Today's Verse : Romans 5:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 21, 2009

VERSE:
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for us.

-- Romans 5:8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+5:8

THOUGHT:
Interestingly, the Bible doesn't ever just say that God loves
us. Instead, it says: "God demonstrated his love..." "In this is
love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and gave..." "For
God so loved the world that he gave..." Love is more than emotion
or intention. True love, redemptive love, God-styled love is
active; it does something. For us, Jesus did more than something;
he sacrificed everything. What's more, he did it when we most
needed it. He demonstrated his love when we were sinners!

PRAYER:
Father, thank you for loving me. I love you. I love you for what
you've done. I love you for who you are. I love you for your
promises. I love you for your faithfulness. Most of all, dear
Father, I love you because of Jesus who showed me just how much you
love me. Please empower me to show my love by serving and giving to
others as Jesus did. In his name I pray. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: Forgiveness Available Today!

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
Forgiveness Available Today!
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
But then I will win her back once again. I will lead her out into the desert and speak tenderly to her there. Hosea 2:14 NLT

God is waiting for you to come home, dear prodigal one.

I know that most of you have never done anything the world would consider really bad, right? (Of course, that question is getting a little easier to answer each year with the constant reduction in personal morals.) But, most of you are just really good people. You don't have anything to be ashamed of, right?

Oh, but then there are some of us. We're the reason God offers forgiveness. We have strayed so far so many times. There have been days when God was the last thing on our mind. Other times we claimed to know Him, but we lived contradictory lives. We have messed up! We are actually ashamed of our past. We sometimes feel God can't forgive us or won't forgive us for all we have done. Why would God want to, anyway?

Dear Christian friend, please k now that God wants to lead you home. He is earnestly expecting your return. Jesus, seated at the right hand of the Father, is interceding on your behalf. You are His child and He cannot turn His back on you. He is anxious for you to know Him again.

God will actually lead you into His presence. He wants the opportunity to be in fellowship with you daily. He wants intimacy with you. He has provided you with His grace as a welcoming measure. His door is wide open. The invitation is crystal clear. Come Home!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

That's Good News!, by Ron Rose

Jim pulled me down close and in a desperate, worried voice he
whispered, "Is God going to zap me? I'm not sure I'm good enough."

We talked a long time about God and love and grace and forgiveness. It
was our last conversation; 48 hours later Jim punched his transfer from
this life to the next.

But, the conversation has lingered in my mind. Since that day I've had
numerous discussions about what God is like and if any body is good
enough. One friend put it this way, "It seems to me that God just sits
up there in heaven and punishes the people who are already having a
tough time on this earth." Another told me, "I think God is power and
he uses his power to dominate others. Just look at the Old Testament.
He was always angry at somebody, usually his own people." A stranger at
Starbucks added, "And, how about those Ten Commandments ... they're
impossible requirements, no wonder he never blesses anyone. No one is
good enough." "So, where is the good news?"

In the verses before the Ten Commandments, before God gives any
commandments, he introduces himself as the God who loves Israel. He
wants the best for them. God didn't sit in heaven making a list of all
the things he knows human beings like to do and then outlawing them.
But, he knows us really well. He made us. His desire was to bless us
and to call us to reflect his character and compassion. This is where
the Ten Commandments come from.

My response to the stranger at Starbucks? "I think God is saying I am
the God who loves you. I'm on your side. I got you out of slavery. I'm
the best deal you've got going. Trust me. Don't steal. Don't lie. Don't
abandon me. Don't commit adultery, because if you do, it will unleash
destructive power that will slowly overshadow you, destroying you, your
families and your society. Trust me. Don't be stupid."

Truth is, from the beginning God has known that we have to see love, to
know what it's like ... so he sent Jesus to live here and show us how
to love and forgive.

Remember that famous verse?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever
believes in him should not perish but have eternal life [beginning
right now]. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn
the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him (John
3:16-17 ESV, comment added by author).

That's Good News!

"You are the light of the world."

We are followers of Jesus and Jesus invested in people ... all kinds of
ordinary people. They followed him day and night. They gathered on the
hillside to listen and marvel -- the oppressed, the sick, the outcast,
the losers, the lonely and the powerless. They had been denied dignity,
value, and hope. He looked into the eyes of friends and strangers alike
and announced, "The kingdom of God belongs to YOU!"

They were blessed, not because of their condition, but in spite of it.
The discounted and excluded were shocked and stunned. "What did he
say?" "Did you hear that?"

Rather than telling them how they'd failed, he declared: "You are the
salt of the earth." "But Jesus, we've been told we are the scum of the
earth." "You are the light of the world."

That's the God I follow. This is the God of love and grace and
forgiveness. And Jesus, he came to show us how to live ... right here,
right now, not just someday in heaven because God loves us now and
wants to bless us and show us how to love and forgive.

That's Good News!

Morning & Evening -- Genesis 4:2 and Psalms 119:37

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

MORNING:

"Abel was a keeper of sheep."
-- Genesis 4:2

As a shepherd Abel sanctified his work to the glory of God, and offered
a sacrifice of blood upon his altar, and the Lord had respect unto Abel
and his offering. This early type of our Lord is exceedingly clear and
distinct. Like the first streak of light which tinges the east at
sunrise, it does not reveal everything, but it clearly manifests the
great fact that the sun is coming. As we see Abel, a shepherd and yet a
priest, offering a sacrifice of sweet smell unto God, we discern our
Lord, who brings before his Father a sacrifice to which Jehovah ever
hath respect. Abel was hated by his brother-hated without a cause; and
even so was the Saviour: the natural and carnal man hated the accepted
man in whom the Spirit of grace was found, and rested not until his
blood had been shed. Abel fell, and sprinkled his altar and sacrifice
with his own blood, and therein sets forth the Lord Jesus slain by the
enmity of man while serving as a priest before the Lord. "The good
Shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep." Let us weep over him as
we view him slain by the hatred of mankind, staining the horns of his
altar with his own blood. Abel's blood speaketh. "The Lord said unto
Cain, 'The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the
ground.'" The blood of Jesus hath a mighty tongue, and the import of
its prevailing cry is not vengeance but mercy. It is precious beyond
all preciousness to stand at the altar of our good Shepherd! to see him
bleeding there as the slaughtered priest, and then to hear his blood
speaking peace to all his flock, peace in our conscience, peace between
Jew and Gentile, peace between man and his offended Maker, peace all
down the ages of eternity for blood-washed men. Abel is the first
shepherd in order of time, but our hearts shall ever place Jesus first
in order of excellence. Thou great Keeper of the sheep, we the people
of thy pasture bless thee with our whole hearts when we see thee slain
for us.

EVENING:

"Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou
me in thy way."
-- Psalms 119:37

There are divers kinds of vanity. The cap and bells of the fool, the
mirth of the world, the dance, the lyre, and the cup of the dissolute,
all these men know to be vanities; they wear upon their forefront their
proper name and title. Far more treacherous are those equally vain
things, the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches. A man
may follow vanity as truly in the counting-house as in the theatre. If
he be spending his life in amassing wealth, he passes his days in a
vain show. Unless we follow Christ, and make our God the great object
of life, we only differ in appearance from the most frivolous. It is
clear that there is much need of the first prayer of our text. "Quicken
thou me in thy way." The Psalmist confesses that he is dull, heavy,
lumpy, all but dead. Perhaps, dear reader, you feel the same. We are so
sluggish that the best motives cannot quicken us, apart from the Lord
himself. What! will not hell quicken me? Shall I think of sinners
perishing, and yet not be awakened? Will not heaven quicken me? Can I
think of the reward that awaiteth the righteous, and yet be cold? Will
not death quicken me? Can I think of dying, and standing before my God,
and yet be slothful in my Master's service? Will not Christ's love
constrain me? Can I think of his dear wounds, can I sit at the foot of
his cross, and not be stirred with fervency and zeal? It seems so! No
mere consideration can quicken us to zeal, but God himself must do it,
hence the cry, "Quicken thou me." The Psalmist breathes out his whole
soul in vehement pleadings: his body and his soul unite in prayer.
"Turn away mine eyes," says the body: "Quicken thou me," cries the
soul. This is a fit prayer for every day. O Lord, hear it in my case
this night.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Are You Fresh For Everything?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 20, 2009

ARE YOU FRESH FOR EVERYTHING?

Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of
God.

John 3:3
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+3:3&sr=1

Sometimes we are fresh for a prayer meeting but not fresh for
cleaning boots!

Being born again of the Spirit is an unmistakable work of God, as
mysterious as the wind, as surprising as God Himself. We do not know
where it begins, it is hidden away in the depths of our personal
life. Being born again from above is a perennial, perpetual and
eternal beginning; a freshness all the time in thinking and in
talking and in living, the continual surprise of the life of God.
Staleness is an indication of something out of joint with God - "I
must do this thing or it will never be done." That is the first sign
of staleness. Are we freshly born this minute or are we stale, raking
in our minds for something to do? Freshness does not come from
obedience but from the Holy Spirit; obedience keeps us in the light
as God is in the light.

Guard jealously your relationship to God. Jesus prayed "that they may
be one, even as we are one" - nothing between. Keep all the life
perennially open to Jesus Christ, don't pretend with Him. Are you
drawing your life from any other source than God Himself? If you are
depending upon anything but Him, you will never know when He is gone.

Being born of the Spirit means much more than we generally take it to
mean. It gives us a new vision and keeps us absolutely fresh for
everything by the perennial supply of the life of God.

Praying with Paul : "God's Grace"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / PRAYING WITH PAUL from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

GOD'S GRACE

Romans 5:1-5
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+5:1-5

Dear Father, giver of your Holy Spirit,

Thank you for justifying me through faith, so that now I have
peace with you through the Lord Jesus Christ.

How grateful I am that I have access to your grace! I rejoice in
the hope of sharing in your glory.

More than that, my God, I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake.
I know that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces
character, and character produces hope.

How I bless you for this wonderful hope that I have. It is a hope
that will never bring disappointment.

I know this because I have tasted your love. You have poured it
into my heart through the Holy Spirit which you have given me, as
well as to all your people.

By the authority of Christ and in his name I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- Snakes -- Matthew 3:7-10

Snakes

Many Pharisees and Sadducees came to the place where John was
baptizing people. When John saw them he said to them: "You
are all snakes! Who warned you to run away from God's anger
that is coming? You must do the things that show that you
have really changed your hearts and lives. And don't think
that you can boast and say to yourselves, 'Abraham is our
father.' I tell you that God could make children for Abraham
from these rocks here. The ax is now ready to cut down the
trees. Every tree that does not make good fruit will be cut
down and thrown into the fire.

-- Matthew 3:7-10 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
So much of religion can be little more than posturing, passionate
opinions, and religious pomp without much true substance. God, however,
demands lives that are consistent with the words of our mouths. Wearing
robes, having titles, coming from a strong religious heritage, and
liking to be recognized as religious, in and of themselves, simply
don't count with Jesus. He wants to see the fruit of lives dedicated to
him as God. In fact, Jesus uses terms of utmost derision for those
claiming to be religious but not living righteously. He reserves the
greatest punishment for those who take advantage of their religious
positions. What counts with our Lord are lives that are true to God,
not ones that merely look and sound religious.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Faithful and just God, thank you for being consistent and true. At
times, dear Father, I find myself struggling to have the purest of
motives and sincerest of commitments. Please forgive me when my faith
is more about religious showy rituals and not about a changed daily
lifestyle. Help me to be more true to what I say I believe, and not get
caught up in religious pretensions. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
