Today's Verse : Colossians 2:6-7

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 6, 2008

VERSE:
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to
live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith
as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
-- Colossians 2:6-7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+2:6-7

THOUGHT:
Jesus is our center! He is the hub around which we turn. Rather
than trying to add on to the truth of Jesus, we must learn to
accept it and trust it in child-like faith. But that child-like
faith must be nourished and grown. As Jesus remains our central
focus and our hearts remain thankful to God for his grace, we will
find ourselves strengthened in our faith and Jesus more real than
ever.

PRAYER:
Holy and Righteous God, please give me eyes to see evil and
avoid it. Please give me wisdom to know deceptive and false
teaching when it is placed before me. Empower me to live a thankful
life of holiness to your honor and glory. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Gehazi Two

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Gehazi Two
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, "My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him." 2 Kings 5:20 NIV

Some people are always looking out for themselves. Have you known anyone like this? They are usually marked people. They are known as takers, not givers. These people violate the tenth commandment of God, because they covet the property of others. Please, dear reader, dont be found among the takers!

Gehazi had watched in awe as the prophet Elisha advised Naaman how to cure his leprosy. Naaman had rejected the advice at first, because he felt it was beneath his dignity to dump himself in the muddy river. But, at the wise counsel of those traveling with Naaman, he was healed and made whole again. He was eternally grateful to Elisha and wanted to repay him for the blessing of his health. Elisha refused payment, sinc e he was acting according to Gods commands and not on his own. Gehazi felt that Elisha had passed up a pot of gold.

Keep in mind that prophets in this day were servants of God. They werent wealthy. They were quite often poor. Gehazi probably suffered from poverty along with Elisha. He saw the riches of Naaman and they looked enticing. The grass looked greener on the other side. If only we had that, we wouldnt need for anything else, Gehazi probably thought.

Ever feel like Gehazi? You serve God, seemingly doing without, while you watch others, who dont know God like you do, who seem to have all the goods? It doesnt seem fair sometimes, does it? If the God we serve owns the cattle on a thousand hills, then why are we doing without beef? Wheres the beef, God, we are tempted to reverently ask.

Elisha knew a principle that Gehazi had not yet learned. God does supply, but not always on our time or in the method we would choose. Elisha had lea rned, as Paul said in the New Testament, the secret of being content. He knew what it was like to have plenty and he knew what it was like to have to wait on God. And, he had found that he could have satisfaction in either situation.

What about you (and me)? Are we more like Elisha, or are we more like Gehazi? When we are experiencing great blessings of God, it is easy to trust Him. Is the same true when it appears we are doing without; when it even sometimes appears that God is no where to be found? Can we trust Him even in the hard times, that He will once again bring about the good?

Thats the deepest prayer of my life this year.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Excuse Making, by Rubel Shelly

You know it happens. In fact, we've all done it more times than we care
to admit. Rather than owning up to a mistake, we make excuses:

* "What I did wasn't as bad as what he did."

* "I can't help being the way God made me."

* "I know it hurt her feelings, but I only told the truth."

There is nothing new or creative about this approach. It is as old as
Eden and deeply ingrained in the processes of human thought and speech
(Genesis 3).

"The woman you gave me caused me to eat it."
"Kings get bored just sitting on their balconies."
"Crucify him! Who knows the truth about him anyway?"

The trick of refusing to accept responsibility has been
institutionalized in our culture. Several years ago, the famous
psychiatrist Karl Menninger called attention to the virtual
disappearance of the word "sin" from contemporary vocabulary. With a
sort of verbal sleight of hand, we tend to use a soft word such as
"mistake" where we would better use the more severe term "sin"; we seem
to prefer "sickness" to "evil." The softer words don't sound nearly so
serious.

The greatest sin of all is blindness to one's own sinfulness. Until sin
is admitted, forgiveness is irrelevant. Only when I accept
responsibility for my actions can anything constructive be done toward
putting things right. The language of honest confession is a far cry
from making excuses:

"God, be merciful to me. I am a sinner" (Luke 18:13).
"Jesus came to save sinners -- of whom I am the worst" (1 Timothy
1:15).
"If we confess our sins, he will forgive and cleanse us ..." (1
John 1:7).

It is a rare person who admits to the error.

It is a rare person who is brave enough to admit that he made the error
on an office report, that she was the one guilty of spreading an
unflattering tale, or that the marriage is failing because he has been
abusive.

Rare as such persons may be, they are the ones who deserve the highest
respect. They are the ones who correct faults, salvage relationships,
and conquer defects of character. In their remorse, they find God. In
finding God, they find not only pardon but empowerment to live an
entirely new way.

If you're hiding behind a smokescreen of excuses, it is time to step
into the light of honesty. You'll see things clearly -- for the first
time in a long time.

Morning & Evening -- 1 John 4:14 and Matthew 11:25

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

MORNING:

"The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world."
-- 1 John 4:14

It is a sweet thought that Jesus Christ did not come forth without his
Father's permission, authority, consent, and assistance. He was sent of
the Father, that he might be the Saviour of men. We are too apt to
forget that, while there are distinctions as to the persons in the
Trinity, there are no distinctions of honour. We too frequently ascribe
the honour of our salvation, or at least the depths of its benevolence,
more to Jesus Christ than we do the Father. This is a very great
mistake. What if Jesus came? Did not his Father send him? If he spake
wondrously, did not his Father pour grace into his lips, that he might
be an able minister of the new covenant? He who knoweth the Father, and
the Son, and the Holy Ghost as he should know them, never setteth one
before another in his love; he sees them at Bethlehem, at Gethsemane,
and on Calvary, all equally engaged in the work of salvation. O
Christian, hast thou put thy confidence in the Man Christ Jesus? Hast
thou placed thy reliance solely on him? And art thou united with him?
Then believe that thou art united unto the God of heaven. Since to the
Man Christ Jesus thou art brother, and holdest closest fellowship, thou
art linked thereby with God the Eternal, and "the Ancient of days" is
thy Father and thy friend. Didst thou ever consider the depth of love
in the heart of Jehovah, when God the Father equipped his Son for the
great enterprise of mercy? If not, be this thy day's meditation. The
Father sent him! Contemplate that subject. Think how Jesus works what
the Father wills. In the wounds of the dying Saviour see the love of
the great I AM. Let every thought of Jesus be also connected with the
Eternal, ever-blessed God, for "It pleased the Lord to bruise him; he
hath put him to grief."

EVENING:

"At that time Jesus answered."
-- Matthew 11:25

This is a singular way in which to commence a verse-"At that time Jesus
answered." If you will look at the context you will not perceive that
any person had asked him a question, or that he was in conversation
with any human being. Yet it is written, "Jesus answered and said, I
thank thee, O Father." When a man answers, he answers a person who has
been speaking to him. Who, then, had spoken to Christ? his Father. Yet
there is no record of it; and this should teach us that Jesus had
constant fellowship with his Father, and that God spake into his heart
so often, so continually, that it was not a circumstance singular
enough to be recorded. It was the habit and life of Jesus to talk with
God. Even as Jesus was, in this world, so are we; let us therefore
learn the lesson which this simple statement concerning him teaches us.
May we likewise have silent fellowship with the Father, so that often
we may answer him, and though the world wotteth not to whom we speak,
may we be responding to that secret voice unheard of any other ear,
which our own ear, opened by the Spirit of God, recognizes with joy.
God has spoken to us, let us speak to God-either to set our seal that
God is true and faithful to his promise, or to confess the sin of which
the Spirit of God has convinced us, or to acknowledge the mercy which
God's providence has given, or to express assent to the great truths
which God the Holy Ghost has opened to our understanding. What a
privilege is intimate communion with the Father of our spirits! It is a
secret hidden from the world, a joy with which even the nearest friend
intermeddleth not. If we would hear the whispers of God's love, our ear
must be purged and fitted to listen to his voice. This very evening may
our hearts be in such a state, that when God speaks to us, we, like
Jesus, may be prepared at once to answer him.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Are You Ready To Be Offered?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 5, 2008

ARE YOU READY TO BE OFFERED?

Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service
of your faith, I joy and rejoice with you all.

Philippians 2:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=php+2:17&sr=1

Are you willing to be offered for the work of the faithful - to pour
out your life blood as a libation on the sacrifice of the faith of
others? Or do you say - "I am not going to be offered up just yet, I
do not want God to choose my work. I want to choose the scenery of my
own sacrifice; I want to have the right kind of people watching and
saying, 'Well done.'

It is one thing to go on the lonely way with dignified heroism, but
quite another thing if the line mapped out for you by God means being
a door-mat under other people's feet. Suppose God wants to teach you
to say, "I know how to be abased" - are you ready to be offered up
like that? Are you ready to be not so much as a drop in a bucket - to
be so hopelessly insignificant that you are never thought of again in
connection with the life you served? Are you willing to spend and be
spent; not seeking to be ministered unto, but to minister? Some
saints cannot do menial work and remain saints because it is beneath
their dignity.

Praying with Paul : "Empowered by Love"

EMPOWERED BY LOVE

Romans 8:38-39

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+8:38-39

Dear Father, faithful God,

Fill my heart with the deep conviction that neither death, nor
life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor
things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able to separate me from the love
which you have for me in Christ Jesus.

Amen. Let it be so for me! Fill me with the joy and peace of so
believing! I praise your holy name and the name of Jesus through
the Spirit for your precious empowering promises! Thank you,
Father, thank you.

In the name of Jesus and by his authority I come, asking for the
confirmation of the faith I have expressed here. Fill me with it
and let me walk according to your purposes. Amen.

WJD! -- Among Sinners -- Mark 2:15-17

Among Sinners

Later that day, Jesus ate at Levi's house. There were many
tax collectors and other bad people eating there with Jesus
and his followers. There were many of these people that
followed Jesus. The teachers of the law (they were Pharisees)
saw Jesus eating with these tax collectors and other bad
people. They asked Jesus' followers, "Why does he (Jesus) eat
with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus heard this, and he
said to them, "Healthy people don't need a doctor. It is the
sick people that need a doctor. I did not come to invite good
people. I came to invite sinners."

-- Mark 2:15-17 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus came to save sinners. Yes, all of us are sinners. Unfortunately,
many try to pretend they are not sinners or defend the sins they have
committed as "normal failures" or "mistakes." This is true even of
people who consider themselves religious. Jesus reminds us that he came
to rescue sinners. He came for us. He came to call us to join him in
the work. Will we respond?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Righteous Father, thank you for sending Jesus to save me from my sins.
Without your grace, I know that I would be lost. Please use me to help
others find their way to your grace. In Jesus' name. Amen.
