The Divine Life Is Our Living Hope

1Pet 1: 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto
a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead,
Col 1:27 To whom God willed to make known what are the riches
of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ
in you, the hope of glory,

A living hope depends on life. If there were no life in our
body, we would not have the hope to be healed of any illness or
injury. But because we have life in our body, we have the hope
for it to be healed of injury or illness. We would not have such
a hope for something that is not living. For example, suppose a
wooden chair is broken. The chair does not have any hope of
repairing itself. If no one comes to work on the chair to repair
it, it will remain indefinitely broken without any hope of being
fixed. But when I was in the hospital, I could have a living
hope because of the life in my body. I had the confidence that
my physical life would heal the problem in my body. Therefore, I
had a living hope.

What is a living hope? A living hope is a hope that comes from
life. This hope results from the living, organic element within
us.

In addition to physical life, we also have the divine life in us
through the Father's regeneration. This life is the strongest,
richest, and highest life. To be sure, this life will take care
of us. We may have problems and troubles, but we have a living
hope because of the divine life within us. We are not dead--we
are living. Thus, we have a living hope, the hope that our
situation will be better in the future. We have eternal life,
and this life gives us a living hope. This hope is the
inheritance of all the blessings of eternal life.

The Lord's Take on the Subject, by Phil Ware


For many in the US, April 14 and 15 are two of the most stressful days
of the whole year. Rather than trying to weigh in with my opinion or
inject some humor on the subject, I felt it might be good just to give
us a few words from Scripture to consider.

Grace to you as you seek to honor the Lord in every area of your life!

First, from Jesus on the subject of taxes:

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his
words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians.
"Teacher," they said, "we know that you are a man of integrity and
that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You
aren't swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they
are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the
imperial tax to Caesar or not?"

But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why
are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the
tax." They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, "Whose image
is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied. Then he
said to them, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God
what is God's."

When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went
away

(Matthew 22:15-22 TNIV).

Again, from Jesus, this time on our need to be rich toward God:

Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to
divide the inheritance with me."

Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between
you?" Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against
all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of
possessions."

And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man
yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, 'What shall I
do? I have no place to store my crops.'

"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and
build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And
I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many
years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."'

"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be
demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for
yourself?'

"This is how it will be with those who store up things for
themselves but are not rich toward God"

(Luke 12:13-21).

From the apostle Paul on paying taxes:

Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only
because of possible punishment but also as a matter of
conscience.This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are
God's servants, who give their full time to governing.

Give to everyone what you owe: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if
revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then
honor (Romans 13:5-7).

Now, from the apostle Paul, on the ability to handle all financial
situations because of God's presence and blessing in our lives:

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have
plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every
situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or
in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength (Philippians
4:12-13).

And in conclusion, reassurance for us all:

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his
glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

MORNING:

"All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the
lip, they shake the head."
-- Psalms 22:7

Mockery was a great ingredient in our Lord's woe. Judas mocked him in
the garden; the chief priests and scribes laughed him to scorn; Herod
set him at nought; the servants and the soldiers jeered at him, and
brutally insulted him; Pilate and his guards ridiculed his royalty; and
on the tree all sorts of horrid jests and hideous taunts were hurled at
him. Ridicule is always hard to bear, but when we are in intense pain
it is so heartless, so cruel, that it cuts us to the quick. Imagine the
Saviour crucified, racked with anguish far beyond all mortal guess, and
then picture that motley multitude, all wagging their heads or
thrusting out the lip in bitterest contempt of one poor suffering
victim! Surely there must have been something more in the crucified One
than they could see, or else such a great and mingled crowd would not
unanimously have honoured him with such contempt. Was it not evil
confessing, in the very moment of its greatest apparent triumph, that
after all it could do no more than mock at that victorious goodness
which was then reigning on the cross? O Jesus, "despised and rejected
of men," how couldst thou die for men who treated thee so ill? Herein
is love amazing, love divine, yea, love beyond degree. We, too, have
despised thee in the days of our unregeneracy, and even since our new
birth we have set the world on high in our hearts, and yet thou
bleedest to heal our wounds, and diest to give us life. O that we could
set thee on a glorious high throne in all men's hearts! We would ring
out thy praises over land and sea till men should as universally adore
as once they did unanimously reject.

"Thy creatures wrong thee, O thou sovereign Good!
Thou art not loved, because not understood:
This grieves me most, that vain pursuits beguile
Ungrateful men, regardless of thy smile."

EVENING:

"Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him."
-- Isaiah 3:10

It is well with the righteous ALWAYS. If it had said, "Say ye to the
righteous, that it is well with him in his prosperity," we must have
been thankful for so great a boon, for prosperity is an hour of peril,
and it is a gift from heaven to be secured from its snares: or if it
had been written, "It is well with him when under persecution," we must
have been thankful for so sustaining an assurance, for persecution is
hard to bear; but when no time is mentioned, all time is included.
God's "shalls" must be understood always in their largest sense. From
the beginning of the year to the end of the year, from the first
gathering of evening shadows until the day-star shines, in all
conditions and under all circumstances, it shall be well with the
righteous. It is so well with him that we could not imagine it to be
better, for he is well fed, he feeds upon the flesh and blood of Jesus;
he is well clothed, he wears the imputed righteousness of Christ; he is
well housed, he dwells in God; he is well married, his soul is knit in
bonds of marriage union to Christ; he is well provided for, for the
Lord is his Shepherd; he is well endowed, for heaven is his
inheritance. It is well with the righteous-well upon divine authority;
the mouth of God speaks the comforting assurance. O beloved, if God
declares that all is well, ten thousand devils may declare it to be
ill, but we laugh them all to scorn. Blessed be God for a faith which
enables us to believe God when the creatures contradict him. It is,
says the Word, at all times well with thee, thou righteous one; then,
beloved, if thou canst not see it, let God's word stand thee in stead
of sight; yea, believe it on divine authority more confidently than if
thine eyes and thy feelings told it to thee. Whom God blesses is blest
indeed, and what his lip declares is truth most sure and steadfast.

INSPIRED INVINCIBILITY

"Whom the Lord loveth, He chasteneth." How petty our complaining is!
Our Lord begins to bring us into the place where we can have
communion with Him, and we groan and say - "O Lord, let me be like
other people!" Jesus is asking us to take one end of the yoke - "My
yoke is easy, get alongside Me and we will pull together." Are you
identified with the Lord Jesus like that? If so, you will thank God
for the pressure of His hand.

"To them that have no might He increaseth strength." God comes and
takes us out of our sentimentality, and our complaining turns into a
pæan of praise. The only way to know the strength of God is to take
the yoke of Jesus upon us and learn of Him.

"The joy of the Lord is your strength." Where do the saints get their
joy from? If we did not know some saints, we would say - "Oh, he, or
she, has nothing to bear." Lift the veil. The fact that the peace and
the light and the joy of God are there is proof that the burden is
there too. The burden God places squeezes the grapes and out comes
the wine; most of us see the wine only. No power on earth or in hell
can conquer the Spirit of God in a human spirit, it is an inner
unconquerableness.

If you have the whine in you, kick it out ruthlessly. It is a
positive crime to be weak in God's strength.

Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty. Exodus 23:6-7 NIV

So many times in my life I have watched as an innocent person was �put to death�. I�m not talking about capital punishment. I�m talking about crucifixion by gossip and words of destruction. The rumor mill has destroyed many reputations; caused people to lose interest in God and the church; and destroyed people�s sense of self worth.

Can I ask you to strongly consider the way you talk about someone else�s life or situation? Will you sincerely consider if you are speaking truth; and even if what you are saying is true, what the motive is behind your words? If your desire is to share the latest �news� from the streets, will it help or hurt another�s reputation? Will it bring someone closer to Christ or further away? Will what you say help to share the love o f Christ or is it an evil of the tongue?

Let�s let our talk be filled with truth, kindness, compassion and goodwill and never deny a person the same respect we would want others to give to us.

Although they were baptized into Moses in the cloud and the sea,
and drank of the spiritual food and spiritual water, flowing
backward through time from that spiritual Rock, which was Christ
himself. In spite of all this, they got lost in the wilderness
because they displeased you.

O Father, let me take to heart these warnings, and not desire
anything evil, as they did, nor to worship idols, as they did, or
to engage in immorality, as they did. May I never put you to the
test or grumble about your providence, as they did.

In the name of Jesus grant me patience to persevere until the end.
Amen.

Brutality and Grief


So the king sent a soldier to cut off John's head and bring
it. So the soldier went and cut off John's head in the
prison. Then the soldier brought John's head back on a plate.
He gave the head to the girl. Then the girl gave the head to
her mother. John's followers heard about what happened. So
they came and got John's body. They put it in a tomb (grave).

KEY THOUGHT:
We often forget that we have brothers and sisters in Christ who have to
face incredible inhumanity and brutality because of their faith,
righteousness, and unwavering loyalty to Jesus. Let's use this gruesome
reminder of John the Baptist's death to jar us into an acute awareness
of our fellow believers world-wide who are suffering and dying for the
cause of Christ.


TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, my Abba Father, it pains me deeply to think about your precious
children who are having to face horribly brutal times because of their
faith. Please work in the affairs of our world to bring an end to the
regimes that support such inhumanity and brutality. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

VERSE:
We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that
God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

THOUGHT:
As horrible as the Cross was, it wasn't the final chapter of the
Jesus story. Jesus died and then rose again. We can believe two
things because of Jesus' resurrection: 1) that Jesus will return in
glorious victory for those who have believed in him, and 2) that we
will be with those we love who have fallen asleep in Christ when
Jesus comes again.

PRAYER:
Holy and Almighty Father, thank you for raising Jesus from the
dead and giving me the assurance of eternal life with you, and with
those I love who have already passed from this life into death. I
look forward to the day Jesus returns in glory, with the angels of
heaven, and brings complete victory over death. Thank you in Jesus'
name. Amen.
