Today's Verse : 1 John 2:1-2

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 1, 2008

VERSE:
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.
But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in
our defense -- Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning
sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins
of the whole world.
-- 1 John 2:1-2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+2:1-2

THOUGHT:
John wants to prevent even one sinful event in the lives of
those he loves. He is concerned because he knows that even one
sinful event can be used by Satan to discourage and defeat us. We
need to know that we have a Savior and a defender. He paid the
price to redeem us, he sent his Spirit to help us overcome sin's
power, and he will speak to the Father and claim that right to
forgive us.

PRAYER:
Father, I'm embarrassed by my weakness and vulnerability when I
sin. Even in those moments of shame, I'm thankful that Jesus
provided me the way back into your holy presence. Jesus, I thank
you for coming to my rescue and my defense. I will not let Satan
discourage me when I fall. Instead, I re-commit myself to live with
your character and for your glory. In the name of Jesus, my Lord
and my defender, I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Offended Four

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Offended Four
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11 NIV

Are you aiming for perfection? That should be the goal of the believer; to be like Christ in all that we do. That is especially true in how we relate to others. Since the first and greatest commandment and is to love God and love others, how we relate to others is vitally important. We must strive not to be offensive.

It occurred to me as I was preparing for this series that some people are just naturally offensive people. Dont take offense to that statement. If you do, you may need to!

Part of being people who dont offend people willingly is examining our own lives to see if we are offensive. If you are the one constantly saying the wrong thing; if you consistently hurt peoples feelings; if every joke you tell makes people uncomfortable or even angry, could the prob lem with offending people be YOU?

I know people who have no regard for anyone elses feelings and they just chalk it up to Thats the way I am! That may be their answer, but Im not sure thats a good one. I am not to be like me. I am to be like Christ. There is a world of difference between the two.

Who are you striving to be like? Are you striving to be like Christ? Today, spend some time alone with Christ asking Him to help you examine yourself to see if you are the problem in offensive relationships.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Look Up!, by Mike Barres

I was out hiking. It was very cold. The ground was frozen. As the sun
was shining on the frozen ground, it began to melt. Leaves were
everywhere. This combination of frost, water and leaves made that walk
very slippery. I had a couple of energetic dogs on a leash that were a
bit hard to manage. The terrain where we were hiking was very
mountainous.

As you add up all of these factors, you can imagine that I lost my
footing numerous times. I would slip, and a couple times fell. This
made me focus intently on where I was walking. There might be a branch
or a rock under the leaves that would make me trip. Walking along the
face of a hill, the leaves made it slippery. I would have to look
intently at the ground to try to get sure footing. Remember, I also had
two energetic dogs on a leash, pulling me in different directions at
the same time.

Next thing you know I am on the ground, my head hurts and my arm hurts.
I had been focusing so much on the ground that I failed to see the low
branch that hit my head. I immediately fell backwards and hurt my arm
trying to brace my fall. I let go of the dogs and had to call to my
friends to get them. As I got up, I had to bend my glasses back in to
shape. I had a pretty good knot on my head and was embarrassed. My
focus had been downward. I needed to "look up."

Sometimes we focus on our problems so much that we take our eyes off of
God. He can help us through our difficult times. He can give us
strength. He can comfort us and give us direction.

In your time of need, "look up!"

If all we do is look down, we are bound to stumble and fall. We can't
live by our own strength. The great prophet reminded God's people to
look to Him, not others:

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, who
trust in chariots because they are many, And in horsemen because
they are very strong, but who do not look to the Holy One of
Israel, nor seek the LORD! (Isaiah 31:1 NKJV).

Spending time with the Lord on a daily basis can really help us. God
cries to us, "My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the
morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up" (Psalm 5:3).

In your time of need, "look up!"

I will lift up my eyes to the hills -- from whence comes my help?
My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not
allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber (Psalm
121:1-3).

Morning & Evening -- Jeremiah 23:6 and 2 Samuel 18:23

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, January 31, 2008

MORNING:

"The Lord our Righteousness."
-- Jeremiah 23:6

It will always give a Christian the greatest calm, quiet, ease, and
peace, to think of the perfect righteousness of Christ. How often are
the saints of God downcast and sad! I do not think they ought to be. I
do not think they would if they could always see their perfection in
Christ. There are some who are always talking about corruption, and the
depravity of the heart, and the innate evil of the soul. This is quite
true, but why not go a little further, and remember that we are
"perfect in Christ Jesus." It is no wonder that those who are dwelling
upon their own corruption should wear such downcast looks; but surely
if we call to mind that "Christ is made unto us righteousness," we
shall be of good cheer. What though distresses afflict me, though Satan
assault me, though there may be many things to be experienced before I
get to heaven, those are done for me in the covenant of divine grace;
there is nothing wanting in my Lord, Christ hath done it all. On the
cross he said, "It is finished!" and if it be finished, then am I
complete in him, and can rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of
glory, "Not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but
that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is
of God by faith." You will not find on this side heaven a holier people
than those who receive into their hearts the doctrine of Christ's
righteousness. When the believer says, "I live on Christ alone; I rest
on him solely for salvation; and I believe that, however unworthy, I am
still saved in Jesus;" then there rises up as a motive of gratitude
this thought-"Shall I not live to Christ? Shall I not love him and
serve him, seeing that I am saved by his merits?" "The love of Christ
constraineth us," "that they which live should not henceforth live unto
themselves but unto him which died for them." If saved by imputed
righteousness, we shall greatly value imparted righteousness.

EVENING:

"Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Cushi."
-- 2 Samuel 18:23

Running is not everything, there is much in the way which we select: a
swift foot over hill and down dale will not keep pace with a slower
traveller upon level ground. How is it with my spiritual journey, am I
labouring up the hill of my own works and down into the ravines of my
own humiliations and resolutions, or do I run by the plain way of
"Believe and live"? How blessed is it to wait upon the Lord by faith!
The soul runs without weariness, and walks without fainting, in the way
of believing. Christ Jesus is the way of life, and he is a plain way, a
pleasant way, a way suitable for the tottering feet and feeble knees of
trembling sinners: am I found in this way, or am I hunting after
another track such as priestcraft or metaphysics may promise me? I read
of the way of holiness, that the wayfaring man, though a fool, shall
not err therein: have I been delivered from proud reason and been
brought as a little child to rest in Jesus' love and blood? If so, by
God's grace I shall outrun the strongest runner who chooses any other
path. This truth I may remember to my profit in my daily cares and
needs. It will be my wisest course to go at once to my God, and not to
wander in a roundabout manner to this friend and that. He knows my
wants and can relieve them, to whom should I repair but to himself by
the direct appeal of prayer, and the plain argument of the promise.
"Straightforward makes the best runner." I will not parlay with the
servants, but hasten to their master.

In reading this passage, it strikes me that if men vie with each other
in common matters, and one outruns the other, I ought to be in solemn
earnestness so to run that I may obtain. Lord, help me to gird up the
loins of my mind, and may I press forward towards the mark for the
prize of my high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Do You See Your Calling?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 31, 2008

DO YOU SEE YOUR CALLING?

Separated unto the Gospel.

Romans 1:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ro+1:1&sr=1

Our calling is not primarily to be holy men and women, but to be
proclaimers of the Gospel of God. The one thing that is all important
is that the Gospel of God should be realized as the abiding Reality.
Reality is not human goodness, nor holiness, nor heaven, nor hell;
but Redemption; and the need to perceive this is the most vital need
of the Christian worker to-day. As workers we have to get used to the
revelation that Redemption is the only Reality. Personal holiness is
an effect, not a cause, and if we place our faith in human goodness,
in the effect of Redemption, we shall go under when the test comes.

Paul did not say he separated himself, but - "when it pleased God who
separated me. . ." Paul had not a hypersensitive interest in his own
character. As long as our eyes are upon our own personal whiteness we
shall never get near the reality of Redemption. Workers break down
because their desire is for their own whiteness, and not for God.
"Don't ask me to come into contact with the rugged reality of
Redemption on behalf of the filth of human life as it is; wbat I want
is anything God can do for me to make me more desirable in my own
eyes." To talk in that way is a sign that the reality of the Gospel
of God has not begun to touch me; there is no reckless abandon to
God. God cannot deliver me while my interest is merely in my own
character. Paul is unconscious of himself, he is recklessly
abandoned, separated by God for one purpose - to proclaim the Gospel
of God (cf. Rom. 9:3.)

Praying with Paul : "Christ Living in Me"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

CHRIST LIVING IN ME

Romans 8:9-15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:9-15

Dear Father, who indwells me,

Show me that I do not really live in the flesh, since your Spirit
really dwells in me, else I would not belong to you. So with Christ
living in me, my spirit is alive because of righteousness, even
though my body is dead (doomed for decay!) because of sin.

May the same Spirit which dwelled in Jesus continue to dwell in me
and give life to my mortal body. Enable me by the Spirit to put to
death the deeds of the sinful body, and thus find life. Help me
cast off the spirit of slavery, and be a true son of yours.

Thank you that I can call you "Abba, Father," as a fearless
testimony of my sonship. Thank you, God, for condescending to be my
Father and for making me an heir of your glory.

It is in the name of Jesus and by his authority that I have such
boldness to come to you, asking these things according to his will.
Amen.

WJD! -- Faithful Friends -- Mark 2:3-5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Faithful Friends

Some people brought a paralyzed (crippled) man to Jesus. Four
men were carrying the paralyzed man. But they could not bring
the man to Jesus because the house was full of people. So the
men went to the roof above Jesus and made a hole in the roof.
Then they lowered the mat with the paralyzed man on it. Jesus
saw that these men had much faith. So Jesus said to the
paralyzed man, "Young man, your sins are forgiven."

-- Mark 2:3-5 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Notice what is the basis of this miracle. "Seeing THEIR faith ..." The
four men were the ones who helped make this miracle possible. It wasn't
just their willingness to help the man, but it was their faith that if
they got their friend to Jesus then the Lord would do great things for
him. They were right. The question, however, is whether or not we will
be so bold in our faith with our friends.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, please strengthen my faith and use me to bring those who are
broken, lost, and hurting to experience the gracious and powerful gift
of your Son's love. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : Proverbs 1:29,31

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 31, 2008

VERSE:
Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD
.. they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the
fruit of their schemes.
-- Proverbs 1:29,31

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Proverbs+1:29,31

THOUGHT:
Sometimes the natural consequence of rebellion is its own
justice. Rebellion ultimately produces bad fruit, and wickedness is
often its own worst punishment. In the face of such a generous God
as we focused upon yesterday, how could we choose to follow any
other path but his? It may seem harder in the short run, but in the
long run there is simply no option that compares!

PRAYER:
Father of justice and mercy, thank you for saving me by your
grace. Thank you for promising to judge the world with grace,
mercy, and justice. In you, and you alone, do I find my sense of
what is right and fair. I cry out to you, O God, for justice and
deliverance for your people who are oppressed, ridiculed, and
persecuted. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Offended Three

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Offended Three
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

Romans 14:19 NIV

What do you do once you have offended someone? Obviously there will be times when offending someone is unavoidable. Some people easily misunderstand what others say. Some people just seem to carry their feelings on their shoulders. So, since people will get offended, what can we do to try and repair or restore a healthy relationship?

First, I think we must work to rebuild trust. Trust is built over time. Trust is usually not given lightly or blindly. Allow the person you have offended time to regain your trust. Trust is rebuilt as the other party sees you being trustworthy, so be a trustworthy person in all your dealings with the offended party.

Second, be sure to seek forgiveness. Part of having healthy relationships is that there are no wedges between you and the others in the relationship. Be quick to offer forgive ness. Extend grace if required. If applicable, pay back anything that is owed by you to the offended person.

Third, live with a forgiven heart. Dont be a martyr about the things youve done wrong. That is never an appealing quality. If you offended someone, seek forgiveness and then move forward. Dont continue to beat yourself up over the offense. Dont allow the other party to use the offense against you. Once God has forgiven you and you have genuinely sought forgiveness from the offended person, you are freed to move forward with your life. (That doesnt mean there will not be consequences for your offense. If you did something legally wrong, for example, you will still face legal consequences, but in an emotional and spiritual sense you are free to move forward.)

Part of living in community with other believers is trying hard not to offend people, but then working to resolve that offense once it occurs.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

End of the Year Farewells, by Steve Ridgell

Every magazine and newspaper does the same thing in early January.
They publish the "Farewell" section listing all the notable people who
died the previous year. The list for 2007 was interesting. There were
politicians (Boris Yeltsin, Kurt Waldheim). There were entertainers
(Luciano Pavarotti, Marcel Marceau, Beverly Sills). Writers were listed
(Arthur Schlesinger, Sidney Sheldon, Norman Mailer), as were athletes
(Phil Rizzuto, Bill Walsh). Then there were the people who were famous
(Lady Bird Johnson, Evil Knievel, Anna Nicole Smith).

Of course, my hometown newspaper lists five to ten people every day who
have died, plus another fifteen or so from surrounding areas. And I
live in a fairly small city. I conducted several funerals this year,
and attended several more.

So what is the connection between the people in the first paragraph and
those in the second? They all died. Some were famous, some not; some
were rich, some not; some were mourned, some probably not. But they did
all die. And so will you and I. Maybe not this year, or next, but
someday. This life does not last. Most of you recognized many names
above, but your kids would not. One hundred years from now, few will be
remembered. And one thousand years from now, only a few will have a
footnote in some out dated book.

So what is the point of life? If we are all going to die, and no one
will remember us, what is the point of fame, money, accomplishments? It
is to give yourself to something that matters long after you are gone.
It is to make a difference for ever. It is to know that your life means
something. It is to know that someone will know you for a hundred, or a
thousand, or a thousand, thousand years.

You will be known and remembered forever because your life made a
difference.

If you want to know your life matters, I can tell you how. It will not
surprise you to hear me say I have found meaning and purpose for my
life that will last forever. And it has nothing to do with me.

MORNING:

"When thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the

-- 2 Samuel 5:24

The members of Christ's Church should be very prayerful, always seeking
the unction of the Holy One to rest upon their hearts, that the kingdom
of Christ may come, and that his "will be done on earth, even as it is
in heaven;" but there are times when God seems especially to favour
Zion, such seasons ought to be to them like "the sound of a going in
the tops of the mulberry trees." We ought then to be doubly prayerful,
doubly earnest, wrestling more at the throne than we have been wont to
do. Action should then be prompt and vigorous. The tide is flowing-now
let us pull manfully for the shore. O for Pentecostal outpourings and
Pentecostal labours. Christian, in yourself there are times "when thou
hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees." You
have a peculiar power in prayer; the Spirit of God gives you joy and
gladness; the Scripture is open to you; the promises are applied; you
walk in the light of God's countenance; you have peculiar freedom and
liberty in devotion, and more closeness of communion with Christ than
was your wont. Now, at such joyous periods when you hear the "sound of
a going in the tops of the mulberry trees," is the time to bestir
yourself; now is the time to get rid of any evil habit, while God the
Spirit helpeth your infirmities. Spread your sail; but remember what
you sometimes sing-

"I can only spread the sail;
Thou! Thou! must breathe the auspicious gale."

Only be sure you have the sail up. Do not miss the gale for want of
preparation for it. Seek help of God, that you may be more earnest in
duty when made more strong in faith; that you may be more constant in
prayer when you have more liberty at the throne; that you may be more
holy in your conversation whilst you live more closely with Christ.

EVENING:

"In whom also we have obtained an inheritance."
-- Ephesians 1:11

When Jesus gave himself for us, he gave us all the rights and
privileges which went with himself; so that now, although as eternal
God, he has essential rights to which no creature may venture to
pretend, yet as Jesus, the Mediator, the federal head of the covenant
of grace, he has no heritage apart from us. All the glorious
consequences of his obedience unto death are the joint riches of all
who are in him, and on whose behalf he accomplished the divine will.
See, he enters into glory, but not for himself alone, for it is
written, "Whither the Forerunner is for us entered." Heb. 6:20. Does he
stand in the presence of God?-"He appears in the presence of God for
us." Heb. 9:24. Consider this, believer. You have no right to heaven in
yourself: your right lies in Christ. If you are pardoned, it is through
his blood; if you are justified, it is through his righteousness; if
you are sanctified, it is because he is made of God unto you
sanctification; if you shall be kept from falling, it will be because
you are preserved in Christ Jesus; and if you are perfected at the
last, it will be because you are complete in him. Thus Jesus is
magnified-for all is in him and by him; thus the inheritance is made
certain to us-for it is obtained in him; thus each blessing is the
sweeter, and even heaven itself the brighter, because it is Jesus our
Beloved "in whom" we have obtained all. Where is the man who shall
estimate our divine portion? Weigh the riches of Christ in scales, and
his treasure in balances, and then think to count the treasures which
belong to the saints. Reach the bottom of Christ's sea of joy, and then
hope to understand the bliss which God hath prepared for them that love
him. Overleap the boundaries of Christ's possessions, and then dream of
a limit to the fair inheritance of the elect. "All things are yours,
for ye are Christ's and Christ is God's."

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Dilemma Of Obedience"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 30, 2008

THE DILEMMA OF OBEDIENCE

And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

1 Samuel 3:15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1sa+3:15&sr=1

God never speaks to us in startling ways, but in ways that are easy
to misunderstand, and we say, "I wonder if that is God's voice?"
Isaiah said that the Lord spake to him "with a strong hand," that is,
by the pressure of circumstances. Nothing touches our lives but it is
God Himself speaking. Do we discern His hand or only mere occurrence?

Get into the habit of saying, "Speak, Lord," and life will become a
romance. Every time circumstances press, say, "Speak, Lord"; make
time to listen. Chastening is more than a means of discipline, it is
meant to get me to the place of saying, "Speak, Lord." Recall the
time when God did speak to you. Have you forgotten what He said? Was
it Luke 11:13, or was it 1 Thess. 5:23? As we listen, our ear gets
acute, and, like Jesus, we shall hear God all the time.

Shall I tell my "Eli" what God has shown to me? That is where the
dilemma of obedience comes in. We disobey God by becoming amateur
providences - I must shield "Eli," the best people we know. God did
not tell Samuel to tell Eli; he had to decide that for himself. God's
call to you may hurt your "Eli;" but if you try to prevent the
suffering in another life, it will prove an obstruction between your
soul and God. It is at your own peril that you prevent the cutting
off of the right hand or the plucking out of the eye.

Never ask the advice of another about anything God makes you decide
before Him. If you ask advice, you will nearly always side with
Satan. "Immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood."

Praying with Paul : "Walking in the Spirit"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:1-8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:1-8

Dear Father,

Thank you that there is no condemnation for me now that I am in
Christ Jesus. Through the principle of the Spirit of life in him I
have been set free from the principle of sin and death.

You, my God, did what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not
do. You sent your own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for
sin. Through him you condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the
just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in your people, of
which I am one.

Help me walk not according to the flesh, but according to the
Spirit. Set my mind on your Spirit, so I might live by your Spirit
and find life and peace.

It is in the name of Jesus, who gives his Spirit, that I pray
these things. Amen.

WJD! -- A Large Crowd Finds Good News -- Mark 2:1-2

A Large Crowd Finds Good News

A few days later, Jesus came back to Capernaum. The news
spread that Jesus was back home. Many, many people gathered
to hear Jesus speak. The house was full. There was no place
to stand, not even outside the door. Jesus was teaching these
people.

-- Mark 2:1-2 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Once again, the crowds swarmed to see Jesus, presumably because they
had heard of his miraculous power to cure lepers, to heal the sick, and
to cast out demons. However, Jesus chose to teach rather than to heal
with such a great crowd assembled. He was called to preach (Mark 1:38).
His focus was giving people the good news of God's Kingdom and calling
them to repentance (Mark 1:15). Rather than gaining fame, Jesus wanted
to win hearts to God. While we all may be tempted to try to impress
large crowds and to win fame for ourselves, Jesus' example is a
powerful reminder that the most important thing we can do is to help
folks understand the message of God by our words and our actions.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and tender Father, give me the courage and the sensitivity to
share your message with others and to call them to change their lives
to honor you. Give me wisdom, dear God, to know how to best do this
with gentleness and respect. Help me discern the best time and the best
method to share this good news with the people around me. Thank you for
your help and guidance in this importance task. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 30, 2008

VERSE:
...you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from
God -- that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the
Lord."
-- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+1:30-31

THOUGHT:
Jesus is our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Let's
unpack those church words. Righteousness -- the ability to stand
before God and be declared free from guilt. Holiness -- the
character and nature that reflect the glory and sanctity of heaven.
Redemption -- the gift of freedom bought at great expense.
Christians aren't perfect? Hmmm! We know this is true. But, because
of Jesus' loving sacrifice, we also know that in God's eyes we're
righteous, holy, and redeemed. That, dear friend of Jesus, is what
we call amazing grace!

PRAYER:
How can I thank you, wise and merciful Father, for the gift of
Jesus? Your love in formulating the plan to send him, your
sacrifice in having him become mortal, your agony when your own
creations murdered him are too wonderful for understanding. But in
my heart I do know that you did these things because of your loving
grace and I want to thank you and praise you forever. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.
