Magnifying Christ (3)

Magnifying Christ (3)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bible Verses ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Phil. 1:20 According to my earnest expectation and hope that
in nothing I will be put to shame, but with all boldness, as
always, even now Christ will be magnified in my body, whether
through life or through death.
4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Words of Ministry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

(Part 3 of 3)
At the time Paul wrote the book of Philippians, he was an
elderly person. No doubt, the guards expected him to be
exhausted by his imprisonment. But far from being exhausted,
Paul was full of joy and rejoicing in the Lord. I am
confident that he was shining forth Christ and expressing
Him. Such an expression was a declaration of the unlimited
greatness of Christ and a declaration that Christ is
inexhaustible.

Our love is eventually exhausted, but Christ as love is
inexhaustible. Likewise, our natural patience is limited, but
Christ as our patience is without limit. We all have the
capacity to be patient, but only to a certain extent. Then we
become provoked and angry. For example, a brother may
exercise patience with his wife. Eventually, however, this
patience reaches its limit, and he becomes angry with her.
Although our natural patience is so limited, Christ as
patience is inexhaustible and immeasurable.

Even though Paul must have been mistreated in prison, he
could be happy and display to the guards the unlimited
greatness of Christ. In particular, Paul displayed Christ's
inexhaustible patience. Christ certainly was magnified in
Paul's physical body. Day by day, Paul was happy in the Lord.
His happiness did not diminish as time went by. In his
happiness he could show forth the immeasurable Christ he
experienced and enjoyed. By this way Paul expressed,
exhibited, exalted, and extolled Christ. I do not believe
that Paul was offended by the jailers or that he offended
them. Rather, he was a living witness of Christ, testifying
of His ability, power, patience, love, and wisdom, all
without measure. The guards may have considered Paul to be
strange or peculiar, viewing him as possessing something
which they did not have. What they sensed in Paul was Christ
magnified. While he was in prison, Paul expressed the
greatness of Christ in an enlarged way. He magnified Christ
with all boldness both through life and through death. By
magnifying Christ in this way, Paul could overcome any
situation.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Wake Up Call, by Russ Lawson

My wife and I occasionally stay in hotels when we travel. It's not
unusual for us to arrange for the hotel to give us what is called "A
wake up call" -- that is a call to make sure we are awake and ready to
start our day on time.

In the USA we also use the term "Walk up Call" to describe life
changing or challenging events. The problem is that sometimes we want
to turn over, cover up our heads and go back to sleep and forget the
"wake up call"!

Notice what happened in this "wake up call"!

It happened in 1883, in New England the Sun didn't rise! The people
awoke to an eerie darkness. They went outside to do their chores in
stony silence. No rooster crowed, no birds chirping, none of the
usual sounds of a new day. At the very start, people began to
gather in small groups to question what was happening, to wonder
and discuss what was taking place. Slowly, people began to make
their way to the Churches. They say that by twelve noon every
Church in New England was filled to overflowing with people on
their knees crying out to God. There were cries for mercy, people
begging for forgiveness and others confessing their sins. They say
that there were few people who didn't pray the day the sun didn't
rise. The Churches were full late into the night.

As the next morning neared, great crowds began to gather on the
hilltops and the high places near their homes and churches. People
were staring toward the eastern horizon. Every eye was fixed on
that point where the sky touched the land. Every eye watching,
hoping to catch a glimmer of the first rays of the Sun. As the sun
began to come up over the horizon, people began to shout and yell
praise to God, they clapped, danced and rejoiced because the Sun
shined on the land again. As if in one voice, they began to praise
the Lord for the sunlight, the warmth and the joy of God's new day.

This is understandable. So here is the rest of the story:

These people had no idea that on the Island nation of Indonesia,
the sleeping giant of a volcano, Krakatoa, had come to life. They
had no idea that this great mountain exploded and sent a huge cloud
of dust and ash into the upper atmosphere. This black cloud would
be carried around the world by the jet stream. It was said to cover
whole regions, covering the sky from horizon to horizon. Few people
had any idea that a volcano, half way around the world, could
create such a cloud that could block out the Sun. Yet for most of
those people that was the very first time they ever thanked God for
the warmth and wonder of the Sun.*

We must not forget the lessons learned!

But people are people, and like most of us, they soon forgot. They
forgot the day they thought Jesus was coming back. They forgot the
prayers, pleading and repentance. They forgot the thanksgiving they had
offered to God. They went back to their old life styles, their old
habits, and forgot all of the promises they had made to God.

Another "wake up call" happened for many of us on September 11, 2001! A
great disaster took place in New York. Terrorists killed thousands of
people from all different races and nations. People began to realize
just how quickly life could end and to think about how important God
should be in their lives. Some repented of their sinful ways. Some made
promises to do better and to serve God. We became a people who were
thankful for each new day and for each time we got to see our friends,
family, wives, husbands and children. We became more aware of God's
blessings on us. We were more thankful to God for our lives than
perhaps we had been for a long time. Why? Because we had no idea that
one man with an insane dream could hurt us or our nation, our people,
our friends and families so much. But then the clouds of smoke cleared,
and we began to feel secure once again, and we began to forget.

How many wake up calls do we get? What "wake up call" have you received
in your life? Did you really "wake up," or soon forget your prayers and
promises? You may not get another call to wake up, a second chance!

Let me leave you with three verses to ponder:

Another reason for right living is that you know how late it is;
time is running out. Wake up, for the coming of our salvation is
nearer now than when we first believed (Romans 13:11 NLT). Wake up
from your drunken stupor ... and do not go on sinning. For some
have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame (1 Corinthians
15:34 ESV). For the light makes everything visible. This is why it
is said, "Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead and Christ will
give you light! (Ephesians 5:14 NLT)

May we listen to our "wake up call" and not forget the lessons learned!

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 138:5 and 2 Samuel 1:26

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, February 1, 2009

MORNING:

"They shall sing in the ways of the Lord."
-- Psalms 138:5

The time when Christians begin to sing in the ways of the Lord is when
they first lose their burden at the foot of the Cross. Not even the
songs of the angels seem so sweet as the first song of rapture which
gushes from the inmost soul of the forgiven child of God. You know how
John Bunyan describes it. He says when poor Pilgrim lost his burden at
the Cross, he gave three great leaps, and went on his way singing-

"Blest Cross! blest Sepulchre! blest rather be
The Man that there was put to shame for me!"

Believer, do you recollect the day when your fetters fell off? Do you
remember the place when Jesus met you, and said, "I have loved thee
with an everlasting love; I have blotted out as a cloud thy
transgressions, and as a thick cloud thy sins; they shall not be
mentioned against thee any more for ever." Oh! what a sweet season is
that when Jesus takes away the pain of sin. When the Lord first
pardoned my sin, I was so joyous that I could scarce refrain from
dancing. I thought on my road home from the house where I had been set
at liberty, that I must tell the stones in the street the story of my
deliverance. So full was my soul of joy, that I wanted to tell every
snow-flake that was falling from heaven of the wondrous love of Jesus,
who had blotted out the sins of one of the chief of rebels. But it is
not only at the commencement of the Christian life that believers have
reason for song; as long as they live they discover cause to sing in
the ways of the Lord, and their experience of his constant
lovingkindness leads them to say, "I will bless the Lord at all times:
his praise shall continually be in my mouth." See to it, brother, that
thou magnifiest the Lord this day.

"Long as we tread this desert land,
New mercies shall new songs demand."

EVENING:

"Thy love to me was wonderful."
-- 2 Samuel 1:26

Come, dear readers, let each one of us speak for himself of the
wonderful love, not of Jonathan, but of Jesus. We will not relate what
we have been told, but the things which we have tasted and handled-of
the love of Christ. Thy love to me, O Jesus, was wonderful when I was a
stranger wandering far from thee, fulfilling the desires of the flesh
and of the mind. Thy love restrained me from committing the sin which
is unto death, and withheld me from self-destruction. Thy love held
back the axe when Justice said, "Cut it down! why cumbereth it the
ground?" Thy love drew me into the wilderness, stripped me there, and
made me feel the guilt of my sin, and the burden of mine iniquity. Thy
love spake thus comfortably to me when, I was sore dismayed-"Come unto
me, and I will give thee rest." Oh, how matchless thy love when, in a
moment, thou didst wash my sins away, and make my polluted soul, which
was crimson with the blood of my nativity, and black with the grime of
my transgressions, to be white as the driven snow, and pure as the
finest wool. How thou didst commend thy love when thou didst whisper in
my ears, "I am thine and thou art mine." Kind were those accents when
thou saidst, "The Father himself loveth you." And sweet the moments,
passing sweet, when thou declaredst to me "the love of the Spirit."
Never shall my soul forget those chambers of fellowship where thou has
unveiled thyself to me. Had Moses his cleft in the rock, where he saw
the train, the back parts of his God? We, too, have had our clefts in
the rock, where we have seen the full splendours of the Godhead in the
person of Christ. Did David remember the tracks of the wild goat, the
land of Jordan and the Hermonites? We, too, can remember spots to
memory dear, equal to these in blessedness. Precious Lord Jesus, give
us a fresh draught of thy wondrous love to begin the month with. Amen.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Call Of God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 1, 2009

THE CALL OF GOD

For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the
gospel.

1 Corinthians 1:17
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1co+1:17&sr=1

Paul states here that the call of God is to preach the gospel; but
remember what Paul means by "the gospel," viz., the reality of
Redemption in our Lord Jesus Christ. We are apt to make
sanctification the end-all of our preaching. Paul alludes to personal
experience by way of illustration, never as the end of the matter. We
are nowhere commissioned to preach salvation or sanctification; we
are commissioned to lift up Jesus Christ (John 12:32). It is a
travesty to say that Jesus Christ travailed in Redemption to make me
a saint. Jesus Christ travailed in Redemption to redeem the whole
world, and place it unimpaired and rehabilitated before the throne of
God. The fact that Redemption can be experienced by us is an
illustration of the power of the reality of Redemption, but that is
not the end of Redemption. If God were human, how sick to the heart
and weary He would be of the constant requests we make for our
salvation, for our sanctification. We tax His energies from morning
till night for things for ourselves - some thing for me to be
delivered from! When we touch the bedrock of the reality of the
Gospel of God, we shall never bother God any further with little
personal plaints.

The one passion of Paul's life was to proclaim the Gospel of God. He
welcomed heart-breaks, disillusionments, tribulation, for one reason
only, because these things kept him in unmoved devotion to the Gospel
of God.

Praying with Paul : "The Coming Glory"

THE COMING GLORY

Romans 8:15
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:15

Dear Father, creator and re-creator of the world,

Whatever I may have to suffer is nothing compared to the glory you
will reveal in your people, and therefore in me.

Your creation waits in eager longing for that better day in which
we, your children, shall be revealed in glory. Your glory will be
shared with us, and ours with it!

Inwardly, Father, I groan while bearing the frustrations of life
and the weakness and pains in my body. I long for the time when the
adoption process is complete, when my body will be resurrected and
redeemed from all this.

This is the hope of my salvation. Thank you, dear Lord, for that
hope.

In the name of Jesus and with the support of your Spirit I come to
you, anticipating your glory. Amen.

WJD! -- The Kingdom Calls -- Matthew 4:17-20

The Kingdom Calls

From that time Jesus began to tell people what God wanted.
This is what he said: "Change your hearts and lives, because
the kingdom of heaven is coming soon." Jesus was walking by
Lake Galilee. He saw two brothers, Simon (called Peter) and
Simon's brother Andrew. The two brothers were fishermen and
they were fishing in the lake with a net. Jesus said, "Come
follow me. I will make you a different kind of fishermen. You
will work to gather people, not fish." Simon and Andrew left
their nets and followed Jesus.

-- Matthew 4:17-20 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
We have a tendency to think of kingdoms in terms of property or
geography. For Jesus, the Kingdom of God (or "Kingdom of Heaven" as
Matthew often puts it) is not about property or geography. Jesus taught
that the Kingdom was about submission to his reign in his disciples'
hearts and lives. His goal for them was to be like him in character and
obedience. They had to be ready to surrender to him anything that might
get in the way of his leadership in their lives. This kind of kingdom
requires conquest, but not a conquest of nations or territory. Instead,
it is the conquest of hearts. Peter and Andrew left all to follow him.
They wanted Jesus to rule their hearts. For us, there are still some
fundamental questions regarding the Kingdom and following Christ: "What
do I find most difficult to surrender to the Lordship of Christ? Where
do I start? What is that one thing that is most difficult?" I must let
him have rule over that one area -- and ultimately over every area. If
I will do this, he may very well give it back to me to use, only now it
will be for him, through us, by his power.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Lord God, I want Jesus to be Lord of my life. I want to follow him
and honor him in every way. Please gently show me the areas of my life
that I have not surrendered to his Lordship. I want you and your
Kingdom to be the consuming passion of my life. I want to live for you
so that I may be used by you to bless others. In the name of the Lord
Jesus I pray. Amen.
