Today's Verse : Ephesians 2:8-9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 8, 2008

VERSE:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and
this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so
that no one can boast.
-- Ephesians 2:8-9

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+2:8-9

THOUGHT:
As a child, I loved to receive gifts. In such a simple time of
life, a gift meant I was loved. I didn't worry about the
significance or hidden message in a gift. I wasn't concerned about
the "strings attached" to the gift. It was just a gift -- a free
expression of love I didn't deserve, given to me by someone who
truly cared for me. Isn't it great to get to be God's child and
receive his gift and know we can receive it as a child?!

PRAYER:
Thank you, generous Father, for the gift of grace, the gift of
faith, the gift of salvation, and most of all, the gift of Jesus. I
know I can never repay these gifts, but I look forward to saying
"Thank you" through my lifestyle now and I look forward to
continuing to say "Thank you" through all eternity. In Jesus' name
I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Gehazi Four

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Gehazi Four
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left. Then he went in and stood before his master Elisha. "Where have you been, Gehazi?" Elisha asked. "Your servant didn't go anywhere," Gehazi answered. 2 Kings 5:24-25 NIV

Gehazi instantly knew he had done wrong. He took things into his own hands, and it seemed right at the time, but when faced with his sin, he knew he had messed up.

Dont we know when we blow it? Arent there times when you want to trust God, and you know you should trust God, but when the circumstances of life wrap around you, you fall into the trap of doubt? Or, when you repeat that same sin over and over again. Instantly, when you come to grips with yourself, you know you have sinned against God.

In the Old Testament, before the days of grace, men like Gehazi lost big time because of their failure to trust God or because of their disobedience. You and I, because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, are given multiples of chances to get it right. God keeps forgiving us and keeps allowing us to come back under His grace. Gehazi tried to hide his sin from Elisha because he knew he was wrong. What are you involved in today that you would love to hide from God, because you know it to be wrong?

Yes, you are under grace, so you dont have to fear Gods daily wrath as Gehazi did, but dont be fooled. God will not be mocked, and your sins will have consequences. Turn to God and turn quickly! Repent and sin no more! Call on the God who forgives and let Him cleanse you of all unrighteousness.

Call so that you might stand before a Holy God with clean hands and hear those words: Well Done, thy good and faithful servant!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

MAYDAY!, by Lisa Mikitarian

Did you hear about the fourteen-year-old, Laura Montero, whose appendix
burst while she and her family vacationed on a cruise ship off the Baja
Coast? Because the ship was hundreds of miles from help, the crew sent
out a distress call looking for the nearest surgical unit. The USS
Ronald Reagan, which was about 500 miles away, answered the call.
Training exercises for the carrier with a 6000-person capacity came to
a halt. At 2.5 million dollars per each operational day, the ship
steamed 250 miles through the night to get within helicopter transport
range. Laura was airlifted on board and doctors performed the
life-saving surgery.

What a story! The first thing I thought was those are going to be some
hefty medical bills! No, I'm kidding. The first thing I thought was
this: maybe it isn't so difficult to understand, after all, the lengths
Christ went through to save each of us, individually, all by ourselves.
Sorry for the redundancy, but it can be a hard concept to understand --
our individual worth to the God who knows billions of human hearts.

I imagined how Laura felt upon awakening from the operation. Maybe she
experienced astonishment at so many, at such expense, acting to save
her life. Perhaps she felt sheepish: who am I to be the recipient of
such lavish thought and attention and resources? In her position, I
would feel those things. But, looking at it from the outside, what
happened seems natural.

Though the sailors aboard the naval carrier didn't know Laura, I would
venture saying that saving her life gave them a joy which they will
never forget, and will more than likely remain a highlight in their
lives. In fact, the recognition of the value of one life and the
willingness to take Herculean effort to preserve it is what makes this
whole event so noteworthy.

As followers of Jesus, we know the value of a single human being and
it's gratifying to see that concept unfold in "real" life among people
who may or may not be Christian, but nevertheless are created in His
image. Who among us in the Heartlight family, with the ability to help,
would not have answered the distress call to save Laura? Can we
possibly imagine our Lord, who knows us to the hairs on our heads,
would do less for us?

Laura's family was grateful for the speed of the USS Reagan's response
and for everything they did. Her mother told reporters: "It was beyond
words. It was like the whole world just lifted off my shoulders." This
is how many people describe the moment they come to Christ. As for me,
my goal is to redirect astonishment at His graciousness and my
sheepishness at not deserving it, to live with increased thankfulness.

There is a final connection this story brings to me. Our Compassion
Child, Satish, has expressed wonder and thankfulness of our sponsorship
of him. It humbles us. Helping him is relatively simple -- we don't
have to change the course of ships and spend millions. Satish reminds
us of the impact small gestures can make. There are many who reach
across wide waters to answer the distress calls of children in abject
poverty. Who among us with the ability to help, wouldn't answer?

Morning & Evening -- Micah 2:10 and Revelation 11:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, February 7, 2008

MORNING:

"Arise, and depart."
-- Micah 2:10

The hour is approaching when the message will come to us, as it comes
to all-"Arise, and go forth from the home in which thou hast dwelt,
from the city in which thou hast done thy business, from thy family,
from thy friends. Arise, and take thy last journey." And what know we
of the journey? And what know we of the country to which we are bound?
A little we have read thereof, and somewhat has been revealed to us by
the Spirit; but how little do we know of the realms of the future! We
know that there is a black and stormy river called "Death." God bids us
cross it, promising to be with us. And, after death, what cometh? What
wonder-world will open upon our astonished sight? What scene of glory
will be unfolded to our view? No traveller has ever returned to tell.
But we know enough of the heavenly land to make us welcome our summons
thither with joy and gladness. The journey of death may be dark, but we
may go forth on it fearlessly, knowing that God is with us as we walk
through the gloomy valley, and therefore we need fear no evil. We shall
be departing from all we have known and loved here, but we shall be
going to our Father's house-to our Father's home, where Jesus is-to
that royal "city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is
God." This shall be our last removal, to dwell for ever with him we
love, in the midst of his people, in the presence of God. Christian,
meditate much on heaven, it will help thee to press on, and to forget
the toil of the way. This vale of tears is but the pathway to the
better country: this world of woe is but the stepping-stone to a world
of bliss.

"Prepare us, Lord, by grace divine,
For thy bright courts on high;
Then bid our spirits rise, and join
The chorus of the sky."

EVENING:

"And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them,
Come up hither."
-- Revelation 11:12

Without considering these words in their prophetical connection, let us
regard them as the invitation of our great Forerunner to his sanctified
people. In due time there shall be heard "a great voice from heaven" to
every believer, saying, "Come up hither." This should be to the saints
the subject of joyful anticipation. Instead of dreading the time when
we shall leave this world to go unto the Father, we should be panting
for the hour of our emancipation. Our song should be-

"My heart is with him on his throne,
And ill can brook delay;
Each moment listening for the voice,
'Rise up and come away.'"

We are not called down to the grave, but up to the skies. Our
heaven-born spirits should long for their native air. Yet should the
celestial summons be the object of patient waiting. Our God knows best
when to bid us "Come up thither." We must not wish to antedate the
period of our departure. I know that strong love will make us cry,

"O Lord of Hosts, the waves divide,
And land us all in heaven;"

but patience must have her perfect work. God ordains with accurate
wisdom the most fitting time for the redeemed to abide below. Surely,
if there could be regrets in heaven, the saints might mourn that they
did not live longer here to do more good. Oh, for more sheaves for my
Lord's garner! more jewels for his crown! But how, unless there be more
work? True, there is the other side of it, that, living so briefly, our
sins are the fewer; but oh! when we are fully serving God, and he is
giving us to scatter precious seed, and reap a hundredfold, we would
even say it is well for us to abide where we are. Whether our Master
shall say "go," or "stay," let us be equally well pleased so long as he
indulges us with his presence.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Discipline Of Dejection"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 7, 2008

THE DISCIPLINE OF DEJECTION

But we trusted ... and beside all this, to-day is the
third day ...

Luke 24:21

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+24:21&sr=1

Every fact that the disciples stated was right; but the inferences
they drew from those facts were wrong. Anything that savours of
dejection spiritually is always wrong. If depression and oppression
visit me, I am to blame; God is not, nor is anyone else. Dejection
springs from one of two sources - I have either satisfied a lust or I
have not. Lust means - I must have it at once. Spiritual lust makes
me demand an answer from God, instead of seeking God Who gives the
answer. What have I been trusting God would do? And to-day - the
immediate present - is the third day, and He has not done it;
therefore I imagine I am justified in being dejected and in blaming
God. Whenever the insistence is on the point that God answers prayer,
we are off the track. The meaning of prayer is that we get hold of
God, not of the answer. It is impossible to be well physically and to
be dejected. Dejection is a sign of sickness, and the same thing is
true spiritually. Dejection spiritually is wrong, and we are always
to blame for it.

We look for visions from heaven, for earthquakes and thunders of
God's power (the fact that we are dejected proves that we do), and we
never dream that all the time God is in the commonplace things and
people around us. If we will do the duty that lies nearest, we shall
see Him. One of the most amazing revelations of God comes when we
learn that it is in the commonplace things that the Deity of Jesus
Christ is realized.

Praying with Paul : "God's Sovereign Choice"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S SOVEREIGN CHOICE

Romans 9:19-20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+9:19-20

Dear Father,

All who are descended from Israel do not belong to Israel, nor are
men counted as Abraham's children by mere physical descent.

You, O Sovereign Lord, have chosen, according to your own desire
and purpose, those you want to continue your work in the world.

Thank you, dear Father, that your choice and mercy has reached to
me. Thank you for all that you are doing in my life. Thank you for
teaching me to love the descendants of Israel by the flesh. May my
share in their inheritance cause even one of them to turn to Jesus
Christ in saving faith and give thanks to you.

In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Someday He Will Be Taken Away -- Mark 2:19-20

Someday He Will Be Taken Away

Jesus answered, "{When there is a wedding,} the friends of
the bridegroom are not sad while he is with them. They cannot
fast (be sad) while the bridegroom is still there. But the
time will come when the bridegroom will leave them. The
friends are sad when the bridegroom leaves. Then they will
fast.

-- Mark 2:19-20 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The reason Jesus' disciples didn't fast (see the previous verses) was
involved with the timing of his ministry, not their piety. They would
fast when he was taken from them -- the first hint that Jesus will face
a painful ending to his life. While he was present with them
physically, however, they would not fast. Instead, they would enjoy his
presence and celebrate his love.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, help me know the proper time for each of my spiritual
observances -- feasting and fasting, rejoicing and weeping, comforting
or being comforted, praising or repenting contritely. This I ask in
Jesus' name. Amen.
