Mustard Seed Thoughts: Cross Roads

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Cross Roads
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, `You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" Genesis 3:1 NIV

As we lead into Easter Sunday, we will look at the road to the cross. How did we get there? Why did Jesus have to die on the cross anyway? What difference does that event, over 2000 years ago, make in my life today? Those are the types of questions we will attempt to answer. Please pray about how God would use these messages to speak to us over the next few days.

In the beginning, God created a perfect world. Adam and Eve were able to live in peace and harmony with God. There was, at that time, no heartache, no pain, no destruction. Creation performed as it was intended to, without decay. There was really only one rule for Adam and Eve to follow: DON'T TOUCH THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE. Doesn't seem that hard, does it?

Like a "WET PAINT" sign, Adam and Eve couldn't res ist the tree. Satan's temptation was more than they could bear. The offer seemed good to them at the time. (I'm sure they regretted the decision later.) Why did God allow them the freedom to reject God? To give you an honest answer, I don't know. I understand the feeling, however, of wanting someone to love you just because they choose to, not because they were forced into it. God wants us to love Him because He is God and worthy of our love. Period.

When Adam and Eve bit the fruit from this tree, the fellowship with God was broken. God, who is perfectly Holy, could no longer accept them into His presence. Their sin doomed God's perfect creation to damnation. When we were born, we were born into the sin of Adam and Eve. We are sinners because we were born in a fallen world. Every person born since Adam has inherited Adam and Eve's sinful nature.

The road to the Cross began when Adam and Eve, by their own choice, stepped out of God's perfect plan and into the worl d of self pleasure and sin.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

It Is Not News, by Steve Ridgell

Does faith heal? A major American news magazine just devoted a recent
issue to this question. There was a balanced presentation of all sides
of the question. It is clear that to some degree a person of faith
heals quicker, lives longer, and lives healthier. Some are convinced
that the data is being misinterpreted, that there must be other factors
at work that have not been identified. Others assume that the benefits
of faith are psychological: that is, if you believe strongly enough in
something, you may feel better because you are convinced in your mind
that you will.

However, it is evident that faith plays some role in health and
healing. I am not surprised by these findings. I am a Christian. I know
God heals. But I am not a Christian because it makes me healthier. Or
wealthier. Or wiser. I am a Christian because I believe that there is a
God who loves me and who sent a Son to this earth so I could live
forever. My faith is not about how I can use it to make my life better.
It is about believing in what God has already done for me.

Yes, God does take care of us on this earth. He said:

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to
pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And
the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the
Lord will raise him up (James 5:14-15).

Science is just now beginning to affirm something we Christians have
known for a long time. God acts on behalf of his people. I am never
surprised when science "discovers" that what God said in the Bible is
true. My faith does not depend on what scientists decide. I am
convinced that God is who he says he is.

As a Christian, I know that God is the One who heals. When I am sick, I
ask Him for healing. If he grants health, I acknowledge Him. If not, it
is His decision and I still acknowledge Him as God. My faith is what
allows me to trust God with my health. And I trust Him with my health
just like with everything else in my life.

God still heals the sick, just like He promised.

If you would like to explore this idea of faith more, check out
www.hopeforlife.org. Or write me at steve@hopeforlife.org.

Morning & Evening -- Luke 23:31 and Psalms 23:4

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

MORNING:

"If they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done
in the dry?"
-- Luke 23:31

Among other interpretations of this suggestive question, the following
is full of teaching: "If the innocent substitute for sinners, suffer
thus, what will be done when the sinner himself -the dry tree-shall
fall into the hands of an angry God?" When God saw Jesus in the
sinner's place, he did not spare him; and when he finds the
unregenerate without Christ, he will not spare them. O sinner, Jesus
was led away by his enemies: so shall you be dragged away by fiends to
the place appointed for you. Jesus was deserted of God; and if he, who
was only imputedly a sinner, was deserted, how much more shall you be?
"Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" what an awful shriek! But what shall be
your cry when you shall say, "O God! O God! why hast thou forsaken me?"
and the answer shall come back, "Because ye have set at nought all my
counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your
calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh." If God spared not his own
Son, how much less will he spare you! What whips of burning wire will
be yours when conscience shall smite you with all its terrors. Ye
richest, ye merriest, ye most self-righteous sinners-who would stand in
your place when God shall say, "Awake, O sword, against the man that
rejected me; smite him, and let him feel the smart for ever?" Jesus was
spit upon: sinner, what shame will be yours! We cannot sum up in one
word all the mass of sorrows which met upon the head of Jesus who died
for us, therefore it is impossible for us to tell you what streams,
what oceans of grief must roll over your spirit if you die as you now
are. You may die so, you may die now. By the agonies of Christ, by his
wounds and by his blood, do not bring upon yourselves the wrath to
come! Trust in the Son of God, and you shall never die.

EVENING:

"I will fear no evil: for thou art with me."
-- Psalms 23:4

Behold, how independent of outward circumstances the Holy Ghost can
make the Christian! What a bright light may shine within us when it is
all dark without! How firm, how happy, how calm, how peaceful we may
be, when the world shakes to and fro, and the pillars of the earth are
removed! Even death itself, with all its terrible influences, has no
power to suspend the music of a Christian's heart, but rather makes
that music become more sweet, more clear, more heavenly, till the last
kind act which death can do is to let the earthly strain melt into the
heavenly chorus, the temporal joy into the eternal bliss! Let us have
confidence, then, in the blessed Spirit's power to comfort us. Dear
reader, are you looking forward to poverty? Fear not; the divine Spirit
can give you, in your want, a greater plenty than the rich have in
their abundance. You know not what joys may be stored up for you in the
cottage around which grace will plant the roses of content. Are you
conscious of a growing failure of your bodily powers? Do you expect to
suffer long nights of languishing and days of pain? O be not sad! That
bed may become a throne to you. You little know how every pang that
shoots through your body may be a refining fire to consume your dross-a
beam of glory to light up the secret parts of your soul. Are the eyes
growing dim? Jesus will be your light. Do the ears fail you? Jesus'
name will be your soul's best music, and his person your dear delight.
Socrates used to say, "Philosophers can be happy without music;" and
Christians can be happier than philosophers when all outward causes of
rejoicing are withdrawn. In thee, my God, my heart shall triumph, come
what may of ills without! By thy power, O blessed Spirit, my heart
shall be exceeding glad, though all things should fail me here below.

My Utmost For His Highest : "His Resurrection Destiny"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 8, 2009

HIS RESURRECTION DESTINY

Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to
enter into His glory?

Luke 24:2
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+24:2&sr=1

Our Lord's Cross is the gateway into His life: His Resurrection means
that He has power now to convey His life to me. When I am born again
from above, I receive from the Risen Lord His very life.

Our Lord's Resurrection destiny is to bring "many sons unto glory."
The fulfilling of His destiny gives Him the right to make us sons and
daughters of God. We are never in the relationship to God that the
Son of God is in; but we are brought by the Son into the relation of
sonship. When Our Lord rose from the dead, He rose to an absolutely
new life, to a life He did not live before He was incarnate. He rose
to a life that had never been before; and His resurrection means for
us that we are raised to His risen life, not to our old life. One day
we shall have a body like unto His glorious body, but we can know now
the efficacy of His resurrection and walk in newness of life. "I
would know Him in the power of His resurrection."

"As Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, that He should give
eternal life to as many as Thou hast given Him." "Holy Spirit" is the
experimental name for Eternal Life working in human beings here and
now. The Holy Spirit is the Deity in proceeding power Who applies the
Atonement to our experience. Thank God it is gloriously and
majestically true that the Holy Ghost can work in us the very nature
of Jesus if we will obey Him.

Praying with Paul : "Contentment"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

CONTENTMENT

1 Corinthians 7:25-35
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+7:25-35

Dear Father, head of our one enduring spiritual family,

Thank you that you have not left us uninformed in matters of
family relations. Thank you for the apostle Paul's instructions,
which tell us to be holy in body and spirit and to give ourselves
up to please you. Help me, Father, to do that.

May we be content in the situations in which you have placed us.
May those of us with spouses live, in a sense, as if we had none.
May those of us who mourn over lost loved ones, in a sense, not
mourn at all. May those of us who rejoice, in a sense, not be so
joyful. May those of us who buy and sell, in a sense, act as if we
have no goods. May those of us who deal with the world, in a sense,
act as if we have no dealings with the world at all.

What does it all mean? This world and the form of it are passing
away, so free me from all anxiety! There is no answer apart from
knowing that you are in control and will bring to pass your good
pleasure.

Grant us rest in you! In the name of Jesus I lift up this prayer
to you. Amen.

The Hard Follow

Then a teacher of the law came to Jesus and said, "Teacher, I
will follow you any place you go." Jesus said to him, "The
foxes have holes to live in. The birds have nests to live in.
But the Son of Man has no place where he can rest his head."
Another man, one of Jesus' followers, said to Jesus, "Lord,
let me go and bury my father first. {Then I will follow
you.}" But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and let the people
that are dead bury their own dead."

-- Matthew 8:19-22 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
At first glance, Jesus is unusually harsh to these two would-be
followers. Jesus, however, is making clear that anything other than our
allegiance to him must be secondary to following him. There must not be
any rival to the complete lordship of Jesus over every area of our
lives. Such a life is demanding, and as events that follow show, even
terrifying at times. There is, however, one thing that makes that life
powerful and exciting: the Lord is in the lead. He sets the agenda. He
provides the strength. He gives the protection. He works with power.
While leaving all, risking all, and giving up all sounds quite
sacrificial, it is also the doorway to finding an all-sufficient,
almighty Savior.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy Lord, I surrender my heart, my life, my possessions and my future
to you. Lead me in the path that pleases you and gives you the greatest
allegiance in my use of time, influence, money, and abilities. In
Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Today's Verse : 1 Corinthians 15:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

April 8, 2009

VERSE:
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to
you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand.
-- 1 Corinthians 15:1
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:1

THOUGHT:
Our hope, our salvation, and our foundation for faith is the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. This Gospel is the same as that Gospel
first preached by the apostles and passed on to the believers in
the early church. With so many confusing and conflicting ideas
present in the world, we need to go back and be reminded of our
simple faith in Jesus and his death, burial and resurrection. We
need to un-clutter our hearts from all the ideas and issues that so
often divide our churches and rip apart our fellowships and hear
the words of the old hymn, "Simply to Thy Cross I cling." Today,
let's be reminded of that simple Gospel of Jesus and build our life
there.

PRAYER:
Almighty and Precious Father, I love you. I cannot begin to
thank you enough for your love and grace, displayed so powerfully
to me in Jesus. I know the basis for my hope and the foundation on
which I build my life is the Gospel of your dear Son. Thank you for
giving me something so simple, steadfast, and sure. In Jesus' name
I pray. Amen.
