=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Parable of the Pencil, by Steve Ridgell

Someone asked me the other day if I could remember my first sermon. I
can. I was fourteen years old and spoke at the Hickory Grove church of
Christ in Arkansas. I preached on The Parable of the Pencil. I can even
remember most of the points I made.

Pencils come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Just like people. No
matter what they look like on the outside, they all have one thing
inside them that is the same: the lead core. Just like we all have a
soul.

Pencils are made to write. That is their purpose. That purpose is only
accomplished when there is a guiding hand around the pencil. We also
were made for a purpose that is accomplished with the help of a guiding
hand.

Pencils have erasers in case of mistakes. As Christians, God allows us
to "erase" our mistakes. Pencils need a sharp point and we need to
remain sharp in our spiritual lives.

You may be wondering by now what is the point of this article. Is it
about starting to preach when young? Is it to show how we grow up as
Christians so that my sermons have more depth now? Is it to make a
point about pencils and Jesus?

Actually, it is to help me remember how to view the world. I still see
parables and applications about Christian living in pencils, cars,
televisions, pets, and sports. It is a natural process. Try it. Think
about what you learn about God from everyday things. I enjoyed
remembering that first sermon, and I want to keep that same
perspective.

Spiritual lessons are everywhere we look. Am I looking?

I want to see lessons about God in everything I do in this life. That's
what Jesus did. He saw spiritual application in birds, farming,
fishing, and family life. I love being in a relationship with God that
is so intense I see him everywhere and in everything. It is a great
life.

You too can have that life. Write me at steve@hopeforlife.org.

Morning & Evening -- Romans 8:17 and Isaiah 40:11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

MORNING:

"Joint heirs with Christ."
-- Romans 8:17

The boundless realms of his Father's universe are Christ's by
prescriptive right. As "heir of all things," he is the sole proprietor
of the vast creation of God, and he has admitted us to claim the whole
as ours, by virtue of that deed of joint-heir-ship which the Lord hath
ratified with his chosen people. The golden streets of paradise, the
pearly gates, the river of life, the transcendent bliss, and the
unutterable glory, are, by our blessed Lord, made over to us for our
everlasting possession. All that he has he shares with his people. The
crown royal he has placed upon the head of his Church, appointing her a
kingdom, and calling her sons a royal priesthood, a generation of
priests and kings. He uncrowned himself that we might have a coronation
of glory; he would not sit upon his own throne until he had procured a
place upon it for all who overcome by his blood. Crown the head and the
whole body shares the honour. Behold here the reward of every Christian
conqueror! Christ's throne, crown, sceptre, palace, treasure, robes,
heritage, are yours. Far superior to the jealousy, selfishness, and
greed, which admit of no participation of their advantages, Christ
deems his happiness completed by his people sharing it. "The glory
which thou gavest me have I given them." "These things have I spoken
unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be
full." The smiles of his Father are all the sweeter to him, because his
people share them. The honours of his kingdom are more pleasing,
because his people appear with him in glory. More valuable to him are
his conquests, since they have taught his people to overcome. He
delights in his throne, because on it there is a place for them. He
rejoices in his royal robes, since over them his skirts are spread. He
delights the more in his joy, because he calls them to enter into it.

EVENING:

"He shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his
bosom."
-- Isaiah 40:11

Who is he of whom such gracious words are spoken? He is THE GOOD
SHEPHERD. Why doth he carry the lambs in his bosom? Because He hath a
tender heart, and any weakness at once melts his heart. The sighs, the
ignorance, the feebleness of the little ones of his flock draw forth
his compassion. It is his office, as a faithful High Priest, to
consider the weak. Besides, he purchased them with blood, they are his
property: he must and will care for that which cost him so dear. Then
he is responsible for each lamb, bound by covenant engagements not to
lose one. Moreover, they are all a part of his glory and reward.

But how may we understand the expression, "He will carry them"?
Sometimes he carries them by not permitting them to endure much trial.
Providence deals tenderly with them. Often they are "carried" by being
filled with an unusual degree of love, so that they bear up and stand
fast. Though their knowledge may not be deep, they have great sweetness
in what they do know. Frequently he "carries" them by giving them a
very simple faith, which takes the promise just as it stands, and
believingly runs with every trouble straight to Jesus. The simplicity
of their faith gives them an unusual degree of confidence, which
carries them above the world.

"He carries the lambs in his bosom." Here is boundless affection. Would
he put them in his bosom if he did not love them much? Here is tender
nearness: so near are they, that they could not possibly be nearer.
Here is hallowed familiarity: there are precious love-passages between
Christ and his weak ones. Here is perfect safety: in his bosom who can
hurt them? They must hurt the Shepherd first. Here is perfect rest and
sweetest comfort. Surely we are not sufficiently sensible of the
infinite tenderness of Jesus!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Habit Of Enjoying The Disagreeable"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 14, 2008

THE HABIT OF ENJOYING THE DISAGREEABLE

That life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our
mortal flesh.

2 Corinthians 4:10

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2co+4:10&sr=1

We have to form habits to express what God's grace has done in us. It
is not a question of being saved from hell, but of being saved in
order to manifest the life of the Son of God in our mortal flesh, and
it is the disagreeable things which make us exhibit whether or not we
are manifesting His life. Do I manifest the essential sweetness of
the Son of God, or the essential irritation of "myself" apart from
Him? The only thing that will enable me to enjoy the disagreeable is
the keen enthusiasm of letting the life of the Son of God manifest
itself in me. No matter how disagreeable a thing may be, say - "Lord,
I am delighted to obey Thee in this matter," and instantly the Son of
God will press to the front, and there will be manifested in my human
life that which glorifies Jesus.

There must be no debate. The moment you obey the light, the Son of
God presses through you in that particular; but if you debate you
grieve the Spirit of God. You must keep yourself fit to let the life
of the Son of God be manifested, and you cannot keep yourself fit if
you give way to self-pity. Our circumstances are the means of
manifesting how wonderfully perfect and extraordinarily pure the Son
of God is. The thing that ought to make the heart beat is a new way
of manifesting the Son of God. It is one thing to choose the
disagreeable, and another thing to go into the disagreeable by God's
engineering. If God puts you there, He is amply sufficient.

Keep your soul fit to manifest the life of the Son of God. Never live
on memories; let the word of God be always living and active in you.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Serving

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Serving
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again. 2 Corinthians 5:15 NIV

Why do you serve Christ? Who are you trying to please with the way you live your life?

I must confess. There was a time when I enjoyed receiving recognition from my service for Christ. I was teaching a large Sunday School class, which continued to grow. Because I was fairly young, people thought I had achieved some exceptional accomplishments. I liked the attention. My serving became an effort to obtain more recognition. I was captivated with pride in myself. The Lord took me through a process of revealing the sin of pride in my life. As a result, I spent a year teaching a class of two. Even today, maybe especially today, I have to be on guard against the devils attempts to get me to serve out of selfish ambition.

Are you expecting something in return for your service to Christ, other than just the sheer joy of serving your Savior? I can share with you from personal experience that the greatest satisfaction in serving comes from a heart that serves out of love. Can I advise you to drop the religious activities and try a relationship with Jesus? He doesnt need your service. He wants you to serve Him because you love Him. He wants you to share your heart, as He shared His heart with you.

Christ died for us so that we would no longer live for ourselves, but for Him who died for us. Christ died for us so that we might glorify Him as we live for Him! Does this describe your life today?

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

HOLY SHARING

1 Corinthians 16:13-20

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+16:13-20

Dear Father,

In watchfulness, may I stand firm in faith, be courageous, and be
strong. Let everything I do be done in love. Help me to subject
myself to those in your church who have devoted themselves to
serving all the saints and to refreshing the spirits of your
servants. May I be a true fellow worker and sincere laborer in your
vineyard, always extending joyous greetings and sincere blessings
to brothers and sisters in Christ.

Most of all, help me to love the Lord Jesus Christ with all my
heart and soul. If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be
accursed. Maranatha! Lord Jesus, come. Come now in spiritual
presence. Come finally in visible manifestation! Amen.

May the love and the grace of the Lord Jesus, in whose name I
pray, be with us for ever and ever. Amen.

Prove Yourself

The Pharisees came to Jesus and asked him questions. They
wanted to test Jesus. So they asked Jesus to do a miracle to
show that he was from God.

-- Mark 8:11 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Seeking hearts in Jesus' day could see proof in honest observation.
Some who were not seeking saw Jesus as God's Son as well. However,
those who "came to argue with him" and who were "testing him to see if
he was from God" could not see. One miracle, another sign, and yet
another display of power would not be enough for them to believe. So
much of our faith is tied to our own hearts. Are we seeking for truth?
Are we seeking God? Do we yearn for what is really life? These are the
first crucial questions for us as we seek to not only know, but to
believe, in Jesus.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I believe, but I want to believe more strongly and more
completely. I don't want my faith to be shallow -- just a mere
emotional cloud that is here today and gone tomorrow. Guide my heart
and my mind as I seek to know truth, your truth, about who you are and
what you want of me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Amos 5:14

May 14, 2008

VERSE:
Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God
Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is.
-- Amos 5:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Amos+5:14

THOUGHT:
Many illicit and evil groups have claimed to have God on their
side. Horrific things have been done under the disguise of a
"Christian" movement. Jesus, however, told us we could recognize
people by their fruit. Those who seek good and abhor evil and those
who practice justice and mercy are the ones who have God with them.
Let's make sure our claim of God's presence is matched by the
presence of God's character in our lives!

PRAYER:
Almighty God and loving Father, thank you for your presence in
my life. Please forgive me when I let sin and selfishness crowd you
out and bring reproach to your name. Empower me with your Holy
Spirit to live as your holy child while displaying your righteous
character to the world. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
