Mustard Seed Thoughts: The Greatest Decision

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
The Greatest Decision
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Furthermore, tell the people. This is what the Lord says: See, I am setting before you the way of life and the way of death. Jeremiah 21:8 NIV

The choice is really made pretty clear. There are two roads in life. One leads to life and one leads to death. Which will you choose?

We make so many choices in life, from little decisions like what clothes to put on each day and what kind of car to drive, to major choices like whether to get married and have kids. Life is full of different ideas. The decisions we make can alter our future dramatically sometimes.

Do you ever reflect back on your life? Do you ever wonder how your life would have changed if you had made a different choice than the one you did? What if you had gone to a different college? Or decided to wait on marriage a while? Or pursued a different career?

If we spend very long thinking about it, we begin to see how different our life could have been. Thankfully, God al lows individualism and He can work His sovereign will through the decisions we make in life. The career choice you made surely can affect you for the next thirty years or more, and the decision whether or not to have children will alter all your adult life.

But what about your eternity? Have you considered how long your forever can be altered by the decision you make?

Dear friend, there is no greater decision in life than the one about your eternity. God has made the choice clear. One road leads to life, the other to death. If you have never personally accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, the only way in which you can enter Heaven, then please, today is the day! Right now, in the presence of an Almighty God, pray this prayer:

Dear God, I know you love me. I know I am a sinner. I know Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose from the grave in glory. I accept Jesus as my personal Savior, the only way I can get to Heaven. Come into my heart, Lord, and save me. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus name, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer today or in days past, you have made the perfect choice. You have chosen the road that leads to life! Congratulations, you're on the winning side!

The angels are rejoicing now! And so am I!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Beyond the Mirror, by Phil Ware

When you look in the mirror, what do you see?

Ouch! What I see is the 10-20-30 syndrome: a guy who is 10 years older
than I imagined myself to be, 20 lbs. heavier than I thought myself to
be, and I have 30 fewer hair follicles than I had last week.

Most of us find what we lack, what we are not. We're trained to see our
blemishes, flaws, and imperfections. We're sensitive to our sags, bags,
and wrinkles. Advertisers, social pressures, and our own vanity make us
vulnerable to all sorts of products and sales pitches. We're too much,
too little, or not enough like whatever mythical standard we have set
for ourselves.

On an even more serious note, we feel much the same spiritually. We
focus on what we are not or what we have done or what we neglected to
do. We forget we are people that God shaped with care, intention, and
purpose from the moment of conception (Psalm 139:13-16). We lose sight
of the truth that God is at work in us (Philippians 2:13). We discount
the power of being God's special new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), the
Father's artistic handiwork made to do something great for the Kingdom
(Ephesians 2:10).

How do we keep from glaring at what we are not in the mirror? How do we
keep our spiritual failures and shortcomings from swamping our
confidence in Christ? How do we settle ourselves in the great will of
God and find our space to live, thrive, and bring our Savior glory?

Jesus gave us two guiding principles and then gave us ways to hang on
to these two principles in our lives.

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got
together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this
question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and
greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your
neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these
two commandments"

(Matthew 22:34-40 TNIV).

Then Jesus taught us to pray in a way that connected these two great
principles into our daily routines:

[Jesus said] This, then, is how you should pray:

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

(Matthew 6:9-12).

Jesus teaches us to look beyond the person we see in the mirror. He
calls on us to pray a simple prayer each day that awakens our hearts to
our dependence upon and love for the incredible God of the universe. He
reminds us, however, that to honor God, we must be redemptively
involved in the lives of others. In other words, we must love God with
all that we are and live with our Father's character and compassion in
relationship to others.

Jesus teaches us to look beyond the person we see in the mirror.

Now it is so easy for us to reduce the life of Jesus to slogans and
formulas that sound clever and catchy. But, if we listen closely, we
hear these two themes over and over. From Jesus' teaching in the Sermon
on the Mount, notice these two:

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well (Matthew 6:33). So in
everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for
this sums up the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 7:12).

The apostle Paul takes up both of these two principles when he writes:
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who
love him [loving God], who have been called according to his purpose"
[sharing God's love with others] (Romans 8:28).

Then a little later in the same letter, he wrote:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's
mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
pleasing to God -- this is true worship. Do not conform to the
pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is
-- his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:1-2).

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be
devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves
(Romans 12:9-10).

Everything around us is going to scream for us to define ourselves by
externals -- by the flaws we see of ourselves in the mirror. The truth
is, however, that image is always going to disappoint us unless we have
our identities established in the two guiding truths of God: our love
for God and our love for His children.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

After studying the following make LIFE Group and discussion questions,
I'd love to get some of your responses on my blog
(http://www.thephilfiles.com).

* Compare the pigment of each person's skin in your group -- this is
politically incorrect because we are afraid to talk about race and
ethnicity; but as believers, we celebrate it! The more diversity in
your group, the better. It's also a reminder that it really isn't a
white or black or brown race, but we are "different shades of God's
creative grace" (Galatians 3:26-4:4; Psalm 139:13-16).

If there are not many shades in your group, why not?
If there are, what do you think that is saying about your
group?
Why is it so hard for us to talk about this subject in today's
world?
Why don't we celebrate diversity more?
Why did God place you in the situation (skin color, family of
origin, family of raising, church family, experiences) that he
did?
If we understand that God made us and gave us the experiences
in our lives to have us be a blessing to others (Genesis 12:1-3;
1 Peter 13:9; Romans 8:28-29), how does that change how you
view yourself?

* Several passages in Scripture remind us of the importance of both
celebrating the "skin" we're born in and also challenging us to
move beyond the limitations of our own "unique shade of God's
creative grace." What do you think these passages teach us about
how to both use our skin and our need to move beyond our skin?

John 1:14-18 (cf. John 3:16-17; John 20:21-22)
Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:38-39
Revelation 7:9-11

* How do all these passages help us speak to the nature of our real
family and ethnicity and what does this say about our purpose?

Now answer that question again after reading 1 Peter 2:9-10 &
Galatians 3:26-29

Morning & Evening -- John 18:8 and Mark 8:38

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, March 26, 2009

MORNING:

"Jesus said unto them, If ye seek me, let these go their way."
-- John 18:8

Mark, my soul, the care which Jesus manifested even in his hour of
trial, towards the sheep of his hand! The ruling passion is strong in
death. He resigns himself to the enemy, but he interposes a word of
power to set his disciples free. As to himself, like a sheep before her
shearers he is dumb and opened not his mouth, but for his disciples'
sake he speaks with almighty energy. Herein is love, constant,
self-forgetting, faithful love. But is there not far more here than is
to be found upon the surface? Have we not the very soul and spirit of
the atonement in these words? The Good Shepherd lays down his life for
the sheep, and pleads that they must therefore go free. The Surety is
bound, and justice demands that those for whom he stands a substitute
should go their way. In the midst of Egypt's bondage, that voice rings
as a word of power, "Let these go their way." Out of slavery of sin and
Satan the redeemed must come. In every cell of the dungeons of Despair,
the sound is echoed, "Let these go their way," and forth come
Despondency and Much-afraid. Satan hears the well-known voice, and
lifts his foot from the neck of the fallen; and Death hears it, and the
grave opens her gates to let the dead arise. Their way is one of
progress, holiness, triumph, glory, and none shall dare to stay them in
it. No lion shall be on their way, neither shall any ravenous beast go
up thereon. "The hind of the morning" has drawn the cruel hunters upon
himself, and now the most timid roes and hinds of the field may graze
at perfect peace among the lilies of his loves. The thunder-cloud has
burst over the Cross of Calvary, and the pilgrims of Zion shall never
be smitten by the bolts of vengeance. Come, my heart, rejoice in the
immunity which thy Redeemer has secured thee, and bless his name all
the day, and every day.

EVENING:

"When he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy
angels."
-- Mark 8:38

If we have been partakers with Jesus in his shame, we shall be sharers
with him in the lustre which shall surround him when he appears again
in glory. Art thou, beloved one, with Christ Jesus? Does a vital union
knit thee to him? Then thou art to-day with him in his shame; thou hast
taken up his cross, and gone with him without the camp bearing his
reproach; thou shalt doubtless be with him when the cross is exchanged
for the crown. But judge thyself this evening; for if thou art not with
him in the regeneration, neither shalt thou be with him when he shall
come in his glory. If thou start back from the black side of communion,
thou shalt not understand its bright, its happy period, when the King
shall come, and all his holy angels with him. What! are angels with
him? And yet he took not up angels-he took up the seed of Abraham. Are
the holy angels with him? Come, my soul, if thou art indeed his own
beloved, thou canst not be far from him. If his friends and his
neighbours are called together to see his glory, what thinkest thou if
thou art married to him? Shalt thou be distant? Though it be a day of
judgment, yet thou canst not be far from that heart which, having
admitted angels into intimacy, has admitted thee into union. Has he not
said to thee, O my soul, "I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness,
and in judgment, and in lovingkindness?" Have not his own lips said it,
"I am married unto thee, and my delight is in thee?" If the angels, who
are but friends and neighbours, shall be with him, it is abundantly
certain that his own beloved Hephzibah, in whom is all his delight,
shall be near to him, and sit at his right hand. Here is a morning star
of hope for thee, of such exceeding brilliance, that it may well light
up the darkest and most desolate experience.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Vision By Personal Purity"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 26, 2009

VISION BY PERSONAL PURITY

Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.

Matthew 5:8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+5:8&sr=1

Purity is not innocence, it is much more. Purity is the outcome of
sustained spiritual sympathy with God. We have to grow in purity. The
life with God may be right and the inner purity remain unsullied, and
yet every now and again the bloom on the outside may be sullied. God
does not shield us from this possibility, because in this way we
realize the necessity of maintaining the vision by personal purity.
If the spiritual bloom of our life with God is getting impaired in
the tiniest degree, we must leave off everything and get it put
right. Remember that vision depends on character - the pure in heart
see God.

God makes us pure by His sovereign grace, but we have something to
look after, this bodily life by which we come in contact with other
people and with other points of view, it is these that are apt to
sully. Not only must the inner sanctuary be kept right with God, but
the outer courts as well are to be brought into perfect accord with
the purity God gives us by His grace. The spiritual understanding is
blurred immediately the outer court is sullied. If we are going to
retain personal contact with the Lord Jesus Christ, it will mean
there are some things we must scorn to do or to think, some
legitimate things we must scorn to touch.

A practical way of keeping personal purity unsullied in relation to
other people is to say to yourself - That man, that woman, perfect in
Christ Jesus! That friend, that relative, perfect in Christ Jesus!

Praying with Paul : "The Measure of Greatness"

THE MEASURE OF GREATNESS

1 Corinthians 3:21-23
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+3:21-23

Dear Father, kind and generous God,

Let us look for the imitation of Jesus in the lives of others, for
you have made this the measure of greatness. And even if we should
find it, let us give the glory to you, to whom it truly belongs!
For you are worthy!

Thank you that you don't pay us what you owe, but give us
everything freely! For all things are ours through your
grace-whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world, or life or
death, or things present or things future - everything is ours! And
we are Christ's, and Christ is yours!

Through him and you, we are wise, rich, beautiful and powerful,
and have the promise of living happily forevermore! How wonderful!

Thank you, Father. You are so generous and kind!

In the blessed name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- The Golden Life -- Matthew 7:12

The Golden Life

"Do to other people the same things you want them to do to
you. This is the meaning of the law {of Moses} and the
{teaching of the} prophets."

-- Matthew 7:12 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The Golden Rule! That's what it's called, but Jesus isn't as concerned
that we know the "rule" as much as he is that we live the "golden
life." In many ways, this concept of doing for others what we would
want done for us summarizes Jesus' teaching to his disciples about how
to live for others. It also captures the spirit of the Old Testament
Law and the teaching of the prophets. In other words, living to bless
others is God's will for us in all of our relationships. We are not
here to live for ourselves, but to bless others in the name of Jesus.
This kind of life is transformational. God can use it in ways we would
never anticipate to touch the lives of others.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty and enabling God, help me focus less on my needs and my
desires. Instead, dear Father, please help me hear the heart cry of
those around me and then use me to serve them in your name and do for
them what I would want done for me. Through the precious name of the
Lord Jesus I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Romans 8:16-17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 26, 2009

VERSE:
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's
children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs —- heirs of God
and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in
order that we may also share in his glory.
-- Romans 8:16-17
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:16-17

THOUGHT:
Your Brother died and left you the family inheritance! That's
the message here. Because we have God's Spirit, we are God's
children. If we are God's children, then we are heirs of all that
God has to offer us. We are co-heirs with Christ, whose death made
our adoption into God's family possible. So if we have to put up
with some hard times or some painful difficulties, we will not
despair. We know the time is coming when we will inherit all the
blessings of heaven!

PRAYER:
Father, thank you for your grace. I need you to pour out that
grace more and more. Please help me bear up under the weight of my
trials and temptations with character and faithfulness. Please give
me the courage to hang on through the tough times because I know
that I will eventually share heaven with you. Thank you for your
Spirit, my assurance that I am your child and that I will share in
all of your blessings. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
