=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Doing the Best I Can, by Mike Barres

Sometimes, I'm just doing the best I can: I might be at the end of my
rope, but I just try to tie a knot and hold on! Many of us are familiar
with a couple of the old sayings about this kind of commitment:

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going!" "Quitters never
win, and winners never quit."

We talk about this attitude and commitment in terms of perseverance.
Webster's Dictionary defines perseverance this way:

continued, patient effort. (It) implies a continuing to do
something in spite of difficulties, obstacles etc.

Our church was on a fast, and I noticed something. There were some
things that I had been trying to "pressing on through." Then the Lord
took care of this situation, and I believe it is because I had prayed
about them during our fast. You see I had been persevering, but not
praying.

Perseverance is good, but we must not forget to pray about our burdens
and struggles. James said to us many years ago: "[Y]ou do not have
because you do not ask" (James 4:2 NKJV). God can handle things that we
are powerless to change. The disciples had been trying to cast out a
demon and were not successful. When they asked Jesus why they couldn't
do it and He could, the Lord told them: "This kind does not go out
except by prayer and fasting" (Matthew 17:21).

Don't despair and don't quit!

When we talk about someone doing things in terms of "his own strength,"
we are usually referring to a person who is proud and self sufficient.
However, this can also apply to those of us who "keep pressing on," but
don't ask the Lord to help us with our trial or burden.

If we aren't careful and keep trying to walk in our own strength, we
can get in to a defeated, victim mentality when things don't work out.
We might think, "Why is all of this happening to me? There's nothing I
can do about it! I'm struggling, but I'm just going to keep doing the
best I can."

Let's remember that there is something else we can do in our times of
struggle and defeat. We can pray and believe that God can and will do
what we can't.

If you are in the middle of a tough season and facing a trying time,
don't despair and don't quit. You need to persevere, but don't forget
to fast and pray, trusting that God can do those things that you can't
do. Just watch and see!

"Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He
may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He
cares for you." (1 Peter 5:6-7)

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 66:20 and Philippians 1:27

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, May 24, 2008

MORNING:

"Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer."
-- Psalms 66:20

In looking back upon the character of our prayers, if we do it
honestly, we shall be filled with wonder that God has ever answered
them. There may be some who think their prayers worthy of acceptance-as
the Pharisee did; but the true Christian, in a more enlightened
retrospect, weeps over his prayers, and if he could retrace his steps
he would desire to pray more earnestly. Remember, Christian, how cold
thy prayers have been. When in thy closet thou shouldst have wrestled
as Jacob did; but instead thereof, thy petitions have been faint and
few-far removed from that humble, believing, persevering faith, which
cries, "I will not let thee go except thou bless me." Yet, wonderful to
say, God has heard these cold prayers of thine, and not only heard, but
answered them. Reflect also, how infrequent have been thy prayers,
unless thou hast been in trouble, and then thou hast gone often to the
mercy-seat: but when deliverance has come, where has been thy constant
supplication? Yet, notwithstanding thou hast ceased to pray as once
thou didst, God has not ceased to bless. When thou hast neglected the
mercy-seat, God has not deserted it, but the bright light of the
Shekinah has always been visible between the wings of the cherubim. Oh!
it is marvellous that the Lord should regard those intermittent spasms
of importunity which come and go with our necessities. What a God is he
thus to hear the prayers of those who come to him when they have
pressing wants, but neglect him when they have received a mercy; who
approach him when they are forced to come, but who almost forget to
address him when mercies are plentiful and sorrows are few. Let his
gracious kindness in hearing such prayers touch our hearts, so that we
may henceforth be found "Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit."

EVENING:

"Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of
Christ."
-- Philippians 1:27

The word "conversation" does not merely mean our talk and converse with
one another, but the whole course of our life and behaviour in the
world. The Greek word signifies the actions and the privileges of
citizenship: and thus we are commanded to let our actions, as citizens
of the New Jerusalem, be such as becometh the gospel of Christ. What
sort of conversation is this? In the first place, the gospel is very
simple. So Christians should be simple and plain in their habits. There
should be about our manner, our speech, our dress, our whole behaviour,
that simplicity which is the very soul of beauty. The gospel is
pre-eminently true, it is gold without dross; and the Christian's life
will be lustreless and valueless without the jewel of truth. The gospel
is a very fearless gospel, it boldly proclaims the truth, whether men
like it or not: we must be equally faithful and unflinching. But the
gospel is also very gentle. Mark this spirit in its Founder: "a bruised
reed he will not break." Some professors are sharper than a
thorn-hedge; such men are not like Jesus. Let us seek to win others by
the gentleness of our words and acts. The gospel is very loving. It is
the message of the God of love to a lost and fallen race. Christ's last
command to his disciples was, "Love one another." O for more real,
hearty union and love to all the saints; for more tender compassion
towards the souls of the worst and vilest of men! We must not forget
that the gospel of Christ is holy. It never excuses sin: it pardons it,
but only through an atonement. If our life is to resemble the gospel,
we must shun, not merely the grosser vices, but everything that would
hinder our perfect conformity to Christ. For his sake, for our own
sakes, and for the sakes of others, we must strive day by day to let
our conversation be more in accordance with his gospel.

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Delight Of Despair"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 24, 2008

THE DELIGHT OF DESPAIR

And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead.

Revelation 1:17

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=re+1:17&sr=1

It may be that like the apostle John you know Jesus Christ
intimately, when suddenly He appears with no familiar characteristic
at all, and the only thing you can do is to fall at His feet as dead.
There are times when God cannot reveal Himself in any other way than
in His majesty, and it is the awfulness of the vision which brings
you to the delight of despair; if you are ever to be raised up, it
must be by the hand of God.

"He laid His right hand upon me." In the midst of the awfulness, a
touch comes, and you know it is the right hand of Jesus Christ. The
right hand not of restraint nor of correction nor of chastisement,
but the right hand of the Everlasting Father. Whenever His hand is
laid upon you, it is ineffable peace and comfort, the sense that
"underneath are the everlasting arms," full of sustaining and comfort
and strength. When once His touch comes, nothing at all can cast you
into fear again. In the midst of all His ascended glory the Lord
Jesus comes to speak to an insignificant disciple, and to say - "Fear
not." His tenderness is ineffably sweet. Do I know Him like that?

Watch some of the things that strike despair. There is despair in
which there is no delight, no horizon, no hope of anything brighter;
but the delight of despair comes when I know that "in me (that is, in
my flesh) dwelleth no good thing." I delight to know that there is
that in me which must fall prostrate before God when He manifests
Himself, and if I am ever to be raised up it must be by the hand of
God. God can do nothing for me until I get to the limit of the
possible.

Praying with Paul : "A Dispensation of Glory"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

A DISPENSATION OF GLORY

2 Corinthians 3:7-16

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Corinthians+3:7-16

Dear Father,

What a glorious splendor Christ's gospel has! It is a dispensation
of glory! And why shouldn't the dispensation of the Spirit be
attended with greater splendor than that of the letter! How much
more splendid than the temporary glory of Moses is the permanent,
new covenant, the dispensation of righteousness through faith by
your grace!

I am so full of hope because of what you have done! I have such
boldness!

For in Christ the veil of secrecy and misunderstanding is taken
away. What you were intending in the Old Covenant becomes clear,
for your Holy Spirit reveals the Lord Jesus Christ as the hidden
meaning in it all. Christ the Lord is the Spirit, and where the
Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

In the name of Jesus and because it is his will, I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Don't Tell! -- Mark 8:29-30

Don't Tell!

Then Jesus asked, "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You
are the Christ." Jesus told the followers, "Don't tell any
person who I am."

-- Mark 8:29-30 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Jesus' warning seems bizarre to many folks today. However, if we follow
the story of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark, we realize that the people
who hear him want to define what it means for Jesus to be Messiah and
Son of God rather than letting God define it. So Jesus forbids and
warns those who catch a glimpse of his identity to not tell. He wants
to define what it means to be Messiah (the Christ) and Son of God. That
means going to a Cross, something that was beyond their comprehension.
(Notice Peter's reaction to this revelation in the verses that follow.)
The basic message for you and me is this: we must let Jesus define his
Messiahship and then re-define our lives as we follow him.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O Father, teach me to fully understand who your Son is and to follow
him without reservation, no matter what the personal cost may be. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

VERSE:
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful
nature with its passions and desires.
-- Galatians 5:24

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+5:24

THOUGHT:
When we became Christians, we died to the old person of sin and
were raised up a new person. While we have many of the same battles
with temptation, we also now have the power of the resurrection and
the Holy Spirit at work within us to help us.

PRAYER:
Righteous Father, help me keep the dead and cast-away sin of my
past far away from my heart and out of my life. May my life be a
holy sacrifice that is pleasing to you. In the name of my Savior,
Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Today's KJV Verse : Galatians 5:24

May 24, 2008

VERSE:
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the
affections and lusts.
-- Galatians 5:24

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Galatians+5:24&translation=kjv

Amen.

VELVET ELVIS: REPAINTING THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, by Rob Bell
In this provocative, hopeful book, Bell asks what the church might look
like if today's believers fully embraced "the way" of love, peace,
sharing possessions, compassion, risk, forgiveness, and harmony.
