Mustard Seed Thoughts: Decisions Made Easier

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Decisions Made Easier
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
It is the Lord your God you must follow, and Him you must revere. Keep His commands and obey Him; serve Him and hold fast to Him. Deuteronomy 13:4 NIV

This verse is exactly what I am trying to teach my children... and myself!

We spend half our time in life, it sometimes seems, trying to decide who and what we should be. Which decision is best? Should I vote Democrat or Republican? Should I go to a state school or a private university? Should I be Baptist or Nazarene? Should I give to United Way or to Big Brothers and Big Sisters? Should I go to that movie or not? Do I trust that pastor (or devotional writer) or some other who seems to contradict?

Decisions. Who's right? Who's wrong? Whom should I follow? Who is telling me the truth? Whom can I trust?

S T O P ! Stop the chase! God has given us the answer! Here it is: FOLLOW HIM! If we will follow God and God alone, if we will put Him first, revering Him as all-sufficient in our lives, it is then that we will begin to find direction in our lives. If we will keep His commands and obey Him, serving Him faithfully, holding to the truth of His word, then we will find real peace in our lives.

God's will for us is right, good and pure! In Him we will find success in life. As we follow God, seeking Him with all our heart, we will begin to find the true meaning to the chaos in which we live. Decisions will become easier once we solicit answers from the Great I AM!

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, have a little fun and go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Only a Keystroke Away, by Russ Lawson

I was thinking about how our world has changed so quickly. Our lives
are so different from what they were for our parents or grandparents.
Of course they are especially different in the terms of electronic
devices. I remember reading that in the 1950's they were first
developing a working computer and it required the space of a small
home. Now I have a computer that fits into the space of my hand.

We look at time differently, as well. In our parents and grandparents
day, folks took more time with things in which we don't seem to place
the same level of importance. Mostly I'm thinking about personal
relationships. They took time to visit, to stop and talk with friends
when they met them unexpectedly. They visited their neighbors, shared
part of the latest batch of cookies they had just made, helped repair
that fence or paint the house. Today, our lives are ruled by how much
we can get done in the shortest amount of time and how long we can
continue doing it.

We plan our days and then work at the plan. Of course that is not all
bad. We are supposed to manage our lives wisely, aren't we? I do that
so it must be alright! Right? I generally spend part of my early
mornings corresponding and writing. However, I think that I may have
discovered that I've fallen into a trap. As I have been reviewing my
typical day lately, I've found myself far too often jotting off a quick
email note rather than picking up the phone and calling personally or
making a visit. It is more efficient to do this cyberspace-style, isn't
it? I can stay in contact with more people, over a greater distance, in
less time. So, I am a better manager, right? We are, after all, only a
keystroke away. That is what I told a friend recently.

Something is lost in all of this. It is the personal part of
relationships. There is something about the sound of the voice of my
friends or the clasp of a handshake that warms my heart. Yes, it feels
good to receive an email from a friend, but I feel more of a sense of
peace, a sense of warmth and encouragement, when we talk.

We need cyberspace and face-to-face communication.

I know that you are sitting at your computer reading this thought. You
are comfortable, you are protected, you are safe and spam filtered as
you sit in that chair and only a keystroke -- the delete button -- away
from removing anything you don't like. But, let me encourage you to
make some personal contact with someone today -- perhaps someone you
haven't talked with or visited with for far too long. You need the
contact. You both need the encouragement.

The writer of the book of Hebrews puts it this way:

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so
that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness" (Hebrews
3:13 NIV).

While I can't personally contact everyone who reads this, I can
encourage you to reach out and encourage someone in your own life -- in
a personal way that involves the sound of your voice and the touch of
your hand.

Morning & Evening -- Song of Solomon 2:8 and Ephesians 5:25

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, March 20, 2009

MORNING:

"My beloved."
-- Song of Solomon 2:8

This was a golden name which the ancient Church in her most joyous
moments was wont to give to the Anointed of the Lord. When the time of
the singing of birds was come, and the voice of the turtle was heard in
her land, her love-note was sweeter than either, as she sang, "My
beloved is mine and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies." Ever in her
song of songs doth she call him by that delightful name, "My beloved!"
Even in the long winter, when idolatry had withered the garden of the
Lord, her prophets found space to lay aside the burden of the Lord for
a little season, and to say, as Esaias did, "Now will I sing to my
well-beloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard." Though the
saints had never seen his face, though as yet he was not made flesh,
nor had dwelt among us, nor had man beheld his glory, yet he was the
consolation of Israel, the hope and joy of all the chosen, the
"beloved" of all those who were upright before the Most High. We, in
the summer days of the Church, are also wont to speak of Christ as the
best beloved of our soul, and to feel that he is very precious, the
"chiefest among ten thousand, and the altogether lovely." So true is it
that the Church loves Jesus, and claims him as her beloved, that the
apostle dares to defy the whole universe to separate her from the love
of Christ, and declares that neither persecutions, distress,
affliction, peril, or the sword have been able to do it; nay, he
joyously boasts, "In all these things we are more than conquerors
through him that loved us."

O that we knew more of thee, thou ever precious one!
"My sole possession is thy love;
In earth beneath, or heaven above,
I have no other store;
And though with fervent suit I pray,
And importune thee day by day,
I ask thee nothing more."

EVENING:

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the
church."
-- Ephesians 5:25

What a golden example Christ gives to his disciples! Few masters could
venture to say, "If you would practise my teaching, imitate my life;"
but as the life of Jesus is the exact transcript of perfect virtue, he
can point to himself as the paragon of holiness, as well as the teacher
of it. The Christian should take nothing short of Christ for his model.
Under no circumstances ought we to be content unless we reflect the
grace which was in him. As a husband, the Christian is to look upon the
portrait of Christ Jesus, and he is to paint according to that copy.
The true Christian is to be such a husband as Christ was to his church.
The love of a husband is special. The Lord Jesus cherishes for the
church a peculiar affection, which is set upon her above the rest of
mankind: "I pray for them, I pray not for the world." The elect church
is the favourite of heaven, the treasure of Christ, the crown of his
head, the bracelet of his arm, the breastplate of his heart, the very
centre and core of his love. A husband should love his wife with a
constant love, for thus Jesus loves his church. He does not vary in his
affection. He may change in his display of affection, but the affection
itself is still the same. A husband should love his wife with an
enduring love, for nothing "shall be able to separate us from the love
of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." A true husband loves his
wife with a hearty love, fervent and intense. It is not mere
lip-service. Ah! beloved, what more could Christ have done in proof of
his love than he has done? Jesus has a delighted love towards his
spouse: He prizes her affection, and delights in her with sweet
complacence. Believer, you wonder at Jesus' love; you admire it-are you
imitating it? In your domestic relationships is the rule and measure of
your love-"even as Christ loved the church?"

My Utmost For His Highest : "Friendship With God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 20, 2009

FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD

Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?

Genesis 18:17
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ge+18:17&sr=1

Its Delights. This chapter brings out the delight of real friendship
with God as compared with occasional feelings of His presence in
prayer. To be so much in contact with God that you never need to ask
Him to show you His will, is to be nearing the final stage of your
discipline in the life of faith. When you are rightly related to God,
it is a life of freedom and liberty and delight, you are God's will,
and all your common-sense decisions are His will for you unless He
checks. You decide things in perfect delightful friendship with God,
knowing that if your decisions are wrong He will always check; when
He checks, stop at once.

Its Difficulties. Why did Abraham stop praying when he did? He was
not intimate enough yet to go boldly on until God granted his desire,
there was something yet to be desired in his relationship to God.
Whenever we stop short in prayer and say - "Well, I don't know;
perhaps it is not God's will," there is still another stage to go. We
are not so intimately acquainted with God as Jesus was, and as He
wants us to be - "That they may be one even as we are one." Think of
the last thing you prayed about - were you devoted to your desire or
to God? Determined to get some gift of the Spirit or to get at God?
"Your Heavenly Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye
ask Him." The point of asking is that you may get to know God better.
"Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires
of thine heart." Keep praying in order to get a perfect understanding
of God Himself.

Praying with Paul : "Spiritual Discernment"

SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT

1 Corinthians 2:14-16
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+2:14-16

Dear Father, who gives us the mind of Christ,

The natural person cannot understand us or you, or what you are
doing in us, for these things are spiritually discerned, and he
cannot receive your gifts.

Natural people cannot judge us, but you enable us to judge
everything. "For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to
instruct him?" But we understand, for you have given us the very
mind of Christ!

How wonderful it is! How great and merciful you are to give us
this precious gift! I love you, Lord.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

In the name of Jesus I give you thanks for the supernatural wisdom
you have bestowed on us by reason of our faith. Amen.

Tomorrow

"So don't worry about tomorrow. Each day has enough trouble
of its own. Tomorrow will have its own worries."

-- Matthew 6:34 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
As we ponder these words of Jesus, we must recognize that worry and
planning ahead are different things. Jesus said that it is unreasonable
not to do some essential planning. (Luke 14:28-31) Still, most of us
have battled worry at some point in our lives. We go to bed with that
nagging concern about what will happen "tomorrow." (Clearly Jesus is
referring to worrying about what will happen in the future and not just
literally tomorrow.) It may be a conflict that troubles us. It may be a
mess at the office that must be confronted. It may be facing someone
who has hurt us or that we have hurt. It may be that financial doubt
about paying bills and having to face the note holders. Jesus wants us
to let go of our anxiety. We must live in the present moment. There are
too many opportunities we could miss today by worrying about what might
happen tomorrow. The Lord could come between now and tomorrow and all
our worry would have been silliness. The Lord may be at work in the
situation during today, in ways we could not foresee, and our problems
are not as insurmountable as they seem today. Or, even if the bad thing
were to happen, our worry will have needlessly stolen the joy out of
today. Let's make sure we fill up today with God's Kingdom priorities
and then we can deal with tomorrow's mess when, and if, it ever comes.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty and sustaining God, I believe tomorrow is in your hands, so I
will rest myself in your grace today as I seek to live for you. Please
open my eyes to see the opportunities you provide today so that I can
serve you and do your Kingdom work with focus, courage, and clarity. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Isaiah 41:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 20, 2009

VERSE:
"Who has stirred up this king from the east, who meets victory
at every step? Who, indeed, but the LORD? He gives him victory over
many nations and permits him to trample their kings underfoot. He
puts entire armies to the sword. He scatters them in the wind with
his bow. He chases them away and goes on safely, though he is
walking over unfamiliar ground. Who has done this and carried it
through, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the
LORD -- with the first of them and with the last -- I am he."
-- Isaiah 41:4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Isaiah+41:4

THOUGHT:
God is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. This is
great comfort for us. We don't have to choose another deity in the
course of our lives. We don't have to worry about our Father's
leaving us as prey for other gods. We don't have to worry about his
Word becoming obsolete or outdated. He will be with us always.

PRAYER:
Eternal Father, God of mercy and grace, thank you for your
faithfulness. You were faithful to your promises to Israel. You
were faithful in your promises to send a Messiah. You are faithful
to lead and guide me by your Spirit. You will faithfully bring me
into your presence at the return of the Lord Jesus. Thank you for
being my stable Rock and Refuge in times that are so unstable,
transient, and fickle. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
