=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

I Think I Am ..., by Tom Norvell

Confession: I like shoes. There, I've said it. I'm a shoe person.

Several years ago I found a pair of shoes that I loved. The way they
fit is the way a pair of shoes ought to fit. The way they look on my
feet is the way I want a pair of shoes to look. After wearing them for
a while I discovered that they aged the way a pair of shoes ought to
age. After wearing them for a while longer I began to look at other
styles made by the same company. They are too expensive for me to pay
full price so I began to watch for sales. Really good sales!

Eventually I purchased a second pair that I enjoyed just as much as the
first. About that time I decided that I would know I was rich when I
could have a pair of that brand of shoe in each color that I wear
regularly. Dark brown, black, tan, etc. Recently, during a prayer
(another confession: my eyes were open), I noticed my shoes and
realized that I'm rich. Some have been re-soled and re-heeled a number
of times. They still wear very well.

So, I think I'm rich.

That's quite a realization in this day of limited budgets, benefit
cutbacks, layoffs, and reduced retirement funds. I don't know where the
money we'll need to retire will come from. I don't have the money to
write a check to pay my daughter's college tuition. I cannot afford
tickets to the Final Four in the NCAA Basketball tournament, or the
Masters, or the NBA Championship. But, I think I'm rich.

So, I think I'm rich.

My feet are covered with very fine leather products. My body is clothed
with clean, comfortable, and high quality clothes. My refrigerator is
full of healthy and not so healthy food. My car has good tires, gets
routine maintenance, and I can afford to put fuel in it whenever
needed. Though I cannot afford to attend the sporting events mentioned
above, I am able to watch them on a very nice television while sitting
in a very comfortable chair. I guess I'm rich.

With those thoughts and confessions I often find myself praying this
prayer:

Two things I ask of you, O Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.

Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, 'Who is the Lord?'
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.
(Proverbs 30:7-9 NIV)

Father, thank you for blessing me so richly.

Morning & Evening -- Luke 23:26 and Proverbs 15:33

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, April 5, 2009

MORNING:

"On him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after
Jesus."
-- Luke 23:26

We see in Simon's carrying the cross a picture of the work of the
Church throughout all generations; she is the cross-bearer after Jesus.
Mark then, Christian, Jesus does not suffer so as to exclude your
suffering. He bears a cross, not that you may escape it, but that you
may endure it. Christ exempts you from sin, but not from sorrow.
Remember that, and expect to suffer.

But let us comfort ourselves with this thought, that in our case, as in
Simon's, it is not our cross, but Christ's cross which we carry. When
you are molested for your piety; when your religion brings the trial of
cruel mockings upon you, then remember it is not your cross, it is
Christ's cross; and how delightful is it to carry the cross of our Lord
Jesus!

You carry the cross after him. You have blessed company; your path is
marked with the footprints of your Lord. The mark of his blood-red
shoulder is upon that heavy burden. 'Tis his cross, and he goes before
you as a shepherd goes before his sheep. Take up your cross daily, and
follow him.

Do not forget, also, that you bear this cross in partnership. It is the
opinion of some that Simon only carried one end of the cross, and not
the whole of it. That is very possible; Christ may have carried the
heavier part, against the transverse beam, and Simon may have borne the
lighter end. Certainly it is so with you; you do but carry the light
end of the cross, Christ bore the heavier end.

And remember, though Simon had to bear the cross for a very little
while, it gave him lasting honour. Even so the cross we carry is only
for a little while at most, and then we shall receive the crown, the
glory. Surely we should love the cross, and, instead of shrinking from
it, count it very dear, when it works out for us "a far more exceeding
and eternal weight of glory."

EVENING:

"Before honour is humility."
-- Proverbs 15:33

Humiliation of soul always brings a positive blessing with it. If we
empty our hearts of self God will fill them with his love. He who
desires close communion with Christ should remember the word of the
Lord, "To this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a
contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word." Stoop if you would climb to
heaven. Do we not say of Jesus, "He descended that he might ascend?" so
must you. You must grow downwards, that you may grow upwards; for the
sweetest fellowship with heaven is to be had by humble souls, and by
them alone. God will deny no blessing to a thoroughly humbled spirit.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,"
with all its riches and treasures. The whole exchequer of God shall be
made over by deed of gift to the soul which is humble enough to be able
to receive it without growing proud because of it. God blesses us all
up to the full measure and extremity of what it is safe for him to do.
If you do not get a blessing, it is because it is not safe for you to
have one. If our heavenly Father were to let your unhumbled spirit win
a victory in his holy war, you would pilfer the crown for yourself, and
meeting with a fresh enemy you would fall a victim; so that you are
kept low for your own safety. When a man is sincerely humble, and never
ventures to touch so much as a grain of the praise, there is scarcely
any limit to what God will do for him. Humility makes us ready to be
blessed by the God of all grace, and fits us to deal efficiently with
our fellow men. True humility is a flower which will adorn any garden.
This is a sauce with which you may season every dish of life, and you
will find an improvement in every case. Whether it be prayer or praise,
whether it be work or suffering, the genuine salt of humility cannot be
used in excess.

My Utmost For His Highest : "His Agony And Our Fellowship"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 5, 2009

HIS AGONY AND OUR FELLOWSHIP

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called
Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, tarry ye here,
and watch with Me.

Matthew 26:36,38
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+26:36,38&sr=1

We can never fathom the agony in Gethsemane, but at least we need not
misunderstand it. It is the agony of God and Man in one, face to face
with sin. We know nothing about Gethsemane in personal experience.
Gethsemane and Calvary stand for something unique; they are the
gateway into Life for us.

It was not the death on the cross that Jesus feared in Gethsemane; He
stated most emphatically that He came on purpose to die. In
Gethsemane He feared lest He might not get through as Son of Man. He
would get through as Son of God - Satan could not touch Him there;
but Satan's onslaught was that He would get through as an isolated
Figure only; and that would mean that He could be no Saviour. Read
the record of the agony in the light of the temptation: "Then the
devil leaveth Him for a season." In Gethsemane Satan came back and
was again overthrown. Satan's final onslaught against our Lord as Son
of Man is in Gethsemane.

The agony in Gethsemane is the agony of the Son of God in fulfilling
His destiny as the Saviour of the world. The veil is drawn aside to
reveal all it cost Him to make it possible for us to become sons of
God. His agony is the basis of the simplicity of our salvation. The
Cross of Christ is a triumph for the Son of Man. It was not only a
sign that Our Lord had triumphed, but that He had triumphed to save
the human race. Every human being can get through into the presence
of God now because of what the Son of Man went through.

Praying with Paul : "My Body an Instrument"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

MY BODY AN INSTRUMENT

1 Corinthians 6:14-20
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+6:14-20

Dear Father, powerful and holy God,

This body of mine is not just temporary, meant for the decay of
the grave. You have promised to redeem it, to make it glorious like
Christ's. It will be my instrument to glorify you throughout
eternity. Let me use it with that thought in mind.

Surely you, God, who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead by your
power, will also raise my body by your power. Make me ever aware
that my body is a member of Christ's body. Shall I take the members
of Christ's body and join it with a prostitute? Never! How can I
become one body with someone who is evil when I am one spirit with
the Lord?

Help me to shun immorality, which, unlike other sin, is against my
own body. I consecrate my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit,
which I have received from you. Help me to know that I am not my
own but that I am bought with a price, the precious blood of Jesus,
and so let me glorify you in my body.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Tender Power -- Matthew 8:14-15

Tender Power

Jesus went to Peter's house. There Jesus saw that Peter's
mother-in-law was in bed with a high fever. Jesus touched her
hand and the fever left her. Then she stood up and began to
serve Jesus.

-- Matthew 8:14-15 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
This final episode in this series of miracle stories is told carefully
and succinctly. Clearly Jesus has the power to heal and Matthew shows
us who he gladly heals in these stories. He heals an outcast and
helpless leper with a word, he heals a powerful Gentile's servant from
long distance, and he heals the mother-in-law of Peter with a touch of
his hand. The whole range of humanity is represented -- a Jew, a
gentile, two men, and a woman. Jesus' power is displayed by word,
faith, and touch. We get to see the desperation of a leper, the faith
of a Centurion, the need of a friend, and the illness of a
mother-in-law. Matthew also lets us know what we are to do when we are
touched by Jesus' healing touch; like Peter's mother-in-law, we serve
the Lord!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Thank you, dear Father, for sending Jesus your Son to be my Savior.
Because of his earthly ministry, I am confident that you love me and
long for me to be whole. You have saved me from so many things; please
accept my service to you as my thanks for all you have done for me. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Philippians 4:5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 5, 2009

VERSE:
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.

-- Philippians 4:5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+4:5

THOUGHT:
Extravagant over-reaction! That's what we're programmed to seek
and to display in our modern world of sound bytes and over-hyped
personality. But gentleness, that moderating grace in the midst of
chaos and conflict, is so vital to bring the peace of God to
conflict-laden churches, families, and relationships. How can we be
gentle, how can we restrain from over-reacting to the wounds,
offenses, and slights that come our way? The Lord is near! He is
our vindication. He is our example. He is our comfort. He is our
hope. He is our strength. He is near. We are not alone and our
destiny, reputation, and value are not up to us to establish or to
defend.

PRAYER:
O LORD, my Father God, please be ever near me as I seek to be
your person of character in the middle of the chaos and conflict
around me. I ask that your presence be made known and that my
character reflect that presence in all that I do and say today, and
each day that follows. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
