Today's Verse : Titus 1:15

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT --

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 15, 2008

VERSE:
To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted
and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and
consciences are corrupted.
-- Titus 1:15

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Titus+1:15

THOUGHT:
Rust stains, grass stains, blood stains, chocolate stains --
ARGH! Those stains are real nightmares in the laundry room. They
don't just leave a stain on the surface of the fabric, but they
also leave a residue that infiltrates the fibers of our clothes.
Evil is that way. We must not kid ourselves. Evil corrupts and
leaves a residue that corrupts everything it touches, including the
hearts of otherwise decent people. That's why we are urged to stay
far away from evil and avoid its very appearance. That's also why
Jesus died: to not only overcome the Evil One, but to also clean
away the stain and its residue.

PRAYER:
Father, guard my path and give me good Christian friends who
will help guard my life from evil. In addition, dear Father, please
help me as I seek to share the cleansing and liberating power of
Christ with those around me who are caught in evil's destructive
and deceptive grasp. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Rejoice

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Rejoice
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. Habakkuk 3:17-18

.......and though the bird feeder falls to the ground, yet I will whistle to my Lord, I will be joyful in God my Creator! (Okay, I added that part, but it fits.)

I have a bird paradise in my backyard. We love to watch the birds eating and playing. Many mornings I awake to the pleasant sounds of bird talk. In addition to birds, we have lots of squirrels, and that is where today's story begins.

Our squirrels like bird food, too, and they will go to any extreme to get it. Once the squirrels chewed through the rope which held up our bird feeder, and the feeder crashed to the ground. We have yet to replace it.

Guess what? The next morning, and every morning since, our b irds have still awoken me with their pleasant morning songs. They still rejoice! What's the deal? Their primary source of food is gone. How do they know where their next meal will come from? How can they be so unconcerned?

"and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" (Matt. 6:26)

Through it all today, R E J O I C E ! ! !

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Pincushion?, by Phil Ware

Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my
name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent
me. For whoever is least among you all is the greatest" (Luke 9:48
TNIV).

Nine shots in less than a month! Sore arms and a touch of fever or two.
It's been interesting. As I was pulling my sleeve down, the nurse at
the health department joked about the three Band-Aids I had on my arms
after one of my visits. "You look like a pincushion," she joked, "so
we'll see you next week?" She giggled at the little grimace on my face
and the funny she had made. "Yep!" I replied, "I'll see you next week
for that last shot!"

Why in the world would I get nine shots in such a short period of time?

Africa!

Lord willing, I will be going to Uganda with Compassion International
in February. The trip is to see the operations there and also help
folks in our Heartlight Internet family know more about sponsoring
children in the AIDS ravaged countries of Africa. Heartlight is also
sending along some small gifts for children and World Bible Translation
Center is sending some New Testaments; but the focus of the trip is to
open our readers' hearts to the idea of sponsoring a child.

Donna and I have sponsored a little boy for quite some time, but the
very same day we had decided we wanted to sponsor a little girl, we
received an email from Compassion International asking if I would be
interested in going to Uganda. I would get to meet the little girl we
will be sponsoring and get to encourage lots of other folks to join us
in sponsoring a child. What an incredible blessing! What a Kingdom
opportunity!

I can't think of anything more crucial in our time than helping
children to know the love of Jesus and give them a chance to grow up to
serve him. Yet in so many countries, poverty and disease prevent
children from having much of a opportunity to do any of these. In the
squalor of poverty, we can help them experience the love of Jesus and
perhaps prevent them from being recruited or kidnapped into a life of
hatred, violence, and self-destruction.

So, off to Africa! And you are a part of the trip.

I was invited because of our interest in Compassion International and
because of you -- the tens of thousands of people in our Heartlight
community. Many of you have already committed to sponsor a child each
month. I hope many others will consider the possibility of doing so in
the future. We are hoping to find sponsors for 500 children as a result
of this trip. Many of these children live with the prospect of losing
one or both parents to AIDS before they finish their teenage years. We
can make a difference!

So, you see, I'm quite happy to get all my required shots and make a
long trip with all its adventures and risks, because nothing -- not a
thing -- is more important than helping children get an opportunity at
life and to know the love of Jesus and the family of God.

So, please, help out with the trip and the effort in any of the ways
you believe God would want you to help. Here are some things you can
do:

* Pray for us and the trip to Uganda in February: the effectiveness,
the impact on the children, and that God opens the hearts to help
us find 500 sponsors for these precious children -- during the
trip, we'll keep you updated through the daily Heartlight articles
as well as my blog.

We have an opportunity to change our world one child at time!

* Learn about Compassion International and prayerfully consider
sponsoring a child from Uganda or another African country: for just
a little more than one dollar a day, we can change the future of a
human soul

* Ask God to awaken his people: we have an opportunity to change our
world one child at time, throughout the world and home if we choose
to do so.

* Pray that God will raise up great leaders for God's Kingdom in
Africa out of these children who are helped.

Oh, and one last thing: can I borrow an arm or two in case I have to
get any more shots? This pincushion has about run out of places to put
needles!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have questions or comments about this effort or any of the
questions below, I'd love to hear from you on my blog:
http://blogs.heartlight.org/phil/?p=190

If you sponsor a child, I'd love hear about your experiences and
commitment to make a difference and why you decided to get involved?

If you will pray for our trip in February, would you please let us
know!

Morning & Evening -- Isaiah 63:1 and Matthew 14:30

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, January 14, 2008

MORNING:

"Mighty to save."
-- Isaiah 63:1

By the words "to save" we understand the whole of the great work of
salvation, from the first holy desire onward to complete
sanctification. The words are multum in parro: indeed, here is all
mercy in one word. Christ is not only "mighty to save" those who
repent, but he is able to make men repent. He will carry those to
heaven who believe; but he is, moreover, mighty to give men new hearts
and to work faith in them. He is mighty to make the man who hates
holiness love it, and to constrain the despiser of his name to bend the
knee before him. Nay, this is not all the meaning, for the divine power
is equally seen in the after-work. The life of a believer is a series
of miracles wrought by "the Mighty God." The bush burns, but is not
consumed. He is mighty to keep his people holy after he has made them
so, and to preserve them in his fear and love until he consummates
their spiritual existence in heaven. Christ's might doth not lie in
making a believer and then leaving him to shift for himself; but he who
begins the good work carries it on; he who imparts the first germ of
life in the dead soul, prolongs the divine existence, and strengthens
it until it bursts asunder every bond of sin, and the soul leaps from
earth, perfected in glory. Believer, here is encouragement. Art thou
praying for some beloved one? Oh, give not up thy prayers, for Christ
is "mighty to save." You are powerless to reclaim the rebel, but your
Lord is Almighty. Lay hold on that mighty arm, and rouse it to put
forth its strength. Does your own case trouble you? Fear not, for his
strength is sufficient for you. Whether to begin with others, or to
carry on the work in you, Jesus is "mighty to save;" the best proof of
which lies in the fact that he has saved you. What a thousand mercies
that you have not found him mighty to destroy!

EVENING:

"Beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me."
-- Matthew 14:30

Sinking times are praying times with the Lord's servants. Peter
neglected prayer at starting upon his venturous journey, but when he
began to sink his danger made him a suppliant, and his cry though late
was not too late. In our hours of bodily pain and mental anguish, we
find ourselves as naturally driven to prayer as the wreck is driven
upon the shore by the waves. The fox hies to its hole for protection;
the bird flies to the wood for shelter; and even so the tried believer
hastens to the mercy seat for safety. Heaven's great harbour of refuge
is All-prayer; thousands of weather-beaten vessels have found a haven
there, and the moment a storm comes on, it is wise for us to make for
it with all sail.

Short prayers are long enough. There were but three words in the
petition which Peter gasped out, but they were sufficient for his
purpose. Not length but strength is desirable. A sense of need is a
mighty teacher of brevity. If our prayers had less of the tail feathers
of pride and more wing they would be all the better. Verbiage is to
devotion as chaff to the wheat. Precious things lie in small compass,
and all that is real prayer in many a long address might have been
uttered in a petition as short as that of Peter.

Our extremities are the Lord's opportunities. Immediately a keen sense
of danger forces an anxious cry from us the ear of Jesus hears, and
with him ear and heart go together, and the hand does not long linger.
At the last moment we appeal to our Master, but his swift hand makes up
for our delays by instant and effectual action. Are we nearly engulfed
by the boisterous waters of affliction? Let us then lift up our souls
unto our Saviour, and we may rest assured that he will not suffer us to
perish. When we can do nothing Jesus can do all things; let us enlist
his powerful aid upon our side, and all will be well.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Called Of God"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 14, 2008

CALLED OF GOD

Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I,
Here am I; send me.

Isaiah 6:8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=isa+6:8&sr=1

God did not address the call to Isaiah; Isaiah overheard God saying,
"Who will go for us?" The call of God is not for the special few, it
is for everyone. Whether or not I hear God's call depends upon the
state of my ears; and what I hear depends upon my disposition. "Many
are called but few are chosen," that is, few prove themselves the
chosen ones. The chosen ones are those who have come into a
relationship with God through Jesus Christ whereby their disposition
has been altered and their ears unstopped, and they hear the still
small voice questioning all the time, "Who will go for us?" It is not
a question of God singling out a man and saying, "Now, you go." God
did not lay a strong compulsion on Isaiah; Isaiah was in the presence
of God and he overheard the call, and realized that there was nothing
else for him but to say, in conscious freedom, "Here am I, send me."
Get out of your mind the idea of expecting God to come with
compulsions and pleadings. When our Lord called His disciples there
was no irresistible compulsion from outside. The quiet passionate
insistence of His "Follow Me" was spoken to men with every power wide
awake. If we let the Spirit of God bring us face to face with God, we
too shall hear something akin to what Isaiah heard, the still small

Praying with Paul : "Justification by Faith"

JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH

Romans 3:27-31

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+3:27-31

Dear Father, just and justifier,

All praise is due you, Father. Our boasting is totally excluded.
Our justification is not by our works, but through our faith in
you. So we are convinced by Paul that a person is justified by
faith and not by works of the law.

You are God not only of the Jews but of all other nations also.
You are the one God, the only God, the God of all people
everywhere.

On the basis of whether people put their trust in you instead of
themselves you justify people from every nation and race. What a
wonderful God! Thank you for putting faith in my heart and
accepting me.

In the name of Jesus we ask all this and lay claim to the grace
which you have so generously extended. Amen.

Left Behind

Jesus continued walking by Lake Galilee. He saw two more
brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in
their boat, preparing their nets to catch fish. Their father
Zebedee and the men that worked for him were in the boat with
the brothers. When Jesus saw the brothers he told them to
come. They left their father and followed Jesus.

-- Mark 1:19-20 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
There is a cost to following Jesus. Some people won't understand. Some
of those who won't understand may even be in our own families. However,
we are called to follow, knowing that others we love might not be
willing to face the cost of that discipleship. Don't be fooled, dear
friend, by preachers promising everything while implying there will not
be heartbreak or hardship. Some we love will not follow with us.
However, our hope and prayer is that their reluctance will only be
temporary and that through us they will come to know the Jesus we
follow. The first step, however, is to follow ... no matter the cost!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Give me courage, dear Father, to follow Jesus as my Lord no matter the
cost. Please use me to influence those I love to come to know Jesus as
their Lord. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
