Defeating the Subtleties of the Sadducess

Defeating the Subtleties of the Sadducess
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bible Verses~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 20:27 And some of the Sadducees, who say there is no
resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him, (28) Saying,
Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If anyone's brother has a wife and
dies, and this one is childless, his brother should take the
wife and raise up seed to his brother. (29) There were then
seven brothers. And the first took a wife and died childless;
(30) And the second; (31) And the third took her; and similarly
the seven also did not leave children and died. (32) Finally
the woman also died. (33) In the resurrection, therefore, which
one's wife does the woman become? For the seven had her as
wife. (34) And Jesus said to them, The sons of this age marry
and are given in marriage, (35) But those who are counted
worthy to obtain that age and the resurrection from the dead
neither marry nor are given in marriage; (36) For neither can
they die anymore, for they are equal to angels, and they are
sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. (37) But that the
dead are raised, even Moses disclosed in the section concerning
the bush, when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God
of Isaac and the God of Jacob. (38) Now He is not the God of
the dead, but of the living, for to Him all men are living.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Words of Ministry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 20:27-38 the Man-Savior was examined by the Sadducees. Verse
27 says, "And some of the Sadducees, who say there is no
resurrection, came to Him and questioned Him." They went on to
present to the Lord a case of a man who died leaving his wife
childless. Here [vv 34] the Lord indicates that marriage is
something of this age. But those who are worthy of the coming
age and of the resurrection of the dead will be equal to
angels, and there will be no marriage among them. No doubt, the
Sadducees never imagined that there would be such an age, an
age of resurrection.

Since God is the God of the living and is called the God of
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, this indicates that the dead
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will be resurrected. Otherwise, God
would be the God of the dead. But the fact that He is the God
of the living implies that one day Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
will be resurrected. From this we see that the divine title--
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob-
implies the truth of resurrection.

In the Lord's answer to the Sadducees we see His wisdom not
only in answering their subtle question but also in
understanding the depths of God's Word. It takes wisdom to
understand the depths of the divine title. The Man-Savior
certainly knew the Word of God. Unlike the Sadducees, who were
very superficial, the Lord had the wisdom to penetrate into the
depths of the holy Word.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

I Could Be Content if Only..., by Steve Ridgell

"Don't worry. I made sure your rental has cruise control. After all,
it's a really boring drive." That's what the clerk at the desk told me.
The strange thing about it was this was a drive to a preaching
appointment in central Florida. I thought the ride was beautiful. There
were gorgeous trees everywhere. For a preacher from West Texas, I was
in sensory overload. How could anyone think it would have been a boring
drive? Boy, if I lived in that part of the world I would never, ever
take that scenery for granted.

Now where I live is a different matter. It is flat and there aren't
many trees at all. Oh sure, some people rant and rave that they have
never seen sunsets as beautiful as those in West Texas, and…

I was doing the same thing as the clerk in Florida: taking for granted
the beauty around me. I wonder if we do that in other areas of our
lives. Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fence? And
do my neighbors think that when they look at my yard? The truth is that
most of life seems the same. Unless you are willing to move to a
different part of the world every two or three years you will have the
same scenery. Do I really have to have new scenery, new clothes, a new
house, a new job, a new mate, a new "look", and a new dog to make life
fun and exciting?

It would be so wonderful to be content with what I have, no matter what
the circumstances. How happy would I be if I learned to treasure and
appreciate the things I have every day?

How happy would I be if I learned to treasure and appreciate the things
I have every day?

Morning & Evening -- 1 Samuel 27:1 and Isaiah 40:11

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

MORNING:

"And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by
the hand of Saul."
-- 1 Samuel 27:1

The thought of David's heart at this time was a false thought, because
he certainly had no ground for thinking that God's anointing him by
Samuel was intended to be left as an empty unmeaning act. On no one
occasion had the Lord deserted his servant; he had been placed in
perilous positions very often, but not one instance had occurred in
which divine interposition had not delivered him. The trials to which
he had been exposed had been varied; they had not assumed one form
only, but many-yet in every case he who sent the trial had also
graciously ordained a way of escape. David could not put his finger
upon any entry in his diary, and say of it, "Here is evidence that the
Lord will forsake me," for the entire tenor of his past life proved the
very reverse. He should have argued from what God had done for him,
that God would be his defender still. But is it not just in the same
way that we doubt God's help? Is it not mistrust without a cause? Have
we ever had the shadow of a reason to doubt our Father's goodness? Have
not his lovingkindnesses been marvellous? Has he once failed to justify
our trust? Ah, no! our God has not left us at any time. We have had
dark nights, but the star of love has shone forth amid the blackness;
we have been in stern conflicts, but over our head he has held aloft
the shield of our defence. We have gone through many trials, but never
to our detriment, always to our advantage; and the conclusion from our
past experience is, that he who has been with us in six troubles, will
not forsake us in the seventh. What we have known of our faithful God,
proves that he will keep us to the end. Let us not, then, reason
contrary to evidence. How can we ever be so ungenerous as to doubt our
God? Lord, throw down the Jezebel of our unbelief, and let the dogs
devour it.

EVENING:

"He shall gather the lambs with his arm."
-- Isaiah 40:11

Our good Shepherd has in his flock a variety of experiences, some are
strong in the Lord, and others are weak in faith, but he is impartial
in his care for all his sheep, and the weakest lamb is as dear to him
as the most advanced of the flock. Lambs are wont to lag behind, prone
to wander, and apt to grow weary, but from all the danger of these
infirmities the Shepherd protects them with his arm of power. He finds
new-born souls, like young lambs, ready to perish-he nourishes them
till life becomes vigorous; he finds weak minds ready to faint and
die-he consoles them and renews their strength. All the little ones he
gathers, for it is not the will of our heavenly Father that one of them
should perish. What a quick eye he must have to see them all! What a
tender heart to care for them all! What a far- reaching and potent arm,
to gather them all! In his lifetime on earth he was a great gatherer of
the weaker sort, and now that he dwells in heaven, his loving heart
yearns towards the meek and contrite, the timid and feeble, the fearful
and fainting here below. How gently did he gather me to himself, to his
truth, to his blood, to his love, to his church! With what effectual
grace did he compel me to come to himself! Since my first conversion,
how frequently has he restored me from my wanderings, and once again
folded me within the circle of his everlasting arm! The best of all is,
that he does it all himself personally, not delegating the task of
love, but condescending himself to rescue and preserve his most
unworthy servant. How shall I love him enough or serve him worthily? I
would fain make his name great unto the ends of the earth, but what can
my feebleness do for him? Great Shepherd, add to thy mercies this one
other, a heart to love thee more truly as I ought.

Mustard Seed Thought: God's Promises Eight

He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God, who has called you into fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. 1 Corinthians 1:8-9 NIV

God will keep you strong! Now that's good news, isn't it?

What, you don't feel strong today? Did I catch you on one of your "weaker" days? Do you feel like the proverbial "rug has been pulled out from under you"? Like all your "strength is gone"? I'm quite convinced that some of you are feeling that way today. If not today, some day you will. How do I know? Really two ways. One, I'm an observer of life, so I've seen it time and time again. Two, it's happened to me more times than I can remember. Sure, today I feel pretty strong, but tomorrow another storm may develop that makes me feel like a mealy mouse again.

But, God promises to "keep you strong". What do I do with that Scripture?

First, this verse is about position. Positionally, if you are a Christian, then you are "seated with Christ in the Heavenly realms". (Ephesians 2:6) You are a stranger here on earth, because your citizenship is in Heaven. (Philippians 3:20) You are a new creation! (2 Corinthians 5:17) You are stronger when you are at your weakest. (2 Corinthians 12:10) You are positionally strong in the Lord. He is living His strength through you.

Second, this verse is about perspective. God told Joshua, when he was about to lead thousands of people into the Promise Land, to "be strong and courageous". (Joshua 1:9) Paul tells us to "be strong" and to "stand firm" in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 10:13, Ephesians 6:10) Paul indicates what God told Joshua, we must keep the proper perspective on strength. Where does your help come from? Your help comes from the Lord, the Maker of Heaven and Earth. (Psalm 121:1) I don't know how you see it, but a God who can make the stars and set them in place, form mountains and oceans, create thousands of species of plants and animals, and breathe life into a man, all in six days, has to be pretty powerful! You think? This is the same God who wants to give you strength.

So, you can remain strong, because you already are positionally, if you will keep the proper perspective.

Dear Lord, help us today to remember our important position in Christ Jesus, and to remember our strength comes from the Lord. May we exhibit that strength today!

My Utmost For His Highest : "Greater Works"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 17, 2007

GREATER WORKS

And greater works than these shall he do; because I go
unto My Father.

John 14:12

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+14:12&sr=1

Prayer does not fit us for the greater works; prayer is the greater
work. We think of prayer as a common-sense exercise of our higher
powers in order to prepare us for God's work. In the teaching of
Jesus Christ prayer is the working of the miracle of Redemption in me
which produces the miracle of Redemption in others by the power of
God. The way fruit remains is by prayer, but remember it is prayer
based on the agony of Redemption, not on my agony. Only a child gets
prayer answered; a wise man does not.

Prayer is the battle; it is a matter of indifference where you are.
Whichever way God engineers circumstances, the duty is to pray. Never
allow the thought - "I am of no use where I am;" because you
certainly can be of no use where you are not. Wherever God has dumped
you down in circumstances pray, ejaculate to Him all the time.
"Whatsoever ye ask in My name, that will I do." We won't pray unless
we get thrills, that is the intensest form of spiritual selfishness.
We have to labour along the line of God's direction, and He says
pray. "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send
forth labourers into His harvest."

There is nothing thrilling about a labouring man's work, but it is
the labouring man who makes the conceptions of the genius possible;
and it is the labouring saint who makes the conceptions of his Master
possible. You labour at prayer and results happen all the time from
His standpoint. What an astonishment it will be to find, when the
veil is lifted, the souls that have been reaped by you, simply
because you had been in the habit of taking your orders from Jesus
Christ.

NO LONGER STRANGERS

Ephesians 2:17-22

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Ephesians+2:17-22

Dear Father, friend of the far and the near,

I am so thankful that Christ came and preached peace to those who
were far off and to those who were near, so that we both can have
access to you in the one Spirit, that we can enjoy peace together.
It is so wonderful that we who are not Jews no longer have to be
strangers and foreigners.

How good of you, Father, that we now can be citizens with the
saints, that we can be members of your household, Christ's church.

What a wonderful church! You built it on the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
in whom the whole structure is joined and grows together into a
holy temple in the Lord.

Thank you that in him even I personally can be built into it in
order to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Signs of the End? -- Luke 17:37

Signs of the End?

The followers asked Jesus, "Where will this be, Lord?" Jesus
answered, "People can always find a dead body by looking for
the vultures."

-- Luke 17:37 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
There will be signs that these things (mentioned in the previous verses
discussing Jesus' return) are about to happen. The sign of vultures in
the sky alert the onlooker that something has died nearby. Well, what
are these signs? Luke 17 reveals the signs Jesus has given: 1) Some
will say he has already returned; 2) the Son of Man (Jesus) will have
suffered terribly (i.e., gone to the cross); 3) people will be going
about their daily lives. Well, if those are Jesus' signs, then it
sounds like just about any ordinary time after Jesus has been
crucified. Yes, I believe that is the point. We must be ready all the
time at any time. From the day of Pentecost when the first people
became Christians until today, we have been in the last days. Jesus
stands close to the edge of time and when the Father says "Now!" Jesus
will visibly and undeniably step back into our world and claim his
disciples and take them home to his Father in heaven. Throughout this
discussion, Jesus has repeatedly warned his disciples to always be
ready. He says it again in this passage in a slightly different way,
but with an equally clear message: "My coming is always near. Any time
that looks like a normal day could be my time to come!"

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, make my heart ready for the time of Jesus' return. Give me
passion each day to live for you and your Kingdom as if it were my last
day. Make me ready for the coming of my Lord. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.

Today's Verse : Mark 9:41

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

October 17, 2007

VERSE:
I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my
name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his
reward.
-- Mark 9:41

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Mark+9:41

THOUGHT:
This simple and clear passage cuts two ways: First, we are
blessed when we bless God's children, even if the blessing is
simple. Second, we can rejoice when others do the simplest things
to bless us in Jesus' name, because we receive the kindness and
grace of others and because God blesses that kindness with his
overwhelming grace. Bottom line -- let's live to be a blessing!
When we do, God is blessed. We are blessed. We bless others. In
addition, when others are gracious to us, God has also promised to
bless them. God pours his blessings out on all of us. In God's
miraculous economy, the more we bless each other, the more
blessings there are for everyone!

PRAYER:
Gracious and loving Father, please use me this week to be a
blessing to everyone around me. But this week, dear Father, please
lead me into the life of someone who desperately needs your grace.
Please give me discernment to see them when you bring them across
my path. Give me courage to reach out and bless them. Keep them on
my heart and help me as I seek to be a long-term blessing to them.
In Jesus' name I ask for your help and grace to use this
opportunity for your glory. Amen.
