Today's Verse : James 1:12

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 12, 2008

VERSE:
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he
has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has
promised to those who love him.
-- James 1:12

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=James+1:12

THOUGHT:
This beatitude comes from Jesus' brother. He had experienced it
and not just taught it! James knew it was worth "hanging in" and
"hanging on" when his faith was under attack. He affirmed that God
loves us and that he has had made incredible promises about what
lies ahead for us. He knew that eventually our period of testing
would be transformed into a time of great blessing. James wants us
to know that God longs to bless us with life! After all, that's why
he sent Jesus. (cf. John 10:10)

PRAYER:
Dear LORD and Father, thank you for all those times that you
strengthened me when I was under attack and sustained me when I was
weary and ready to quit. Write "perseverance" deep within my soul
and give me a spirit of tenacity so that I might serve you no
matter what the outward circumstances of my life may be. In the
mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Doubt 5

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Doubt 5
Part 5 of 5 : Peter's Story of Walking on Water By: Ron Edmondson
Then, as the LORD our God commanded us, we set out from Horeb and went toward the hill country of the Amorites through all that vast and dreadful desert that you have seen, and so we reached Kadesh Barnea. Deuteronomy 1:19 NIV

Have you ever wondered why God chose the path He has for you?

Maybe your life has seen only smooth sailing. You have not had to fight the storms of life which many of us do. You have been blessed with a life without pain and strife. You have no sorrows to report. Does that describe you?

Or, like me, have you had days of real struggle? Have there been times in your life when the valley was so full of troubles, you couldn't look up to see the mountains? Have you suffered from a broken heart and sometimes failed to understand why life has to be so difficult? Has doubt occupied your heart more than faith some days?

Do you ever wonder why? Do you feel like asking God why?

A pastor friend of mine once made a statement that has always stuck with me. He said that "God does not give everyone the priviledge of suffering". Wow! What a statement! What a reflection on our God of love!

In today's verse, Moses is recounting to the people how God led them through the most dreadful land. On the other side, they found the Promise Land, but getting there was tough! If you are a follower of God you need to know that God may send you through some trials in life. He may allow you to suffer. He does this so that men will call on Him, and be strengthened by His grace and mercy. He wants us to learn to trust Him, in all circumstances, but especially when life is tough.

Are you going through a trial? Are you struggling in your faith? Use this time to call upon the Lord. Use it to trust Him more. Use it as a time where He can mold and make you into who He wants you to be.

On the other side is the Promise Land! Hold on tight! You will get there!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Beyond Parental Neglect, by Paul Faulkner

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you
today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk
about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road,
when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your
hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes
of your houses and on your gates (Deuteronomy 6:5-9 TNIV).

Let's go back to stage one!

Consider for a moment this five stage pattern in the life of a violent
criminal:

1. His parents neglect and abandon the child in early home life.

2. As early as age five or six he hits his mother. He's difficult for
school officials to handle.

3. He joins a delinquent band by age fifteen and he's involved in
criminal behavior. Many of his peers are on drugs.

4. He commits a violent crime with a gang and purchases a gun.

5. His sixteen year old girlfriend is pregnant. A new child is born,
and our nation is in deeper trouble.

Let's go back to stage one -- parental neglect. Marriage is vital, and
parents must love and nurture their kids in a spiritual as well as
physical way. Kids can't teach kids! They need adults who care!

---------

Morning & Evening -- Luke 8:13 and Luke 22:32

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday, January 11, 2008

MORNING:

"These have no root."
-- Luke 8:13

My soul, examine thyself this morning by the light of this text. Thou
hast received the word with joy; thy feelings have been stirred and a
lively impression has been made; but, remember, that to receive the
word in the ear is one thing, and to receive Jesus into thy very soul
is quite another; superficial feeling is often joined to inward
hardness of heart, and a lively impression of the word is not always a
lasting one. In the parable, the seed in one case fell upon ground
having a rocky bottom, covered over with a thin layer of earth; when
the seed began to take root, its downward growth was hindered by the
hard stone and therefore it spent its strength in pushing its green
shoot aloft as high as it could, but having no inward moisture derived
from root nourishment, it withered away. Is this my case? Have I been
making a fair show in the flesh without having a corresponding inner
life? Good growth takes place upwards and downwards at the same time.
Am I rooted in sincere fidelity and love to Jesus? If my heart remains
unsoftened and unfertilized by grace, the good seed may germinate for a
season, but it must ultimately wither, for it cannot flourish on a
rocky, unbroken, unsanctified heart. Let me dread a godliness as rapid
in growth and as wanting in endurance as Jonah's gourd; let me count
the cost of being a follower of Jesus, above all let me feel the energy
of his Holy Spirit, and then I shall possess an abiding and enduring
seed in my soul. If my mind remains as obdurate as it was by nature,
the sun of trial will scorch, and my hard heart will help to cast the
heat the more terribly upon the ill-covered seed, and my religion will
soon die, and my despair will be terrible; therefore, O heavenly Sower,
plough me first, and then cast the truth into me, and let me yield thee
a bounteous harvest.

EVENING:

"I have prayed for thee."
-- Luke 22:32

How encouraging is the thought of the Redeemer's never- ceasing
intercession for us. When we pray, he pleads for us; and when we are
not praying, he is advocating our cause, and by his supplications
shielding us from unseen dangers. Notice the word of comfort addressed
to Peter-"Simon, Simon, Satan hath desired to have you that he may sift
you as wheat; but"-what? "But go and pray for yourself." That would be
good advice, but it is not so written. Neither does he say, "But I will
keep you watchful, and so you shall be preserved." That were a great
blessing. No, it is, "But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail
not." We little know what we owe to our Saviour's prayers. When we
reach the hill-tops of heaven, and look back upon all the way whereby
the Lord our God hath led us, how we shall praise him who, before the
eternal throne, undid the mischief which Satan was doing upon earth.
How shall we thank him because he never held his peace, but day and
night pointed to the wounds upon his hands, and carried our names upon
his breastplate! Even before Satan had begun to tempt, Jesus had
forestalled him and entered a plea in heaven. Mercy outruns malice.
Mark, he does not say, "Satan hath desired to have you." He checks
Satan even in his very desire, and nips it in the bud. He does not say,
"But I have desired to pray for you." No, but "I have prayed for you: I
have done it already; I have gone to court and entered a counterplea
even before an accusation is made." O Jesus, what a comfort it is that
thou hast pleaded our cause against our unseen enemies; countermined
their mines, and unmasked their ambushes. Here is a matter for joy,
gratitude, hope, and confidence.

My Utmost For His Highest : "What My Obedience To God Costs Other People"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 11, 2008

WHAT MY OBEDIENCE TO GOD COSTS OTHER PEOPLE

They laid hold upon one Simon ... and on him they laid
the cross.

Luke 23:2

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+23:2&sr=1

If we obey God it is going to cost other people more than it costs
us, and that is where the sting comes in. If we are in love with our
Lord, obedience does not cost us anything, it is a delight, but it
costs those who do not love Him a good deal. If we obey God it will
mean that other people's plans are upset, and they will gibe us with
it - "You call this Christianity?" We can prevent the suffering; but
if we are going to obey God, we must not prevent it, we must let the
cost be paid.

Our human pride entrenches itself on this point, and we say - I will
never accept anything from anyone. We shall have to, or disobey God.
We have no right to expect to be in any other relation than our Lord
Himself was in (see Luke 8:2-3).

Stagnation in spiritual life comes when we say we will bear the whole
thing ourselves. We cannot. We are so involved in the universal
purposes of God that immediately we obey God, others are affected.
Are we going to remain loyal in our obedience to God and go through
the humiliation of refusing to be independent, or are we going to
take the other line and say - I will not cost other people suffering?
We can disobey God if we choose, and it will bring immediate relief
to the situation, but we shall be a grief to our Lord. Whereas if we
obey God, He will look after those who have been pressed into the
consequences of our obedience. We have simply to obey and to leave
all consequences with Him.

Beware of the inclination to dictate to God as to what you will allow
to happen if you obey Him.

CHRIST, THE ALL-SUFFICIENT SACRIFICE

Romans 2:12-24

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+2:12-24

Dear Father, holy God,

Write the requirements of your will upon my heart. May I live in
such a way that my conscience will bear witness that I have striven
to live for you, on that day when you judge the secrets of men's
heart by Christ Jesus.

Help me to be sincere and to have integrity. If I teach others,
let me first teach myself. If I teach against stealing, don't let
me take what is not mine.

If I teach against adultery, don't let me lust. If I teach
abhorrence of idols, keep me from covetousness, which is idolatry.

May I never cause your name to be blasphemed because someone looks
at me and sees that my life belies my commitment to you.

In the name of Jesus, the all-sufficient sacrifice for sin and my
holy intercessor, I pray. Amen.

Care Under Fire

Jesus was in the desert 40 days. He was there with the wild
animals. While Jesus was in the desert, he was tempted by
Satan {(the devil).} Then angels came and helped Jesus.

-- Mark 1:13 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
When you feel alone, abandoned, and under attack, where do you turn for
help? Jesus trusted in his relationship with his Father. He was being
led by the Spirit. However, this passage reminds us of a truth we often
forget: God does send his angels to help his faithful servants in times
of trial. Jesus faced Satan in the wilderness and among the wild
animals, but he was not alone. Angels attended to him. Do you believe
God will bless you with the same support?

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Father, I thank you that as your child, I will never have to face my
times of temptation and trial alone. I thank you for your Holy Spirit
that lives in me. Although I may not see them, I thank you for the
angels I trust are sent to assist me. Most of all, dear God, I rely
upon your promise to never abandon me. Please give me the faith to
believe that I am never alone or abandoned as your child. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.
