Today's Verse : Philippians 1:20

November 16, 2007

VERSE:
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but
will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be
exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
-- Philippians 1:20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philippians+1:20

THOUGHT:
Do you have ultimate goals by which you live? Paul certainly had
at least these two: "I don't want to be ashamed but courageous" and
"I want Christ to be exalted in my body, by life or by death." What
are yours? Could you join Paul in his ultimate goals? How are these
ultimate goals good for all of us? What makes it hard to live with
these ultimate goals? They are good for us because they remind us
that, even though the Spirit helps us, it takes courage to live for
Jesus and for him to be exalted by the way we live or die, and it
is hard to live a different type of life from most of those around
us.

PRAYER:
Sacrificial and all-powerful God, forgive me for my sins,
especially the sin of living with improper priorities. I want your
grace and your loving-kindness to be seen in the way I conduct my
life. In addition, please give me the courage to say what needs to
be said to exalt you and to bring you praise. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Abraham Four

So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. Genesis 12:4 NIV

Abram, better known to us as Abraham, believed God, and the Bible says it was credited to him as righteousness. That means that, even though Abram was a sinner, just like you and me, because he had a faith that wanted to please and obey God, God excused his sinfulness and extended grace to him that he might be saved. God is still extending grace even today!

The point I hope you have gleaned from this four day look at Abram's calling is not what a great guy Abram was; even though he was a great man of God. I don't want you to see even the faith that Abram exhibited in his obedience; even though that is a tremendous discussion in and of itself. I want you to see that Abram could indeed obey God, because he had experienced God first hand. God was a part of his history. The Scripture says God "had told" Abram. It was past tense, because Abram had a regular practice of spending time with God. What made Abram special, what made God get involved in his life and change his name to Abraham, the man of faith, is that Abram got to know God in a real and personal way.

Dear friend, if you are struggling in your relationship with the Lord, if you just can't seem to "get it all together" in your Christian walk, if there just doesn't seem to be the spiritual growth you desire and that you see in others, perhaps you need an encounter with the Living God. Perhaps you need to make God a part of your daily life, and tomorrow you can say "God had said".

God wants to talk with you. He wants you to know Him better. Why not start today? Who knows, He might even give you a new name!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Value of Small, by Tom Norvell

Is it possible that we have misunderstood, or ignored, the value of
small? Jesus saw something in smallness that we may overlook.

Consider these statements:

"'When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for
one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me'" (Matthew
25:39-40 NIV).

"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or
thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and
did not help you?'

"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for
one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to
eternal life" (Matthew 25:44-46).

Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him
stand beside him. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this
little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me
welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all --
he is the greatest" (Luke 9:47-49).

"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything
you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For
where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them"
(Matthew 18:19-20).

Jesus saw the value of small.

We tend to focus on big. Big cars. Big houses. Big churches. Big
budgets. Big signs. Big events. Big bank accounts. Big projects. Big
attendance. Big numbers. Big buildings. From the outside looking in,
would it appear that we believe that big equals better?

Pay attention to the small stuff.

Jesus did not seem to be implying that big is necessarily bad. He also
encouraged us to have enough faith to do big things. He emphasized
having a faith that will move mountains, faith to walk on water, and
that the disciple's faith would enable them to do even greater things
than they had seen Him do.

However, we must not forget that those big things begin with something
small: faith the size of a mustard seed, taking one step outside of the
boat, serving one another, and washing feet. Jesus pointed to children
as our example of what "the kingdom is like." He spoke of being the
least in the kingdom. He reminds of the importance of simply offering
someone a cup of water.

Perhaps we should consider our plans and reevaluate our approach to
life and to ministry. We would do well not to allow ourselves to be so
enamored by the big that we miss the value of the small. It may very
well be that the greatest impact you will have this week in the life of
another human being will come from doing something small. One
conversation. A word of gratitude. A kind comment. A one-on-one
conversation. A moment of listening. A small group study. Two or three
gathered to pray. A single thoughtful act. A good application of the
Scripture. A phone call. A text message. An email. A gentle touch. A
note of encouragement. A small gift. An hour of your time.

Just this week, pay attention to small. Let God turn it into something
big ... but only if He wants it to be big.

Morning & Evening -- Deuteronomy 32:9 and Psalms 68:28

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, November 15, 2007

MORNING:

"The Lord's portion is his people."
-- Deuteronomy 32:9

How are they his? By his own sovereign choice. He chose them, and set
his love upon them. This he did altogether apart from any goodness in
them at the time, or any goodness which he foresaw in them. He had
mercy on whom he would have mercy, and ordained a chosen company unto
eternal life; thus, therefore, are they his by his unconstrained
election.

They are not only his by choice, but by purchase. He has bought and
paid for them to the utmost farthing, hence about his title there can
be no dispute. Not with corruptible things, as with silver and gold,
but with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord's
portion has been fully redeemed. There is no mortgage on his estate; no
suits can be raised by opposing claimants, the price was paid in open
court, and the Church is the Lord's freehold for ever. See the
blood-mark upon all the chosen, invisible to human eye, but known to
Christ, for "the Lord knoweth them that are his"; he forgetteth none of
those whom he has redeemed from among men; he counts the sheep for whom
he laid down his life, and remembers well the Church for which he gave
himself.

They are also his by conquest. What a battle he had in us before we
would be won! How long he laid siege to our hearts! How often he sent
us terms of capitulation! but we barred our gates, and fenced our walls
against him. Do we not remember that glorious hour when he carried our
hearts by storm? When he placed his cross against the wall, and scaled
our ramparts, planting on our strongholds the blood-red flag of his
omnipotent mercy? Yes, we are, indeed, the conquered captives of his
omnipotent love. Thus chosen, purchased, and subdued, the rights of our
divine possessor are inalienable: we rejoice that we never can be our
own; and we desire, day by day, to do his will, and to show forth his
glory.

EVENING:

"Strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us."
-- Psalms 68:28

It is our wisdom, as well as our necessity, to beseech God continually
to strengthen that which he has wrought in us. It is because of their
neglect in this, that many Christians may blame themselves for those
trials and afflictions of spirit which arise from unbelief. It is true
that Satan seeks to flood the fair garden of the heart and make it a
scene of desolation, but it is also true that many Christians leave
open the sluice-gates themselves, and let in the dreadful deluge
through carelessness and want of prayer to their strong Helper. We
often forget that the Author of our faith must be the Preserver of it
also. The lamp which was burning in the temple was never allowed to go
out, but it had to be daily replenished with fresh oil; in like manner,
our faith can only live by being sustained with the oil of grace, and
we can only obtain this from God himself. Foolish virgins we shall
prove, if we do not secure the needed sustenance for our lamps. He who
built the world upholds it, or it would fall in one tremendous crash;
he who made us Christians must maintain us by his Spirit, or our ruin
will be speedy and final. Let us, then, evening by evening, go to our
Lord for the grace and strength we need. We have a strong argument to
plead, for it is his own work of grace which we ask him to
strengthen-"that which thou hast wrought for us." Think you he will
fail to protect and sustain that? Only let your faith take hold of his
strength, and all the powers of darkness, led on by the master fiend of
hell, cannot cast a cloud or shadow over your joy and peace. Why faint
when you may be strong? Why suffer defeat when you may conquer? Oh!
take your wavering faith and drooping graces to him who can revive and
replenish them, and earnestly pray, "Strengthen, O God, that which thou
hast wrought for us."

My Utmost For His Highest : "What Is That To Thee?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

November 15, 2007

WHAT IS THAT TO THEE?

Lord, what shall this man do? . . What is that to thee?
Follow thou Me.

John 21:21,2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+21:21,2&sr=1

One of our severest lessons comes from the stubborn refusal to see
that we must not interfere in other people's lives. It takes a long
time to realize the danger of being an amateur providence, that is,
interfering with God's order for others. You see a certain person
suffering, and you say - He shall not suffer, and I will see that he
does not. You put your band straight in front of God's permissive
will to prevent it, and God says - "What is that to thee?" If there
is stagnation spiritually, never allow it to go on, but get into
God's presence and find out the reason for it. Possibly you will find
it is because you have been interfering in the life of another;
proposing things you had no right to propose; advising when you had
no right to advise. When you do have to give advice to another, God
will advise through you with the direct understanding of His Spirit;
your part is to be so rightly related to God that His discernment
comes through you all the time for the blessing of another soul.

Most of us live on the borders of consciousness - consciously
serving, consciously devoted to God. All this is immature, it is not
the real life yet. The mature stage is the life of a child which is
never conscious; we become so abandoned to God that the consciousness
of being used never enters in. When we are consciously being used as
broken bread and poured-out wine, there is another stage to be
reached, where all consciousness of ourselves and of what God is
doing through us is eliminated. A saint is never consciously a saint;
a saint is consciously dependent on God.

LOVE AND TRUST

Ephesians 6:23-24

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+6:23-24

Dear Father,

May your peace-in-the-midst-of-war be with all my brothers and
sisters throughout the world. May you and the Lord Jesus fill them
with love and with full and effective trust in you. May your
unfailing favor be with all who love our Lord Jesus with an undying
love.

Father, I do love the Lord Jesus with unfailing love. Let me never
outlive it.

In the name of Jesus and by his authority I ask for victory
against everything that stands in opposition to your will, our
eternal good. Amen.

WJD! -- The Owner's Story -- Luke 20:9-13

The Owner's Story

Then Jesus told the people this story: "A man planted a
vineyard. The man leased the land to some farmers. Then he
went away for a long time. Later, it was time for the grapes
to be picked. So the man sent a servant to those farmers so
that they would give him his share of the grapes. But the
farmers beat the servant and sent him away with nothing. So
the man sent another servant. The farmers beat this servant
too. They showed no respect for him. The farmers sent the
servant away with nothing. So the man sent a third servant to
the farmers. The farmers hurt this servant badly and threw
him out. The owner of the vineyard said, 'What will I do now?
I will send my son. I love my son very much. Maybe the
farmers will respect my son!'"

-- Luke 20:9-13 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
This parable is very autobiographical for Jesus. He is clearly
referring to what God has done. Religious leaders had taken over the
running of God's people. However, they wanted to run it their own way
and resisted God's desires and true representatives to the point of
abusing and killing them. So God would send someone who is more than
just an owner's representative; he would send his cherished son! Jesus
is that cherished Son! What unfolds in the events that follow happened
to God's beloved Son! It doesn't just matter historically; it also
matters significantly in the life and heart of God. In other words, God
loves enough to send his cherished Son to save us!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, thank you for your indescribable gift. In Jesus' name. Amen.
