=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Real Spring Cleaning, by Ann Voskamp

[This article ran last week, but because of server problems, many of
you missed it. For an introduction to Anne, please see the editor's
note at the end of this article.]

What I caught began with an innocuous call, or so it seemed,
mid-morning on Monday. An insurance agent needs a digital photograph of
our geothermal heat pump by Friday, a formality for our file and his
job. Which compels Dutch Farmer on Monday evening to remove every boxed
up memory, Christmas wreath and invoice from the last 7 years out of
the storage room to begin reorganizing afresh so that aforementioned
agent will not injure himself getting his photo of said heat pump. I
join the late night lustrating.

Come Tuesday morning, I slip into the storage room to file a gift bag,
and am met with open floor, empty shelves -- space. Throughout the
course of the morning, I find several excuses to crack open the door,
just to steal a peek at the wonder of it all, and, now, in hindsight, I
think that in fact the wonder of it all was contagious, for by noon on
Tuesday I begin stripping down bookshelves, sorting Thorton Burgess,
G.A. Henty, Wilder, Montgomery, Dr. Seuss, Flaubert, Teale, Porter, and
Richard Scarry, discarding, purging, releasing, and reshelving. Which
leads to the rearranging of three desks, two children's tables, a
puzzle box, a piano, and 5 bookshelves. And so the dominoes continue to
fall, with the dividing up of toys, labeling of tins, arranging of
baskets.

I wake Wednesday morning, still feverish and deep in the throes of it,
and before breakfast, empty out our bedroom closet of corduroy shirts,
maternity swim suits, packages of ping pong balls. I fling overalls I
once wore to the zoo, bag skirts I wore with cowboy boots, and toss
cowboy boots I don't wear. I gather for the thrift store an old
suitcase I hauled around Quebec for three months when I was fourteen
and can't now zipper shut; but I write my name on the dust it wears and
smile and think of the memories. Gone too are pants that never did fit
in spite of all my wishing, a pair of shoes that pinched my little toes
red, a sweater that itched and irritated whenever I foolishly wore it.
And soon, through a tangle of clothes hangers and a knot of old ties,
it emerges: open floor, empty shelves -- space!

Calling shoes out from the shade of dresses, I align them on a shelf,
and they blink, adjusting to light of day. So I stand back. Stretch.
Breathe. Revel.

Dutch Farmer, in from the barn, searches me out and I seek his face,
reading for multiplied delight. And trip on this, "You put your shoes
on my shelf?" Your shelf? My mind scrambles: I sent the ping pong
balls, rolls of scotch tape, race car trophies, and batteries that
merely squatted there, and moved them all into rightful residences! I
reclaimed neglected territory! I enlarged our boundaries with the
removal of unnecessary tonnage! But my tongue lies, thankfully, barely,
still.

I mumble something unintelligible, collect an armful of clothes for the
thrift store, and retreat. But changing over the laundry, indignant
retorts roar through my frontal cortex, hardening heart arteries. I let
them.

Iron heart sharpens razor tongue.

I set out breakfast dishes, and this heart tail snaps and whips subtly,
quietly ... stingingly. "Are you planning to go with us into town this
afternoon?" he asks, buttering bagels.

Feeling less than buttery, I crack out a sharp "No!"

They eat, and I return to the closet. Another shuffle gives my shoes a
bruised home elsewhere. Mainly because I haul, rather unceremoniously,
my wedding dress, crinoline, veil, out of the closet and down to
capacious storage room. I flick out the light, close the door.

Grace is contagious and love a spacious, wide open place.

At the close of breakfast, and before we step out into the day, we pray
the day's Scripture. It's my turn, and I read: "Therefore as God's
chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians
3:12 NIV, emphasis added).

Is it normal to feel so conspicuously, startlingly, the unclogging of
one's arteries?

In my spring cleaning furor, how had I purged out the only attire
necessary? Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience. And
how was that I would pray this verse, this day, with this ugly, naked
heart? But He knew.

So come Wednesday at noon, a wedding dress once again anchors the
corner of the closet, he and I wear happy, sheepish, forgiveness, and
our shoes mingle intimately in the shadows of a top shelf.

And maybe this house, heart, is cleaned a bit deeper.

For grace is contagious and love a spacious, wide open place.

Lord, wash this heart clean.

Morning & Evening -- Luke 22:48 and John 3:13

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

MORNING:

"Betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss?"
-- Luke 22:48

"The kisses of an enemy are deceitful." Let me be on my guard when the
world puts on a loving face, for it will, if possible, betray me as it
did my Master, with a kiss. Whenever a man is about to stab religion,
he usually professes very great reverence for it. Let me beware of the
sleek-faced hypocrisy which is armour-bearer to heresy and infidelity.
Knowing the deceivableness of unrighteousness, let me be wise as a
serpent to detect and avoid the designs of the enemy. The young man,
void of understanding, was led astray by the kiss of the strange woman:
may my soul be so graciously instructed all this day, that "the much
fair speech" of the world may have no effect upon me. Holy Spirit, let
me not, a poor frail son of man, be betrayed with a kiss!

But what if I should be guilty of the same accursed sin as Judas, that
son of perdition? I have been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus;
I am a member of his visible Church; I sit at the communion table: all
these are so many kisses of my lips. Am I sincere in them? If not, I am
a base traitor. Do I live in the world as carelessly as others do, and
yet make a profession of being a follower of Jesus? Then I must expose
religion to ridicule, and lead men to speak evil of the holy name by
which I am called. Surely if I act thus inconsistently I am a Judas,
and it were better for me that I had never been born. Dare I hope that
I am clear in this matter? Then, O Lord, keep me so. O Lord, make me
sincere and true. Preserve me from every false way. Never let me betray
my Saviour. I do love thee, Jesus, and though I often grieve thee, yet
I would desire to abide faithful even unto death. O God, forbid that I
should be a high-soaring professor, and then fall at last into the lake
of fire, because I betrayed my Master with a kiss.

EVENING:

"The Son of man."
-- John 3:13

How constantly our Master used the title, the "Son of man!" If he had
chosen, he might always have spoken of himself as the Son of God, the
Everlasting Father, the Wonderful, the Counsellor, the Prince of Peace;
but behold the lowliness of Jesus! He prefers to call himself the Son
of man. Let us learn a lesson of humility from our Saviour; let us
never court great titles nor proud degrees. There is here, however, a
far sweeter thought. Jesus loved manhood so much, that he delighted to
honour it; and since it is a high honour, and indeed, the greatest
dignity of manhood, that Jesus is the Son of man, he is wont to display
this name, that he may as it were hang royal stars upon the breast of
manhood, and show forth the love of God to Abraham's seed. Son of
man-whenever he said that word, he shed a halo round the head of Adam's
children. Yet there is perhaps a more precious thought still. Jesus
Christ called himself the Son of man to express his oneness and
sympathy with his people. He thus reminds us that he is the one whom we
may approach without fear. As a man, we may take to him all our griefs
and troubles, for he knows them by experience; in that he himself hath
suffered as the "Son of man," he is able to succour and comfort us. All
hail, thou blessed Jesus! inasmuch as thou art evermore using the sweet
name which acknowledges that thou art a brother and a near kinsman, it
is to us a dear token of thy grace, thy humility, thy love.

"Oh see how Jesus trusts himself
Unto our childish love,
As though by his free ways with us
Our earnestness to prove!
His sacred name a common word
On earth he loves to hear;
There is no majesty in him
Which love may not come near."

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Haggai Two

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Haggai Two
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home I blew away. Why?" declares the Lord Almighty. "Because my house remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house." Haggai 1:9 NIV

Sometimes we wonder why we cannot get ahead. The Israelites felt likewise one time. In the days of the prophet Haggai, Israel no longer had a temple for the Lord. After Solomon's vast temple was destroyed, and since the people were in captivity, there was no effort to rebuild a temple for the Lord.

Now, don't misunderstand, God certainly didn't need the edifice to proclaim His glory. His glory is displayed all around. The Heavens declare the glory of God. Each morning when the sun rises and each evening when it sets, God is once again glorified for His creation. The birds who sing in my back yard lift their voices in praise to their Maker. The flowers bloom in brilliance of color all to signify the vastness of God's splendor.

So, God didn't then, and doesn't today, need a building to signify His supremacy. But, while God's people labored to build their own kingdoms, they had forgotten the Kingdom of God. They had failed to invest in the Heavenly things in lieu of putting their money and labor into instant, self-gratification. Sound familiar?

God said He wouldn't stand for it then, and, trust me on this, He won't stand for it today! God demands that His people give Him the recognition do His name. Let me ask you (and I am asking believers specifically), does your life glorify God? Would your checkbook testify to your love for the Lord? Would your calendar?

God wants you to worship and praise Him because of who He is! Does that identify with your life?

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Most Delicate Mission On Earth"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 25, 2008

THE MOST DELICATE MISSION ON EARTH

The friend of the Bridegroom.

John 3:29

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+3:29&sr=1

Goodness and purity ought never to attract attention to themselves,
they ought simply to be magnets to draw to Jesus Christ. If my
holiness is not drawing towards Him, it is not holiness of the right
order, but an influence that will awaken inordinate affection and
lead souls away into side-eddies. A beautiful saint may be a
hindrance if he does not present Jesus Christ but only what Christ
has done for him. He will leave the impression - "What a fine
character that man is!" That is not being a true friend of the
Bridegroom; I am increasing all the time, He is not.

In order to maintain this friendship and loyalty to the Bridegroom,
we have to be more careful of our moral and vital relationship to Him
than of any other thing, even of obedience. Sometimes there is
nothing to obey, the only thing to do is to maintain a vital
connection with Jesus Christ, to see that nothing interferes with
that. Only occasionally do we have to obey. When a crisis arises we
have to find out what God's will is, but the greater part of the life
is not conscious obedience but the maintenance of this relationship -
the friend of the Bridegroom. Christian work may be a means of
evading the soul's concentration on Jesus Christ. Instead of being
friends of the Bridegroom, we may become amateur providences, and may
work against Him whilst we use His weapons.

THE MEASURE OF GREATNESS

1 Corinthians 3:21-23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+3:21-23

Dear Father, kind and generous God,

Let us look for the imitation of Jesus in the lives of others, for
you have made this the measure of greatness. And even if we should
find it, let us give the glory to you, to whom it truly belongs!
For you are worthy!

Thank you that you don't pay us what you owe, but give us
everything freely! For all things are ours through your
grace-whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world, or life or
death, or things present or things future - everything is ours! And
we are Christ's, and Christ is yours!

Through him and you, we are wise, rich, beautiful and powerful,
and have the promise of living happily forevermore! How wonderful!

Thank you, Father. You are so generous and kind!

In the blessed name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Fear of Change -- Mark 5:16-17

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / WHAT JESUS DID! --

Fear of Change

Some people were there and saw what Jesus did. These people
told the other people what happened to the man that had the
demons living in him. And they also told about the pigs. Then
the people began to beg Jesus to leave their area.

-- Mark 5:16-17 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Most folks are afraid of change and anyone who has the power to change
them. Because the crowd couldn't explain how Jesus had power over the
man possessed by a legion of demons, they were afraid and they asked
him to leave. Unfortunately, we often do the same thing. Not so much by
overtly saying to Jesus, "Please leave me alone." No, we do it by
ignoring his presence, staying away from his Word, and associating with
people who help drown out the voice of Jesus in our hearts. Please,
don't turn Jesus away. Don't ask him to leave. Draw near to him. Seek
him. Follow him. And anticipate what he can do in your life!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Sovereign God of all creation, please make me more aware of the
nearness of Jesus. Help me to see the changes he is making in my heart
and in my life each day. I ask this in his name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today's KJV Verse : Daniel 3:25

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 25, 2008

VERSE:
He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the
midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the
fourth is like the Son of God.
-- Daniel 3:25

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Daniel+3:25&translation=kjv

THOUGHT:
I love the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from Daniel
3. Their faith is solid whether God chooses to save them from the
fire, or not. God not only saves them, but those who intended to
execute them become the key witnesses of their faith and God's
miraculous deliverance. They are not only sons of the One True God,
but they are also examples to all of us who are tempted to
compromise our faith to get along in a society that has lost all
respect for the Almighty God.

PRAYER:
Dear Father in heaven, please give me the same kind of faith
that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego demonstrated! When adversity,
persecution, ridicule, and ostracism come, I want my faith to stand
up to the test. Thank you, dear Father, for giving me the Bible,
which is my book of heroes who stood their ground and kept their
faith, especially under fire. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
