Today's Verse : 1 John 4:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 28, 2009

VERSE:
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them [those
who deny that Jesus is from God and who have the spirit of the
world], because the one who is in you is greater than the one who
is in the world.

-- 1 John 4:4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+John+4:4

THOUGHT:
The world can often be a hostile place for believers. God wants
his spiritual children to know, however, that they are not alone.
He lives in us through his Spirit. We can be assured, therefore,
that no matter what spirit someone else may have, the Holy Spirit
of God is greater, more powerful, and more glorious. The victory is
ours because God's presence in us is greater than any force that we
will ever face. We have our victory assured over all forces,
powers, spirits, or opponents.

PRAYER:
Dear Father, please give me the confidence, boldness, and
conviction of your promises. I want to live boldly for your glory
and according to your will. Thank you for empowering me to this
victorious living by your Spirit who lives within me. To you belong
all glory, majesty, and praise. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Who Is Your Rock?

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Who Is Your Rock?
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
HE ONLY is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. Psalm 62:2 KJV

If you are trying to be a rock on your own, WATCH OUT! The forecast is calling for rough winds throughout the next century or at least until Jesus returns.

I use several versions of the Bible, but for this verse I particularly like the King James Version. It says when God is my rock and my salvation, my defense, I shall not be greatly moved. Now, notice carefully, the Psalmist does not say he WILL not be moved, he says I shall not be moved greatly.

Now I don't know about you. Maybe you are much more righteous than I and you never experience movement in your Christian walk. You simply trust Him every day. The winds and trials of life don't sway you from your solid faith. There is no doubt in your heart.

But for me, I move. No, I don't want to move. I want constant, powerful, unmovable faith. But sometimes I waver a bit.

Thankfully though, I have found from steady experience that if I will grow in my relationship with Him, if I will consistently seek to make Him Lord of my life, the winds keep coming, but they have far less effect on me.

When I allow Him to be the rock, instead of me trying to be, I find I am much more powerful to meet the storms of life.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

A Leader's First Duty, by Rubel Shelly

The first duty of a leader is personal integrity. Whether in politics,
athletics, business, education, or family, who the person is counts for
more than what she does. His title, fame, or salary can never
compensate for a lack of character.

We all know it is true, but we seem to have ignored it of late. So we
have been willing to overlook a person's out-of-control lifestyle so
long as he can still score points and win games for our team. We have
tolerated flagrant excess and sexual infidelities so long as the
bottom-line stayed strong. We have put up with everything from perjury
and kickbacks in public officials to abusive language and unfair
treatment by owners and bosses. "After all," we said with straight
faces, "someone's personal life has nothing to do with his competence
for a public role."

But character, integrity, and honesty are alternate names for the
thread that runs through those trustworthy people whose leadership we
can trust. If a man or woman will deceive the mate to whom public
promises were made and betray the children born to that union, he or
she won't hesitate to step on you and me. People who are deceitful in
one area of their lives will deceive whenever they deem it necessary.
And the deciding factor will be their selfish interests, not the public
trust or the good of stockholders and investors.

What the likes of Madoff, Blagojevich, A-Rod and others call to our
minds is what our mothers taught us as little children. Play nice. Tell
the truth. Don't take things that don't belong to you. Treat people the
way you want them to treat you.

People who rise to fortune, stardom, or high position tend to be
exposed soon enough when their character is fundamentally flawed. But
we have been willing to vote them back into office, buy their music,
invest in their schemes, pay to see them play, and otherwise support
them in their public roles. We lied to ourselves by saying we just
didn't see the connection between private life and public life, who
they are as people and what they do as professionals.

We lied to ourselves by saying we just didn't see the connection!

Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus studied 60 successful CEOs of major
corporations and found that almost all of them were still married to
their first spouse. People who value commitments and promises value
them at every level. If they live them at home, they live them at work.
If they don't honor them in their personal lives, they may not be
working to do so in their business lives either.

The Bible says this:

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever follows
perverse ways will be found out (Proverbs 10:9).

This ancient proverb is confirmed to us again and again. We deny it to
our shame and dismay.

What is true of the headline-makers is true for you and me as well.

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 91:9 and Micah 5:2

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, February 27, 2009

MORNING:

"Thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most
High, thy habitation."
-- Psalms 91:9

The Israelites in the wilderness were continually exposed to change.
Whenever the pillar stayed its motion, the tents were pitched; but
tomorrow, ere the morning sun had risen, the trumpet sounded, the ark
was in motion, and the fiery, cloudy pillar was leading the way through
the narrow defiles of the mountain, up the hill side, or along the arid
waste of the wilderness. They had scarcely time to rest a little before
they heard the sound of "Away! this is not your rest; you must still be
onward journeying towards Canaan!" They were never long in one place.
Even wells and palm trees could not detain them. Yet they had an
abiding home in their God, his cloudy pillar was their roof-tree, and
its flame by night their household fire. They must go onward from place
to place, continually changing, never having time to settle, and to
say, "Now we are secure; in this place we shall dwell." "Yet," says
Moses, "though we are always changing, Lord, thou hast been our
dwelling-place throughout all generations." The Christian knows no
change with regard to God. He may be rich to-day and poor to-morrow; he
may be sickly to-day and well to-morrow; he may be in happiness to-day,
to-morrow he may be distressed-but there is no change with regard to
his relationship to God. If he loved me yesterday, he loves me to-day.
My unmoving mansion of rest is my blessed Lord. Let prospects be
blighted; let hopes be blasted; let joy be withered; let mildews
destroy everything; I have lost nothing of what I have in God. He is
"my strong habitation whereunto I can continually resort." I am a
pilgrim in the world, but at home in my God. In the earth I wander, but
in God I dwell in a quiet habitation.

EVENING:

"Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting"
-- Micah 5:2

The Lord Jesus had goings forth for his people as their representative
before the throne, long before they appeared upon the stage of time. It
was "from everlasting" that he signed the compact with his Father, that
he would pay blood for blood, suffering for suffering, agony for agony,
and death for death, in the behalf of his people; it was "from
everlasting" that he gave himself up without a murmuring word. That
from the crown of his head to the sole of his foot he might sweat great
drops of blood, that he might be spit upon, pierced, mocked, rent
asunder, and crushed beneath the pains of death. His goings forth as
our Surety were from everlasting. Pause, my soul, and wonder! Thou hast
goings forth in the person of Jesus "from everlasting." Not only when
thou wast born into the world did Christ love thee, but his delights
were with the sons of men before there were any sons of men. Often did
he think of them; from everlasting to everlasting he had set his
affection upon them. What! my soul, has he been so long about thy
salvation, and will not he accomplish it? Has he from everlasting been
going forth to save me, and will he lose me now? What! Has he carried
me in his hand, as his precious jewel, and will he now let me slip from
between his fingers? Did he choose me before the mountains were brought
forth, or the channels of the deep were digged, and will he reject me
now? Impossible! I am sure he would not have loved me so long if he had
not been a changeless Lover. If he could grow weary of me, he would
have been tired of me long before now. If he had not loved me with a
love as deep as hell, and as strong as death, he would have turned from
me long ago. Oh, joy above all joys, to know that I am his everlasting
and inalienable inheritance, given to him by his Father or ever the
earth was! Everlasting love shall be the pillow for my head this night.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Impoverished Ministry Of Jesus"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 27, 2009

IMPOVERISHED MINISTRY OF JESUS

From whence then hast Thou that living water?

John 4:11
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+4:11&sr=1

"The well is deep" - and a great deal deeper than the Samaritan woman
knew! Think of the depths of human nature, of human life, think of
the depths of the "wells" in you. Have you been impoverishing the
ministry of Jesus so that He can not do anything? Suppose there is a
well of fathomless trouble inside your heart, and Jesus comes and
says - "Let not your heart be troubled"; and you shrug your shoulders
and say, "But, Lord, the well is deep; You cannot draw up quietness
and comfort out of it." No, He will bring them down from above. Jesus
does not bring anything up from the wells of human nature. We limit
the Holy One of Israel by remembering what we have allowed Him to do
for us in the past, and by saying, "Of course I cannot expect God to
do this thing." The thing that taxes almightiness is the very thing
which we as disciples of Jesus ought to believe He will do. We
impoverish His ministry the moment we forget He is Almighty; the
impoverishment is in us, not in Him. We will come to Jesus as
Comforter or as Sympathizer, but we will not come to Him as Almighty.

The reason some of us are such poor specimens of Christianity is
because we have no Almighty Christ. We have Christian attributes and
experiences, but there is no abandonment to Jesus Christ. When we get
into difficult circumstances, we impoverish His ministry by saying -
"Of course He cannot do any thing," and we struggle down to the deeps
and try to get the water for ourselves. Beware of the satisfaction of
sinking back and saying - "It can't be done"; you know it can be done
if you look to Jesus. The well of your incompleteness is deep, but
make the effort and look away to Him.

Praying with Paul : "Staying Awake"

STAYING AWAKE

Romans 13:11-14
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+13:11-14

Dear Father, victorious deliverer,

May I be found in Christ, not trusting any righteousness of my
own. Let me know him and the power of his resurrection. May I share
his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, so I might attain
the resurrection of the dead.

O God, let me obtain it! Let me be awake! Let me put on the armor
of light! Let me put on the Lord Jesus and his righteousness, and
be found in him! Let me trust, obey, even suffer, in order to have
the victory!

In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

WJD! -- Truthfulness! -- Matthew 5:33-34

Truthfulness!

"You have heard that it was said to our people long ago,
'When you make a vow (promise), don't break that promise.
Keep the vows (promises) that you make to the Lord.' But I
tell you, never make a vow. Don't make a vow using the name
of heaven, because heaven is God's throne."

-- Matthew 5:33-34 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
When we promise God something, he expects us to keep our word. It
doesn't matter what the cultural view of truth and lying is, we are to
be honest before God and with each other. In a way, it is ridiculous to
try to live in any other way. After all, God knows our heart, our
intentions, and our actions. He will hold us to our promises whether
anyone else does or not! So let's make sure our word is genuine and
that we don't need to pile up a bunch of other "flowery" language or
culturally appropriate expletives to prop up our commitments. If we say
we'll do it, then let's do it!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father in heaven, please forgive me for the times I have not kept my
word. Stir in me a passion for faithfulness and trustworthiness. Make
me a person who can be counted upon to follow through with what I say.
In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
