VERSE:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have
seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the
Father, full of grace and truth.
-- John 1:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=John+1:14

THOUGHT:
God's message wasn't content to stay confined to a book, a
prophecy, or a scroll. Praise God! This Message, this Word, took on
flesh and blood and bones! Praise God Almighty! This Message, this
Word, didn't remain far off, distantly holy and unapproachable.
Praise the LORD, God of Israel! He came to us in human flesh,
bringing us love, hope, redemption, mercy, salvation, joy...

PRAYER:
Almighty God, I praise and exalt your name above all names. Your
love is greater than the volume of all of our oceans. Your mercy
stretches farther than the great expanses of our known space. Your
grace is beyond calculation. Your salvation is marvelous beyond
compare. Thank you for blessing me with all of these in Jesus, who
came and lived in my world so I can make my home in yours. In the
name of Christ the Lord, I praise you. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thought: Nativity 6

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. Luke 2:8 NIV

I love the shepherds. I have to be honest, apart from the baby Jesus, the shepherds may be one of my favorite characters in the nativity scene. If you think about it, the shepherds are the first evangelist! Best of all, the shepherds are a perfect picture of what Christ did for us.

There wasn't a much lower status job than shepherding. Of course one could have been a tax collector or prostitute, but other than that, if you wanted a job with little prestige, you might have been a shepherd.

Isn't it ironic then, that out of the whole city of Bethlehem, crowded with people because of the census, that Jesus appeared to some lonely shepherds who were keeping watch over their flocks at night?

Perhaps this should tell us something about this baby who was being born? Maybe it should say that He came to the "least of these", so that you and I, who might sometimes seem unworthy, could know that Christ came for us too! If Christ could come to the shepherds, He could surely come to us!

Perhaps the shepherds are to remind us that Christ comes to those who make themselves available to Him. I mean, what else did the shepherds have to do that night...other than watch the stars and count sheep. The shepherds were quiet long enough for the angel to appear. Maybe the busyness of Bethlehem kept others from hearing the call? Maybe it should remind us to be still before the Lord?

Perhaps also the shepherds point to the awesome gift that God was bringing to the world through Christ. As I understand it, these were the shepherds keeping "watch over the flocks nearby". The nearby seems to indicate that this was the field closest to the temple, where the sacrificial lambs were kept. These shepherds were watching over sheep to be slaughtered for reptence of sins. In other words, (are you catching on now?) these shepherds were about to be out of a job! Jesus was the perfect, ultimate, permanent sacrifice!

Whatever the reason, and I'm sure there are many, the shepherds played a very vital role that first Christmas. As you look at the shepherds in your nativity scene, let them remind you of the wonderful plan God had for you and me through the birth of His Son.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Hidden Treasures, by Phil Ware

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her
heart (Luke 2:19 TNIV). But his mother treasured all these things
in her heart (Luke 2:51).

We are fascinated about stories of hidden treasure. Many of the
blockbuster movies over the last several decades have revolved around
this theme -- the Indiana Jones movies, The Mummy movies, and more
recently the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and the National Treasure
series.

As kids, we were fascinated about finding old things and we would look
at them carefully hoping to find some secret drawer or hidden space
where there might be a secret treasure! As older adults, we have to
admit we, too, check old objects and old places for such secret spaces.

There is an allure that speaks to us in some primal place in our hearts
about hidden treasure. So when Luke twice records that Mary treasured
the wonder of Jesus' birth in her heart (Luke 2:19; Luke 2:51),
something resonates inside of us. We can understand. Our heart skips a
beat when Luke tells us that Mary intentionally treasured these moments
and hid them away in heart. This sounds so true to our world and to our
experience!

The mystery, the wonder, the bewilderment, the delight, the fear, and
the struggle as a new mom to God's Son are secreted in this hiding
place of Mary's heart. She apparently opened this hidden treasure for
Luke as he carefully researched the story of Jesus before publishing
the Gospel of Luke (Luke 1:1-4).

Mary's testimony to the beloved physician, Luke, has the feel of
authenticity. Her memories, recorded by Luke at the prompting of the
Holy Spirit, are nudges to us. These promptings invite us into the
basic humanity and simple richness of this story. We enter a mystery
beyond our comprehension, but told in a story so simple and real, we
know in our guts that it is true.

Let's not ...

So in the hurry of our season, the rush of travel, the frantic
preparation for guests, the busy preparation of food, the mad dash back
to the mall for the last minute gift, the dread of re-awakened family
conflicts, and the stress of relationships, let's not ...

* ... not sweat the small stuff!

* ... not miss the tender moments of grace!

* ... not lose the opportunity to lock away treasures in our own
hearts!

Let's celebrate that true treasures are ours because of Jesus.

Morning & Evening -- 2 Corinthians 8:9 and Isaiah 40:5

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, December 24, 2007

MORNING:

"For your sakes he became poor."
-- 2 Corinthians 8:9

The Lord Jesus Christ was eternally rich, glorious, and exalted; but
"though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor." As the rich
saint cannot be true in his communion with his poor brethren unless of
his substance he ministers to their necessities, so (the same rule
holding with the head as between the members), it is impossible that
our Divine Lord could have had fellowship with us unless he had
imparted to us of his own abounding wealth, and had become poor to make
us rich. Had he remained upon his throne of glory, and had we continued
in the ruins of the fall without receiving his salvation, communion
would have been impossible on both sides. Our position by the fall,
apart from the covenant of grace, made it as impossible for fallen man
to communicate with God as it is for Belial to be in concord with
Christ. In order, therefore, that communion might be compassed, it was
necessary that the rich kinsman should bestow his estate upon his poor
relatives, that the righteous Saviour should give to his sinning
brethren of his own perfection, and that we, the poor and guilty,
should receive of his fulness grace for grace; that thus in giving and
receiving, the One might descend from the heights, and the other ascend
from the depths, and so be able to embrace each other in true and
hearty fellowship. Poverty must be enriched by him in whom are infinite
treasures before it can venture to commune; and guilt must lose itself
in imputed and imparted righteousness ere the soul can walk in
fellowship with purity. Jesus must clothe his people in his own
garments, or he cannot admit them into his palace of glory; and he must
wash them in his own blood, or else they will be too defiled for the
embrace of his fellowship.

O believer, herein is love! For your sake the Lord Jesus "became poor"
that he might lift you up into communion with himself.

EVENING:

"The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall
see it together."
-- Isaiah 40:5

We anticipate the happy day when the whole world shall be converted to
Christ; when the gods of the heathen shall be cast to the moles and the
bats; when Romanism shall be exploded, and the crescent of Mohammed
shall wane, never again to cast its baleful rays upon the nations; when
kings shall bow down before the Prince of Peace, and all nations shall
call their Redeemer blessed. Some despair of this. They look upon the
world as a vessel breaking up and going to pieces, never to float
again. We know that the world and all that is therein is one day to be
burnt up, and afterwards we look for new heavens and for a new earth;
but we cannot read our Bibles without the conviction that-

"Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
Does his successive journeys run."

We are not discouraged by the length of his delays; we are not
disheartened by the long period which he allots to the church in which
to struggle with little success and much defeat. We believe that God
will never suffer this world, which has once seen Christ's blood shed
upon it, to be always the devil's stronghold. Christ came hither to
deliver this world from the detested sway of the powers of darkness.
What a shout shall that be when men and angels shall unite to cry
"Hallelujah, hallelujah, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth!" What a
satisfaction will it be in that day to have had a share in the fight,
to have helped to break the arrows of the bow, and to have aided in
winning the victory for our Lord! Happy are they who trust themselves
with this conquering Lord, and who fight side by side with him, doing
their little in his name and by his strength! How unhappy are those on
the side of evil! It is a losing side, and it is a matter wherein to
lose is to lose and to be lost for ever. On whose side are you?

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Hidden Life"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 24, 2007

THE HIDDEN LIFE

Your life is hid with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:3

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=col+3:3&sr=1

The Spirit of God witnesses to the simple almighty security of the
life hid with Christ in God and this is continually brought out in
the Epistles. We talk as if it were the most precarious thing to live
the sanctified life; it is the most secure thing, because it has
Almighty God in and behind it. The most precarious thing is to try
and live without God. If we are born again it is the easiest thing to
live in right relationship to God and the most difficult thing to go
wrong, if only we will heed God's warnings and keep in the light.

When we think of being delivered from sin, of being filled with the
Spirit, and of walking in the light, we picture the peak of a great
mountain, very high and wonderful, and we say - "Oh, but I could
never live up there!" But when we do get there by God's grace, we
find it is not a mountain peak, but a plateau where there is ample
room to live and to grow. "Thou hast enlarged my steps under me."

When you really see Jesus, I defy you to doubt Him. When He says -
"Let not your heart be troubled," if you see Him I defy you to
trouble your mind, it is a moral impossibility to doubt when He is
there. Every time you get into personal contact with Jesus, His words
are real. "My peace I give unto you," it is a peace all over from the
crown of the head to the sole of the feet, an irrepressible
confidence. "Your life is hid with Christ in God," and the
imperturbable peace of Jesus Christ is imparted to you.

CLOTHED WITH CHRIST

Colossians 3:12-14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Colossians+3:12-14

Dear Father,

Grant that we may clothe ourselves with Christ, for he is a
garment of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness and patience,
forbearance and forgiveness.

Above all, clothe us with his love, which will bind us together in
perfect harmony.

In the name of Jesus. Amen.

WJD! -- Reactions to the Cross -- Luke 23:47-49

Reactions to the Cross

The army officer there saw what happened. He praised God,
saying, "I know this man was a good man!" Many people had
come out of the city to see this thing. When the people saw
it, they felt very sorry and left. The people who were close
friends of Jesus were there. Also, there were some women that
had followed Jesus from Galilee. They all stood far away from
the cross and watched these things.

-- Luke 23:47-49 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
What happens in your heart when you think of Jesus on the Cross? The
seasoned Roman officer handling the execution praised God and knew
Jesus was not guilty of any crime. The crowd went home with deep
sorrow. Jesus' friends watched from a distance. Which one best
describes your reaction? Why? Don't you find it amazing that probably
the least preferable reaction, the least exemplary, was the reaction of
Jesus' friends. Let's not just be observers of the Cross, but people
who are deeply sorrowed by ours sins that took Jesus to the Cross.
However, in our sorrow, let's make sure we don't let grief consume us.
Instead, let's praise God for his grace and the salvation he has
provided for us. Then, rather than going into hiding like the fearful
friends of Jesus, let's go share the grace with others.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Almighty God, it breaks my heart that Jesus had to die as a
sacrifice for sin ... especially my sin. However, I praise you for your
plan of grace, for your desire to provide mercy at the expense of your
own heartbreak, and for your overwhelming love for people like me. In
Jesus' name. Amen.
