Girding Up the Loins of Your Mind

1Pet 1: 13 Therefore girding up the loins of your mind and
being sober, set your hope perfectly on the grace being brought
to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

To gird up the loins of our mind means not to be loose in our
thinking. However, most of us are very loose in our thinking.
Our thoughts jump from one thing to another. In a few seconds,
in our mind we can travel around the world. We may think about
one thing and then suddenly think about something else. For
example, while praising the Lord at the Lord's table, we may
suddenly begin to think of something we have just purchased
from the store. Because our thoughts can travel so fast, we
need to gird up the loins of our mind.

Here Peter seems to be saying, "Brothers, I have just presented
you a number of marvelous, divine items. You have read my well-
speaking concerning the Triune God. The God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ has regenerated us unto a living hope. I have
spoken of God's selection according to His foreknowledge, of
Christ's redemption, and the Spirit's application. Now I urge
you to gird up the loins of your mind. Don't let your mind be
loose."

In verse 13 Peter also speaks of being sober. To be sober is to
be calm and clear in mind, able to realize God's economy in His
salvation, as revealed in verses 3 through 12, without being
disturbed by fear, anxiety, or any care.

Expectations, by Tom Norvell


Expectations are interesting. If we make them high, we can set
ourselves up for disappointment. If we keep them low, then we run the
risk living with an attitude of futility.

The college student dreams of a day with no more term papers, no more
tests, no more pop quizzes, and no more tuition payments. "Once I get
my degree I'll have the world by the tail on a downhill pull." Then,
reality sets in. Work becomes an every day all day event. No skipping
out on work to "just hang out with friends." No more being able to
sleep late every day. Our expectations may exceed our reality.

A couple gets married filled with expectations of what married life
will be like. One envisions a quiet dinner by candlelight every night.
One imagines frequent leisurely strolls along the beach holding hands
as the sun slowly sinks into the horizon with regularity. One dreams of
evenings filled with endless meaningful conversation. One fantasizes of
constant and amazing sexual experiences ... every night. One imagines a
bank account that never runs low on funds. Bills are always paid on
time or in advance. Our expectations may exceed our reality.

Before the baby is born parent's expectations are plentiful. "Our baby
will probably sleep through the night, potty train herself, and never
speak a defiant word." "Our child will never throw a fit in the middle
of the grocery store." "Our child will be healthy, good looking, and
the smartest in the class." Our expectations may exceed our reality.

What was expected to be a long-term relationship ended another
disappointment. No explanation. No real reason. It just ended. The
relationship did not live up to our expectations.

The job we expected to take us to the top of the corporate ladder led
to the destruction of our family and ruined our health. The career did
not meet our expectations.

We invest our energy -- our time, our hopes, our dreams, and our very
selves -- in what we believe will provide us with fulfillment and a
meaningful life. Later we discover that we feel more alone and confused
than before.

What does this tell us about expectations? Are there lessons we can
learn?

First, try to love people and expect very little in return. Don't
expect them to love you in return. Just love them. Don't expect a
"Thank you!" Don't demand they respect you or honor you for your deeds.
Don't expect to be praised for your good deed. Don't expect to hear
from them years later telling you how much your gift of love meant to
them. Just love them and expect very little in return.

Let God surprise you!

Second, don't expect things to give meaning to your life. Things don't
last. Stuff will wear-out. Life is not always fair, and we don't always
get what we think we deserve. Good is not always rewarded. Bad will not
always be punished.

Third, put your expectations in the Lord. The Psalmist said:

Give ear to my words, O Lord,
consider my sighing.
Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation
(Psalm 5:1-3 NIV).

God can handle our expectations. He will come through. God can be
trusted. God can fulfill our dreams and our expectations.

Fourth, let God surprise you. He may do more than we expect:

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or
imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him
be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, for ever and ever! Amen (Ephesians 3:20-21 NIV).

Be wise in your expectations. Don't set them too high. Don't keep them
low to play it safe. Put your expectations in the One who can handle
them. God expects us to lay our requests before Him, and He expects us
to wait in expectation for Him to act.

I expect you will be pleased with the results.

MORNING:

"That through death he might destroy him that had the power of
death."
-- Hebrews 2:14

O child of God, death hath lost its sting, because the devil's power
over it is destroyed. Then cease to fear dying. Ask grace from God the
Holy Ghost, that by an intimate knowledge and a firm belief of thy
Redeemer's death, thou mayst be strengthened for that dread hour.
Living near the cross of Calvary thou mayst think of death with
pleasure, and welcome it when it comes with intense delight. It is
sweet to die in the Lord: it is a covenant-blessing to sleep in Jesus.
Death is no longer banishment, it is a return from exile, a going home
to the many mansions where the loved ones already dwell. The distance
between glorified spirits in heaven and militant saints on earth seems
great; but it is not so. We are not far from home-a moment will bring
us there. The sail is spread; the soul is launched upon the deep. How
long will be its voyage? How many wearying winds must beat upon the
sail ere it shall be reefed in the port of peace? How long shall that
soul be tossed upon the waves before it comes to that sea which knows
no storm? Listen to the answer, "Absent from the body, present with the
Lord." Yon ship has just departed, but it is already at its haven. It
did but spread its sail and it was there. Like that ship of old, upon
the Lake of Galilee, a storm had tossed it, but Jesus said, "Peace, be
still," and immediately it came to land. Think not that a long period
intervenes between the instant of death and the eternity of glory. When
the eyes close on earth they open in heaven. The horses of fire are not
an instant on the road. Then, O child of God, what is there for thee to
fear in death, seeing that through the death of thy Lord its curse and
sting are destroyed? and now it is but a Jacob's ladder whose foot is
in the dark grave, but its top reaches to glory everlasting.

EVENING:

"Fight the Lord's battles."
-- 1&nbsp;Samuel 18:17

The sacramental host of God's elect is warring still on earth, Jesus
Christ being the Captain of their salvation. He has said, "Lo! I am
with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Hark to the shouts of
war! Now let the people of God stand fast in their ranks, and let no
man's heart fail him. It is true that just now in England the battle is
turned against us, and unless the Lord Jesus shall lift his sword, we
know not what may become of the church of God in this land; but let us
be of good courage, and play the man. There never was a day when
Protestantism seemed to tremble more in the scales than now that a
fierce effort is making to restore the Romish antichrist to his ancient
seat. We greatly want a bold voice and a strong hand to preach and
publish the old gospel for which martyrs bled and confessors died. The
Saviour is, by his Spirit, still on earth; let this cheer us. He is
ever in the midst of the fight, and therefore the battle is not
doubtful. And as the conflict rages, what a sweet satisfaction it is to
know that the Lord Jesus, in his office as our great Intercessor, is
prevalently pleading for his people! O anxious gazer, look not so much
at the battle below, for there thou shalt be enshrouded in smoke, and
amazed with garments rolled in blood; but lift thine eyes yonder where
the Saviour lives and pleads, for while he intercedes, the cause of God
is safe. Let us fight as if it all depended upon us, but let us look up
and know that all depends upon him.

Now, by the lilies of Christian purity, and by the roses of the
Saviour's atonement, by the roes and by the hinds of the field, we
charge you who are lovers of Jesus, to do valiantly in the Holy War,
for truth and righteousness, for the kingdom and crown jewels of your
Master. Onward! "for the battle is not yours but God's."

CAN A SAINT SLANDER GOD?

For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him

Jesus told the parable of the talents recorded in Matthew 25 as a
warning that it is possible for us to misjudge our capacity. This
parable has not to do with natural gifts, but with the Pentecostal
gift of the Holy Ghost. We must not measure our spiritual capacity by
education or by intellect; our capacity in spiritual things is
measured by the promises of God. If we get less than God wants us to
have, before long we will slander Him as the servant slandered his
master: "You expect more than You give me power to do; You demand too
much of me, I cannot stand true to You where I am placed." When it is
a question of God's Almighty Spirit, never say "I can't." Never let
the limitation of natural ability come in. If we have received the
Holy Spirit, God expects the work of the Holy Spirit to be manifested
in us.

The servant justified himself in everything he did and condemned his
lord on every point - "Your demand is out of all proportion to what
you give." Have we been slandering God by daring to worry when He has
said: "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and
all these things shall be added unto you"? Worrying means exactly
what this servant implied - "I know You mean to leave me in the
lurch." The person who is lazy naturally is always captious - "I
haven't had a decent chance," and the one who is lazy spiritually is
captious with God. Lazy people always strike out on an independent
line.

Never forget that our capacity in spiritual matters is measured by
the promises of God. Is God able to fulfil His promises? Our answer
depends on whether we have received the Holy Spirit.

Hands-on Provision


All the people ate and were full. After the people finished
eating, the followers filled twelve baskets with the pieces
of bread and fish that were not eaten. There were about 5,000
men there that ate.

-- Mark 6:42-44 (ERV)


KEY THOUGHT:
Mark makes it clear that this was an incredible miracle of provision.
People were satisfied. Five thousand ate. Bread and fish were left over
even though they started with only 5 loaves and 2 fish. However, we may
miss the most important part of the story if we do not pay attention.
There are 12 baskets of leftovers; one basket for each apostle. Each of
them was able to touch this miracle with his own hands. When we offer
Jesus our meager resources, he enables us to use those resources to
bless others and we get to have a hands-on experience of his grace.


TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, please give me faith to trust that Jesus can make my feeble
resources, skills, and intellect more than sufficient to meet the needs
of those you want me to serve. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

from God and you simply thanked and praised him? Why not use today
as a day of thanks and praise? Don't ask for anything; just praise
and thank the Father! Praise him for who he is, what he has done,
and what he is going to do! Thank him for blessing you, saving you,
and bringing you into his glory! Let today be a day of thanks and
praise.

PRAYER:
You are worthy, dear Father, of every word of praise my
imagination can find and every word of thanks my tongue can
pronounce. You are glorious, majestic, holy, mighty, and awesome.
You are patient, forgiving, sacrificial, loving, and tender. You
are more than I can imagine and closer than my very breath. Your
greatness exhausts my vocabulary and your generosity overwhelms my
heart. Please be glorified in my every thought, deed, and word. In
Jesus' name I praise you. Amen.
