Today's Verse : 1 John 4:18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 11, 2009

VERSE:
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,
because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not
made perfect in love.

-- 1 John 4:18
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+4:18

THOUGHT:
There are many kinds of fear. Some of these are legitimate.
Others are imagined. Still others are irrational. Thankfully, as
Christians, we don't have to be afraid of the one crucial event in
our lives -- judgment. God's love saves us, empowers us, blesses
us, works in us, and touches others through us. Most of all, having
experienced this love, we can cast fear out of our hearts because
we know where we stand with God. He is our loving Father who longs
to bring us home!

PRAYER:
Holy, majestic, and awesome God, you are mighty in your
strength. You are holy beyond comparison. You are righteous and
fair in your dealings with your people. Most of all, dear Father, I
thank you because you do not deal with me as my sins deserve. No, O
God, you deal with me graciously, blessing me with your redeeming
and transforming grace. Your love gives me confidence to live for
you and to await the day I stand before you. Until that day I offer
you my thanks and praise in Jesus' holy name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Power of God

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Power of God
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times. And he broke down and wept. Mark 14:72 NIV

Please don't fail to see beyond the initial truth of this familiar story.

Yes, this is a story about humility. It is a story about standing tall for Jesus, being unashamed of the gospel of Christ. It reminds us of our own frailties as we watch Peter, a man full of faith, struggle with fear and doubt. Peter, the ROCK with a faith upon which the church of Christ's foundation is laid, has stumbled and we see fully his humanity.

Yes, this is a story about the suffering death which Christ experienced for you and me. One of His closest disciples, perhaps the only one who dared come this far with Him, denies His very existence. Jesus would die alone. Yes, this story reminds us of restoration and forgiveness. We read later in Scripture ho w Jesus brings Peter back into full fellowship with Him. Peter, obviously broken by the experience, is restored into a loving relationship with His Savior. We see from this that Christ stands ready and eager to forgive us when we fail Him.

But, I want you to also see the power of God in this story. Imagine for a moment the city that day. I would suppose there was more than just one rooster, wouldn't you? And yet God controlled the mouth of every rooster until Peter had denied Him three times. What difference does that make? It points to the fact that God will command all of His creation to mold us into who He wants us to be. God uses everything He has to make us the kind of people He can bless.

Peter was never the same because God kept a rooster from crowing. Watch for God today to affect the circumstances around you to change your life forever.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Considering Valentine's Day, by Sarah Stirman

My family experienced some minor medical drama the week between
Christmas and New Year's while traveling out of state. On one of my
many trips to the drug store, I had to stop dead in my tracks. I was
perusing the Christmas decorations and wrapping paper on clearance. I
turned around to look for more, and was faced with a shelf full of
boxes of Valentine's cards that children will use to declare love for
classmates. Before the confetti of the New Year's holiday is swept up,
the shelves in stores are fully stocked with hearts, balloons, and all
manner of Valentine props and paraphernalia.

Maybe it's age, maybe it's motherhood, maybe it's global warming, but I
don't think of Valentine's Day the same way that I did as a young,
single woman or newlywed. Valentine's Day is a fun, light-hearted
opportunity to lavish love on those around you, but life has shown me
that love rarely looks like the front of a Hallmark card.

Love is not running along a beach hand in hand. Love holds the
flashlight in the middle of the night, make-up long gone and tempers
flaring, holding your tongue while your sweetie attempts an emergency
home repair. Love isn't demonstrated by dewy eyes across a candlelit
meal, but rather by one more run to the doctor or pharmacy when you are
exhausted beyond reasonable or rational thought.

Valentine's Day lends itself to romance. Romance is wonderful and
exciting, but won't take you very far when the stomach bug hits, or
your "Love Shack" floods, or one of your parents is critically ill
and/or dies. Romance will not be found in any of those situations, but
love is there larger than life. Love brings the cool wash cloth again
and again for the stomach bug, and mops and covertly repairs damaged
keepsakes during the flood, and cries and holds and works and loves
with an ill family member.

Love is not rose petals and champagne, but aching backs and work
gloves. Love at my house never dances in an evening gown or tuxedo, but
love supplies the elbow grease, the patience, the encouragement, and
the clean clothes to face each day and, Lord willin' a comforting place
to come home to when the day seems to come out on top. Love is holding
tight when no words will fix it, and tears the only language uttered.

Love is not a polished, glimmery state. Love is messy, inconvenient,
and frustrating. Love is giving up the last ounce of energy, sleep,
time, or chocolate for the well-being of another. Love isn't found in
romantic restaurants or destinations, but in hospital waiting rooms,
the lobby of funeral homes, and kneeling in prayer next to race-car or
princess beds in the middle of the night. Love is less about flowers
and cartoon hearts, and everything about the value of another soul on
this planet. I guess that's a little harder to put on the side of a
coffee mug.

I will play along this Valentine's Day, like all the others, and I
certainly hope for you to feel cherished on that day. But, later in the
year when the toilet overflows while the drama at school comes to a
boiling point and work causes too many demands to keep everyone civil,
love will be there with a plunger, Kleenex for the tears, and hugs,
pats, and kisses for all the things the plunger and Kleenex won't fix.
Consider that your own Valentine's Day -- but don't look for Hallmark
to make a card for it anytime soon.

Love will be there with a plunger!

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not
easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight
in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always
trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails (1
Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV).

Morning & Evening -- Philippians 4:12 and Isaiah 44:22

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

MORNING:

"I know how to abound."
-- Philippians 4:12

There are many who know "how to be abased" who have not learned "how to
abound." When they are set upon the top of a pinnacle their heads grow
dizzy, and they are ready to fall. The Christian far oftener disgraces
his profession in prosperity than in adversity. It is a dangerous thing
to be prosperous. The crucible of adversity is a less severe trial to
the Christian than the refining pot of prosperity. Oh, what leanness of
soul and neglect of spiritual things have been brought on through the
very mercies and bounties of God! Yet this is not a matter of
necessity, for the apostle tells us that he knew how to abound. When he
had much he knew how to use it. Abundant grace enabled him to bear
abundant prosperity. When he had a full sail he was loaded with much
ballast, and so floated safely. It needs more than human skill to carry
the brimming cup of mortal joy with a steady hand, yet Paul had learned
that skill, for he declares, "In all things I am instructed both to be
full and to be hungry." It is a divine lesson to know how to be full,
for the Israelites were full once, but while the flesh was yet in their
mouth, the wrath of God came upon them. Many have asked for mercies
that they might satisfy their own hearts' lust. Fulness of bread has
often made fulness of blood, and that has brought on wantonness of
spirit. When we have much of God's providential mercies, it often
happens that we have but little of God's grace, and little gratitude
for the bounties we have received. We are full and we forget God:
satisfied with earth, we are content to do without heaven. Rest assured
it is harder to know how to be full than it is to know how to be
hungry-so desperate is the tendency of human nature to pride and
forgetfulness of God. Take care that you ask in your prayers that God
would teach you "how to be full."

"Let not the gifts thy love bestows
Estrange our hearts from thee."

EVENING:

"I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions,
and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed
thee."
-- Isaiah 44:22

Attentively observe THE INSTRUCTIVE SIMILITUDE: our sins are like a
cloud. As clouds are of many shapes and shades, so are our
transgressions. As clouds obscure the light of the sun, and darken the
landscape beneath, so do our sins hide from us the light of Jehovah's
face, and cause us to sit in the shadow of death. They are earth-born
things, and rise from the miry places of our nature; and when so
collected that their measure is full, they threaten us with storm and
tempest. Alas! that, unlike clouds, our sins yield us no genial
showers, but rather threaten to deluge us with a fiery flood of
destruction. O ye black clouds of sin, how can it be fair weather with
our souls while ye remain?

Let our joyful eye dwell upon THE NOTABLE ACT of divine mercy-"blotting
out." God himself appears upon the scene, and in divine benignity,
instead of manifesting his anger, reveals his grace: he at once and for
ever effectually removes the mischief, not by blowing away the cloud,
but by blotting it out from existence once for all. Against the
justified man no sin remains, the great transaction of the cross has
eternally removed his transgressions from him. On Calvary's summit the
great deed, by which the sin of all the chosen was for ever put away,
was completely and effectually performed.

Practically let us obey THE GRACIOUS COMMAND, "return unto me." Why
should pardoned sinners live at a distance from their God? If we have
been forgiven all our sins, let no legal fear withhold us from the
boldest access to our Lord. Let backslidings be bemoaned, but let us
not persevere in them. To the greatest possible nearness of communion
with the Lord, let us, in the power of the Holy Spirit, strive mightily
to return. O Lord, this night restore us!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Is Your Imagination Of God Starved?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 10, 2009

IS YOUR IMAGINATION OF GOD STARVED?

Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created
these things.

Isaiah 40:26
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+40:26&sr=1

The people of God in Isaiah's day had starved their imagination by
looking on the face of idols, and Isaiah made them look up at the
heavens, that is, he made them begin to use their imagination aright.
Nature to a saint is sacramental. If we are children of God, we have
a tremendous treasure in Nature. In every wind that blows, in every
night and day of the year, in every sign of the sky, in every
blossoming and in every withering of the earth, there is a real
coming of God to us if we will simply use our starved imagination to
realize it.

The test of spiritual concentration is bringing the imagination into
captivity. Is your imagination looking on the face of an idol? Is the
idol yourself? Your work? Your conception of what a worker should be?
Your experience of salvation and sanctification? Then your
imagination of God is starved, and when you are up against
difficulties you have no power, you can only endure in darkness. If
your imagination is starved, do not look back to your own experience;
it is God Whom you need. Go right out of yourself, away from the face
of your idols, away from everything that has been starving your
imagination. Rouse yourself, take the gibe that Isaiah gave the
people, and deliberately turn your imagination to God.

One of the reasons of stultification in prayer is that there is no
imagination, no power of putting ourselves deliberately before God.
We have to learn how to be broken bread and poured out wine on the
line of intercession more than on the line of personal contact.
Imagination is the power God gives a saint to posit himself out of
himself into relationships he never was in.

Praying with Paul : "I Confess!"

I CONFESS!

Romans 10:1-8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+10:1-8

Dear Father,

Thank you that Christ is the end of the law to those who have
faith. Thank you that I am justified by faith in him, not by some
system of merit.

May I not think of Christ as being so high in heaven that he is
inaccessible to us, or, like unbelievers, think of him as being
dead and not available.

May I continually confess with my mouth the belief that is in my
heart: Jesus is Lord! And God raised him from the dead!

Help me rather to know that he is nearer than breathing!

In Jesus' name. Amen.

WJD! -- More Than Anything Else -- Matthew 5:6

More Than Anything Else

"What great blessings there are for the people that want to
do right more than anything else! God will fully satisfy
them."

-- Matthew 5:6 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Other translations use the wording of hungering and thirsting after
righteousness where this translation refers to those who want to do
right. Except for a voluntary fast, most of us who spend our time on
the net don't know what it's like to be hungry. But nearly all of us,
at one time or another, have been very, very thirsty! To hunger and
thirst for righteousness is to want what pleases, honors, and reflects
God more than anything else. To be righteous becomes our consuming
passion. This spiritual commitment takes on a primal drive, much like
hunger and thirst drive us physically. Like so many of these beatitudes
in Matthew 5:3-11, finding our lives in God, his nature and his
character is our only path to fulfillment.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Righteous Father, while I know I can never even approximate
the edges of your righteous character, please use the Holy Spirit to
make me into the person who reflects your holiness to those around me.
Where I am inconsistent, please help me become faithful. Where I am
tempestuous and undisciplined, please bless me with self-control. Where
I am insensitive and unfeeling, please help me see life from the point
of view of others. O Father, I so much want to please and honor you in
what I say and do. Thank you for your grace. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.
