Today's Verse : Colossians 1:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 9, 2008

VERSE:
Since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying
for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will
through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
-- Colossians 1:9

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+1:9

THOUGHT:
Paul wrote these words to the Christians at Colossae, but he had
never been there. Despite his lack of "in person" knowledge, he
ministered effectively to the Colossians. He prayed specifically
for them to better know God and his will for them. What a great
idea! Let's find a mission church (inner city, overseas, hostile
environment) and start praying consistently for that congregation,
asking God to help them know him and his will more perfectly.

PRAYER:
Holy and all powerful God, bless my church family with a deeper
knowledge and appreciation of your nature, character, and grace. In
addition, please bless ___ (add your mission church of choice) with
growth, health, and most of all, knowledge of you. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Doubt 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Doubt 2
Part 2 of 5 : Peter's Story of Walking on Water By: Ron Edmondson
Be merciful to those who doubt Jude 22 NIV

Yesterday we looked at the life of Peter, how that even a man of such great faith can have periods of doubt. Today we share another verse about doubt. May I suggest to you that doubt, by itself, is not a sin.

In the book of Jude, we are told to be merciful to those who doubt. Get it? God does provide mercy to doubters. When Jesus reached out His hand to Peter, He didn't scold Peter. He certainly didn't take away Peter's salvation. He gently reminded him that everything was going to be okay.

Doubting by the believer is a part of our human nature. We are still battling the flesh. We still witness the storms of life and they sometimes seem bigger than we can handle. Which is the point exactly, because they usually are! Christ didn't criticize Peter, because it gave Him the perfect opportunity to once again demostrate His grace to Peter. As He reached out His hand to grab Peter, and they returned to the boat, Peter and the other disciples declared, "Truly this is the Son of God"!

Oh, now don't get me wrong. God does want our faith. He wants us to decrease our doubts. Hebrews 11:6 says that "without faith it is impossible to please God". We can't just always doubt and never grow in our faith. And, most importantly, the one who never gets beyone their doubt and always questions Christ could not, in my opinion, be truly saved.

But, our doubts are a part of growing in the knowledge of the Lord. As we become more and more like Christ we will doubt less and less. Until then we continue to place our faith daily in Christ and Him alone, weathering the storms of life, not by ourselves, but by the hand of the Living God.

Perhaps today you can exchange your doubts for a stronger faith in God, knowing that He is always with you, wherever you go. Once again, I say to you, God is in control!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Snow Days, by Lisa Mikitarian

He spreads the snow like wool and scatters the frost like ashes (Psalm
147:16 TNIV).

Because I grew up on the west coast, I didn't experience a snow day
until I was married, had children, and was transplanted to the east
coast. In the Shenandoah Valley, I have discovered the gift of these
remarkable days.

Like Christ covering our sins, every defect in our town, in our
neighborhood, and in our yard is covered with a pristine blanket of
white wool. Is there anything to compare with the beauty of freshly
fallen snow?

I like the vacuum of sound that seems to accompany one of these days.
I've noticed an interval of time when life pauses -- everyone has
already stood in lines with their gallons of milk and their loaves of
bread. The snowplows have not yet rolled by and the shovels lean
against the house, waiting. The children, who ventured outside when it
first started coming down, are now inside -- also waiting -- wanting
the fluffy inches to accumulate. In this moment, it's as if our world
has been encapsulated in a giant snow globe and only the snow is
moving.

The result of this stillness is a feeling of freedom. Freedom from
school and work. Freedom from piano lessons and dental appointments.
Freedom from board meetings and choir practices. The activities may
even be enjoyable ones, but having an unexpected break feels
liberating. This freedom, though, extends beyond schedules. For a
moment, we seem to let go of the worries and tribulations of life we
may be facing and instead rest in the serenity before us.

May you have many snow days!

When I shared my feelings on snow with my husband, he said when life
with bills and illnesses and job worries becomes overwhelming, he
thinks about Christ and what he did for us and what it means for us.
Then, for a moment, he experiences the complete sense of freedom I was
describing.

Then the telephone will ring reporting the next crisis. But that moment
of pure peace helped him put life back into perspective and he is
recharged to handle whatever comes. "Well I do that, too," I told him,
somewhat taken aback. "Wow!" I thought, "my husband manufactures his
own snow days. He doesn't have to wait for the hundred-year blizzard to
feel free from the cares of this world. He could live in the Sahara
Desert and enjoy the benefits of a snow day."

This wintry season -- and all year long -- may you have many snow days
regardless of where you live or what the weatherman forecasts. May you
know the peace Christ offers all who believe and accept His words.

---------

Morning & Evening -- Exodus 28:38 and Song of Solomon 1:2

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

MORNING:

"The iniquity of the holy things."
-- Exodus 28:38

What a veil is lifted up by these words, and what a disclosure is made!
It will be humbling and profitable for us to pause awhile and see this
sad sight. The iniquities of our public worship, its hypocrisy,
formality, lukewarmness, irreverence, wandering of heart and
forgetfulness of God, what a full measure have we there! Our work for
the Lord, its emulation, selfishness, carelessness, slackness,
unbelief, what a mass of defilement is there! Our private devotions,
their laxity, coldness, neglect, sleepiness, and vanity, what a
mountain of dead earth is there! If we looked more carefully we should
find this iniquity to be far greater than appears at first sight. Dr.
Payson, writing to his brother, says, "My parish, as well as my heart,
very much resembles the garden of the sluggard; and what is worse, I
find that very many of my desires for the melioration of both, proceed
either from pride or vanity or indolence. I look at the weeds which
overspread my garden, and breathe out an earnest wish that they were
eradicated. But why? What prompts the wish? It may be that I may walk
out and say to myself, 'In what fine order is my garden kept!' This is
pride. Or, it may be that my neighbours may look over the wall and say,
'How finely your garden flourishes!' This is vanity. Or I may wish for
the destruction of the weeds, because I am weary of pulling them up.
This is indolence." So that even our desires after holiness may be
polluted by ill motives. Under the greenest sods worms hide themselves;
we need not look long to discover them. How cheering is the thought,
that when the High Priest bore the iniquity of the holy things he wore
upon his brow the words, "HOLINESS TO THE LORD:" and even so while
Jesus bears our sin, he presents before his Father's face not our
unholiness, but his own holiness. O for grace to view our great High
Priest by the eye of faith!

EVENING:

"Thy love is better than wine."
-- Song of Solomon 1:2

Nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship with Christ. He
has enjoyment as others have in the common mercies of life, he can be
glad both in God's gifts and God's works; but in all these separately,
yea, and in all of them added together, he doth not find such
substantial delight as in the matchless person of his Lord Jesus. He
has wine which no vineyard on earth ever yielded; he has bread which
all the corn-fields of Egypt could never bring forth. Where can such
sweetness be found as we have tasted in communion with our Beloved? In
our esteem, the joys of earth are little better than husks for swine
compared with Jesus, the heavenly manna. We would rather have one
mouthful of Christ's love, and a sip of his fellowship, than a whole
world full of carnal delights. What is the chaff to the wheat? What is
the sparkling paste to the true diamond? What is a dream to the
glorious reality? What is time's mirth, in its best trim, compared to
our Lord Jesus in his most despised estate? If you know anything of the
inner life, you will confess that our highest, purest, and most
enduring joys must be the fruit of the tree of life which is in the
midst of the Paradise of God. No spring yields such sweet water as that
well of God which was digged with the soldier's spear. All earthly
bliss is of the earth earthy, but the comforts of Christ's presence are
like himself, heavenly. We can review our communion with Jesus, and
find no regrets of emptiness therein; there are no dregs in this wine,
no dead flies in this ointment. The joy of the Lord is solid and
enduring. Vanity hath not looked upon it, but discretion and prudence
testify that it abideth the test of years, and is in time and in
eternity worthy to be called "the only true delight." For nourishment,
consolation, exhilaration, and refreshment, no wine can rival the love
of Jesus. Let us drink to the full this evening.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Does My Sacrifice Live?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 8, 2008

DOES MY SACRIFICE LIVE?

And Abraham built an altar . . and bound Isaac his son.

Genesis 22:9

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ge+22:9&sr=1

This incident is a picture of the blunder we make in thinking that
the final thing God wants of us is the sacrifice of death. what God
wants is the sac rifice through death which enables us to do what
Jesus did, viz., sacrifice our lives. Not - I am willing to go to
death with Thee, but - I am willing to be identified with Thy death
so that I may sacrifice my life to God. We seem to think that God
wants us to give up things! God purified Abraham from this blunder,
and the same discipline goes on in our lives. God nowhere tells us to
give up things for the sake of giving them up. He tells us to give
them up for the sake of the only thing worth having - viz., life with
Himself. It is a question of loosening the bands that hinder the
life, and immediately those bands are loosened by identification with
the death of Jesus, we enter into a relationship with God whereby we
can sacrifice our lives to Him.

It is of no value to God to give Him your life for death. He wants
you to be a "living sacrifice," to let Him have all your powers that
have been saved and sanctified through Jesus. This is the thing that
is acceptable to God.

Praying with Paul : "God's Righteous Judgment"

\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT

Romans 1:32

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+1:32

Dear Father, righteous judge,

Who could argue against your righteous judgment? Who would claim
that those who refuse to see truth should not be left in their
blindness? Though they know that those who pervert truth deserve to
die, they not only continue to practice perversion, they also
glorify it!

Holy God, your judgment is just! Have mercy on these derelict
people to chasten them with judgments that will bring them to
repentance. And dear Father, save all of your people, your holy
remnant, from the flood of filth and enmity toward you that
surrounds us every day!

Thank you, God, that your judgment is just, but thank you also
that your mercy is available to all.

Thank you for your remedy for sin and death! Only you, God, could
do this! It is in the name of Jesus and by his authority that we
have such boldness to come to you, asking these things according to
his will. Amen.

Split Open

While Jesus was coming up out of the water, he [John] saw the
sky open. The Holy Spirit came down to Jesus like a dove.

-- Mark 1:10 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Something dramatic, earthshaking, and eternally significant is
happening in Jesus' baptism. All who witnessed this event, and all of
us who read about it, can't escape the power and significance of this
moment. Heaven is opened. The distance between God in heaven and
mortals is collapsed. The Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove on
Jesus to show God's approval, blessing, and anointing of Jesus as his
Son, the King. Jesus' baptism is a turning point -- not just for Jesus,
but for us as well. Our baptism, though clearly not as dramatic as the
Lord's, is a turning point, too. We need to think about the
significance of both the Lord's baptism and our own.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I thank you for a clear marker in my past that designates the
turning point of my life. Jesus is my Lord. You are my Father. The
power of the Holy Spirit lives in me. I praise you and thank you for a
fresh start and the power to have a new beginning. Please help me share
this freshness of your grace with others. In Jesus' name. Amen.
