=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

People First, by Mike Barres

In 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay climbed to the top
of Mount Everest. Later, in May of 2006, mountaineers with dreams of
reaching the summit passed a dying climber in order to fulfill their
dreams. Sir Edmund Hillary was repeatedly asked what he would have done
had he been there. He normally did not engage in controversy, but in
the year before his death, he rebuked the climbers who had left the man
to die. "I think the whole attitude towards climbing Mount Everest has
become rather horrifying," Hillary said. "People just want to get to
the top."

On August 31, 2007, when asked about the 2006 incident where climbers
had to choose between realizing their dreams or saving the injured, Sir
Edmund leaned forward with fire in his eyes and rasped, "Save the man!"
(Quotes from article by David Mohan on Winning the Second Billion
Together web site.)

Often in the church of today, we think of big crowds, a lot of
excitement, and the expectation of a good show -- a mountain top
experience. Yet what is so simple, yet profound, is that the important
part of this church equation must be the people -- each person -- that
has come seeking Jesus.

If I had to state the core values of our church, they would simply be,
Jesus, the Bible, and people. We know that we can't have this "attract
the crowd" mentality alone. We have to think of individual people. We
need to reach more people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Statistics
have proven over and over that most people come to Jesus because of
personal contact with another believer. Someone cared enough to spend
time with a person, talk about their faith in Christ, and invite them
to church, an evangelistic event, or a Bible study about Jesus.

Jesus wants our lives to be about reaching people!

This outreach mentality means dong outreach intentionally.

Then the master said to the servant, "Go out into the highways and
hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled" (Luke
14:23 NKJV).

Paul warned the Corinthians "Come out from among them and be separate"
(2 Corinthians 6:17). Some, however, have taken this too far. I have
actually heard people say, "I don't spend time with anyone who isn't a
Christian." If this is true, then you aren't going or making disciples
(Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 14:23)! Be sure your circle of friends has some
who don't know the Lord. Have people that you are reaching out to with
the love of Jesus.

What are you doing to reach and disciple another person? Jesus wants
our lives to be about people, but this passion can't be general: it
must be specific. Think about one person who doesn't know Jesus. Think
about a person who is hurting, or alone. Think about one person who
used to attend your church, but doesn't now. It's not just about
crowds. It's not just about the mountain top experience. It's about
"people" -- one at a time, you and me reaching out to them in the name
of Jesus with the grace of Jesus.

Morning & Evening -- Ephesians 1:14 and Jeremiah 2:18

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday, July 20, 2008

MORNING:

"The earnest of our inheritance."
-- Ephesians 1:14

Oh! what enlightenment, what joys, what consolation, what delight of
heart is experienced by that man who has learned to feed on Jesus, and
on Jesus alone. Yet the realization which we have of Christ's
preciousness is, in this life, imperfect at the best. As an old writer
says, "'Tis but a taste!" We have tasted "that the Lord is gracious,"
but we do not yet know how good and gracious he is, although what we
know of his sweetness makes us long for more. We have enjoyed the
firstfruits of the Spirit, and they have set us hungering and thirsting
for the fulness of the heavenly vintage. We groan within ourselves,
waiting for the adoption. Here we are like Israel in the wilderness,
who had but one cluster from Eshcol, there we shall be in the vineyard.
Here we see the manna falling small, like coriander seed, but there
shall we eat the bread of heaven and the old corn of the kingdom. We
are but beginners now in spiritual education; for although we have
learned the first letters of the alphabet, we cannot read words yet,
much less can we put sentences together; but as one says, "He that has
been in heaven but five minutes, knows more than the general assembly
of divines on earth." We have many ungratified desires at present, but
soon every wish shall be satisfied; and all our powers shall find the
sweetest employment in that eternal world of joy. O Christian, antedate
heaven for a few years. Within a very little time thou shalt be rid of
all thy trials and thy troubles. Thine eyes now suffused with tears
shall weep no longer. Thou shalt gaze in ineffable rapture upon the
splendour of him who sits upon the throne. Nay, more, upon his throne
shalt thou sit. The triumph of his glory shall be shared by thee; his
crown, his joy, his paradise, these shall be thine, and thou shalt be
co-heir with him who is the heir of all things.

EVENING:

"And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink
the waters of Sihor?"
-- Jeremiah 2:18

By sundry miracles, by divers mercies, by strange deliverances Jehovah
had proved himself to be worthy of Israel's trust. Yet they broke down
the hedges with which God had enclosed them as a sacred garden; they
forsook their own true and living God, and followed after false gods.
Constantly did the Lord reprove them for this infatuation, and our text
contains one instance of God's expostulating with them, "What hast thou
to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of the muddy river?"-for
so it may be translated. "Why dost thou wander afar and leave thine own
cool stream from Lebanon? Why dost thou forsake Jerusalem to turn aside
to Noph and to Tahapanes? Why art thou so strangely set on mischief,
that thou canst not be content with the good and healthful, but wouldst
follow after that which is evil and deceitful?" Is there not here a
word of expostulation and warning to the Christian? O true believer,
called by grace and washed in the precious blood of Jesus, thou hast
tasted of better drink than the muddy river of this world's pleasure
can give thee; thou hast had fellowship with Christ; thou hast obtained
the joy of seeing Jesus, and leaning thine head upon his bosom. Do the
trifles, the songs, the honours, the merriment of this earth content
thee after that? Hast thou eaten the bread of angels, and canst thou
live on husks? Good Rutherford once said, "I have tasted of Christ's
own manna, and it hath put my mouth out of taste for the brown bread of
this world's joys." Methinks it should be so with thee. If thou art
wandering after the waters of Egypt, O return quickly to the one living
fountain: the waters of Sihor may be sweet to the Egyptians, but they
will prove only bitterness to thee. What hast thou to do with them?
Jesus asks thee this question this evening-what wilt thou answer him?

My Utmost For His Highest : "Dependent On God's Presence"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 20, 2008

DEPENDENT ON GOD'S PRESENCE

They that wait upon the Lord ... shall walk and not
faint.

Isaiah 40:31
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+40:31&sr=1

There is no thrill in walking; it is the test of all the stable
qualities. To "walk and not faint" is the highest reach possible for
strength. The word "walk" is used in the Bible to express the
character - "John looking on Jesus as He walked, said, Behold the
Lamb of God!" There is never any thing abstract in the Bible, it is
always vivid and real. God does not say - Be spiritual, but - "Walk
before Me."

When we are in an unhealthy state physically or emotionally, we
always want thrills. In the physical domain this will lead to
counterfeiting the Holy Ghost; in the emotional life it leads to in
ordinate affection and the destruction of morality; and in the
spiritual domain if we insist on getting thrills, on mounting up with
wings, it will end in the destruction of spirituality.

The reality of God's presence is not dependent on any place, but only
dependent upon the determination to set the Lord always before us.
Our problems come when we refuse to bank on the reality of His
presence. The experience the Psalmist speaks of - "Therefore will we
not fear, though . . ." will be ours when once we are based on
Reality, not the consciousness of God's presence but the reality of
it - Why, He has been here all the time!

At critical moments it is necessary to ask guidance, but it ought to
be unnecessary to be saying always - "O Lord, direct me here, and
there." Of course He will! If our common-sense decisions are not His
order, He will press through them and check; then we must be quiet
and wait for the direction of His presence.

Praying with Paul : "God's Will: Sanctification"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S WILL: SANCTIFICATION

1 Thessalonians 4:1-7
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+4:1-7

Dear Father, sanctifier of families,

Help us to learn how we ought to live and how we ought to please
you. Help us give greater attention and effort to this. Your will
for us is our sanctification, so enable us to abstain from all
immorality.

Many people around us glorify and romanticize lust. Help us to
reject this way of looking at things. Guide believers into
marriages of holiness and honor, giving themselves to each other in
spiritual union with Christ along with the joining of personalities
and bodies.

Help our marriages to be established as the gathering of two in
your name. Help our families to be your church in miniature. Help
every follower of yours respect the marriage relationship of others
and defraud no one in this matter.

You have not called us to uncleanness, but holiness. Thank you,
Father, for this high calling. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- So Hard -- Mark 10:23-25

So Hard

Then Jesus looked at his followers and said to them, "It will
be very hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God!"
The followers were amazed at what Jesus said. But Jesus said
again, "My children, it is very hard to enter the kingdom of
God! And it will be very hard for rich people to enter the
kingdom of God! It would be easier for a camel to go through
the eye of a needle!"

-- Mark 10:23-25 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
As the disciples processed the information they had seen and heard in
Jesus' interchange with the young man who went away sorrowfully (see
the previous verses), they were shocked. Being on the poorer end of the
economic scale, they assumed that the richer folks would have a better
chance of making it into heaven. Jesus told them the exact opposite was
true -- it would be harder for those who were rich to enter the Kingdom
of God. This must be a sober warning to us. Most of us with access to a
computer are so much better off financially than the majority of the
world's population. Yet we often focus on what we lack rather than what
God has given us to use to bless others and honor him. We must not let
ourselves become possessed by our possessions and our desire for them.
They turn our hearts away from God and become idols which replace God
in our lives.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, bless me with wisdom, generosity, and a passion for your work
as I seek to use "my" financial and material blessings to honor you and
bring others closer to you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Ecclesiastes 7:20

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 20, 2008

VERSE:
There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and
never sins.
-- Ecclesiastes 7:20
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ecclesiastes+7:20

THOUGHT:
Yep, we're all broken, flawed, and tainted. Or, at least that is
what we were (cf. 1 Cor. 6:9-11). Praise God, because of his grace
and the work of Jesus, we can stand before God holy, without
blemish, and free from accusation (Col. 1:22).

PRAYER:
Forgiving Father and Holy God, thank you for redeeming me from
my mortal and sinful ways by the sacrifice of Jesus. Thank you for
empowering me to become more like him by the power of your Holy
Spirit. Thank you for making me through grace what I could never be
through my own efforts. Thank you, dear God, for saving me from my
sin, ransoming me from my guilt, and redeeming me to share in your
glory. In Jesus name I praise you. Amen.
