Today's Verse : 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 30, 2008

VERSE:
...you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from
God -- that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the
Lord."
-- 1 Corinthians 1:30-31

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+1:30-31

THOUGHT:
Jesus is our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. Let's
unpack those church words. Righteousness -- the ability to stand
before God and be declared free from guilt. Holiness -- the
character and nature that reflect the glory and sanctity of heaven.
Redemption -- the gift of freedom bought at great expense.
Christians aren't perfect? Hmmm! We know this is true. But, because
of Jesus' loving sacrifice, we also know that in God's eyes we're
righteous, holy, and redeemed. That, dear friend of Jesus, is what
we call amazing grace!

PRAYER:
How can I thank you, wise and merciful Father, for the gift of
Jesus? Your love in formulating the plan to send him, your
sacrifice in having him become mortal, your agony when your own
creations murdered him are too wonderful for understanding. But in
my heart I do know that you did these things because of your loving
grace and I want to thank you and praise you forever. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Offended Two

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Offended Two
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, "Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle." 1 Samuel 17:28 NIV

I wonder if David was thinking, Wow, what did I do to deserve all that? If you are not familiar with the story, David was sent by his father to the battle field to check on his brothers. David was the youngest son; apparently a very bright, energetic, bound-to-be successful kind of guy; enough so that it made his brothers uncomfortable. He was just being obedient to his father, but his brothers took offense.

I dont think David did anything wrong. I think he needed to go to be obedient to his father. I dont even have any advice if you find yourself in a similar situation. I just believe you should be aware of those times when just your p resence alone could be offensive. I think that awareness can often keep us from offending people unknowingly.

I have had two very successful church planting experiences. I dont share that to brag, but to use for illustration. I consistently get invited to meetings with other church planters. Sometimes I go, sometimes I dont. One thing I have had opportunity to do several times is to share our story in these settings. As much as I love sharing what God has done I also realize that sometimes when I do so I make others feel uncomfortable and as if they are less than successful in their own stories. I try to avoid those situations.

I recognize that God has me at a certain time and a certain place. Success is not based on numbers. Success is based on obedience to the command of God. I dont want someone who may have smaller numbers in a church plant to feel otherwise.

May we look for opportunities to NOT offend others!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

God's Good Creation, by Rubel Shelly

We tend to forget that Christianity was formed in the womb of Judaism.
Born into first-century Hebrew culture. Received and interpreted to us
by apostles and evangelists who knew Jesus in the context of his
Jewishness. Yet most of us know the Christian faith as it has been
passed through the vocabulary, culture, and mindset of Greco-Roman
culture. So what?

One of the major "so-what's" is the difference the two mindsets take
toward material things. The human body in particular. And pleasure.

Greek religion and philosophy separate material and spiritual, body and
soul in a way foreign to Judaism. Hebrew thought sees persons as
"living souls" in their totality. The invisible, spiritual part of a
person is not trapped in a body (i.e., the Greek idea), but is made
real and functional by means of it. Thus the goal is not to escape or
to chastise the body but to direct its energy God-ward.

Pleasure is not wicked. Laughter is God's gift! But, that is hardly the
notion most non-Christians reflect back to believers. They see us as a
pretty joyless crowd. Rather prune-faced. And more inclined to scowl
than to laugh.

We seem to have worked hard to create that unhealthy -- and, I might
add, uninviting -- image. Our "saints" tend to be dour, rather than
smiling. They look austere, rather than lovable. They often appear
rigid and forbidding, rather than humane and merciful. What a pity!

Each is a celebration of God's goodness.

Jesus went to parties. He enjoyed life so much that his critics tried
to make him out to be a drunk and a glutton. He had friends. Enjoyed
being with people. And made people feel comfortable around him. I have
no problem whatever in seeing him raise a glass to say, "L'chaim." To
life!

A long list of negatives is a poor way to define the gospel. The very
idea of "redemption" is less about going to heaven when we die as it is
making life here something positive and holy. Paul says Jesus "gave
himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age" (Galatians
1:4). Peter reminds Christians "that you were redeemed from the empty
way of life handed down to you" (1 Peter 1:18).

Steak, golf, sunsets, music, sex, money -- not one is unholy. All are
given by God to meet human needs. Directed toward him, each is both a
celebration of his goodness and a participation in his fullness.
Divorced from him, both pleasure and pain become vulgar. Not the act,
but its God-ward direction makes it holy.

In a world of wrinkled brows and wringing hands, one has to wonder if
the rediscovery of godly joy might be our best advertisement for the
faith we profess.

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected
if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by
the word of God and prayer (1 Timothy 4:4-5 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- 2 Corinthians 4:18 and Genesis 8:11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

MORNING:

"The things which are not seen."
-- 2 Corinthians 4:18

In our Christian pilgrimage it is well, for the most part, to be
looking forward. Forward lies the crown, and onward is the goal.
Whether it be for hope, for joy, for consolation, or for the inspiring
of our love, the future must, after all, be the grand object of the eye
of faith. Looking into the future we see sin cast out, the body of sin
and death destroyed, the soul made perfect, and fit to be a partaker of
the inheritance of the saints in light. Looking further yet, the
believer's enlightened eye can see death's river passed, the gloomy
stream forded, and the hills of light attained on which standeth the
celestial city; he seeth himself enter within the pearly gates, hailed
as more than conqueror, crowned by the hand of Christ, embraced in the
arms of Jesus, glorified with him, and made to sit together with him on
his throne, even as he has overcome and has sat down with the Father on
his throne. The thought of this future may well relieve the darkness of
the past and the gloom of the present. The joys of heaven will surely
compensate for the sorrows of earth. Hush, hush, my doubts! death is
but a narrow stream, and thou shalt soon have forded it. Time, how
short-eternity, how long! Death, how brief-immortality, how endless!
Methinks I even now eat of Eshcol's clusters, and sip of the well which
is within the gate. The road is so, so short! I shall soon be there.

"When the world my heart is rending
With its heaviest storm of care,
My glad thoughts to heaven ascending,
Find a refuge from despair.
Faith's bright vision shall sustain me
Till life's pilgrimage is past;
Fears may vex and troubles pain me,
I shall reach my home at last."

EVENING:

"The dove came in to him in the evening."
-- Genesis 8:11

Blessed be the Lord for another day of mercy, even though I am now
weary with its toils. Unto the preserver of men lift I my song of
gratitude. The dove found no rest out of the ark, and therefore
returned to it; and my soul has learned yet more fully than ever, this
day, that there is no satisfaction to be found in earthly things-God
alone can give rest to my spirit. As to my business, my possessions, my
family, my attainments, these are all well enough in their way, but
they cannot fulfil the desires of my immortal nature. "Return unto thy
rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee." It was
at the still hour, when the gates of the day were closing, that with
weary wing the dove came back to the master: O Lord, enable me this
evening thus to return to Jesus. She could not endure to spend a night
hovering over the restless waste, not can I bear to be even for another
hour away from Jesus, the rest of my heart, the home of my spirit. She
did not merely alight upon the roof of the ark, she "came in to him;"
even so would my longing spirit look into the secret of the Lord,
pierce to the interior of truth, enter into that which is within the
veil, and reach to my Beloved in very deed. To Jesus must I come: short
of the nearest and dearest intercourse with him my panting spirit
cannot stay. Blessed Lord Jesus, be with me, reveal thyself, and abide
with me all night, so that when I awake I may be still with thee. I
note that the dove brought in her mouth an olive branch plucked off,
the memorial of the past day, and a prophecy of the future. Have I no
pleasing record to bring home? No pledge and earnest of lovingkindness
yet to come? Yes, my Lord, I present thee my grateful acknowledgments
for tender mercies which have been new every morning and fresh every
evening; and now, I pray thee, put forth thy hand and take thy dove
into thy bosom.

My Utmost For His Highest : "But It Is Hardly Credible That One Could Be So Positively Ignorant!"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 29, 2008

BUT IT IS HARDLY CREDIBLE THAT ONE COULD BE SO POSITIVELY IGNORANT!

Who art Thou, Lord?

Acts 26:15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ac+26:15&sr=1

"The Lord spake thus to me with a strong hand." There is no escape
when Our Lord speaks, He always comes with an arrestment of the
understanding. Has the voice of God come to you directly? If it has,
you cannot mistake the intimate insistence with which it has spoken
to you in the language you know best, not through your ears, but
through your circumstances.

God has to destroy our determined confidence in our own convictions.
"I know this is what I should do" - and suddenly the voice of God
speaks in a way that overwhelms us by revealing the depths of our
ignorance. We have shown our ignorance of Him in the very way we
determined to serve Him. We serve Jesus in a spirit that is not His,
we hurt Him by our advocacy for Him, we push His claims in the spirit
of the devil. Our words sound all right, but our spirit is that of an
enemy. "He rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit
ye are of." The spirit of our Lord in an advocate of His is described
in 1 Corinthians 13.

Have I been persecuting Jesus by a zealous determination to serve Him
in my own way? If I feel I have done my duty and yet have hurt Him in
doing it, I may be sure it was not my duty, because it has not
fostered the meek and quiet spirit, but the spirit of
self-satisfaction. We imagine that whatever is unpleasant is our
duty! Is that anything like the spirit of our Lord - "I delight to do
Thy will, O My God."

A SUFFICIENT ANSWER

Romans 7:21-8:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+7:21-8:1

Dear Father,

I delight in your law even though evil keeps planting suggestions
of rebellion in my mind. Help me to truly want to do what is right
in your sight, Father.

Thanks be to you, my God, through Jesus Christ my Lord! You have
provided a sufficient answer to the conflict within me - the life
and sacrifice of Jesus and his resurrection.

Thank you, Father, that there is now no condemnation for me
because I am in Christ!

In the name of Jesus I thank you and praise you for the mercy
shown to me and all your chosen ones. Hallelujah. Amen.

WJD! -- Disobedience Hinders God's Plan -- Mark 1:45

Disobedience Hinders God's Plan

The man left there and told all the people he saw that Jesus
had healed him. So the news about Jesus spread. And that is
why Jesus could not enter a town if people saw him. Jesus
stayed in places where people did not live. But people came
from all the towns to the places where Jesus was.

-- Mark 1:45 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Many times we think we know what is best. Unfortunately, some of those
times we actually disobey the clear teaching of the Lord because we
think we know a better way. Invariably, our attempts at doing good by
disobeying the Lord end up hindering his will. Certainly God can
overcome our misguided attempts at helping his cause for he is God and
he is sovereign and all-powerful. That's not the point. We need to obey
him even when we can't understand the reasons behind the command and
when we think we may know a better way to help and honor the Lord. The
man who had leprosy disobeyed Jesus and told those around him about
what Jesus had done. Instead of being able to fulfill God's purpose for
him by going to the cities and villages and proclaiming the word there
(see vs. 38-39), Jesus now has to stay in secluded spaces. People came
to him, but he was cut off from going to them. The man's disobedience,
though well-intentioned, interfered with Jesus' desire to fulfill his
mission. In the same way, our disobedience of the Lord today often
interferes with the Lord's desire to accomplish his mission in us!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, forgive me when I do not obey you. I know my disobedience
hinders my own growth and can also interfere with your work in building
the Kingdom and reaching the lost. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
