Today's Verse : Isaiah 41:10-11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 26, 2009

VERSE:
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am
your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you
with my righteous right hand. All who rage against you will surely
be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing
and perish.
-- Isaiah 41:10-11
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Isaiah+41:10-11

THOUGHT:
Not only does God's blessing rest on us, his presence goes with
us. We cannot ever be in a place where he is not with us (see Psalm
139). His presence and power will uphold us and strengthen us. No
matter what may happen in and to our physical bodies or our
physical worlds, in Jesus, God has given us the ultimate triumph
over every enemy and all wickedness. Even Jesus' doubters and
enemies will worship our Lord and kneel at his feet and will
recognize that our faith is not only appropriate, but it is
victorious. (cf. 1 Thess. 1)

PRAYER:
Thank you, dear Father! You are not only the God of the heavens,
but you are also my God. You know me and care about me. You hear my
cries for help and mercy. You share my struggles and burdens.
Please deliver me from every enemy, both physical and spiritual,
and give me boldness to stand firm in my faith in you. In Jesus'
name I ask this. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Unfailing Love

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Unfailing Love
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until He comes and showers righteousness upon you. Hosea 10:12 NIV

As I read the Scriptures, a few things are very clear. (I have capitalized the main point to make them easy to find.)

First, GOD WANTS HIS PEOPLE TO SEEK HIM. From the beginning of time, God has been calling His greatest creation into fellowship with Him. Before a man ever seeks God, God has first sought after man.

Occasionally, I get a Sunday afternoon nap. Often I sleep while my wife reads a book. Sometimes I wake to find her staring over me. At this point she has tired of reading and ready for me to pay her some attention. I like that feeling, because I know she loves me, but it also reminds me of how God waits for me to look up to Him and pay Him some attention. God is still seeking time with His children.

Second, I see from Go d's Word that if ever man earnestly seeks God, GOD IS EASILY FOUND. Remember the story of the boy Jesus where His parents could not find Him for a short time. Mary and Joseph found Him in the temple, learning from the temple leaders. When questioned, Jesus responded, Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house? God desires that same attitude in our hearts today. I have never known anyone who genuinely searched for God who didn't find Him, because God is always waiting that we may call on Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you.

Third, once we find God, HE WILL DESIRE TO MAKE A CHANGE IN OUR LIVES. God's design for us is to be righteous. He wants us to have the mind of Christ so that we might receive the full blessings of fellowship with Him. Being perfectly Holy, God cannot accept sin any sin. He wants to clean us up and mold us into the image of His Son. He wants to turn over the unplowed ground and make it fertile enough to bear good fruit. He want s to change us so we may better experience Him and all of His glory.

Dear Christian friends, it is time once again to seek the LORD!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Taste Test, by Tim Archer

I like to try new foods. When I travel to another country, I'm always
interested in sampling the local fare. If I have a chance to eat
something that other people eat and like, I want to take that
opportunity. I'm a natural-born taste tester.

I know other people who are exactly the opposite. One friend traveled
to another country on his honeymoon and ate every meal at McDonald's.
Another always wants to know the ingredients of a dish before he takes
a bite, trying to judge beforehand if he wants to risk experiencing the
unknown. The worst case I've known was a woman who lived overseas and
told me, "I don't invite the locals to eat at my house, because then
they'd invite me, and I might have to eat something I don't like."
Needless to say, her stay in that country was short and unhappy.

We can't know about something unless we try it.

While I hope you're the kind of person who is adventuresome in their
eating, I really hope that you are the kind of person who keeps an open
mind regarding God and what he can do for you. In the book of Psalms in
the Bible, we can read, "Taste and see that the Lord is good" (Psalms
34:8). That's a taste test that I know you should do. Don't rely on
what other people tell you about God. Don't even rely on what I tell
you about God. Lay aside preconceived notions and taste God. Try his
plan for you. God can give you meaning in your life, provide you hope
in the midst of despair, and show you a lifestyle that you can be proud
of. But you've got to taste him. You've got to give God's way a try.
Only then can you know if God is good or not.

Not everyone knows how to savor God, how to experience his presence in
their life. If you don't know where to begin, I'd like to help. Write
to me at tim@hopeforlife.org or leave a comment on our blog at
www.hopeforlife.org. Don't be one of those who rejects what they
haven't even tasted. "Taste and see that the Lord is good." You won't
regret giving his way a try.

Are you presently experiencing a new life? God's word says, "if anyone

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 3:7 and Jonah 1:3

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

MORNING:

"The wrath to come."
-- Matthew 3:7

It is pleasant to pass over a country after a storm has spent itself;
to smell the freshness of the herbs after the rain has passed away, and
to note the drops while they glisten like purest diamonds in the
sunlight. That is the position of a Christian. He is going through a
land where the storm has spent itself upon his Saviour's head, and if
there be a few drops of sorrow falling, they distil from clouds of
mercy, and Jesus cheers him by the assurance that they are not for his
destruction. But how terrible is it to witness the approach of a
tempest: to note the forewarnings of the storm; to mark the birds of
heaven as they droop their wings; to see the cattle as they lay their
heads low in terror; to discern the face of the sky as it groweth
black, and look to the sun which shineth not, and the heavens which are
angry and frowning! How terrible to await the dread advance of a
hurricane-such as occurs, sometimes, in the tropics-to wait in terrible
apprehension till the wind shall rush forth in fury, tearing up trees
from their roots, forcing rocks from their pedestals, and hurling down
all the dwelling-places of man! And yet, sinner, this is your present
position. No hot drops have as yet fallen, but a shower of fire is
coming. No terrible winds howl around you, but God's tempest is
gathering its dread artillery. As yet the water-floods are dammed up by
mercy, but the flood-gates shall soon be opened: the thunderbolts of
God are yet in his storehouse, but lo! the tempest hastens, and how
awful shall that moment be when God, robed in vengeance, shall march
forth in fury! Where, where, where, O sinner, wilt thou hide thy head,
or whither wilt thou flee? O that the hand of mercy may now lead you to
Christ! He is freely set before you in the gospel: his riven side is
the rock of shelter. Thou knowest thy need of him; believe in him, cast
thyself upon him, and then the fury shall be overpast for ever.

EVENING:

"But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of
the Lord, and went down to Joppa."
-- Jonah 1:3

Instead of going to Nineveh to preach the Word, as God bade him, Jonah
disliked the work, and went down to Joppa to escape from it. There are
occasions when God's servants shrink from duty. But what is the
consequence? What did Jonah lose by his conduct? He lost the presence
and comfortable enjoyment of God's love. When we serve our Lord Jesus
as believers should do, our God is with us; and though we have the
whole world against us, if we have God with us, what does it matter?
But the moment we start back, and seek our own inventions, we are at
sea without a pilot. Then may we bitterly lament and groan out, "O my
God, where hast thou gone? How could I have been so foolish as to shun
thy service, and in this way to lose all the bright shinings of thy
face? This is a price too high. Let me return to my allegiance, that I
may rejoice in thy presence." In the next place, Jonah lost all peace
of mind. Sin soon destroys a believer's comfort. It is the poisonous
upas tree, from whose leaves distil deadly drops which destroy the life
of joy and peace. Jonah lost everything upon which he might have drawn
for comfort in any other case. He could not plead the promise of divine
protection, for he was not in God's ways; he could not say, "Lord, I
meet with these difficulties in the discharge of my duty, therefore
help me through them." He was reaping his own deeds; he was filled with
his own ways. Christian, do not play the Jonah, unless you wish to have
all the waves and the billows rolling over your head. You will find in
the long run that it is far harder to shun the work and will of God
than to at once yield yourself to it. Jonah lost his time, for he had
to go to Nineveh after all. It is hard to contend with God; let us
yield ourselves at once.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Destitution Of Service"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 25, 2009

THE DESTITUTION OF SERVICE

Though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be
loved.

2 Corinthians 12:15
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+12:15&sr=1

Natural love expects some return, but Paul says - I do not care
whether you love me or not, I am willing to destitute myself
completely, not merely for your sakes, but that I may get you to God.
"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was
rich, yet for your sakes He became poor." Paul's idea of service is
exactly along that line - I do not care with what extravagance I
spend myself, and I will do it gladly. It was a joyful thing to Paul.

The ecclesiastical idea of a servant of God is not Jesus Christ's
idea. His idea is that we serve Him by being the servants of other
men. Jesus Christ out-socialists the socialists. He says that in His
Kingdom he that is greatest shall be the servant of all. The real
test of the saint is not preaching the gospel, but washing disciples'
feet, that is, doing the things that do not count in the actual
estimate of men but count everything in the estimate of God. Paul
delighted to spend him self out for God's interests in other people,
and he did not care what it cost. We come in with our economical
notions - "Suppose God wants me to go there - what about the salary?
What about the climate? How shall I be looked after? A man must
consider these things." All that is an indication that we are serving
God with a reserve. The apostle Paul had no reserve. Paul focuses
Jesus Christ's idea of a New Testament saint in his life, viz.: not
one who proclaims the Gospel merely, but one who becomes broken bread
and poured out wine in the hands of Jesus Christ for other lives.

Frank Viola and George Barna come to the startling conclusion that most

SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY

Romans 13:9
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+13:9

Dear Father, generous giver,

Love sees needs and shares resources. How lacking I am in this
regard. Please forgive me and make me better. Give a spirit of
generosity not only to me, but also to my wife, my children, and my
whole extended family - also to my spiritual family, your church.
Help all of us to be giving people, because you are a giving God.
Move us to serve a needy world.

I praise you and thank you for all your mercies. You are so
bountiful in your gifts. I love you, good and gracious God. I love
your Son. I love your Spirit. I love your people. I love the lost.
My prayer is to love you and them more.

In the name of Jesus and with the Spirit's help, I ask these
things. Amen.

WJD! -- Shock! -- Matthew 5:29-30

Shock!

"If your right eye makes you sin, then take it out and throw
it away. It is better to lose one part of your body than to
have your whole body thrown into hell. If your right hand
makes you sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better to
lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go
into hell."

-- Matthew 5:29-30 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Although treated as an antiquated concept in much of Western society,
sin is very much a concern to Jesus. Sin is dangerous because it harms
us in our walk with God. Sin is dangerous because, through us, it can
cause others to sin. Sin is dangerous because our sin directly hurts
others. Sin is disastrous because it separates us from God. Jesus
wanted to get his disciples' attention. He wanted us to know that sin
is horrid and dangerous. So he uses language that is best described as
hyperbole to shock us into realizing that we must deal with sin in our
lives. We must deal with it seriously and get rid of it. Jesus
elsewhere emphasizes that sin is what comes from the heart and causes
the actions on the outside. It seems to me unwise to think he is
speaking literally here since he goes to great lengths to emphasize
that mere external changes don't create lasting change in us. What is
needed is an internal change that works itself out into the external
lifestyle. Just because God is gracious doesn't mean he takes sin
lightly. We must never presume upon grace and use it as an excuse to
keep falling back into the same old sinful failures. Jesus wants us to
deal with the sin in our lives today.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and righteous Father, I do not want to take my own sin lightly.
Neither do I want to let it defeat me. Please empower me to put to
death the misdeeds of the body as you promised. Please help me keep
from taking my sin lackadaisically. In Jesus' name. Amen.
