=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Root of the Problem, by Rubel Shelly

Have you heard that there are economic problems afoot in the United
States? Have you heard about people buying big, expensive houses with
almost no money down and going into foreclosure? Have you heard about
the subprime mortgage industry meltdown and its repercussions on Wall
Street?

Oh, of course you've heard all those things. You probably understand
them far better than I do, for I have no formal training in economics.
I just know about the gyrations in the stock market, the plunging value
of houses in the part of the country where I live, and the number of
people losing their jobs.

There is no way I can explain the complex economics of it. But we all
understand the ethical implications of what has happened. There is an
evil impulse that has percolated through human hearts from the
beginning of time. The Bible says: "[T]he love of money is a root of
all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10 NIV).

Our culture has addicted itself to leveraged debt. Big corporations,
small businesses, churches, homeowners, individuals -- all have been
guilty.

We are enticed by the sort of radio commercial I heard day before
yesterday. "Come to our big home furnishings sale this weekend. Fill
your house with beautiful new furniture. No down payment. No payments
for two full years. And we even pay the sales tax for you!" So we have
had people borrow 110% of the value of a new house, fill it with
furniture from stores like that one, and abandon both to foreclosure
and repossession. What's wrong with this picture?

Long ago and far away, thrift was a virtue.

Americans spent some 10.8 percent of our after-tax money on servicing
debt back in 1982. Today the average consumer must spend more than 14
percent of after-tax income just to stay current on household debt.

Long ago and far away, thrift was a virtue. On what must have been
another planet, saving was encouraged. And I've even heard of people
who actually refused to buy houses, luxury cars, and jewelry they
couldn't afford!

Stinginess is not virtuous. Tightfistedness is not a good thing.
Parsimony is not to be envied. But thrift, financial prudence, and
thinking about long-term consequences over short-term gratification
will have predictable outcomes: You are more likely to have money for
your own needs and with which to serve God by helping others.

The single driving force that will prohibit these good effects is the
same one that has put us in the mess we face: greed.

Morning & Evening -- John 19:16 and Isaiah 53:6

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, April 3, 2008

MORNING:

"They took Jesus, and led him away."
-- John 19:16

He had been all night in agony, he had spent the early morning at the
hall of Caiaphas, he had been hurried from Caiaphas to Pilate, from
Pilate to Herod, and from Herod back again to Pilate; he had,
therefore, but little strength left, and yet neither refreshment nor
rest were permitted him. They were eager for his blood, and therefore
led him out to die, loaded with the cross. O dolorous procession! Well
may Salem's daughters weep. My soul, do thou weep also.

What learn we here as we see our blessed Lord led forth? Do we not
perceive that truth which was set forth in shadow by the scapegoat? Did
not the high-priest bring the scapegoat, and put both his hands upon
its head, confessing the sins of the people, that thus those sins might
be laid upon the goat, and cease from the people? Then the goat was led
away by a fit man into the wilderness, and it carried away the sins of
the people, so that if they were sought for they could not be found.
Now we see Jesus brought before the priests and rulers, who pronounce
him guilty; God himself imputes our sins to him, "the Lord hath laid on
him the iniquity of us all;" "He was made sin for us;" and, as the
substitute for our guilt, bearing our sin upon his shoulders,
represented by the cross; we see the great Scapegoat led away by the
appointed officers of justice. Beloved, can you feel assured that he
carried your sin? As you look at the cross upon his shoulders, does it
represent your sin? There is one way by which you can tell whether he
carried your sin or not. Have you laid your hand upon his head,
confessed your sin, and trusted in him? Then your sin lies not on you;
it has all been transferred by blessed imputation to Christ, and he
bears it on his shoulder as a load heavier than the cross.

Let not the picture vanish till you have rejoiced in your own
deliverance, and adored the loving Redeemer upon whom your iniquities
were laid.

EVENING:

"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one
to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of
us all."
-- Isaiah 53:6

Here a confession of sin common to all the elect people of God. They
have all fallen, and therefore, in common chorus, they all say, from
the first who entered heaven to the last who shall enter there, "All we
like sheep have gone astray." The confession, while thus unanimous, is
also special and particular: "We have turned every one to his own way."
There is a peculiar sinfulness about every one of the individuals; all
are sinful, but each one with some special aggravation not found in his
fellow. It is the mark of genuine repentance that while it naturally
associates itself with other penitents, it also takes up a position of
loneliness. "We have turned every one to his own way," is a confession
that each man had sinned against light peculiar to himself, or sinned
with an aggravation which he could not perceive in others. This
confession is unreserved; there is not a word to detract from its
force, nor a syllable by way of excuse. The confession is a giving up
of all pleas of self-righteousness. It is the declaration of men who
are consciously guilty-guilty with aggravations, guilty without excuse:
they stand with their weapons of rebellion broken in pieces, and cry,
"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his
own way." Yet we hear no dolorous wailings attending this confession of
sin; for the next sentence makes it almost a song. "The Lord hath laid
on him the iniquity of us all." It is the most grievous sentence of the
three, but it overflows with comfort. Strange is it that where misery
was concentrated mercy reigned; where sorrow reached her climax weary
souls find rest. The Saviour bruised is the healing of bruised hearts.
See how the lowliest penitence gives place to assured confidence
through simply gazing at Christ on the cross!

My Utmost For His Highest : "If Thou Hadst Known!"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 3, 2008

IF THOU HADST KNOWN!

If thou hadst known ... in this thy day, the things
which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from
thine eyes.

Luke 19:42

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+19:42&sr=1

Jesus had entered into Jerusalem in triumph, the city was stirred to
its foundations; but a strange god was there, the pride of
Pharisaism; it was religious and upright, but a "whited sepulchre."

What is it that blinds me in this "my day"? Have I a strange god -
not a disgusting monster, but a disposition that rules me? More than
once God has brought me face to face with the strange god and I
thought I should have to yield, but I did not do it. I got through
the crisis by the skin of my teeth and I find myself in the
possession of the strange god still; I am blind to the things which
belong to my peace. It is an appalling thing that we can be in the
place where the Spirit of God should be getting at us unhinderedly,
and yet in crease our condemnation in God's sight.

"If thou hadst known" - God goes direct to the heart, with the tears
of Jesus behind. These words imply culpable responsibility; God holds
us responsible for what we do not see. "Now they are hid from thine
eyes" - because the disposition has never been yielded. The
unfathomable sadness of the "might have been!" God never opens doors
that have been closed. He opens other doors, but He reminds us that
there are doors which we have shut, doors which need never have been
shut, imaginations which need never have been sullied. Never be
afraid when God brings back the past. Let memory have its way. It is
a minister of God with its rebuke and chastisement and sorrow. God
will turn the "might have been" into a wonderful culture for the
future.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: God's Grace

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
God's Grace
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me... Ephesians 3:8 NIV

Paul understood God's grace. As a persecutor of God's precious children, Paul stood and watched the stoning of Christian martyr Stephen. He had made his goal to keep people away from learning of the gospel of Christ. Now, as Paul writes to the Ephesian church, Paul is a chief spokesman for God's Kingdom. He has been elevated to a position of prominence in the New Testament church. Deserving death for his actions, Paul is given prominence. Don't you think Paul understood grace?

A friend of mine once painted a picture of grace for me. He and his wife are unequalled in their display of God's love. Having one natural child, they unselfishly opened their home to six other children, whom they have, or are in the process of adopting. Their children, who instantly start to call them "Mom" and "Dad", come from various races and backgrounds. They are truly a "blended", Go d-made family.

One pair of the children were a brother and sister. Because of misbehavior of the boy, the two had been tossed from foster home to foster home all their lives. When my friends started the adoption process they would finally have a real home.

Over time the boy began once again to cause serious problems. The fear this time, however, was that the boy would cause physical harm to others in the household. My friends knew they had to do something to protect the other children. The boy was sent through evalualations which revealed a mild mental retardation. He was placed temporarily under the care of doctors in hopes that he can someday live a peaceful, normal life.

The picture of grace, however, came from the little girl. When she learned that her brother would leave the home, she assumed her position would remain as it had all her life. She assumed she would have to leave the house as well. She asked her adoptive parents "Do I have to lea ve too?" My loving friends quickly assured her that she is now home. She never has to leave again, no matter what! Do you think this little girl can understand grace? I would suggest that her concept of grace is far greater than mine will ever be.

Isn't that what God did for us all? Deserving nothing but condemnation, God, who is rich in mercy, made a way for you and I to live with Him throughout eternity. God made a way for sinners, like us, to come into His presence. God caused His Son to give up royalty, lower Himself to the point of death on the Cross, so that you and I might be saved. We become a part of the family of God, based completely on what Jesus did at Calvary!

Thank you dear sweet girl for helping me to better understand God's grace!

MY BODY A TEMPLE

1 Corinthians 6:12-13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+6:12-13

Dear Father, powerful and holy God,

Help me to understand that even though all things may be lawful
for me, all things are not helpful. Keep me from being enslaved by
anything.

You gave us stomachs for processing food and drink, and you gave
us sexuality for procreation and intimacy, but you did not mean our
bodies to be used for gluttony, drunkenness, or immorality!

Remind me every day, Lord, that my body is for you, and that you,
Lord, are for my body!

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Inner 3

Jesus let only Peter, James, and John the brother of James go
with him.

-- Mark 5:37 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus worked to grow people at all different levels of relationship and
maturity. He invested especially in 3 apostles who would take special
leadership in the early church -- Peter, James, and John. His work with
them is a reminder that as important as it is for leaders to help solve
problems, to minister to immediate needs, and to encourage all the
people of God, they must also set aside time to work with key
servant-leaders for the future. With whom are you investing yourself?
Who will carry on your ministry after you are no longer here? True
leadership invests in the future by investing in future leaders!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, give me the wisdom to know those around me with whom I should

Today's Verse : 1 Thessalonians 4:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 3, 2008

VERSE:
It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should
avoid sexual immorality...
-- 1 Thessalonians 4:3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+4:3

THOUGHT:
Sanctified surely does sound "churchy," doesn't it? It means to
be special, reserved for God's use and glory, and not common. We
are to be an uncommon people! This is especially true in steering
clear of sexual immorality. We're to stay far away from it,
honoring God with our bodies (cf. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20) while
celebrating God's plan for joyful sexual fulfillment in marriage
(Proverbs 5; 1 Corinthians 7:1-7).

PRAYER:
Father God, please protect and empower me as I seek to resist
sexual temptation in my sexually charged culture. I want to offer
myself to you as a holy sacrifice, pleasing to you and a blessing
to your people. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
