=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Frantic Pursuit of Rest, by Bill Sherrill

A few years ago, a Hollywood "star type" was heard to say, "I think we
are rushing headlong into oblivion." It may have been a more profound
statement than it appeared. At the very least, we are rushing headlong
toward something. And the key word is "rushing." We rush to work. We
rush to dine. We even rush to relax. I think that last statement must
be an oxymoron, but whatever we call it, we certainly are rushing into
it. Peace and tranquility are seldom achieved in our pursuit of them.
Rather than peace, we are more likely to seek distraction. Noise,
visual images, and frantic activity are our constant companions.

Many people have turned to Eastern religions as a means of slowing down
the slide to eternity. Others have sought release through drugs. But
none of the things men have pursued have brought the desired effect.
Everything we do demands an escalation to remain effective. Eventually
it is out of control. For many, the only true peace appears to be to
drop out. Why do you suppose man has such a difficult time assembling
his life? It would appear that he follows the same reasoning in life
that he does in those purchases which need assembly. Question: When
does he read the instructions? Answer: When all else fails!

Most have never read it!

There is a Book of excellent instructions for a life of joy and peace,
but most have never really read it. They continue to try to force the
various parts together in a display of vain pride. The old saying,
"Please, I'd rather do it myself," is still very much alive. While that
sounds very independent, the truth is that we cannot!

I know, O LORD, that a man's way is not in himself; Nor is it in a
man who walks to direct his steps (Jeremiah 10:23 NASB).

The real answer is found in the Book. There, the master of Heaven and
Earth beckons us:

Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you
rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My
yoke is easy, and My load is light (Matthew 11:28-30)(Emphasis
added).

Soul rest is what we are really looking for. Everything else has
failed, why not read the instructions?

Morning & Evening -- Amos 9:9 and Mark 1:18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, June 20, 2008

MORNING:

"For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel
among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet
shall not the least grain fall upon the earth."
-- Amos 9:9

Every sifting comes by divine command and permission. Satan must ask
leave before he can lay a finger upon Job. Nay, more, in some sense our
siftings are directly the work of heaven, for the text says, "I will
sift the house of Israel." Satan, like a drudge, may hold the sieve,
hoping to destroy the corn; but the overruling hand of the Master is
accomplishing the purity of the grain by the very process which the
enemy intended to be destructive. Precious, but much sifted corn of the
Lord's floor, be comforted by the blessed fact that the Lord directeth
both flail and sieve to his own glory, and to thine eternal profit.

The Lord Jesus will surely use the fan which is in his hand, and will
divide the precious from the vile. All are not Israel that are of
Israel; the heap on the barn floor is not clean provender, and hence
the winnowing process must be performed. In the sieve true weight alone
has power. Husks and chaff being devoid of substance must fly before
the wind, and only solid corn will remain.

Observe the complete safety of the Lord's wheat; even the least grain
has a promise of preservation. God himself sifts, and therefore it is
stern and terrible work; he sifts them in all places, "among all
nations"; he sifts them in the most effectual manner, "like as corn is
sifted in a sieve"; and yet for all this, not the smallest, lightest,
or most shrivelled grain, is permitted to fall to the ground. Every
individual believer is precious in the sight of the Lord, a shepherd
would not lose one sheep, nor a jeweller one diamond, nor a mother one
child, nor a man one limb of his body, nor will the Lord lose one of
his redeemed people. However little we may be, if we are the Lord's, we
may rejoice that we are preserved in Christ Jesus.

EVENING:

"Straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him."
-- Mark 1:18

When they heard the call of Jesus, Simon and Andrew obeyed at once
without demur. If we would always, punctually and with resolute zeal,
put in practice what we hear upon the spot, or at the first fit
occasion, our attendance at the means of grace, and our reading of good
books, could not fail to enrich us spiritually. He will not lose his
loaf who has taken care at once to eat it, neither can he be deprived
of the benefit of the doctrine who has already acted upon it. Most
readers and hearers become moved so far as to purpose to amend; but,
alas! the proposal is a blossom which has not been knit, and therefore
no fruit comes of it; they wait, they waver, and then they forget,
till, like the ponds in nights of frost, when the sun shines by day,
they are only thawed in time to be frozen again. That fatal to-morrow
is blood-red with the murder of fair resolutions; it is the
slaughter-house of the innocents. We are very concerned that our little
book of "Evening Readings" should not be fruitless, and therefore we
pray that readers may not be readers only, but doers, of the word. The
practice of truth is the most profitable reading of it. Should the
reader be impressed with any duty while perusing these pages, let him
hasten to fulfil it before the holy glow has departed from his soul,
and let him leave his nets, and all that he has, sooner than be found
rebellious to the Master's call. Do not give place to the devil by
delay! Haste while opportunity and quickening are in happy conjunction.
Do not be caught in your own nets, but break the meshes of worldliness,
and away where glory calls you. Happy is the writer who shall meet with
readers resolved to carry out his teachings: his harvest shall be a
hundredfold, and his Master shall have great honour. Would to God that
such might be our reward upon these brief meditations and hurried
hints. Grant it, O Lord, unto thy servant!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Have You Come To "When" Yet?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

June 20, 2008

HAVE YOU COME TO "WHEN" YET?

And the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed
for his friends.

Job 42:10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=job+42:10&sr=1

The plaintive, self-centred, morbid kind of prayer, a dead-set that I
want to be right, is never found in the New Testament. The fact that
I am trying to be right with God is a sign that I am rebelling
against the Atonement. "Lord, I will purify my heart if You will
answer my prayer; I will walk rightly if You will help me." I cannot
make myself right with God, I cannot make my life perfect; I can only
be right with God if I accept the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ
as an absolute gift. Am I humble enough to accept it? I have to
resign every kind of claim and cease from every effort, and leave
myself entirely alone in His hands, and then begin to pour out in the
priestly work of intercession. There is much prayer that arises from
real disbelief in the Atonement. Jesus is not beginning to save us,
He has saved us, the thing is done, and it is an insult to ask Him to
do it.

If you are not getting the hundredfold more, not getting insight into
God's word, then start praying for your friends, enter into the
ministry of the interior. "The Lord turned the captivity of Job when
he prayed for his friends." The real business of your life as a saved
soul is intercessory prayer. Wherever God puts you in circumstances,
pray immediately, pray that His Atonement may be realized in other
lives as it has been in yours. Pray for your friends now; pray for
those with whom you come in contact now.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Bible Plan 4

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Bible Plan 4
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22-23 NIV

The Bible is meant to change your life!

Let me cut to the chase. I dont want to waste your time as you read this. It's one thing to have good intentions about reading God's Word. It's another to actually do it. My prayer is that you and I would become serious students of the Bible. I pray that you and I would make time and find time to spend more quantity and quality of time in Scripture.

(I suspect we have more time than we have led ourselves to believe we do.) It would be wonderful if something in this series would prompt you to open the pages of your Bible and absorb Gods Word into your heart and mind.

But, (theres always a but, isnt there?) it is not going to do you any good to simply read it, you must apply it to your life! Youve got to take what you read and act upon it! Then Gods Word will begin to bear fruit in your life.

Im not going to ask you to tell me, God already knows anyway, but how much time did you spend in Gods Word this week? Is that time an adequate reflection of your love for Him?

This is invitation time. Dont respond unless you are willing to do this, but if you will commit to read Gods Word everyday for the next 30 days, I want you to send me an email. Simply reply to this email or send it to ron.mustardseed@christweb.com You dont have to tell me anything except I will. I will pray with you about this commitment. That 30 days may just change your life!

Praying with Paul : "My Perfect Weakness"

MY PERFECT WEAKNESS

2 Corinthians 12:1-10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+12:1-10

Dear Father,

Put your hand over my mouth to keep me from boasting about myself.
Even if I were to have visions and revelations about you or to be
caught up to Paradise and hear things too sacred to be told, let me
boast only of my weaknesses.

If you limit me, inflict pain on me, cause me to struggle and cry
out for relief, let me come back to trusting you.

Your grace is sufficient for me. Your power is made perfect in
weakness.

In the name of him who is my strength, Jesus Christ. Amen.

WJD! -- The Fall Revisited -- Mark 9:33-34

The Fall Revisited

Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. They went into a
house. Then Jesus said to his followers, "I heard you arguing
on the road today. What were you arguing about?" But the
followers did not answer, because their argument on the road
was about which one of them was the greatest.

-- Mark 9:33-34 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Sin entered the world because human beings wanted to be as important as
God. So often, our sins still center around our desire to be our own
little gods. Maybe we don't want to be in charge of the whole universe,
but we do want to be the most important and significant person in our
own sphere of existence. We want to be the greatest in our own world.
This is where inviting Jesus into our presence and being honest with
him about our desires are crucial. We can't invite the one who left
heaven to serve earthlings into our presence without falling under
conviction that our desires for greatness are selfish arrogance and not
a desire for excellence. In fact, Jesus personifies excellence and
redefines what a Christ-follower's life of excellence is all about --
self-sacrificing service to others, as the next verses show.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, please gently humble me. Remove the dross of my character.
Purge out the arrogance and selfishness of my heart so that I can serve
you, and others, with Christ-like love and care. In Jesus' name. Amen.

June 20, 2008

VERSE:
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and
rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
-- Matthew 6:20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Matthew+6:20

THOUGHT:
Where's your treasure? What are you doing to invest in long term
security? Why not make sure your most important investments are
guaranteed a great return!

PRAYER:
Abba Father, I know that the only true security I can ever have
is in you. Please give me wisdom as I seek to use my time, my
talents, and my treasure to honor you and bring others to you. In
Jesus name I pray. Amen.
