Today's Verse : Psalm 100:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 14, 2009

VERSE:
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

-- Psalm 100:4
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+100:4

THOUGHT:
This is a psalm about entering into God's presence with
thanksgiving and praise. For God's New Covenant people, his Temple
is the church (1 Cor. 3:16) and our own bodies (1 Cor. 6:19). Let's
value and celebrate with joy our church family. Let's also glorify
God with our bodies! Let's give thanks and praise God's name in
public, in private, and in community.

PRAYER:
Father, I enter into the most holy place and approach you
because of the sacrifice of Jesus. I am thrilled to know you
listen. I am overjoyed to know you welcome me. I am glad to be with
you and to let you know how much I appreciate all that you have
done for me. Thank you for meeting me in this place of prayer until
I can come home to you and meet you face to face. In Jesus' name.
Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Daddy's Lap

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Daddy's Lap
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
But you, O God, DO see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. Psalm 10:14 NIV

The man was really just trying to be nice. The cute little boy cowered, however, into his Daddy's shoulder.

I remember when my son was younger, three or less, we would be in public and a stranger would come up to take notice of the cute little blonde boy in my arms. The more the person would try to get my son's attention, the more my son would hide his face. We called it shy, but it was really a son seeking protection in his father. Do you ever have need to seek your Father's protection? In life as we grow older, we see so many hardships. We endure struggles and heartaches. We are sometimes tempted to ask, Where is God in all this? Often we fail to recognize God in the midst of trials. (He really is there all the time!)

Dear friend, may I assure you of something today? Just as the Psalmist said, God does see trouble and grief. He is not oblivious to our pain. He is carefully watching over His children. At just the right time, God will literally take our struggles in His mighty hand and lift us up out of our pit of despair.

The Psalmist talks about the victim. Have you ever felt like a victim? Do you often feel there is nowhere to turn? Are you a victim of this sometimes rotten world? God wants to protect His children. God is looking for victims who will call upon His name.

Picture for a moment being a two-year old who has lost his parents in a crowded mall. How do you feel? Do you sometimes have that feeling in the world today? God wants to comfort the fatherless in their distress.

Climb up into the Fathers lap. Rest your weary head on His powerful shoulders. Cast your burdens upon Him. Tell Him you love Him and trust Him with all your heart! (You might even want to read the Bible together.) See if yo u don't feel the arms of God wrap tightly around you! It's a great feeling to be under the Fathers tender care!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Beyond the Call of Duty, by Rubel Shelly

When you hear of someone being "above the law" or "above the rules,"
what comes to mind? Perhaps the person who cut in front of you in
traffic; she must think she owns the road. Maybe the white-collar
crooks who poked holes in your retirement; they knew the rules about
insider trading and honest bookkeeping but simply decided to violate
them. Yes, there are people who break laws and breach the canons of
ethics. They don't care who gets hurt. They're only looking out for
themselves.

But, there is another way of being "above the rules." One can function
at a level higher than the rules demand. Maybe we'd say "above and
beyond" or "going beyond the call of duty." The person who borrows your
car to run a quick errand fills a near-empty gas tank before bringing
it back. A stranger stops to help when you are stranded beside the
highway. You put a quarter in a parking meter for the car next to yours
because you see the time has expired.

You can spot the difference between the two attitudes a mile away. The
former won't help with rush or crisis situations at work because "it's
not in my job description." The latter never bats an eye about pitching
in or staying late because the good of the company trumps convenience
and protectiveness.

Couples determined to work things out by the rules of fair play are a
counselor's nightmare. She doesn't think she's getting what she
deserves. He is convinced he is doing everything anybody could expect.
So the battle over rights and duties, expectations and demands is on.
Few couples wind up in that same office or in divorce court when he is
looking for ways to surprise her with kindness -- only to be outdone by
her creativity in showing how much she loves him.

Jesus was above the rules.

Churches are afflicted with the same problem. The term is "legalism"
for trying to fix, place, and set in order by laws. Its opposite is not
liberalism but "grace." By the rules of time and place, Jesus should
not have prepared food on the Sabbath or stood in the way of a mob
intent on stoning a woman who had been caught "in the very act" of
adultery.

Jesus was above the rules. He wasn't arrogant, self-centered, and
willing to break the laws of heaven or earth. But he knew that law's
higher purpose was always to protect, empower, and love people. Thus he
associated with, showed kindness to, and made disciples of people who
had been rejected by most.

We must guard against making the rules hateful by losing sight of
people.

For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love
your neighbor as yourself" (Galatians 5:14 TNIV).

Morning & Evening -- 1 Kings 22:48 and 2 Kings 6:9

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

MORNING:

"Jehoshaphat made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold:
but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber"
-- 1 Kings 22:48

Solomon's ships had returned in safety, but Jehoshaphat's vessels never
reached the land of gold. Providence prospers one, and frustrates the
desires of another, in the same business and at the same spot, yet the
Great Ruler is as good and wise at one time as another. May we have
grace to-day, in the remembrance of this text, to bless the Lord for
ships broken at Ezion-geber, as well as for vessels freighted with
temporal blessings; let us not envy the more successful, nor murmur at
our losses as though we were singularly and specially tried. Like
Jehoshaphat, we may be precious in the Lord's sight, although our
schemes end in disappointment.

The secret cause of Jehoshaphat's loss is well worthy of notice, for it
is the root of very much of the suffering of the Lord's people; it was
his alliance with a sinful family, his fellowship with sinners. In 2
Ch. 20:37, we are told that the Lord sent a prophet to declare,
"Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the Lord hath broken
thy works." This was a fatherly chastisement, which appears to have
been blest to him; for in the verse which succeeds our morning's text
we find him refusing to allow his servants to sail in the same vessels
with those of the wicked king. Would to God that Jehoshaphat's
experience might be a warning to the rest of the Lord's people, to
avoid being unequally yoked together with unbelievers! A life of misery
is usually the lot of those who are united in marriage, or in any other
way of their own choosing, with the men of the world. O for such love
to Jesus that, like him, we may be holy, harmless, undefiled, and
separate from sinners; for if it be not so with us, we may expect to
hear it often said, "The Lord hath broken thy works."

EVENING:

"The iron did swim."
-- 2 Kings 6:9

The axe-head seemed hopelessly lost, and as it was borrowed, the honour
of the prophetic band was likely to be imperilled, and so the name of
their God to be compromised. Contrary to all expectation, the iron was
made to mount from the depth of the stream and to swim; for things
impossible with man are possible with God. I knew a man in Christ but a
few years ago who was called to undertake a work far exceeding his
strength. It appeared so difficult as to involve absurdity in the bare
idea of attempting it. Yet he was called thereto, and his faith rose
with the occasion; God honoured his faith, unlooked-for aid was sent,
and the iron did swim. Another of the Lord's family was in grievous
financial straits, he was able to meet all claims, and much more if he
could have realized a certain portion of his estate, but he was
overtaken with a sudden pressure; he sought for friends in vain, but
faith led him to the unfailing Helper, and lo, the trouble was averted,
his footsteps were enlarged, and the iron did swim. A third had a
sorrowful case of depravity to deal with. He had taught, reproved,
warned, invited, and interceded, but all in vain. Old Adam was too
strong for young Melancthon, the stubborn spirit would not relent. Then
came an agony of prayer, and before long a blessed answer was sent from
heaven. The hard heart was broken, the iron did swim.

Beloved reader, what is thy desperate case? What heavy matter hast thou
in hand this evening? Bring it hither. The God of the prophets lives,
and lives to help his saints. He will not suffer thee to lack any good
thing. Believe thou in the Lord of hosts! Approach him pleading the
name of Jesus, and the iron shall swim; thou too shalt see the finger
of God working marvels for his people. According to thy faith be it
unto thee, and yet again the iron shall swim.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Have You Ever Been Alone With God?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 13, 2009

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ALONE WITH GOD?

When He was alone the twelve ... asked of Him ...

Mark 4:10
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mr+4:10&sr=1

His Solitude with Us. When God gets us alone by affliction,
heartbreak, or temptation, by disappointment, sickness, or by
thwarted affection, by a broken friendship, or by a new fnendship -
when He gets us absolutely alone, and we are dumbfounded, and cannot
ask one question, then He begins to expound. Watch Jesus Christ's
training of the twelve. It was the disciples, not the crowd outside,
who were perplexed. They constantly asked Him questions, and He
constantly expounded things to them; but they only understood after
they had received the Holy Spirit (see John 14:26).

If you are going on with God, the only thing that is clear to you,
and the only thing God intends to be clear, is the way He deals with
your own soul. Your brother's sorrows and perplexities are an
absolute confusion to you. We imagine we understand where the other
person is, until God gives us a dose of the plague of our own hearts.
There are whole tracts of stubbornness and ignorance to be revealed
by the Holy Spirit in each one of us, and it can only be done when
Jesus gets us alone. Are we alone with Him now, or are we taken up
with little fussy notions, fussy comradeships in God's service, fussy
ideas about our bodies? Jesus can expound nothing until we get
through all the noisy questions of the head and are alone with Him.

Praying with Paul : "Righteousness Made Manifest"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

RIGHTEOUSNESS MADE MANIFEST

Romans 3:21-26
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+3:21-26

Dear Father, just and justifier,

Thank you that your righteousness has been manifested to us. You
made this happen apart from the law, although the law and the
prophets bear witness to it, to your righteousness through faith in
Christ Jesus for all who trust in him. How just you are in making
no distinction between people on this matter, since every person
has sinned and falls short of your glory.

Thank you for justifying us by your grace as a gift, through the
redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom you put forward as an
expiation by his blood, so we can receive it by faith.

Praise be to you, O holy God, for showing us how righteous you
really are. In your divine forbearance you have passed over former
sins, but now you have made provision for forgiveness-the
righteousness of your Son, Jesus Christ, in whom we place our
faith.

In the name of Jesus we ask all this and lay claim to the grace
which you have so generously extended. Amen.

WJD! -- This One Always Obeys -- Matthew 2:14-15

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

This One Always Obeys

So Joseph got up and left for Egypt with the baby and the
baby's mother. They left during the night. Joseph stayed in
Egypt until Herod died. This happened to make clear the full
meaning of what the Lord said through the prophet. The Lord
said, "I called my son to come out of Egypt."

-- Matthew 2:14-15 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
God moves in mysterious ways and uses common people to do his work and
accomplish his will. The connection between an Old Testament reference
and its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus depends upon Joseph's doing what
God asked him to do in the middle of the night. While we know so very
little about Joseph, one thing we do know: when God asked him to do the
unthinkable, the crazy, and the unheard of, he didn't argue or
hesitate; he obeyed. Not once, but repeatedly. I don't know about you,
but I hope that I can have the courage and faith to be that bold and
obedient!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Give me courage and faith, O LORD, to trust and obey as Joseph did.
Humble me gently, dear Father, until my pride gives way to one truth:
"No matter what God asks, this one always obeys." Father, I make this
request in the name of Jesus, who lived and died to be obedient to your
will and save me from my sins. Amen.
