=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Why Have You Forsaken Me?, by Phil Ware

Alone, alone, all alone,
Alone on the wide wide sea!
And never a saint took pity on
My soul in agony!
The many men, so beautiful!
And they all dead did lie:
And a thousand thousand slimy things
Live on; and so did I.

Many of us read these words from Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel
Taylor Coleridge, when we were in high school or college. The two lines
that resonate with me as I think about Jesus on the cross are these:

Alone, alone, all alone ...
My soul in agony!

Sounds a whole lot like, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which means
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?") (Mark 15:34 TNIV). These
words of desperation capture Jesus' soul in agony as he hangs upon the
cross. He has been beaten with rods, spat upon, mocked, ridiculed,
carried his own cross, nailed down, hung exposed before a jeering mob
as his life ebbed away.

In this moment of desperation, he bears the weight of our sin so we
could become God's righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). He is abandoned,
forsaken, betrayed, and denied by those who are closest to him. He even
feels abandoned by God, the Abba Father he prayed would deliver him
from this horrible moment (Mark 14:36). These words of Jesus come from
the opening verses of Psalm 22. As you read on down through the psalm,
you also see phrases that speak of Jesus' agony on the cross:

I am scorned by everyone,
despised by the people (Psalm 22:6 TNIV).

All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads (Psalm 22:7).

... a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce my hands and my feet (Psalm 22:16).

All my bones are on display;
people stare and gloat over me (Psalm 22:17).

They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment (Psalm 22:18).

This psalm is Jesus' story. The psalm describes what Jesus faces and
describes powerfully what he feels as he faces its horror. He knew what
was going to happen! He told his disciples repeatedly he was going to
Jerusalem to be rejected and killed (Mark 8:31; Mark 9:31; Mark
10:33-34) and the famous psalm describes the Lord's journey in bitterly
vivid detail. That's what makes Jesus' words to his closest friends so
poignant to me: "A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be
scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone ..." (John
16:32).

Jesus went to the cross alone ... feeling alone ... abandoned by his
friends. So Jesus words, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
are comforting to us when we face unbearable loneliness and we feel
that we've been betrayed by everyone. He knows how we feel -- not just
because he is God and knows everything, but because he has felt it in
human skin. God felt distant to him as he does to us. God seems as
unwilling to hear his Son's prayers as he appears to be unwilling to
hear our prayers. Or as our Psalm says, "My God, I cry out by day, but
you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest" (Psalm 22:2).

But notice what Jesus said to his followers again, and this time we'll
finish the thought:

A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered,
each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not
alone, for my Father is with me (John 16:32 emphasis mine).

Jesus felt alone ... all alone ... his soul in agony. He even felt
abandoned by God. He knew his closest friends would desert him. But, as
he showed by referring to the Psalm, that is how he felt: but not what
he believed. When you read the rest of the psalm, you understand why he
told his friends, Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me (John
16:32 b). Look at what the rest of this famous Psalm declares:

But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
You are my strength; come quickly to help me (Psalm 22:19).

I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you (Psalm 22:22).

For he has not despised or scorned
the suffering of the afflicted one;

he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help

(Psalm 22:24).

"For my Father is with me!"

In the middle of our struggles, we have a Lord who understands what it
means to feel so alone that you feel abandoned by God. He carried the
weight of the sins of the world. He was deserted by his friends and he
felt abandoned by God. But he believed God would deliver him. He
trusted that God would not abandon him, no matter what the
circumstances appeared to suggest -- no matter how heavy the weight of
sin and shame he bore.

What does that mean to us?

It means that when we feel abandoned, we have a Savior who has been
there. He went through what he suffered so we could know that we would
never be abandoned by our Father (Romans 8:32-39). We can trust that
God will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6).

No matter how we feel, our Savior reminds us that we can believe in
God's Word and our Father's faithfulness. Since God didn't abandon his
Son when he carried our sins, he won't abandon us in our moments of
weakness and brokenness. If the Lord of heaven and earth could cry out
honestly in his agony, so can we. And underneath it all, we can say
with Jesus, "I am not alone, for my Father is with me."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We often hear that God turned his back on his Son because Jesus was
carrying the guilt of our sin. How do you reconcile that with John
16:32? Where do you find a Scripture supporting this concept?

How is it a blessing to us to know that Jesus felt abandoned, but in
faith, trusted that God would not abandon him and would be faithful to
his promises?

I'd love to hear from you on my blog:

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 73:22 and Acts 10:38

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, July 28, 2008

MORNING:

"So foolish was I, and ignorant; I was as a beast before
thee."
-- Psalms 73:22

Remember this is the confession of the man after God's own heart; and
in telling us his inner life, he writes, "So foolish was I, and
ignorant." The word "foolish," here, means more than it signifies in
ordinary language. David, in a former verse of the Psalm, writes, "I
was envious at the foolish when I saw the prosperity of the wicked,"
which shows that the folly he intended had sin in it. He puts himself
down as being thus "foolish," and adds a word which is to give
intensity to it; "so foolish was I." How foolish he could not tell. It
was a sinful folly, a folly which was not to be excused by frailty, but
to be condemned because of its perverseness and wilful ignorance, for
he had been envious of the present prosperity of the ungodly, forgetful
of the dreadful end awaiting all such. And are we better than David
that we should call ourselves wise! Do we profess that we have attained
perfection, or to have been so chastened that the rod has taken all our
wilfulness out of us? Ah, this were pride indeed! If David was foolish,
how foolish should we be in our own esteem if we could but see
ourselves! Look back, believer: think of your doubting God when he has
been so faithful to you-think of your foolish outcry of "Not so, my
Father," when he crossed his hands in affliction to give you the larger
blessing; think of the many times when you have read his providences in
the dark, misinterpreted his dispensations, and groaned out, "All these
things are against me," when they are all working together for your
good! Think how often you have chosen sin because of its pleasure, when
indeed, that pleasure was a root of bitterness to you! Surely if we
know our own heart we must plead guilty to the indictment of a sinful
folly; and conscious of this "foolishness," we must make David's
consequent resolve our own-"Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel."

EVENING:

"Who went about doing good."
-- Acts 10:38

Few words, but yet an exquisite miniature of the Lord Jesus Christ.
There are not many touches, but they are the strokes of a master's
pencil. Of the Saviour and only of the Saviour is it true in the
fullest, broadest, and most unqualified sense. "He went about doing
good." From this description it is evident that he did good personally.
The evangelists constantly tell us that he touched the leper with his
own finger, that he anointed the eyes of the blind, and that in cases
where he was asked to speak the word only at a distance, he did not
usually comply, but went himself to the sick bed, and there personally
wrought the cure. A lesson to us, if we would do good, to do it
ourselves. Give alms with your own hand; a kind look, or word, will
enhance the value of the gift. Speak to a friend about his soul; your
loving appeal will have more influence than a whole library of tracts.
Our Lord's mode of doing good sets forth his incessant activity! He did
not only the good which came close to hand, but he "went about" on his
errands of mercy. Throughout the whole land of Judea there was scarcely
a village or a hamlet which was not gladdened by the sight of him. How
this reproves the creeping, loitering manner, in which many professors
serve the Lord. Let us gird up the loins of our mind, and be not weary
in well doing. Does not the text imply that Jesus Christ went out of
his way to do good? "He went about doing good." He was never deterred
by danger or difficulty. He sought out the objects of his gracious
intentions. So must we. If old plans will not answer, we must try new
ones, for fresh experiments sometimes achieve more than regular
methods. Christ's perseverance, and the unity of his purpose, are also
hinted at, and the practical application of the subject may be summed
up in the words, "He hath left us an example that we should follow in
his steps."

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Garden Story 1

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Garden Story 1
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
When He had finished praying, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and He and His disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?" John 18:1-4 NIV

To catch you up with where this story appears in Scripture, Jesus and the disciples had recently left the Lords Supper, gone for a long walk, and went into the Garden of Gethsemane. Along the way to the garden, Jesus had been teaching the disciples, preparing them for His departure.

During this time intense time, Jesus powerfully delivered some of His strongest words. He claimed to be the way, the truth and the l ife and said that no one comes to the Father except through Me. Never had anyone been so bold. Jesus told the disciples they must learn to abide in Him, because apart from Him they would be able to do nothing. Jesus promised to send the Comforter and taught how the Holy Spirit would impact the lives of believers. He promised them that the world would hate them, as it had hated Him, and that they would experience trials, but they didnt have to be afraid, because Jesus had already overcome the world. Just before entering the garden, Jesus prayed for Himself, His disciples, and all believers.

That was a lot to accomplish in a day. Jesus was probably tired, yet, we know that Jesus didnt go to the garden to rest. Instead He went to the garden for more prayer.

What do you do when you are at your weakest? If youre like me you just want to crash, but if we want to be like Jesus, we will learn that the toughest times of life are when we must practice prayer the mo st. Jesus needed physical strength for the journey ahead and He found it through prayer.

Lord, in our darkest days, remind us to find our strength in You!

My Utmost For His Highest : "After Obedience - What?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 28, 2008

AFTER OBEDIENCE - WHAT?

And straightway He constrained His disciples to get into
the ship, and to go to the other side... ."

Mark 6:45-52
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mr+6:45-52&sr=1

We are apt to imagine that if Jesus Christ constrains us, and we obey
Him, He will lead us to great success. We must never put our dreams
of success as God's purpose for us; His purpose may be exactly the
opposite. We have an idea that God is leading us to a particular end,
a desired goal; He is not. The question of getting to a particular
end is a mere incident. What we call the process, God calls the end.

What is my dream of God's purpose? His purpose is that I depend on
Him and on His power now. If I can stay in the middle of the turmoil
calm and unperplexed, that is the end of the purpose of God. God is
not working towards a particular finish; His end is the process -
that I see Him walking on the waves, no shore in sight, no success,
no goal, just the absolute certainty that it is all right because I
see Him walking on the sea. It is the process, not the end, which is
glorifying to God.

God's training is for now, not presently. His purpose is for this
minute, not for something in the future. We have nothing to do with
the afterwards of obedience; we get wrong when we think of the
afterwards. What men call training and preparation, God calls the
end.

God's end is to enable me to see that He can walk on the chaos of my
life just now. If we have a further end in view, we do not pay
sufficient attention to the immediate present: if we realize that
obedience is the end, then each moment as it comes is precious.

Dear Father, all worthy God,

Please give me the mind of Christ so that my body may be a temple
of the spirit of holiness which is his.

May you yourself, O Father, make me holy through and through. May
my whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless by your power at

I trust you to do this because you are the one who has called me,
and you are faithful. Your word says that you will do it!

WJD! -- Are You Able! -- Mark 10:37-38

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Are You Able!

The sons answered, "You will have glory {in your kingdom}.
Let one of us sit at your right, and let one of us sit at
your left." Jesus said, "You don't understand what you are
asking. Can you accept the kind of suffering that I must
have? Can you be baptized with the same kind of baptism that
I must have?"

-- Mark 10:37-38 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Before we overestimate what we would actually do to serve the Lord, we
had better look at some who failed him miserably. This is not to
discourage us, but to humble us and remind us of how difficult it is to
let faith triumph over fear and trust win over trial. We will not make
it on our own, but with the help of the Lord and the encouragement of
each other, by God's grace we can remain faithful even unto the point
of death.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, I confess that I cannot do it alone. My strength is not
sufficient. Even looking at the great heroes of faith who have paid the
ultimate price before me, I'm sure that I don't have the strength to
pay the ultimate price on my own. So, dear Father, I turn to you and
the power of the Holy Spirit to sustain me. I ask that the
encouragement and support of your people can uphold me. I promise to do
my best, but I also know that without your grace, my best is not
sufficient. So please strengthen my courage and inspire my strength. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Matthew 7:28-29

July 28, 2008

VERSE:
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were
amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority,
and not as their teachers of the law.
-- Matthew 7:28-29
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Matthew+7:28-29

THOUGHT:
Unlike the teachers of his day, Jesus didn't have to shore up
his teaching with obscure quotes from past teachers. Jesus, the
Word of God, spoke the very words of God. He did and said what the
Father willed. His life and his words had ring of authenticity and
an awareness of power that extend through the ages and beckon us to
his truth. This Jesus, our Teacher and Lord, is different. His
words are powerful. His teachings are true. So his will must be our
passion!

PRAYER:
Holy God, thank you for speaking through your prophets and
through your Scriptures. But, Father, I praise you for speaking
your greatest message in Jesus. As I see the character of his life,
I am drawn to you. As I hear the authenticity in his words, I seek
to humbly obey. Thank you for sending Jesus to be my teacher, my
guide, my Lord, and my Savior. It is in his name, Jesus, that I
pray. Amen.
