THOUGHT:
Having a place of permanence in the middle of life's
uncertainties and having the assurance of God's provision are based
on two very clear principles: trusting in the LORD and doing good
to others. When we live by those two commitments, we learn to
depend upon God in fresh new ways that bring us refreshment, hope,
and new joy.

PRAYER:
Loving God, my Abba Father, I trust you with my life. I offer it
to you as a living sacrifice to bring you glory and honor. As I do
this, dear Father, I know you are rushing to meet me with your
loving grace and mercy beyond compare. Thank you! In Jesus' name I
praise. Amen.

Jesus was there at the beginning. When God said, �Let there be...,� Jesus was with Him giving His approval. Jesus is a part of the Father. When you have seen Jesus, you have seen God.

Jesus is here today. He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding on our behalf. He literally resides within the heart of every Christian through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

And, Jesus is still to come. He is the reigning King who will mount a white horse and come in the clouds to proclaim victory for His people once and for all. He is the Victor over death and holds the keys to Hell. He will bring justice and peace to a fallen, mixed-up, broken world.

When Jesus says He is the Alpha and Omega, He is claiming to be before and after all that we can know or imagine. He's the beginning and the end, and everything in t he middle. There has never been a moment when Jesus wasn't, and there will never be a time when He isn't.

When you consider His character, which transcends our measurements of time, you can easily see how He can help you and I through the simple (to Him) problems and burdens of life. Since He is greater than all our cares and concerns, He is able to provide answers to each one.

Thank God today that He IS, WAS, and shall forever Be!

Don't Trust a Shadow, by Rubel Shelly


There are companies devoted to creating and maintaining "image."
Actors, athletes, politicians, executives of major corporations -- it
is not unusual for them to have someone in charge of their public
persona, their image, their reputation.

At one level, I understand the task of such companies or persons. Given
the fact that celebrities are marketable in terms of their names, it is
not absurd to think that somebody needs to be monitoring what is being
said or put on the Internet. Just think, for example, of the image-name
value of Tiger Woods.

There is another sense, however, in which image and reputation are
quite secondary. One could even say they are unimportant. Since we are
just one week past Presidents' Day, I will let Abraham Lincoln make the
point here. "Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow,"
Lincoln is reported to have said. "The shadow is what we think of it;
the tree is the real thing."

The man who is almost always selected by both scholars and ordinary
folk as the best president in America's history knew whereof he spoke.
He might have spoken with a tinge of melancholy in his voice. It likely
came from deep thought about the turmoil his role in history forced him
to suffer.

Called a "buffoon" by people from his own political party, Lincoln was
hardly thought to be the man for the job as the Union was about to be
severed. Then, as the Civil War raged, politicians, newspapers, and
conversations in village squares indicted him for his ineffective
leadership and bumbling prosecution of a war. His tall, gangly frame
and big ears led to caricatures and comparisons to an ape. The early
signs were not favorable to the greatness we ascribe to him now.

Lincoln lived through the horrible time of the Civil War with personal
integrity intact. He wept for the fallen -- Rebels as well as Yankees.
He was determined to uphold the human dignity of all -- blacks as well
as whites. He planned to restore the Union with healing grace rather
than hateful revenge.

Lincoln believed it was the tree that was to be trusted, not the
shadow.

Some scholars cite his second inaugural address as his greatest speech:

With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the
right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive to finish
the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds; to care for him
who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan
-- to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting
peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.

Lincoln believed it was the tree that was to be trusted, not the
shadow. That it was real character that mattered, not others' opinions.
He was right. Just ask anybody who has trusted image over character.

God's wisdom says it this way:

Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes
crooked paths will be found out. (Proverbs 10:9 NIV)

MORNING:

"But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to
sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and
his mattock."
-- 1 Samuel 13:20

We are engaged in a great war with the Philistines of evil. Every
weapon within our reach must be used. Preaching, teaching, praying,
giving, all must be brought into action, and talents which have been
thought too mean for service, must now be employed. Coulter, and axe,
and mattock, may all be useful in slaying Philistines; rough tools may
deal hard blows, and killing need not be elegantly done, so long as it
is done effectually. Each moment of time, in season or out of season;
each fragment of ability, educated or untutored; each opportunity,
favourable or unfavourable, must be used, for our foes are many and our
force but slender.

Most of our tools want sharpening; we need quickness of perception,
tact, energy, promptness, in a word, complete adaptation for the Lord's
work. Practical common sense is a very scarce thing among the
conductors of Christian enterprises. We might learn from our enemies if
we would, and so make the Philistines sharpen our weapons. This morning
let us note enough to sharpen our zeal during this day by the aid of
the Holy Spirit. See the energy of the Papists, how they compass sea
and land to make one proselyte, are they to monopolize all the
earnestness? Mark the heathen devotees, what tortures they endure in
the service of their idols! are they alone to exhibit patience and
self-sacrifice? Observe the prince of darkness, how persevering in his
endeavours, how unabashed in his attempts, how daring in his plans, how
thoughtful in his plots, how energetic in all! The devils are united as
one man in their infamous rebellion, while we believers in Jesus are
divided in our service of God, and scarcely ever work with unanimity. O
that from Satan's infernal industry we may learn to go about like good
Samaritans, seeking whom we may bless!

EVENING:

"Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this
grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the
unsearchable riches of Christ."
-- Ephesians 3:8

The apostle Paul felt it a great privilege to be allowed to preach the
gospel. He did not look upon his calling as a drudgery, but he entered
upon it with intense delight. Yet while Paul was thus thankful for his
office, his success in it greatly humbled him. The fuller a vessel
becomes, the deeper it sinks in the water. Idlers may indulge a fond
conceit of their abilities, because they are untried; but the earnest
worker soon learns his own weakness. If you seek humility, try hard
work; if you would know your nothingness, attempt some great thing for
Jesus. If you would feel how utterly powerless you are apart from the
living God, attempt especially the great work of proclaiming the
unsearchable riches of Christ, and you will know, as you never knew
before, what a weak unworthy thing you are. Although the apostle thus
knew and confessed his weakness, he was never perplexed as to the
subject of his ministry. From his first sermon to his last, Paul
preached Christ, and nothing but Christ. He lifted up the cross, and
extolled the Son of God who bled thereon. Follow his example in all
your personal efforts to spread the glad tidings of salvation, and let
"Christ and him crucified" be your ever recurring theme. The Christian
should be like those lovely spring flowers which, when the sun is
shining, open their golden cups, as if saying, "Fill us with thy
beams!" but when the sun is hidden behind a cloud, they close their
cups and droop their heads. So should the Christian feel the sweet
influence of Jesus; Jesus must be his sun, and he must be the flower
which yields itself to the Sun of Righteousness. Oh! to speak of Christ
alone, this is the subject which is both "seed for the sower, and bread
for the eater." This is the live coal for the lip of the speaker, and
the master-key to the heart of the hearer.

HAVE YOU FELT THE HURT OF THE LORD?

Jesus said unto him the third time, Lovest thou Me?

John 21:17

Have you felt the hurt of the Lord to the uncovered quick, the place
where the real sensitiveness of your life is lodged? The devil never
hurts there, neither sin nor human affection hurts there, nothing
goes through to that place but the word of God. "Peter was grieved
because Jesus said unto him the third time. . . ." He was awakening
to the fact that in the real true centre of his personal life he was
devoted to Jesus, and he began to see what the patient questioning
meant. There was not the slightest strand of delusion left in Peter's
mind, he never could be deluded again. There was no room for
passionate utterance, no room for exhilaration or sentiment. It was a
revelation to him to realize how much he did love the Lord, and with
amazement he said - "Lord, Thou knowest all things." Peter began to
see how much he did love Jesus; but he did not say - "Look at this or
that to confirm it." Peter was beginning to discover to himself how
much he did love the Lord, that there was no one in heaven above or
upon earth beneath beside Jesus Christ; but he did not know it until
the probing, hurting questions of the Lord came. The Lord's questions
always reveal me to myself.

The patient directness and skill of Jesus Christ with Peter! Our Lord
never asks questions until the right time. Rarely, but probably once,
He will get us into a corner where He will hurt us with His
undeviating questions, and we will realize that we do love Him far
more deeply than any profession can ever show.

PURSUING PEACE

Romans 14:17-23

Dear Father, giver of brotherly love,

How wonderful that your kingdom, your rule in people's lives, is
not a matter of food and drink, but of righteousness and peace and
joy in the Holy Spirit. May I, in serving Christ this way, be
acceptable to you and approved by others.

Let me and all the members of your family pursue what makes for
peace and for mutual uplifting. Let none of us, for the sake of
personal rights, destroy your work of grace in someone else. Help
us to appreciate our rights, but help each of us understand that it
is wrong to make others fall by insisting on them. Guide us to see
that it is right not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that
would make a brother or sister stumble.

The faith that I have, let me keep between you and me. Let me find
happiness in having no reason to judge myself for what I approve.
May I never do anything from the basis of doubt, because not acting
from conviction is sin.

In the name of Jesus I pray all this, asking that you will give me
love for my brothers and sisters. Amen.

Lost My Shirt


"If a person wants to sue you in court and take your shirt,
then let him have your coat too."

-- Matthew 5:40 (ERV)


KEY THOUGHT:
We have basic rights -- at least that's the assumption many of us
operate under as human beings. We get very angry when those basic
rights are compromised. Jesus, however, is more concerned that we be
redemptively right than he is with our insisting that our rights are
honored in every situation here on earth. His goal is to redeem others
through us, not to get even with them. Jesus' orientation toward
personal rights should not surprise us. He gave up all of his rights
and left heaven to redeem us! (Phil. 2:5-11). On the other hand, Jesus
staunchly defended the rights of others when those in charge tried to
take those rights away from them. Why? Jesus' primary concern was to
redeem and bless all people. He now wants us to do the same. The goal
of our behavior is to be redemptive to others whether it is our rights
or theirs that have been violated!


TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty and compassionate Father, give me less passion for my own
rights and greater passion to defend the rights of others who are being
abused and exploited. Give me a sensitive heart to see beyond the
things done to me that are wrong so that I may see the wrong in the
hearts of others and influence them to come closer to you. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.
