=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Cleaning Up Our Act, by Rubel Shelly

When I was in junior high, a lady offered me some tropical fish. When I
told my mother of the offer, she was willing. But we needed an
aquarium.

It was actually my mother's idea to be creative at that point. She
recalled an old-fashioned gas pump that was rusting in an open field.
Most of you aren't old enough to remember, but gasoline pumps used to
have big glass containers at the top. A manual lever pumped gas from
the underground tank into a glass cylinder. Then you put the hose into
your car's gas tank, and gravity did the rest.

Sure enough, the glass in the abandoned gas pump was unbroken. We asked
for and received permission to retrieve it. And the two of us set about
to create the perfect environment for our soon-to-arrive tropical fish.

Only when we got it home did we realize how nasty the tank was. But we
scrubbed and cleaned. Then we put in colored gravel, some plants, and
an aerator. I claimed the fish and put them in their new environment. A
nasty glass tank had become the ideal new home for seven beautiful and
delicate creatures.

They don't want to subject themselves to the same caustic process!

The next morning, two were belly-up. By the end of the day, two or
three more had died. And by the following morning, not one was still
alive. We knew we had done something wrong but had no idea what. So I
went back to the lady who had given them to us and told her with
embarrassment what had happened.

As I was explaining all our fuss and bother with creating just the
right aquarium environment, she interrupted and said she knew what the
trouble was. We had washed the tank with detergent, and that is an
absolute no-no when dealing with such delicate creatures. Our
uninformed efforts at trying to create something beautiful had killed
what we were trying to receive and showcase.

Sometimes we do a very similar thing in families, work environments, or
churches. In our zeal to clean up our lives or those of others, we use
caustic cleansers -- harsh criticism, nagging, condemnation, outbursts
of temper. We think we are doing right and defending decency. But our
harsh treatment of an immature child of God or fragile personality is
more than some souls can bear.

Churches are notorious for being so caustic with a neophyte's problem
with drugs or a family's breakup that the tender and still-in-formation
people involved die to faith from the treatment they receive. Then
people on the outside that see all the dead bodies floating to the
surface (reasonably!) decide they want nothing to do with church. They
don't want to subject themselves to the same caustic process they have
seen kill others.

Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the
time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so
that you may know how you ought to answer everyone (Colossians
4:5-6 NRS).

Morning & Evening -- Romans 8:28 and Numbers 32:6

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

MORNING:

"We know that all things work together for good to them that
love God."
-- Romans 8:28

Upon some points a believer is absolutely sure. He knows, for instance,
that God sits in the stern-sheets of the vessel when it rocks most. He
believes that an invisible hand is always on the world's tiller, and
that wherever providence may drift, Jehovah steers it. That re-assuring
knowledge prepares him for everything. He looks over the raging waters
and sees the spirit of Jesus treading the billows, and he hears a voice
saying, "It is I, be not afraid." He knows too that God is always wise,
and, knowing this, he is confident that there can be no accidents, no
mistakes; that nothing can occur which ought not to arise. He can say,
"If I should lose all I have, it is better that I should lose than
have, if God so wills: the worst calamity is the wisest and the kindest
thing that could befall to me if God ordains it." "We know that all
things work together for good to them that love God." The Christian
does not merely hold this as a theory, but he knows it as a matter of
fact. Everything has worked for good as yet; the poisonous drugs mixed
in fit proportions have worked the cure; the sharp cuts of the lancet
have cleansed out the proud flesh and facilitated the healing. Every
event as yet has worked out the most divinely blessed results; and so,
believing that God rules all, that he governs wisely, that he brings
good out of evil, the believer's heart is assured, and he is enabled
calmly to meet each trial as it comes. The believer can in the spirit
of true resignation pray, "Send me what thou wilt, my God, so long as
it comes from thee; never came there an ill portion from thy table to
any of thy children."

"Say not my soul, 'From whence can God relieve my care?'
Remember that Omnipotence has servants everywhere.
His method is sublime, his heart profoundly kind,
God never is before his time, and never is behind."

EVENING:

"Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?"
-- Numbers 32:6

Kindred has its obligations. The Reubenites and Gadites would have been
unbrotherly if they had claimed the land which had been conquered, and
had left the rest of the people to fight for their portions alone. We
have received much by means of the efforts and sufferings of the saints
in years gone by, and if we do not make some return to the church of
Christ by giving her our best energies, we are unworthy to be enrolled
in her ranks. Others are combating the errors of the age manfully, or
excavating perishing ones from amid the ruins of the fall, and if we
fold our hands in idleness we had need be warned, lest the curse of
Meroz fall upon us. The Master of the vineyard saith, "Why stand ye
here all the day idle?" What is the idler's excuse? Personal service of
Jesus becomes all the more the duty of all because it is cheerfully and
abundantly rendered by some. The toils of devoted missionaries and
fervent ministers shame us if we sit still in indolence. Shrinking from
trial is the temptation of those who are at ease in Zion: they would
fain escape the cross and yet wear the crown; to them the question for
this evening's meditation is very applicable. If the most precious are
tried in the fire, are we to escape the crucible? If the diamond must
be vexed upon the wheel, are we to be made perfect without suffering?
Who hath commanded the wind to cease from blowing because our bark is
on the deep? Why and wherefore should we be treated better than our
Lord? The firstborn felt the rod, and why not the younger brethren? It
is a cowardly pride which would choose a downy pillow and a silken
couch for a soldier of the cross. Wiser far is he who, being first
resigned to the divine will, groweth by the energy of grace to be
pleased with it, and so learns to gather lilies at the cross foot, and,
like Samson, to find honey in the lion.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: John-Like, 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
John-Like, 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: Matthew 11:4-5 NIV

Jesus wanted John the Baptist to have factual information, so He told Johns disciples to report what they heard and saw . He didnt want John to receive half truths. Im sure, since John was in prison, he would have been desperate for any information he could receive. He certainly would not have wanted false information, or information that would build up a false hope.

How are you at reporting the facts? There is a balance here that I want to explore. One person says I tell it like it is. Sometimes this leads to hurt feelings, anger, and even causes those closest to them to rebel at times. Another, perhaps not wanting to hurt feelings, chooses not to say anything, even when some information would be good. Still another is willing to share information, even if it is fabricated or unsubstantiated information. Of course, we call that gossip.

Jesus advise here is to share what you see and hear in love. Jesus, who is love, couldnt have shared it any other way. Everything He did was out of a seat of love.

As you share with others today, try to practice the style of Jesus. Share what you know to be true, but share it in love. You will help those who are hungry for information. In the Book of James, we are told that the tongue is a powerful force in our world, with the ability to build people up or tear people down. We must choose to use our words in ways that give God glory and promote His love to those around us.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Baffling Call Of God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 5, 2008

THE BAFFLING CALL OF GOD

And all things that are written by the prophets
concerning the Son of Man shall be accomplished ... And
they understood none of these things.

Luke 18:31,34
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+18:31,34&sr=1

God called Jesus Christ to what seemed unmitigated disaster. Jesus
Christ called His disciples to see Him put to death; He led every one
of them to the place where their hearts were broken. Jesus Christ's
life was an absolute failure from every standpoint but God's. But
what seemed failure from man's standpoint was a tremendous triumph
from God's, because God's purpose is never man's purpose.

There comes the baffling call of God in our lives also. The call of
God can never be stated explicitly; it is implicit. The call of God
is like the call of the sea, no one hears it but the one who has the
nature of the sea in him. It cannot be stated definitely what the
call of God is to, because His call is to be in comradeship with
Himself for His own purposes, and the test is to believe that God
knows what He is after. The things that happen do not happen by
chance, they happen entirely in the decree of God. God is working out
His purposes.

If we are in communion with God and recognize that He is taking us
into His purposes, we shall no longer try to find out what His
purposes are. As we go on in the Christian life it gets simpler,
because we are less inclined to say - Now why did God allow this and
that? Behind the whole thing lies the compelling of God. "There's a
divinity that shapes our ends." A Christian is one who trusts the
wits and the wisdom of God, and not his own wits. If we have a
purpose of our own, it destroys the simplicity and the leisureliness
which ought to characterize the children of God.

FIT FOR SERVICE

1 Timothy 1:12-15
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Timothy+1:12-15

Dear Father,

Thank you for the strength that you give us to minister to others.
We bless you for judging us faithful and for committing talents to
us by which we may help others.

In spite of our offenses against you, you show great mercy in
overlooking our ignorance and unbelief and by now giving us
opportunities and encouragement to serve you.

You have made the graciousness of our Lord Jesus Christ overflow
to us in the faith and the love that are available in him.

How sure and worthy of full acceptance is the truth that our Lord
Jesus came into the world to save sinners. We were sinners!

Thank you for the salvation that you wrought for us through him,
in whose name I now pray. Amen.

WJD! -- He's Calling You! -- Mark 10:49-50

He's Calling You!

Jesus stopped and said, "Tell the man to come here." So they
called the blind man. They said, "Be happy! Stand up! Jesus
is calling you." The blind man stood quickly. He left his
coat there and went to Jesus.

-- Mark 10:49-50 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus still calls to us! He wants us to hear the message of his life --
you can come to me and receive life, he speaks to us. He wants us to
hear the message of his teaching -- you who are heavy burdened come to
me and learn from me and find rest with me, he tells us. He wants us to
hear the message of his resurrection -- you can come to me and find
rest, safety, and joy in my presence, he wants us to know. Jesus is
calling to you. Will you follow him?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father in heaven, help me hear the voice of Jesus calling to me to
follow, to find rest, and to focus on the glorious future that I have
in him. Give me courage to keep hearing his voice and following him
faithfully. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : 2 Corinthians 8:5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

August 5, 2008

VERSE:
And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves
first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.
-- 2 Corinthians 8:5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+8:5

THOUGHT:
Paul was surprised at the Macedonians' generosity to the Lord's
work for two reasons. First, they were very impoverished and didn't
have much to share. Second, rather than viewing what they had as
their own, they gave themselves to God and then to his servants who
were asking for their help in ministering to others. Their example
is a great reminder to us of how we need to approach our giving to
help others in need.

PRAYER:
O Righteous Father and Holy God, forgive me for being selfish
with the funds you have so richly shared with me. I want to give my
heart and my life to you fully, not holding back anything from your
will, and I ask you to help me know how to best use the blessings
you have entrusted to me. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
