Today's Verse : Proverbs 18:24

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 20, 2009

VERSE:
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend
who sticks closer than a brother.
-- Proverbs 18:24
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Proverbs+18:24

THOUGHT:
Close spiritual friends -- the kind that can hold us accountable
when we need it, build us up when we're down, or celebrate with us
when we've enjoyed success -- are truly rare. So many people are
lonely; they're lonely for something, or better yet, someone,
they've never experienced. We have a tendency in modern western
culture to have acquaintances and companions instead of friends and
partners. When things go poorly, when we have nothing to offer to
them, acquaintances can run away in times of trouble or fade away
if things are long and protracted. There are, however, true friends
whose commitment and dedication are deeper than even physical
family. How do I know? God promised it! I've seen it! My family has
been blessed by it! So let's hear the call to be that kind of
friend to others and in so doing, we will often find that kind of
friend for ourselves.

PRAYER:
Gracious and holy Father, thank you so much for calling me into
your family. Please bless me as I seek to enter into meaningful
friendships with those in your family. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: One Thing I Want to be Known For

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
One Thing I Want to be Known For
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
For I live in eager expectation and hope that I will never do anything that causes me shame, but that I will always be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past, and that my life will always honor Christ, whether I live or I die. Philippians 1:20 NLT

Paul was not saying that he had never done anything wrong, or that nothing in his past could cause him shame. He was admitting that he was a "new creation" and that his heart's desire now was to please God, and to consistently live a life in which God would be proud. I have to admit....I share Paul's desire!

I'm not going to sugar-coat it. We are living in difficult days. It is not easy anymore to live the Christian life. It is no longer the norm to do the right thing. There appears at times to be no moral compass for America. The Bible is no longer respected as it once was, and prayer has been far removed from our schools. The idea of teaching children right from wrong is watered down depending on what an individual's opinion of right and wrong is. Tolerance is the new buzz word for our current culture.

One thing I know for sure, as long as there is time left on this earth, I want to be known as one who loves the Lord with all my heart and soul. I don't want to do anything that would shame me in front of my Father. I want to proclaim the good news into the streets of our world.

I want people to know that I am a Christian. I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of salvation. Whether I live or die, I want my life to honor my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Is that your heart's desire?

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Love Path 911: What is Biblically Appropriate?, by Joe Beam

Special Note:
Each week, Joe Beam is answering questions submitted by Heartlight.org
subscribers based on his counseling experience, academic research, and
heart for people as a minister. You can submit your questions to
ask@joebeam.com.

Question:

According to the Word of God, what are the "can and cannot do's"
when it comes to a sexual relationship in a marriage? (In other
words, is foreplay and intimately touching other parts of your
spouse's body allowed) -- J.P.

Twice on NBC's Today Show, I've been asked similar questions. It seems
that a great number of people, Christian or not, want to know what the
Bible says is okay in sexual practice. Before I summarize the "can,"
let's quickly examine the "cannot."

The Bible forbids:

* Incest -- sexual contact with certain relatives (Leviticus 18:7-17;
Leviticus 20:11-19)

* Homosexuality -- sexual contact with your same gender (Leviticus
18:22; Leviticus 20:1; Romans 1:24-28)

* Rape -- forcing sexual contact on another (Deuteronomy 22:23-29)

* Consensual sex outside of marriage(Exodus 22:16-17)

* Adultery -- breaking of the marital contract, especially by having
sex with someone other than mate (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy
22:22; Hebrews 13:4)

* Lust -- craving sexual contact with someone other than spouse (Exodus
20:17; Matthew 5:27-28)

* Prostitution -- selling or trading sexual activities (Deuteronomy
23:17-18; 1 Corinthians 6:15)

* Bestiality -- sexual contact with an animal (Leviticus 20:15-16)

* Menstrual sex -- sexual intercourse while the women is in menses (Leviticus
15:24, Leviticus 18:19, Leviticus 20:18) [Many believe this may be
specific to Old Testament and not applicable today.]

The loving union between a husband and wife!

* Harm -- anything that does harm to the body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

My summary of the above pulls everything into three categories for
people of God:

* We may not have sex -- in reality or fantasy -- with any person
other than our spouses.

* Bestiality must never occur.

* Nothing should be done that causes harm to either person.

Other than that, I see no Biblical prohibitions. In my understanding of
the Bible, anything that does not violate any of the above three
principles is quite okay for a married couple. Additionally, there are
passages in the Song of Solomon that demonstrate that loving union
between husband and wife can involve various activities addressing
various parts of the body. As to one of the specifics you mention in
your question, in Song of Solomon 4:16, it appears that Solomon's wife
requested this. If you wish to know more, or have a deeper explanation,
please write me at ask@JoeBeam.com.

If you have trouble with the sex life in your marriage, we may be able

Word.

Morning & Evening -- Ezekiel 36:37 and John 1:41

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, February 19, 2009

MORNING:

"Thus saith the Lord God; I will yet for this be enquired of
by the house of Israel, to do it for them."
-- Ezekiel 36:37

Prayer is the forerunner of mercy. Turn to sacred history, and you will
find that scarcely ever did a great mercy come to this world unheralded
by supplication. You have found this true in your own personal
experience. God has given you many an unsolicited favour, but still
great prayer has always been the prelude of great mercy with you. When
you first found peace through the blood of the cross, you had been
praying much, and earnestly interceding with God that he would remove
your doubts, and deliver you from your distresses. Your assurance was
the result of prayer. When at any time you have had high and rapturous
joys, you have been obliged to look upon them as answers to your
prayers. When you have had great deliverances out of sore troubles, and
mighty helps in great dangers, you have been able to say, "I sought the
Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." Prayer is
always the preface to blessing. It goes before the blessing as the
blessing's shadow. When the sunlight of God's mercies rises upon our
necessities, it casts the shadow of prayer far down upon the plain. Or,
to use another illustration, when God piles up a hill of mercies, he
himself shines behind them, and he casts on our spirits the shadow of
prayer, so that we may rest certain, if we are much in prayer, our
pleadings are the shadows of mercy. Prayer is thus connected with the
blessing to show us the value of it. If we had the blessings without
asking for them, we should think them common things; but prayer makes
our mercies more precious than diamonds. The things we ask for are
precious, but we do not realize their preciousness until we have sought
for them earnestly.

"Prayer makes the darken'd cloud withdraw;
Prayer climbs the ladder Jacob saw;
Gives exercise to faith and love;
Brings every blessing from above."

EVENING:

"He first findeth his own brother Simon."
-- John 1:41

This case is an excellent pattern of all cases where spiritual life is
vigorous. As soon as a man has found Christ, he begins to find others.
I will not believe that thou hast tasted of the honey of the gospel if
thou canst eat it all thyself. True grace puts an end to all spiritual
monopoly. Andrew first found his own brother Simon, and then others.
Relationship has a very strong demand upon our first individual
efforts. Andrew, thou didst well to begin with Simon. I doubt whether
there are not some Christians giving away tracts at other people's
houses who would do well to give away a tract at their own-whether
there are not some engaged in works of usefulness abroad who are
neglecting their special sphere of usefulness at home. Thou mayst or
thou mayst not be called to evangelize the people in any particular
locality, but certainly thou art called to see after thine own
servants, thine own kinsfolk and acquaintance. Let thy religion begin
at home. Many tradesmen export their best commodities-the Christian
should not. He should have all his conversation everywhere of the best
savour; but let him have a care to put forth the sweetest fruit of
spiritual life and testimony in his own family. When Andrew went to
find his brother, he little imagined how eminent Simon would become.
Simon Peter was worth ten Andrews so far as we can gather from sacred
history, and yet Andrew was instrumental in bringing him to Jesus. You
may be very deficient in talent yourself, and yet you may be the means
of drawing to Christ one who shall become eminent in grace and service.
Ah! dear friend, you little know the possibilities which are in you.
You may but speak a word to a child, and in that child there may be
slumbering a noble heart which shall stir the Christian church in years
to come. Andrew has only two talents, but he finds Peter. Go thou and
do likewise.

Isaiah 60:1
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+60:1&sr=1

We have to take the first step as though there were no God. It is no
use to wait for God to help us, He will not; but immediately we arise
we find He is there. Whenever God inspires, the initiative is a moral
one. We must do the thing and not lie like a log. If we will arise
and shine, drudgery becomes divinely transfigured.

Drudgery is one of the finest touchstones of character there is.
Drudgery is work that is very far removed from anything to do with
the ideal - the utterly mean grubby things; and when we come in
contact with them we know instantly whether or not we are spiritually
real. Read John 13. We see there the Incarnate God doing the most
desperate piece of drudgery, washing fishermen's feet, and He says -
"If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, ye also
ought to wash one another's feet." It requires the inspiration of God
to go through drudgery with the light of God upon it. Some people do
a certain thing and the way in which they do it hallows that thing
for ever afterwards. It may be the most commonplace thing, but after
we have seen them do it, it becomes different. When the Lord does a
thing through us, He always transfigures it. Our Lord took on Him our
human flesh and transfigured it, and it has become for every saint
the temple of the Holy Ghost.

Praying with Paul : "Value of Interdependence"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

VALUE OF INTERDEPENDENCE

Romans 12:3-8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+12:3-8

Dear Father, who wills our interdependence,

Having gifts that differ, let us use them appropriately according
to your will.

If prophesy, in proportion to one's faith. If service, diligently
serving. If teaching, instructively teaching. If exhortation,
strongly motivating encouragement. If giving, with liberal and
generous contributions. If giving aid, with zeal. If acts of
mercy, with cheerfulness.

Great Giver, give your gifts to your people through your people.
But let us always give you the glory! Praise to you, our Lord.

It is in the name of Jesus, who shares all spiritual blessings
with us, we ask for a growing love among all your people. Amen.

WJD! -- Warned! -- Matthew 5:19

Warned!

"A person should obey every command, even a command that does
not seem important. If a person refuses to obey any command
and teaches other people not to obey that command, then that
person will be the least important in the kingdom of heaven.
But the person that obeys the law and teaches other people to
obey the law will be great in the kingdom of heaven."

-- Matthew 5:19 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus did not come to abolish the Law. His disciples cannot set aside
the Law simply because they don't like it or it is inconvenient. Jesus
is trying to help them to a greater righteousness and holiness. While
this can be received only by grace, Jesus emphasizes grace must not
mean rewriting God's will for character and holiness so the standards
are lower. This is especially true of those who teach others about
God's will. The last thing we want to do is promise an easy Gospel with
no demand when God has set the character, faith, ministry, life, and
service of Jesus as our standard. We do not want to make the way for
others more difficult to follow, nor do we want to be the source of
their drifting off the path either. In sharing the Gospel, we want to
share the truth: God's will, revealed through his Word by the Holy
Spirit.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father of all truth, I come to you now wanting to know your will and
wanting even more to put it into practice. Please help me discern what
your truth is and then live it each day in my life. I want to obey all
your will and not just the parts that are easy to fulfill. May I wholly
live in your love and care. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
