=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Symbol and Reality, by Bill Sherrill

What is the cross to you? When one speaks of the cross of Jesus, what
images does this call to mind? Humankind uses images to bring our
thoughts into focus. Without images, we would have no language and no
means of storing experiences. In religion, some are concerned that
images might come to be idols, and that is certainly a possibility.
However, awareness that good can become bad if improperly used does not
negate the fact that we cannot function without images -- whether they
are tangible or only visualized mentally.

What does all this have to do with the cross? Everything!

The danger is in failing to see the reality.

The cross is the focal point of our connection to God. If everything we
have in the history of God's dealing with His creation had a connecting
line to one image, ultimately, that image would be the cross (2
Corinthians 1:19-20). From the promises given from the time of the fall
in the Garden of Eden to the teachings of the early church and the
prophecies of the Eternal Kingdom, the cross stands central. It is
God's new rainbow shining brightly to a storm-tossed, fearful and
turbulent world. As the rainbow is a symbol of God's promise of safety
from destruction by another great flood, the cross is His promise of
safety from the ferocious storms of Satan.

The danger is not in the symbol. The danger is in failing to see the
reality which is only represented by the symbol. The sacrificial love
of God in Christ is the reality of the cross. Holding to the symbol in
time of distress will do nothing for our safety, but holding to the
reality will sooth our troubled spirits and heal our sin sick souls.

For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and
Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2 NASB)

But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our
Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to
me, and I to the world (Galatians 6:14).

Morning & Evening -- Colossians 3:4 and Matthew 9:6

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, August 10, 2008

MORNING:

"Christ, who is our life."
-- Colossians 3:4

Paul's marvellously rich expression indicates, that Christ is the
source of our life. "You hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses
and sins." That same voice which brought Lazarus out of the tomb raised
us to newness of life. He is now the substance of our spiritual life.
It is by his life that we live; he is in us, the hope of glory, the
spring of our actions, the central thought which moves every other
thought. Christ is the sustenance of our life. What can the Christian
feed upon but Jesus' flesh and blood? "This is the bread which cometh
down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die." O wayworn
pilgrims in this wilderness of sin, you never get a morsel to satisfy
the hunger of your spirits, except ye find it in him! Christ is the
solace of our life. All our true joys come from him; and in times of
trouble, his presence is our consolation. There is nothing worth living
for but him; and his lovingkindness is better than life! Christ is the
object of our life. As speeds the ship towards the port, so hastes the
believer towards the haven of his Saviour's bosom. As flies the arrow
to its goal, so flies the Christian towards the perfecting of his
fellowship with Christ Jesus. As the soldier fights for his captain,
and is crowned in his captain's victory, so the believer contends for
Christ, and gets his triumph out of the triumphs of his Master. "For
him to live is Christ." Christ is the exemplar of our life. Where there
is the same life within, there will, there must be, to a great extent,
the same developments without; and if we live in near fellowship with
the Lord Jesus we shall grow like him. We shall set him before us as
our Divine copy, and we shall seek to tread in his footsteps, until he
shall become the crown of our life in glory. Oh! how safe, how
honoured, how happy is the Christian, since Christ is our life!

EVENING:

"The Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins."
-- Matthew 9:6

Behold one of the great Physician's mightiest arts: he has power to
forgive sin! While here he lived below, before the ransom had been
paid, before the blood had been literally sprinkled on the mercy-seat,
he had power to forgive sin. Hath he not power to do it now that he
hath died? What power must dwell in him who to the utmost farthing has
faithfully discharged the debts of his people! He has boundless power
now that he has finished transgression and made an end of sin. If ye
doubt it, see him rising from the dead! behold him in ascending
splendour raised to the right hand of God! Hear him pleading before the
eternal Father, pointing to his wounds, urging the merit of his sacred
passion! What power to forgive is here! "He hath ascended on high, and
received gifts for men." "He is exalted on high to give repentance and
remission of sins." The most crimson sins are removed by the crimson of
his blood. At this moment, dear reader, whatever thy sinfulness, Christ
has power to pardon, power to pardon thee, and millions such as thou
art. A word will speak it. He has nothing more to do to win thy pardon;
all the atoning work is done. He can, in answer to thy tears, forgive
thy sins today, and make thee know it. He can breathe into thy soul at
this very moment a peace with God which passeth all understanding,
which shall spring from perfect remission of thy manifold iniquities.
Dost thou believe that? I trust thou believest it. Mayst thou
experience now the power of Jesus to forgive sin! Waste no time in
applying to the Physician of souls, but hasten to him with words like
these:-

"Jesus! Master! hear my cry;
Save me, heal me with a word;
Fainting at thy feet I lie,
Thou my whisper'd plaint hast heard."

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Sacrament Of The Saint"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 10, 2008

THE SACRAMENT OF THE SAINT

Let them that suffer according to the will of God,
commit the keeping of their souls to Him in well-doing.

1 Peter 4:19
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1pe+4:19&sr=1

To choose to suffer means that there is something wrong; to choose
God's Will even if it means suffering is a very different thing. No
healthy saint ever chooses suffering; he chooses God's will, as Jesus
did, whether it means suffering or not. No saint dare interfere with
the discipline of suffering in another saint.

The saint who satisfies the heart of Jesus will make other saints
strong and mature for God. The people who do us good are never those
who sympathize with us, they always hinder, because sympathy
enervates. No one understands a saint but the saint who is nearest to
the Saviour. If we accept the sympathy of a saint, the reflex feeling
is - Well, God is dealing hardly with me. That is why Jesus said
self-pity was of the devil (see Matt. 16:23). Be merciful to God's
reputation. It is easy to blacken God's character because God never
answers back, He never vindicates Himself. Beware of the thought that
Jesus needed sympathy in His earthly life; He refused sympathy from
man because He knew far too wisely that no one on earth understood
what He was after. He took sympathy from His Father only, and from
the angels in heaven. (Cf. Luke 15:10.)

Notice God's unutterable waste of saints, according to the judgment
of the world. God plants His saints in the most useless places. We
say - God intends me to be here because I am so useful. Jesus never
estimated His life along the line of the greatest use. God puts His
saints where they will glorify Him, and we are no judges at all of
where that is.

Praying with Paul : "The Central Mystery"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE CENTRAL MYSTERY

1 Timothy 3:14-16
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Timothy+3:14-16

Dear Father,

Give us a graciousness by which we shall know how to behave
ourselves in your household, the church of the living God, the
pillar and foundation of the truth. Help us so dedicate ourselves
individually to the truth that the church at large will be a
bastion of truth, and will be known by the world to be what it
claims to be.

Keep our focus of truth always on that central mystery of our
religion: That Christ was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in
the Spirit, preached among the nations, believed on in the world,
and taken up in glory!

Nourish us on words of faith and good doctrine. Guide our minds to
stay away from silly and godless myths.

In the name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- Center of the Procession -- Mark 11:9-10

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Center of the Procession

Some of the people were walking ahead of Jesus. Other people
were walking behind him. All the people shouted, "'Praise
Him!' 'Welcome! God bless the One that comes in the name of
the Lord!' God bless the kingdom of our father David. That
kingdom is coming! Praise to God in heaven!"

-- Mark 11:9-10 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
In the center of all of our worship we will find Jesus. He is God who
has come among us to reveal the Father's grace and truth. He is the one
who pours out the Spirit who fills us when we praise. His sacrifice and
victory over death are at the center of our forgiveness and victorious
future. Jesus, Christ our Lord, is the center.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, thank you for your grace lavished on me through your Son.
Thank you for revealing yourself so fully, so intimately, so humanly,
in Jesus. Open my eyes and help me see what I need to do to have your
Son be the center of my life. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : John 8:10-11

August 10, 2008

VERSE:
Jesus straightened up and asked her [the woman caught in
adultery], "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No
one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus
declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
-- John 8:10-11

THOUGHT:
Forgiveness is wonderful if it leads to life change. Jesus came
to call us from sin, into his presence, and for his good pleasure.
He gave us grace but is also gracious enough to not leave us in
sin!

PRAYER:
O LORD my God, holy in all your ways, please transform my heart
and my life into your holy will. Give me the assurance of
forgiveness and the courage to leave my sin behind. In Jesus' name
I ask you for your gracious and unlimited power to mold my heart
and my life into a clearer reflection of you. Amen.

Today's KJV Verse : John 8:10-11

August 10, 2008

VERSE:
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman,
he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no
man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto
her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Amen.
