=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Christian Nation?, by Rubel Shelly

We are in a major political season. Even if you were to try, you could
not avoid the primary coverage on TV, the water-cooler debates about
the various candidates, and the upcoming appeals for your vote in a
general election.

One of the things that unsettle me a bit during seasons such as this
one is when someone speaks of America as a "Christian nation." Is it?
Was it? Should it be? On all counts, the answer is no.

Although even those people who say they want it otherwise would admit
that the United States is not a Christian nation, they sometimes claim
it once was and that it was founded to be such. Our country's founding
fathers were, at best, Deists. They certainly did not envision a
culture where religion would have privilege of place in public life. It
would be permitted and protected as a personal right among free people.
It would not, however, be "established" or otherwise promoted, defined,
or made compulsory by the government.

It seems to me that a Christian view of history and life in society
would protest the idea of a state in which the unique features of
Christian theology, lifestyle, and worship were written into law. In
the several instances where that happened, it has not had a happy
result. Spreading and impressing religion through force quickly becomes
fanaticism and persecution.

Would it not be a violation of the Golden Rule, in fact, to create a
culture in which persons who did not share Christian faith and values
were required either to observe them or to show deference to them? If
the shoe were on the other foot, would you want to live in a Muslim,
Buddhist, or atheistic culture and be required to observe or show
deference to their ideologies? Of course not!

The point of this is not to say that Christians should be disinterested
in or uninvolved with politics. It is to say that we should be involved
in the system as "salt" and "light" persons. We should serve the public
good and protect the rights of others. We should be particularly
sensitive to the weak, marginalized, and minorities. America is not a
Christian nation, but Christians should always be among the best
citizens in any nation where they may happen to live.

Whatever your political leanings, be wary of anyone in this political
season who seeks to manipulate you with religion. Look askance at any
candidate who begins to use religion as a "political football." And
turn a deaf ear to the fanatical souls from whatever quarter who say or
imply their views are God's mandates.

"Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so
we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble
contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live" (1
Timothy 2:2-3 MSG).

Morning & Evening -- 1 John 4:13 and Job 14:14

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

MORNING:

"We dwell in him."
-- 1 John 4:13

Do you want a house for your soul? Do you ask, "What is the purchase?"
It is something less than proud human nature will like to give. It is
without money and without price. Ah! you would like to pay a
respectable rent! You would love to do something to win Christ? Then
you cannot have the house, for it is "without price." Will you take my
Master's house on a lease for all eternity, with nothing to pay for it,
nothing but the ground-rent of loving and serving him for ever? Will
you take Jesus and "dwell in him?" See, this house is furnished with
all you want, it is filled with riches more than you will spend as long
as you live. Here you can have intimate communion with Christ and feast
on his love; here are tables well-stored with food for you to live on
for ever; in it, when weary, you can find rest with Jesus; and from it
you can look out and see heaven itself. Will you have the house? Ah! if
you are houseless, you will say, "I should like to have the house; but
may I have it?" Yes; there is the key-the key is, "Come to Jesus."
"But," you say, "I am too shabby for such a house." Never mind; there
are garments inside. If you feel guilty and condemned, come; and though
the house is too good for you, Christ will make you good enough for the
house by-and-by. He will wash you and cleanse you, and you will yet be
able to sing, "We dwell in him." Believer: thrice happy art thou to
have such a dwelling-place! Greatly privileged thou art, for thou hast
a "strong habitation" in which thou art ever safe. And "dwelling in
him," thou hast not only a perfect and secure house, but an everlasting
one. When this world shall have melted like a dream, our house shall
live, and stand more imperishable than marble, more solid than granite,
self-existent as God, for it is God himself-"We dwell in him."

EVENING:

"All the days of my appointed time will I wait."
-- Job 14:14

A little stay on earth will make heaven more heavenly. Nothing makes
rest so sweet as toil; nothing renders security so pleasant as exposure
to alarms. The bitter quassia cups of earth will give a relish to the
new wine which sparkles in the golden bowls of glory. Our battered
armour and scarred countenances will render more illustrious our
victory above, when we are welcomed to the seats of those who have
overcome the world. We should not have full fellowship with Christ if
we did not for awhile sojourn below, for he was baptized with a baptism
of suffering among men, and we must be baptized with the same if we
would share his kingdom. Fellowship with Christ is so honourable that
the sorest sorrow is a light price by which to procure it. Another
reason for our lingering here is for the good of others. We would not
wish to enter heaven till our work is done, and it may be that we are
yet ordained to minister light to souls benighted in the wilderness of
sin. Our prolonged stay here is doubtless for God's glory. A tried
saint, like a well-cut diamond, glitters much in the King's crown.
Nothing reflects so much honour on a workman as a protracted and severe
trial of his work, and its triumphant endurance of the ordeal without
giving way in any part. We are God's workmanship, in whom he will be
glorified by our afflictions. It is for the honour of Jesus that we
endure the trial of our faith with sacred joy. Let each man surrender
his own longings to the glory of Jesus, and feel, "If my lying in the
dust would elevate my Lord by so much as an inch, let me still lie
among the pots of earth. If to live on earth for ever would make my
Lord more glorious, it should be my heaven to be shut out of heaven."
Our time is fixed and settled by eternal decree. Let us not be anxious
about it, but wait with patience till the gates of pearl shall open.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Liberty On The Abyss Of The Gospel"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 6, 2008

LIBERTY ON THE ABYSS OF THE GOSPEL

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ
hath made us free.

Galatians 5:1

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ga+5:1&sr=1

A spiritually minded man will never come to you with the demand -
"Believe this and that;" but with the demand that you square your
life with the standards of Jesus. We are not asked to believe the
Bible, but to believe the One Whom the Bible reveals (cf. John
5:39-40). We are called to present liberty of conscience, not liberty
of view. If we are free with the liberty of Christ, others will be
brought into that same liberty - the liberty of realizing the
dominance of Jesus Christ.

Always keep your life measured by the standards of Jesus. Bow your
neck to His yoke alone, and to no other yoke whatever; and be careful
to see that you never bind a yoke on others that is not placed by
Jesus Christ. It takes God a long time to get us out of the way of
thinking that unless everyone sees as we do, they must be wrong. That
is never God's view. There is only one liberty, the liberty of Jesus
at work in our conscience enabling us to do what is right.

Don't get impatient, remember how God dealt with you - with patience
and with gentleness; but never water down the truth of God. Let it
have its way and never apologize for it. Jesus said, "Go and make
disciples," not "make converts to your opinions."

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Slimy Pit

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Slimy Pit
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
But He took note of their distress when He heard their cry; for their sake He remembered His covenant and out of His great love He relented. Psalm 106:44-45 NIV

The wages of sin is death!

I thought I would remind you of that truth from Romans 3:23. You do remember it, don't you? Oh, yes, we like to remember the whole verse, don't we? The wages of sin is death, BUT the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ! That sounds better to me too!

What if the first were all that were true? Can you imagine where we would be if God held us accountable for our sin? Would we last a day? When I consider my life, and some of the mistakes I have made, if my sins were not hidden in the blood of Christ there would be no hope for my soul! If I were to compare much of my life, especially the hidden thoughts within my heart at times, I would seem more like the devil than like God. Am I alone here?

Yet, God is not keeping a record of my sins. He sees me not for my sinfulness, but for my righteousness through Christ. He sees the potential He has for me. He has relented from sending calamity in my life, which I fully deserve, and chosen to send me grace. All I did was believe that Jesus is the Son of God, that He lived a sinless life, died on an old rugged cross, and rose from the grave so that if I accept Him and make Him Lord of my life I will be saved! And I have! I believe it with all my heart!

Imagine the darkness of be seperated from God. Imagine never knowing His love or forgiveness. Imagine not having God as your guide; the path of life. Folks, I can't; I don't want to imagine such a thing!

Jesus heard me from the bottom of the slimy pit and He reached deep down to pull me up into His loving arms! I am a child of God! My life is no longer cursed with the sting of death, but is being renewed day by day into His likeness.

And one day, maybe very soon, I will see my Maker face to face! Oh, w hat a day, glorious day, that will be!

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

LOOK TO THE END

1 Corinthians 15:26

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:26

Dear Father, destroyer of every enemy,

Help me to look to the outcome, to the end of things, when Christ
will deliver the kingdom to you after destroying every ruler, every
authority, and every power.

Enable me to keep my eyes on his victory, for he must reign until
he has put all enemies under his feet.

Motivate me to focus on the time when even the last enemy, Death
itself, will be destroyed by our Lord.

In his name I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- The Touch of His Hand -- Mark 7:31-32

The Touch of His Hand

Then Jesus left the area around Tyre and went through Sidon.
Jesus went to Lake Galilee. Jesus went through the area of
the Ten Towns. While he was there, some people brought a man
to him. This man was deaf and could not talk. The people
begged Jesus to put his hand on the man {to heal him}.

-- Mark 7:31-32 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus' reputation as a miracle worker is now driving his ministry. He
is well known as a healer in Galilee, the region of Tyre and Sidon, and
also Decapolis (the area of Ten Towns). Jesus can no longer operate in
secrecy. It seems as if everyone has heard of him. However, as Mark
will show in subsequent verses, the issue of Jesus' concern has to do
with the perception of the people. How can he call them to deeper
discipleship if they see him only as a personal miracle worker? Jesus
will re-assert his concern that people really know him as he wants to
be known. This will mean conflict and misunderstanding in the following
episodes in which we find Jesus. Yet despite this concern, he
consistently shows personal, tender, and compassionate concern for the
individuals in need while trying to keep his ministry from becoming a
traveling healing show.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, with so many demands on my time, please help me to not cave
into the demands of others to be the person they want me to be. I want
to please you. At the same time, dear Father, please help me deal
personally and compassionately with people as your Son did. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Deuteronomy 5:6-7

VERSE:
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of
the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me."
-- Deuteronomy 5:6-7

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Deuteronomy+5:6-7

THOUGHT:
God is Sovereign, all-powerful, and without rival. So it is
absolutely amazing that he repeatedly chooses to bless us with his
grace before he calls us to worship and obedience. In most other
religions, their gods demand adherence, sacrifice, and obedience
before their favor is acquired. But the One True and Living God
offers grace and then calls us to obedience. Not only does he have
the right to ask us to have no other gods, he is worthy of being
our only God because of his demonstrated love and his incomparable
glory!

PRAYER:
Almighty God, you are worthy of all honor, worship, and praise.
I want my heart to always be reverent of your glory and
appreciative of your grace. Please don't let me outlive my love and
allegiance to you. I pray this in Jesus name with all my love and
respect. Amen.
