=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Prayers Are Ended, by Tom Norvell

In the New International Version of the Holy Bible, Psalm 72:20 reads:
"This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse." The Amplified Bible
reads like this: "The prayers of David son of Jesse are ended."

In the two previous verses David concludes his prayers with these
words:

Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,

who alone does marvelous deeds.

Praise be to his glorious name forever;

may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

Amen and Amen

(Psalms 72:18-19 NIV).

There may be no great theological significance to the statement, "The
prayers of David son of Jesse are ended"; however, they prompt me to
ask: How will I conclude my prayers? I'm not talking about the prayer
at the end of the day or the prayer before a meal or the prayer before
I write an article or the prayer before I preach a sermon or the prayer
at a graveside or the prayer at a bedside. How will conclude my
prayers? When it's all over and, as John Ortberg says, "It all goes
back in the box," how will I conclude my prayers? (From John Ortberg's
When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box)

Will I be making one more request for some physical need to be met?
Will I be asking for one more favor? Will I be pleading my case? Will I
be making an excuse for not living the way I should have, or the way I
wanted to but didn't? Will I be asking Him a question about why He
acted in one way, or why He did not act in another?

I wonder how I will end my prayers.

David had done many wonderful things in his life. He had done some
awful things in his life. He had accomplished much. He had seen a lot.
He had missed a lot. He had messed up in big and small ways. He had
sinned and been forgiven. He had seen God's glory and God's great
deeds. So have I.

Yet, when his prayers were concluded (at least those we have recorded
for us in Psalms), he did not speak of his deeds, his needs, or make a
request to succeed. He concludes with:

Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,

who alone does marvelous deeds.

Praise be to his glorious name forever;

I hope I will.

may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

Amen and Amen

(Psalms 72:18-19 NIV).

I hope I will. I don't know when the prayers of Tom Norvell will end,
but I hope that the time between now and then will be lived in such a
way that my prayers will conclude with these words:

Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,

who alone does marvelous deeds.

Praise be to his glorious name forever;

may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

Amen and Amen

(Psalms 72:18-19 NIV).

I hope you will, too.

Morning & Evening -- Luke 23:31 and Psalms 23:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

MORNING:

"If they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done
in the dry?"
-- Luke 23:31

Among other interpretations of this suggestive question, the following
is full of teaching: "If the innocent substitute for sinners, suffer
thus, what will be done when the sinner himself -the dry tree-shall
fall into the hands of an angry God?" When God saw Jesus in the
sinner's place, he did not spare him; and when he finds the
unregenerate without Christ, he will not spare them. O sinner, Jesus
was led away by his enemies: so shall you be dragged away by fiends to
the place appointed for you. Jesus was deserted of God; and if he, who
was only imputedly a sinner, was deserted, how much more shall you be?
"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" what an awful shriek! But what shall be
your cry when you shall say, "O God! O God! why hast thou forsaken me?"
and the answer shall come back, "Because ye have set at nought all my
counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your
calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh." If God spared not his own
Son, how much less will he spare you! What whips of burning wire will
be yours when conscience shall smite you with all its terrors. Ye
richest, ye merriest, ye most self-righteous sinners-who would stand in
your place when God shall say, "Awake, O sword, against the man that
rejected me; smite him, and let him feel the smart for ever?" Jesus was
spit upon: sinner, what shame will be yours! We cannot sum up in one
word all the mass of sorrows which met upon the head of Jesus who died
for us, therefore it is impossible for us to tell you what streams,
what oceans of grief must roll over your spirit if you die as you now
are. You may die so, you may die now. By the agonies of Christ, by his
wounds and by his blood, do not bring upon yourselves the wrath to
come! Trust in the Son of God, and you shall never die.

EVENING:

"I will fear no evil: for thou art with me."
-- Psalms 23:4

Behold, how independent of outward circumstances the Holy Ghost can
make the Christian! What a bright light may shine within us when it is
all dark without! How firm, how happy, how calm, how peaceful we may
be, when the world shakes to and fro, and the pillars of the earth are
removed! Even death itself, with all its terrible influences, has no
power to suspend the music of a Christian's heart, but rather makes
that music become more sweet, more clear, more heavenly, till the last
kind act which death can do is to let the earthly strain melt into the
heavenly chorus, the temporal joy into the eternal bliss! Let us have
confidence, then, in the blessed Spirit's power to comfort us. Dear
reader, are you looking forward to poverty? Fear not; the divine Spirit
can give you, in your want, a greater plenty than the rich have in
their abundance. You know not what joys may be stored up for you in the
cottage around which grace will plant the roses of content. Are you
conscious of a growing failure of your bodily powers? Do you expect to
suffer long nights of languishing and days of pain? O be not sad! That
bed may become a throne to you. You little know how every pang that
shoots through your body may be a refining fire to consume your dross-a
beam of glory to light up the secret parts of your soul. Are the eyes
growing dim? Jesus will be your light. Do the ears fail you? Jesus'
name will be your soul's best music, and his person your dear delight.
Socrates used to say, "Philosophers can be happy without music;" and
Christians can be happier than philosophers when all outward causes of
rejoicing are withdrawn. In thee, my God, my heart shall triumph, come
what may of ills without! By thy power, O blessed Spirit, my heart
shall be exceeding glad, though all things should fail me here below.

My Utmost For His Highest : "His Resurrection Destiny"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 8, 2008

HIS RESURRECTION DESTINY

Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to
enter into His glory?

Luke 24:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+24:2&sr=1

Our Lord's Cross is the gateway into His life: His Resurrection means
that He has power now to convey His life to me. When I am born again
from above, I receive from the Risen Lord His very life.

Our Lord's Resurrection destiny is to bring "many sons unto glory."
The fulfilling of His destiny gives Him the right to make us sons and
daughters of God. We are never in the relationship to God that the
Son of God is in; but we are brought by the Son into the relation of
sonship. When Our Lord rose from the dead, He rose to an absolutely
new life, to a life He did not live before He was incarnate. He rose
to a life that had never been before; and His resurrection means for
us that we are raised to His risen life, not to our old life. One day
we shall have a body like unto His glorious body, but we can know now
the efficacy of His resurrection and walk in newness of life. "I
would know Him in the power of His resurrection."

"As Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give
eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him." "Holy Spirit" is the
experimental name for Eternal Life working in human beings here and
now. The Holy Spirit is the Deity in proceeding power Who applies the
Atonement to our experience. Thank God it is gloriously and
majestically true that the Holy Ghost can work in us the very nature
of Jesus if we will obey Him.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Stretching Two

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Stretching Two
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Luke 10:3 NIV

Recently my wife and I were in a restaurant. It was a Sunday night; a church night for some in the restaurant. There was one large table of couples who had obviously just come from church. (I actually knew some of them.) They were giving the waitress a hard time. It was obvious she was having a bad day beyond just this table, but they werent making her day better.

I like to leave my waitresses feeling better than when I get to the restaurant, so I tip well and I try to be kind to them; even make them laugh sometimes. My wife and I have started asking for limes with our water. Just for fun I began to challenge our waitress to eat a lime with me. If youve never tried this, they are often sourer than lemons. She refused, said she needed to work. I kept encouraging her in a nice, teasing way. After several attempts to get her to open up, she comes back to our table to fill our water glass . This time she finally went to smile at me. When she opened her mouth, her teeth were covered with a quarter sectioned lime peeling she had been hiding behind her lips. The three of us, my wife, the waitress and me, broke out in hearty laughter.

She found out later that I am a pastorshe couldnt believe it. I was nothing like the table of churched people before us. She asked, What kind of church are you from? I think she suspects it is the kind that loves people who are having a bad day. By building a relationship with her first, I was able to show her that not all believers are ungrateful customers. That was her impression when we arrived.

We left my new friend laughing with a nice tip; a business card in case she ever needed a good laugh or someone to talk with. I learned another valuable lesson of reaching people for Christ who may not even want to be reached.

EARTHLY RELATIONSHIPS

1 Corinthians 7:36-40

Dear Father, head of our one enduring spiritual family,

We live in our bodies and in families and we have strong needs for
these very human things.

Thank you for consenting to our involvement with these, as long as
we possess them without grasping or coveting, and as long as we
love you more than these.

Whatever freedoms we have, let us exercise them by abiding in the
Lord. Grant us the grace to follow Paul's teaching, since he spoke
as one having the Spirit of the Lord.

In the name of Jesus I lift this prayer to you. Amen.

WJD! -- Blocking Miracles -- Mark 6:4-6

Blocking Miracles

Jesus said to the people, "Other people give honor to a
prophet. But in his own town with his own people and in his
own home, a prophet does not get honor." Jesus was not able
to do many miracles in that town. The only miracles he did
were to heal some sick people by putting his hands on them.
Jesus was very surprised because those people did not have
faith. Then Jesus went to other villages in that area and
taught.

-- Mark 6:4-6 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus is in an important religious place with people who know him well.
His intentions are good and he has great power to heal and to help. Yet
in this place, he couldn't do nearly as much as he wanted because the
people refused to believe and didn't expect him to be able to act. How
often have well-intentioned religious people blocked the power of God
to work among them because they have refused to believe in Jesus'
power? More often than it ever should have!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, forgive us ... forgive me, for not expecting you to act in
powerful ways to bring deliverance, healing and blessing in the lives
of your people. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : James 4:7-8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 8, 2008

VERSE:
Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will
flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash
your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
-- James 4:7-8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=James+4:7-8

THOUGHT:
James always packs a lot into a small space. Let's focus on the
center of this call to holiness: let's draw ourselves closer to
God. When we come into God's presence and draw close to him, we
know our thoughts, our motives, and our behaviors will be seen for
what they are in the light of his holiness and righteousness. At
the same time, we know that the devil is forced out by the radiance
of our Father's holy life. Let's seek after God. Let's long to draw
near to him. Let's ask him to cleanse us and make us wholly his and
make us completely holy!

PRAYER:
Righteous Father, thank you for your love and forgiveness. Now,
dear Father, help me as I seek to draw closer to you and as I seek
to know you better. Purify my heart of any duplicity or secret sin.
Cleanse my conscience and empower me to be an example of your grace
and holiness. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
