Today's Verse : Acts 2:38

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 4, 2009

VERSE:
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the
name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and
your children and for all who are far off -- for all whom the Lord
our God will call."
-- Acts 2:38
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Acts+2:38

THOUGHT:
A promise for all those everywhere: those who turn their hearts
to God and are baptized fully trusting in Jesus as their Lord and
Savior will be filled with God's Spirit and will be forgiven of
their sins because of the mighty name and gracious work of Jesus
Christ. So like the early disciples, let's share this grace so that
the world can know that Jesus is not only Lord; he is also Savior
and King for all who hear God's call and trust in him.

PRAYER:
Praise to you Almighty and gracious Father. You have given me
hope when there was none. You have given me strength when my
resolve was gone. You have blessed me with grace and poured your
love into my heart through your Holy Spirit, your gift from above.
For your love, grace, forgiveness, salvation, and Spirit I praise
you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Jesus Watching

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Jesus Watching
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Revelation 2:2-3 NIV

Jesus knows! He has been watching your every move and He knows. He has seen your good works.

As Jesus speaks to the church at Ephesus, He is also speaking to you and me. Jesus actually compliments the church for their good works. Yes, He does call them back to their first love. It seems they had gotten so busy working for the church, that they failed to spend time just being with God, which is most important. God desires your time and attention.

Still, it is good to know that God is watching and that our actions matter to Him. I know many of you who read these thoughts are experiencing difficult days. Marriages have been broken, children in trouble , cancer diagnosed, finances have fallen apart, work stress has increased; problems are all around us it seems.

But God is taking notice of your faithfulness. You continue to trust Him, even when things get dark in your life. You keep serving in spite of the temptations to quit. You are still pointing your life towards Christ.

Oh, dear Christian friend, Jesus is pleased when our faith prevails through the trials of life. Are you still making Him proud?

Get Our Hopes Up, by Tom Norvell

I tell myself, "It's not going to happen." But, I still get my hopes
up.

Every time the weather forecasters start calling for snow, I get my
hopes up. I know I'm writing this on March 1st and spring flowers are
waiting to bloom, but I love snow. I'm sorry for those who have to work
out in the cold and snow. But, I love snow! I love watching it fall. I
love the beauty of it lining the trees. I love the quietness of it. I
love the peacefulness of it.

So, last week when the local meteorologist began saying, "Look out for
Saturday night!" I did. I told myself, "Don't get your hopes up. It's
not going to snow." But, they kept saying, "Don't be surprised when you
wake up tomorrow morning there's going to be more snow than you
expected." So, I waited as the cold rain turned to sleet and sure
enough, before I went to bed, it was really snowing. That's when I
abandoned all skepticism, falling to sleep fully assured that there
would be several inches of snow on the ground when I woke.

NOT! We got a "dusting." That's what the folks further east of us were
supposed to get. The folks west of us got from 3-10 inches. We got a
"dusting." Apparently the weather predictors do not know how active my
imagination is. When I think of getting more snow than I am expecting,
I expect more than a "dusting."

God's wisdom says, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing
fulfilled is a tree of life" (Proverbs 12:12 NIV). That's me. I always
get my hopes up. When it doesn't happen my heart gets sick. But, when
the longing is fulfilled it is like a tree of life.

And I know that I will not be disappointed!

I know some of you are saying, "Are you some kind of nut? It's March 1!
It's not supposed to snow on March 1!" Well, it has before. Why not
today? After all, that's what they said. That's what I expected.

I'm sure as the day goes on I will understand why being disappointed
over not getting a huge snow is not the worst thing that could happen.
There are probably some who would say, "You want snow? You can have
it!" Others might say, "Grow up, man!" One or two may even say, "It's
not a big deal." But, to this childlike heart it is a big deal ... for
a few minutes ... for this morning. I thought it was going to snow and
I got my hopes up. I'll get over it. In fact, writing this has been
very therapeutic. Thanks for letting me share my heart with you. Thank
you for listening.

There will be other things that disappoint me in this life. There will
be other predictions. I always get my hopes up. But, there will one day
when my hopes will not be deferred. One day my dream will come true.
One day I will no longer be heartsick. That's when my longings will be
ultimately fulfilled. That's when I will see the Lord in all His glory.
That's when all broken hearts will be mended. That's when there will be
no more farewells. That's when we will all be together forever. That's
when we will finally be home. I feel confident that I can get my hopes
as high as I possibly can, and I know that I will not be disappointed
because the One who is our hope has promised that He is preparing the
room.

[Jesus said,] "Don't let this throw you. You trust God, don't you?
Trust me. There is plenty of room for you in my Father's home. If
that weren't so, would I have told you that I'm on my way to get a
room ready for you? And if I'm on my way to get your room ready,
I'll come back and get you so you can live where I live. And you
already know the road I'm taking" (John 14:1-4 MSG).

We can get our hopes up.

Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 48:10 and Matthew 3:16

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

MORNING:

"I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction."
-- Isaiah 48:10

Comfort thyself, tried believer, with this thought: God saith, "I have
chosen thee in the furnace of affliction." Does not the word come like
a soft shower, assuaging the fury of the flame? Yea, is it not an
asbestos armour, against which the heat hath no power? Let affliction
come-God has chosen me. Poverty, thou mayst stride in at my door, but
God is in the house already, and he has chosen me. Sickness, thou mayst
intrude, but I have a balsam ready-God has chosen me. Whatever befalls
me in this vale of tears, I know that he has "chosen" me. If, believer,
thou requirest still greater comfort, remember that you have the Son of
Man with you in the furnace. In that silent chamber of yours, there
sitteth by your side One whom thou hast not seen, but whom thou lovest;
and ofttimes when thou knowest it not, he makes all thy bed in thy
affliction, and smooths thy pillow for thee. Thou art in poverty; but
in that lovely house of thine the Lord of life and glory is a frequent
visitor. He loves to come into these desolate places, that he may visit
thee. Thy friend sticks closely to thee. Thou canst not see him, but
thou mayst feel the pressure of his hands. Dost thou not hear his
voice? Even in the valley of the shadow of death he says, "Fear not, I
am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God." Remember that noble
speech of Caesar: "Fear not, thou carriest Caesar and all his fortune."
Fear not, Christian; Jesus is with thee. In all thy fiery trials, his
presence is both thy comfort and safety. He will never leave one whom
he has chosen for his own. "Fear not, for I am with thee," is his sure
word of promise to his chosen ones in the "furnace of affliction." Wilt
thou not, then, take fast hold of Christ, and say-

"Through floods and flames, if Jesus lead,
I'll follow where he goes."

EVENING:

"He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove."
-- Matthew 3:16

As the Spirit of God descended upon the Lord Jesus, the head, so he
also, in measure, descends upon the members of the mystical body. His
descent is to us after the same fashion as that in which it fell upon
our Lord. There is often a singular rapidity about it; or ever we are
aware, we are impelled onward and heavenward beyond all expectation.
Yet is there none of the hurry of earthly haste, for the wings of the
dove are as soft as they are swift. Quietness seems essential to many
spiritual operations; the Lord is in the still small voice, and like
the dew, his grace is distilled in silence. The dove has ever been the
chosen type of purity, and the Holy Spirit is holiness itself. Where he
cometh, everything that is pure and lovely, and of good report, is made
to abound, and sin and uncleanness depart. Peace reigns also where the
Holy Dove comes with power; he bears the olive branch which shows that
the waters of divine wrath are assuaged. Gentleness is a sure result of
the Sacred Dove's transforming power: hearts touched by his benign
influence are meek and lowly henceforth and for ever. Harmlessness
follows, as a matter of course; eagles and ravens may hunt their
prey-the turtledove can endure wrong, but cannot inflict it. We must be
harmless as doves. The dove is an apt picture of love, the voice of the
turtle is full of affection; and so, the soul visited by the blessed
Spirit, abounds in love to God, in love to the brethren, and in love to
sinners; and above all, in love to Jesus. The brooding of the Spirit of
God upon the face of the deep, first produced order and life, and in
our hearts, he causes and fosters new life and light. Blessed Spirit,
as thou didst rest upon our dear Redeemer, even so rest upon us from
this time forward and for ever.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Unrelieved Quest"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 3, 2009

THE UNRELIEVED QUEST

Feed My sheep.

John 21:17
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+21:17&sr=1

This is love in the making. The love of God is tin-made, it is God's
nature. When we receive the Holy Spirit He unites us with God so that
His love is manifested in us. When the soul is united to God by the
indwelling Holy Spirit, that is not the end; the end is that we may
be one with the Father as Jesus was. What kind of oneness had Jesus
Christ with the Father? Such a oneness that the Father sent Him down
here to be spent for us, and He says - "As the Father hath sent Me,
even so send I you."

Peter realizes now with the revelation of the Lord's hurting question
that he does love Him; then comes the point - "Spend it out." Don't
testify how much you love Me, don't profess about the marvellous
revelation you have had, but - "Feed My sheep." And Jesus has some
extraordinarily funny sheep, some bedraggled, dirty sheep, some
awkward, butting sheep, some sheep that have gone astray! It is
impossible to weary God's love, and it is impossible to weary that
love in me if it springs from the one centre. The love of God pays no
attention to the distinctions made by natural individuality. If I
love my Lord I have no business to be guided by natural temperament;
I have to feed His sheep. There is no relief and no release from this
commission. Beware of counterfeiting the love of God by working along
the line of natural human sympathy, because that will end in
blaspheming the love of God.

Praying with Paul : "Imitating Christ"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

IMITATING CHRIST

Romans 15:1-8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+15:1-8

Dear Father, God of steadfast love,

May the strength you give us be used to bear with the failings of
those who are weak, not to please ourselves, but to please our
neighbor for his good, to build him up.

In this let us imitate Jesus, your Son, who did not please
himself, but lived as it was written of him, "The reproaches of
those who reproached you fell on me."

May you, our Father, the God of steadfastness and encouragement,
grant us Christians to live in such harmony with one another, in
full accord with Jesus Christ, that together we may with one voice
glorify you, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the name of Jesus and according to his command. Amen.

WJD! -- Taming the Rebel Heart -- Matthew 5:41

Taming the Rebel Heart

"If a soldier forces you to walk with him one mile, then go
with him two miles."

-- Matthew 5:41 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
A bitter-hearted rebel lives in many of us. We hate it when someone
takes advantage of us. We view the lane-changing, frenzied, aggressive
driver as a jerk and sometimes look to get even with him or her. This
bitter-hearted rebel also lived in many Jewish hearts. When Roman
soldiers imposed on them to carry their equipment, they resented it
deeply. Jesus reminds us, however, that his Kingdom Family reorders all
human relationships. Jesus wants us to ask, "How can I be a redemptive
blessing even toward those who mistreat me?" His challenging commands
awaken us to our responsibility. We are to lead others to Jesus, even
those others that we don't particularly like. Incredibly, the impetuous
Peter learned this lesson and taught the churches in Asia Minor the
same principle. Even more incredibly, the apostle Paul was the product
of a movement who sought to convert, not condemn, its greatest
opponents and oppressors. But then, the heart of the Kingdom is to
follow a King who forgave his persecutors, revilers, and murderers at
Passover so they could become his disciples at Pentecost.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Compassionate Father, please give me the grit and grace to act
redemptively in the lives of even those who are irritants, opponents,
and problems in my life. Through your Spirit, soften my heart that I
might see your goal of winning the most difficult people in my life to
Christ, rather than trying to get even with them. In Jesus' holy and
precious name I pray. Amen.
