosea 8:14 http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Hosea+8:14
THOUGHT: In prosperity, God's people left the LORD and followed their own gods and practiced their own morality. Except neither was "their own." The northern tribes of Israel simply became like the pagan people around them -- practicing the same detestable immoral lifestyles, forgetting the poor and the alien, cheating the widows and the powerless. God wanted them to know that he knew what they were doing. The Almighty wanted them to realize that he would act and bring justice. The Sovereign LORD wanted the northern tribes of Israel to realize that they have sown their own destruction, and even though they cannot even fathom its possibility, God made sure it was coming because of their hardness of heart and their refusal to live with character. Their destruction is a great reminder to us that our name of Christian, our claim to be God's chosen people and his holy priesthood (1 Pet. 2), doesn't matter unless our lives portray his character, our heart displays his compassion, and hands do his will. PRAYER: Father, forgive us, for we sin. Father, forgive me, for sinning and looking the other way at social, judicial, and racial injustice. Empower me, dear LORD, empower us, to truly be your Holy Nation, bound together by our faith in Jesus and not by our race, age, nationality, political preferences, or social economic status, connected by our praise of your glory and exemplifying to the hate-filled world the grace that comes from knowing you as our Father. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. http://www.heartlight.org/cgi-shl/todaysverse.cgi?day=20080814 Today's Verse is also available in: PORTUGUESE - http://www.iluminalma.com.br/dph/3/0814.html SPANISH - http://www.laluzdelalma.com/vdh/3/0814.html /--- READY TO CHANGE THE WORLD? -----------------------------\ ACU students do every day! -/\/\----------------------------------------------------------------- \ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/ --\/------------------------------------------------------------------ August 14, 2008
VERSE: For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. -- Hosea 8:14 http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Hosea+8:14&translation=kjv THOUGHT: In prosperity, God's people left the LORD and followed their own gods and practiced their own morality. Amen. http://www.heartlight.org/cgi-shl/todaysverse.cgi?day=20080814&ver=kjv |-- HEARTLIGHT NEEDS YOUR HELP... -------------------------| As we face the summer of 2008, we truly need your help to keep the light shining!
