Today's Verse : Deuteronomy 24:19

December 13, 2007

VERSE:
When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf,
do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless
and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the
work of your hands.
-- Deuteronomy 24:19

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Deuteronomy+24:19

THOUGHT:
This is clearly a passage old Scrooge hadn't seen! God has
always set aside a provision for the poor. In this time of the year
when many people world over take special time to look after those
who are less fortunate, let's open our date books and schedule a
week to dedicate time for special generosity in May and in August
to go with a heart committed to be generous all the time. Let's not
let generosity and concern for those less fortunate be a once a
year thing!

PRAYER:
For all of your wonderful gifts of kindness and grace, I thank
you, dear Father and God. Please stir my heart to care for others
as you do. Please help me keep that spirit of concern alive all
year long and not just around Christmas time. In Jesus' name I ask
this. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Who Me? 3

Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 2 Samuel 7:18 NIV

At this point in David's life, as he is asking God "Who am I?", David has changed the meaning of the question. Previously, as David asked God the question, he was pondering the fact that God would call him to a position of leadership; that God would use him. This time, when David asks God "Who am I?", he is asking because he can't believe how much God has blessed him.

Have you ever stopped to ask God that question? I realize that those types of examinations of heart usually occur after some great event in our life; after a child is born, someone is healed of cancer, something like that. But, what about during the normal course of life? Can you believe God would bless you in such a way?

Are you breathing? Did you have to think about it or did your lungs just start working this morning? What about the food you've had recently? Sure, you worked hard for it, but what if God had decided to put us here with nothing to eat? Have you thought about the perfect distance God has placed the Sun from the Earth? If it had been any further and we would have frozen, and any closer and we would burn.

David was in a reflective mode when he prayed today's prayer. Would you do me a favor? Would you get into a reflective mode for just a moment? Think about the ways God has blessed you. (Maybe you would even drop me an email with one short example.) Consider the work of God in your life and in the life of your family. Then ask yourself, as David did, "Who am I, Lord?".

Avoid Sending SPAM!, by Skye Noe

SPAM Messages

I've worked on the Internet for years and I've seen technology grow in
ways I never thought possible. Who could have predicted the world would
become so small? The greatest gift of the Internet is the power to
erase separation. I can communicate to a friend across town just as
quickly as I can a friend on the other side of the world. The joys of
the Internet are not without their faults, with great convenience comes
great hassle.

The most annoying byproduct of Internet communication has got to be
SPAM e-mail. As if normal junk mail wasn't bad enough, now we live in
the age of junk e-mail. There is nothing more frustrating than having
the excitement of receiving a new message, only to then find out that
the message has nothing to do with you.

I wonder sometimes if God feels the same way about the messages I send.
I think about my prayer life and how often I address the message to Him
but seem to only talk about me. Does he feel that same excitement when
he hears me start to speak, only to be disappointed when I talk only
about myself?

This scripture comes to mind:

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

How can I bring the focus of my prayers back to God?

Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

Too often my prayers lack joy and gladness. I think about the ways that
God has helped me in the past and, instead of thanking him, I ask for
more. There are an infinite number of things that I could thank God for
and even though he knows I'm thankful, it's still good to say it is
sometimes.

I encourage you to examine your own prayers and see if there are some
ways you could bring the focus back to God. If you have any questions
about prayer, please drop me a note at skye@hopeforlife.org.

Morning & Evening -- Habakkuk 3:6 and Hosea 5:7

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

MORNING:

"His ways are everlasting."
-- Habakkuk 3:6

What he hath done at one time, he will do yet again. Man's ways are
variable, but God's ways are everlasting. There are many reasons for
this most comforting truth: among them are the following-the Lord's
ways are the result of wise deliberation; he ordereth all things
according to the counsel of his own will. Human action is frequently
the hasty result of passion, or fear, and is followed by regret and
alteration; but nothing can take the Almighty by surprise, or happen
otherwise than he has foreseen. His ways are the outgrowth of an
immutable character, and in them the fixed and settled attributes of
God are clearly to be seen. Unless the Eternal One himself can undergo
change, his ways, which are himself in action, must remain for ever the
same. Is he eternally just, gracious, faithful, wise, tender?-then his
ways must ever be distinguished for the same excellences. Beings act
according to their nature: when those natures change, their conduct
varies also; but since God cannot know the shadow of a turning, his
ways will abide everlastingly the same. Moreover there is no reason
from without which could reverse the divine ways, since they are the
embodiment of irresistible might. The earth is said, by the prophet, to
be cleft with rivers, mountains tremble, the deep lifts up its hands,
and sun and moon stand still, when Jehovah marches forth for the
salvation of his people. Who can stay his hand, or say unto him, What
doest thou? But it is not might alone which gives stability; God's ways
are the manifestation of the eternal principles of right, and therefore
can never pass away. Wrong breeds decay and involves ruin, but the true
and the good have about them a vitality which ages cannot diminish.

This morning let us go to our heavenly Father with confidence,
remembering that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, to-day, and for
ever, and in him the Lord is ever gracious to his people.

EVENING:

"They have dealt treacherously against the Lord."
-- Hosea 5:7

Believer, here is a sorrowful truth! Thou art the beloved of the Lord,
redeemed by blood, called by grace, preserved in Christ Jesus, accepted
in the Beloved, on thy way to heaven, and yet, "thou hast dealt
treacherously" with God, thy best friend; treacherously with Jesus,
whose thou art; treacherously with the Holy Spirit, by whom thou hast
been quickened unto life eternal! How treacherous you have been in the
matter of vows and promises. Do you remember the love of your
espousals, that happy time-the springtime of your spiritual life? Oh,
how closely did you cling to your Master then! saying, "He shall never
charge me with indifference; my feet shall never grow slow in the way
of his service; I will not suffer my heart to wander after other loves;
in him is every store of sweetness ineffable. I give all up for my Lord
Jesus' sake." Has it been so? Alas! if conscience speak, it will say,
"He who promised so well has performed most ill. Prayer has oftentimes
been slurred-it has been short, but not sweet; brief, but not fervent.
Communion with Christ has been forgotten. Instead of a heavenly mind,
there have been carnal cares, worldly vanities and thoughts of evil.
Instead of service, there has been disobedience; instead of fervency,
lukewarmness; instead of patience, petulance; instead of faith,
confidence in an arm of flesh; and as a soldier of the cross there has
been cowardice, disobedience, and desertion, to a very shameful
degree." "Thou hast dealt treacherously." Treachery to Jesus! what
words shall be used in denouncing it? Words little avail: let our
penitent thoughts execrate the sin which is so surely in us.
Treacherous to thy wounds, O Jesus! Forgive us, and let us not sin
again! How shameful to be treacherous to him who never forgets us, but
who this day stands with our names engraven on his breastplate before
the eternal throne.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Personality"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 12, 2007

PERSONALITY

That they may be one, even as we are one.

John 17:22

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+17:22&sr=1

Personality is that peculiar, incalculable thing that is meant when
we speak of ourselves as distinct from everyone else. Our personality
is always too big for us to grasp. An island in the sea may be but
the top of a great mountain. Personality is like an island, we know
nothing about the great depths underneath, consequently we cannot
estimate ourselves. We begin by thinking that we can, but we come to
realize that there is only one Being Who understands us, and that is
our Creator.

Personality is the characteristic of the spiritual man as
individuality is the characteristic of the natural man. Our Lord can
never be defined in terms of individuality and independence, but only
in terms of personality, "I and My Father are one." Personality
merges, and you only reach your real identity when you are merged
with an other person. When love, or the Spirit of God strikes a man,
he is transformed, he no longer insists upon his separate
individuality. Our Lord never spoke in terms of individuality, of a
man's "elbows" or his isolated position, but in terms of personality
- "that they may be one, even as We are one." If you give up your
right to yourself to God, the real true nature of your personality
answers to God straight away. Jesus Christ emancipates the
personality, and the individuality is transfigured; the transfiguring
element is love, personal devotion to Jesus. Love is the outpouring
of one personality in fellowship with another personality.

YOU MADE ENDURANCE POSSIBLE!

Colossians 1:23

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+1:23

Dear Father,

Help me to continue in the faith by holding on to what you have
given and by being stable and steadfast.

Don't let anything move me away from the hope of the Good News
which I heard, which was proclaimed throughout the whole creation
under heaven.

You make my endurance possible by filling me with your Spirit.
Fill me more and more! And thank you for being my Father.

In the name of Jesus and by his authority I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- When the Power of Darkness Reigns -- Luke 22:49-53

When the Power of Darkness Reigns

The followers of Jesus were standing there too. They saw what
was happening. The followers said to Jesus, "Lord, should we
use our swords?" And one of the followers did use his sword.
He cut off the right ear of the servant of the high priest.
Jesus said, "Stop!" Then Jesus touched the servant's ear and
healed him. The group that came to arrest Jesus were the
leading priests, the older Jewish leaders, and the Jewish
soldiers. Jesus said to them, "Why did you come out here with
swords and sticks? Do you think I am a criminal? I was with
you every day in the temple area. Why didn't you try to
arrest me there? But this is your time--the time when
darkness (sin) rules."

-- Luke 22:49-53 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
We forget, I fear, that we don't live in this world alone. We face a
foe seeking to harm us. He seeks to disable, discredit, and destroy us.
He will have his moments of victory, leading us to stumble and fall.
There will be times on this earth when the power of darkness does
reign. However, because Jesus won the ultimate victory in this battle
beginning in the garden and leading to the Cross, our victory in our
war against Satan, sin, and death is assured. Darkness had its moment,
but it could not snuff out the light of God. The light and love of God
reign because of the victory of Jesus.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, please never let me forget that in your Son, I have the
ultimate victory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
