=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

East from West, by Warren Baldwin

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his
love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us (Psalm 103:11-12).

This verse is a cool drink of grace for someone sweating under the
intense heat of sin. It is freeing for someone struggling under the
oppressive weight of guilt. It is refreshing, like a gust of cool air,
for someone suffocating from shame and embarrassment.

How far is the east from the west? Well, that can't be calculated. The
distance is impossible to measure. Not only is the east far from the
west, it runs in a different direction, meaning the two can never meet.
"East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet"
(Kipling, "The Ballad of East and West").

That means that when God removes our sin, it is so far away from us it
can never entangle and ensnare us again. It is gone and traveling in an
opposite direction from us. Never shall we meet that sin again.

Of course, we will likely sin again. That is why we keep a penitent
heart. That is why we keep crying out, "Lord, forgive me (us)." In his
kindness God keeps forgiving! "He does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities" (Psalm 103:10). In his grace
he removes our sin as far away from us as the east is from the west.

There is another angle to this verse. In the original language of the
Old Testament the word for "from us" also means "from himself" -- i.e.,
God has removed the sin from us personally and from our relationship
with him, as well (Holladay, "Psalms Through 3,000 Years," p.325). So,
not only does God remove our sin "from us," he also removes it from
himself. Our forgiven sin is as far from God as the east is distanced
from the west. Our forgiven sin is completely and irrevocably removed
from God's presence. Do you realize how powerful that reality is?

God can remove your sin!

Now there is a good reason for guilt. Guilt is the realization that we
are sinners. It can be the motivating factor that drives us to our
knees before a trusted friend to pour out our hearts. It is the driving
force behind our cry for mercy before the throne of God. Guilt moves us
back to God and opens the door for our sin to be forgiven and hearts
cleansed. But once we have poured out our hearts to a Christian brother
or sister and to God, guilt has served its purpose. The sin behind the
guilt has been sent east as we travel west. We need to send our shame
packing with it. If we don't trust God to remove our guilt from us, it
can become toxic and become personal shame.

Personal shame is a constant companion to many. Shame is the feeling
that deep down inside ourselves we are much more sinful, evil, and
despicable than the image we cast to the world outside ourselves. When
we aren't honest with God and others about our guilt, shame begins to
destroy us. Shame is what causes us to turn our head and avoid eye
contact. It is what makes us cry in private rather than share our sin
and pain with someone else lest they reject us. Shame is that feeling
that we are dirty and will never be good enough for ourselves, others,
or God. Shame is not trusting God to forgive us and cleanse us of our
guilt. Shame is one of the most potent self-destructive secret
attitudes.

Because of shame, a husband could not look his wife in the eye and beg,
"I am sorry for my sin, please forgive me." He left her instead. Shame
caused an abused 14 year old girl to abort her baby and begin a run of
dangerous relationships for ten years. Shame drove a young drug addict,
whose baby ate some of her drugs, to the brink of insanity because of
her irresponsibility.

I wish I could go back to all three of these people and say, "Hey,
guess what! God can remove your sin. And with that, he can remove your
guilt. When he removes it from you, he also removes it from his
presence. That means God welcomes you into his presence. There is not
one sin, not one bad decision, not one instance of abuse that you have
suffered, that has to keep you from the loving compassion of God."

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our
transgressions from himself."

That means we can lift our heads, look God in the eye, and say, "Thank
you!" It means we can live again, without the shame!

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 26:39 and John 17:24

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, March 22, 2008

MORNING:

"And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and
prayed."
-- Matthew 26:39

There are several instructive features in our Saviour's prayer in his
hour of trial. It was lonely prayer. He withdrew even from his three
favoured disciples. Believer, be much in solitary prayer, especially in
times of trial. Family prayer, social prayer, prayer in the Church,
will not suffice, these are very precious, but the best beaten spice
will smoke in your censer in your private devotions, where no ear hears
but God's.

It was humble prayer. Luke says he knelt, but another evangelist says
he "fell on his face." Where, then, must be THY place, thou humble
servant of the great Master? What dust and ashes should cover thy head!
Humility gives us good foot-hold in prayer. There is no hope of
prevalence with God unless we abase ourselves that he may exalt us in
due time.

It was filial prayer. "Abba, Father." You will find it a stronghold in
the day of trial to plead your adoption. You have no rights as a
subject, you have forfeited them by your treason; but nothing can
forfeit a child's right to a father's protection. Be not afraid to say,
"My Father, hear my cry."

Observe that it was persevering prayer. He prayed three times. Cease
not until you prevail. Be as the importunate widow, whose continual
coming earned what her first supplication could not win. Continue in
prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.

Lastly, it was the prayer of resignation. "Nevertheless, not as I will,
but as thou wilt." Yield, and God yields. Let it be as God wills, and
God will determine for the best. Be thou content to leave thy prayer in
his hands, who knows when to give, and how to give, and what to give,
and what to withhold. So pleading, earnestly, importunately, yet with
humility and resignation, thou shalt surely prevail.

EVENING:

"Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be
with me where I am."
-- John 17:24

O death! why dost thou touch the tree beneath whose spreading branches
weariness hath rest? Why dost thou snatch away the excellent of the
earth, in whom is all our delight? If thou must use thine axe, use it
upon the trees which yield no fruit; thou mightest be thanked then. But
why wilt thou fell the goodly cedars of Lebanon? O stay thine axe, and
spare the righteous. But no, it must not be; death smites the goodliest
of our friends; the most generous, the most prayerful, the most holy,
the most devoted must die. And why? It is through Jesus' prevailing
prayer-"Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with
me where I am." It is that which bears them on eagle's wings to heaven.
Every time a believer mounts from this earth to paradise, it is an
answer to Christ's prayer. A good old divine remarks, "Many times Jesus
and his people pull against one another in prayer. You bend your knee
in prayer and say 'Father, I will that thy saints be with me where I
am'; Christ says, 'Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given
me, be with me where I am.'" Thus the disciple is at cross-purposes
with his Lord. The soul cannot be in both places: the beloved one
cannot be with Christ and with you too. Now, which pleader shall win
the day? If you had your choice; if the King should step from his
throne, and say, "Here are two supplicants praying in opposition to one
another, which shall be answered?" Oh! I am sure, though it were agony,
you would start from your feet, and say, "Jesus, not my will, but thine
be done." You would give up your prayer for your loved one's life, if
you could realize the thoughts that Christ is praying in the opposite
direction-"Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be
with me where I am." Lord, thou shalt have them. By faith we let them
go.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Burning Heart"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 22, 2008

THE BURNING HEART

Did not our heart burn within us?

Luke 24:32

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+24:32&sr=1

We need to learn this secret of the burning heart. Suddenly Jesus
appears to us, the fires are kindled, we have wonderful visions, then
we have to learn to keep the secret of the burning heart that will go
through anything. It is the dull, bald, dreary, commonplace day, with
commonplace duties and people, that kills the burning heart unless we
have learned the secret of abiding in Jesus.

Much of our distress as Christians comes not because of sin, but
because we are ignorant of the laws of our own nature. For instance,
the only test as to whether we ought to allow an emotion to have its
way is to see what the outcome of the emotion will be. Push it to its
logical conclusion, and if the outcome is something God would
condemn, allow it no more way. But if it be an emotion kindled by the
Spirit of God and you do not let that emotion have its right issue in
your life, it will react on a lower level. That is the way
sentimentalists are made. The higher the emotion is, the deeper the
degradation will be, if it is not worked out on its proper level. If
the Spirit of God has stirred you, make as many things inevitable as
possible, let the consequences be what they will. We cannot stay on
the mount of transfiguration, but we must obey the light we received
there; we must act it out. When God gives a vision, transact business
on that line, no matter what it costs.

"We cannot kindle when we will
The fire which in the heart resides,
The spirit bloweth and is still,
In mystery our soul abides;
But tasks in hours of insight will'd
Can be through hours of gloom fulfill'd."

Praying with Paul : "The One Foundation"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

THE ONE FOUNDATION

1 Corinthians 3:9-13

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+3:9-13

Dear Father, designer of destiny,

Thank you for your concern for us. We are the field that you tend,
the building that you build. You build us as living stones upon the
one foundation, Jesus Christ. No other foundation is provided. No
other is adequate.

But Father, I am concerned. As I build on this foundation, and as
I am built on it, may the quality of my life be such that it will
survive the purifying fire of judgment. I don't want my life to be
like wood, hay, or stubble. I want it to be like gold, silver and
precious stones, so that when my work is tested by fire, it will be
proven to be durable, wrought in you and not in my own vanity. Make
all of us into what you want us to be, for such is our blessedness.

In the blessed name of Jesus I ask. Amen.

WJD! -- They Knew They Were Whipped -- Mark 5:10-12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

They Knew They Were Whipped

The spirits inside the man begged Jesus again and again not
to send them out of that area. A large herd of pigs was
eating on a hill near there. The evil spirits begged Jesus,
"Send us to the pigs. Let us go into them."

-- Mark 5:10-12 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
The evil spirits begged! While they overpowered the man and struck fear
in the people who lived nearby, they begged Jesus! They knew they were
doomed in the face of Jesus' power. Rather than face Jesus, a legion of
demons versus one man of God, they begged to be sent into unclean pigs.
Reminds me of an old song: "He signed my deed with his atoning blood.
He ever lives to make his promise good. Though all the hosts of hell
march in to make a second claim, they all march out at the mention of
his name. ... Jesus!"

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy God, forgive me for not drawing near to your Son when I faced
temptations in the past. Please remind me to draw near to him when I am
tempted in the future. Give me the courage, dear Father, to confess the
name of Jesus and to know that even the mention of his name in faith
has great power. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : Luke 3:22

March 22, 2008

VERSE:
... the Holy Spirit descended on him [Jesus] in bodily form like
a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love;
with you I am well pleased."
-- Luke 3:22

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Luke+3:22

THOUGHT:
God spoke these wonderful words to his Son when Jesus was
baptized. God feels the same about us when we follow our Savior's
example and are baptized, too! Jesus pours out his Spirit on us
(Titus 3:4-7) guaranteeing that we are God's children (cf.
Ephesians 1:13-14). No matter what Satan may do to make us doubt it
(cf. Luke 4:3), we can confidently know that we are God's beloved
children, with whom he is well pleased! Because of the Spirit, we
can call God our Abba Father (Galatians 4:6) knowing that the
Spirit intercedes for us making even our inexpressible thoughts
known to our Father (Romans 8:26-27).

PRAYER:
Abba Father, I thank you for making me your child and making me
an heir of your gracious inheritance. Please give me confidence to
withstand the lies of Satan who tries to make me doubt my
relationship with you. Thank you for your Spirit who helps even now
by interceding for me as I pray. In Jesus' name. Amen.
