=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Tact Attack, by Rubel Shelly

My wife tells me I'm seriously deficient in the tact department. I tend
to be direct, clear, and forthright. (Those are my terms.) She thinks I
am inclined to err on the side of being a bit abrupt and blunt. (At
least, she fears that my candid manner can be perceived in those
negative ways.)

Even so, I don't think I'm quite as bad as one fellow I heard about.
When Fred went to Europe, he left his beloved dog with his brother Ed.
Three days into his trip, Fred called back to check on things.

"So how is my dog?" he asked.

"He's dead!" replied Ed. No nonsense. Straight to the point.

"What?" screamed Fred. "You can't just hit somebody with news like
that! You have to ease your way into it. Lay some groundwork for it.
Use some tact."

"Explain what you mean," said his brother.

"Maybe you could have said something about Old Fido being up on the
roof. You reassure me you have it under control and that everything is
going to be fine. When I call the next day, maybe you could say he
jumped off and broke his leg, but the vet said he would make a complete
recovery. He's just going to have to spend a few days at the clinic,"
he explained. Are you following me?"

"Sure," said Ed. "I'm not stupid, you know!"

"Okay," Fred continued. "When I call back the next day, you could say
there were complications and that my dog had died. That way it wouldn't
be such a blow. That way you could have gotten me ready for bad news.
Understand?"

"Yes, I've got it," he told him. "I'll try to do better from now on."

Care enough to speak the truth.

"Good," said Fred. "I'm glad that's settled. So how's Aunt Helen?"

"Well," Ed began hesitantly, "she's out on the roof right now."

Some news is hard to receive or to communicate. Some facts are simply
unpleasant. And all of us need a couple of friends who care enough
about us to be really and truly honest with us – and to hold us
accountable. Like Fred, though, all of us would appreciate a modicum of
tact and gentleness thrown in.

If you're struggling today with unpleasant or painful truth that needs
to be shared, you are not doing anyone a favor by avoiding the task.
But think before you speak. Don't use a cover such as "brutal honesty"
to mask what everyone else will see as "honest brutality." No swatting
the fly on a friend's forehead with a meat cleaver! Think and pray
before you speak. Then speak with gentleness.

Solomon had it right: "Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an
enemy multiplies kisses" (Proverbs 27:6 NIV). Nobody benefits from
false flattery. Being a "yes man" (or woman) to a person who needs
accountability and loving criticism is a sophistry that will come back
to haunt you.

Be kind and have the right motive. But care enough to speak the truth.

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you
may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And
over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together
in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12-14 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- Jeremiah 17:17 and Psalms 149:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

MORNING:

"Thou art my hope in the day of evil."
-- Jeremiah 17:17

The path of the Christian is not always bright with sunshine; he has
his seasons of darkness and of storm. True, it is written in God's
Word, "Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace;"
and it is a great truth, that religion is calculated to give a man
happiness below as well as bliss above; but experience tells us that if
the course of the just be "As the shining light that shineth more and
more unto the perfect day," yet sometimes that light is eclipsed. At
certain periods clouds cover the believer's sun, and he walks in
darkness and sees no light. There are many who have rejoiced in the
presence of God for a season; they have basked in the sunshine in the
earlier stages of their Christian career; they have walked along the
"green pastures" by the side of the "still waters," but suddenly they
find the glorious sky is clouded; instead of the Land of Goshen they
have to tread the sandy desert; in the place of sweet waters, they find
troubled streams, bitter to their taste, and they say, "Surely, if I
were a child of God, this would not happen." Oh! say not so, thou who
art walking in darkness. The best of God's saints must drink the
wormwood; the dearest of his children must bear the cross. No Christian
has enjoyed perpetual prosperity; no believer can always keep his harp
from the willows. Perhaps the Lord allotted you at first a smooth and
unclouded path, because you were weak and timid. He tempered the wind
to the shorn lamb, but now that you are stronger in the spiritual life,
you must enter upon the riper and rougher experience of God's
full-grown children. We need winds and tempests to exercise our faith,
to tear off the rotten bough of self-dependence, and to root us more
firmly in Christ. The day of evil reveals to us the value of our
glorious hope.

EVENING:

"The Lord taketh pleasure in his people."
-- Psalms 149:4

How comprehensive is the love of Jesus! There is no part of his
people's interests which he does not consider, and there is nothing
which concerns their welfare which is not important to him. Not merely
does he think of you, believer, as an immortal being, but as a mortal
being too. Do not deny it or doubt it: "The very hairs of your head are
all numbered." "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he
delighteth in his way." It were a sad thing for us if this mantle of
love did not cover all our concerns, for what mischief might be wrought
to us in that part of our business which did not come under our
gracious Lord's inspection! Believer, rest assured that the heart of
Jesus cares about your meaner affairs. The breadth of his tender love
is such that you may resort to him in all matters; for in all your
afflictions he is afflicted, and like as a father pitieth his children,
so doth he pity you. The meanest interests of all his saints are all
borne upon the broad bosom of the Son of God. Oh, what a heart is his,
that doth not merely comprehend the persons of his people, but
comprehends also the diverse and innumerable concerns of all those
persons! Dost thou think, O Christian, that thou canst measure the love
of Christ? Think of what his love has brought thee-justification,
adoption, sanctification, eternal life! The riches of his goodness are
unsearchable; thou shalt never be able to tell them out or even
conceive them. Oh, the breadth of the love of Christ! Shall such a love
as this have half our hearts? Shall it have a cold love in return?
Shall Jesus' marvellous lovingkindness and tender care meet with but
faint response and tardy acknowledgment? O my soul, tune thy harp to a
glad song of thanksgiving! Go to thy rest rejoicing, for thou art no
desolate wanderer, but a beloved child, watched over, cared for,
supplied, and defended by thy Lord.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Graciousness Of Uncertainty"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 29, 2008

THE GRACIOUSNESS OF UNCERTAINTY

It doth not yet appear what we shall be.

1 John 3:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1jo+3:2&sr=1

Naturally, we are inclined to be so mathematical and calculating that
we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We imagine that we have to
reach some end, but that is not the nature of spiritual life. The
nature of spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty,
consequently we do not make our nests anywhere. Common sense says -
"Well, supposing I were in that condition . . ." We cannot suppose
ourselves in any condition we have never been in. Certainty is the
mark of the common-sense life: gracious uncertainty is the mark of
the spiritual life. To be certain of God means that we are uncertain
in all our ways, we do not know what a day may bring forth. This is
generally said with a sigh of sadness, it should be rather an
expression of breathless expectation. We are uncertain of the next
step, but we are certain of God. Immediately we abandon to God, and
do the duty that lies nearest, He packs our life with surprises all
the time. When we become advocates of a creed, something dies; we do
not believe God, we only believe our belief about Him. Jesus said,
"Except ye become as little children." Spiritual life is the life of
a child. We are not uncertain of God, but uncertain of what He is
going to do next. If we are only certain in our beliefs, we get
dignified and severe and have the ban of finality about our views;
but when we are rightly related to God, life is full of spontaneous,
joyful uncertainty and expectancy.

"Believe also in Me," said Jesus, not - "Believe certain things about
Me." Leave the whole thing to Him, it is gloriously uncertain how He
will come in, but He will come. Remain loyal to Him.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Ascribing Worth

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Ascribing Worth
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." Genesis 22:5 NIV

God tested Abraham. He was called to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. He had finished his three plus day journey to the mountain, and now he tells his servants to stay behind, because he and Isaac were going to worship.

(Please let me say in advance that I am not trying to be funny or irreverent here.)

I suppose that Abraham and Isaac went up to the mountain, said a couple of prayers, sang three songs and the doxology, took up an offering, listened to a sermon, gave an invitation, and then went home. After all, he said he was going to worship! Isn't that what we call worship?

As I read today's verse, I understand more than ever that worship is not a single event that we can do in an hour. Oh, that is a part of worship, an important part. But, worship is so much more. Abraham was going to the mountain to worship, because he was going to be obedient to his God. He was giving his God first place in his life. That is real worship.

Worship, in its truest sense, is ascribing worth. We do that not only by what we do, but also by who we are. We worship by offering ourselves completely to our God. We worship when we put him ahead of everything else in our life.

God is looking for that kind of worship from you and me today!

Praying with Paul : "Speaking Truth"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

SPEAKING TRUTH

1 Corinthians 14:13-25

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+14:13-25

Dear Father, God of intelligibility and peace,

Let our praying, singing, and preaching be aimed at informing the
minds and spirits of others, that they may be built up and respond,
"Amen."

Give us the attitude of Paul, who said, "I would rather speak five
words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand
words in a tongue."

Let us be babies when it comes to evil, but not in our thinking.
In our thinking, may we be mature, and may we speak your message in
such a way that those who hear will be called to account, will have
the secrets of the heart disclosed, will fall on their faces to
worship you, and will declare that you are really among us.

Submitting to your commands of peace and order, I ask this in
Jesus' name. Amen.

WJD! -- Food Won't Defile -- Mark 7:17-19

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

Food Won't Defile

Then Jesus left the people and went into the house. The
followers asked Jesus about this story. Jesus said, "You
still have trouble understanding? Surely you know that
nothing that enters a person from the outside can make him
wrong. Food does not go into a person's mind. Food goes into
the stomach. Then that food goes out of the body." (When
Jesus said this, he meant that there is no food that is wrong
for people to eat.)

-- Mark 7:17-19 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Once again, Jesus wants his closest followers to know that the issues
of genuine faith focus on our heart-driven actions and not on the
cosmetic ones. Luke and Mark add the powerful commentary about making
all food clean -- a truth that took some time to sink in among Jesus'
early followers. The declaration is radical, not just because he
declared all food clean, but because he wanted us to look at our hearts
instead of having a perfunctory religious check off list of good deeds
that never demanded anything of our hearts.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, please make my deeds helpful and genuine and my heart pure. I
want to love you, and I want to love others, in deeds and truth as well
as in words and speech. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Deuteronomy 4:29

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 29, 2008

VERSE:
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him
if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.
-- Deuteronomy 4:29

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Deuteronomy+4:29

THOUGHT:
When was the last time you truly searched after God? I'm not
talking about an obscure theological insight about God or another
best selling book about God. When was the last time you sought
after the Father so that you could know him better and appreciate
him more? Let's open our hearts and go on the Great Quest to find
God. Like the prodigal son in Luke 15, we will find he's waiting
and watching for us to come home!

PRAYER:
Precious Heavenly Father, majestic in glory, awesome in might,
and ever near with your loving presence, please bless me with a
deeper and more personal knowledge and experience of you in my
life. Until the day I can see you face to face in heaven, please
draw me closer and closer to you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
