Mustard Seed Thoughts: The Storm Growth, Part 4

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
The Storm Growth, Part 4
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. Mark 4:36 NIV

Jesus was teaching the disciples a valuable lesson about Himself, and thats the overall theme of the story in this series. We tend to focus on the disciples and Jesus, because they are the central characters in the story, but dont overlook the supporting cast. The Scripture says there were other boats with them as well. Jesus had left the crowds to concentrate on the disciples, but some people just couldnt get enough of Jesus (I like people like that) and so they followed in other boats.

Think about this for a moment. When the storm came, the other boats were affected too. The same time the disciples were afraid, these other people were afraid too. When all hope seemed to be gone for the disciples (it wasnt, but it must have seemed that way), it appeared hopeless for the other boat riders too! Better yet, when the storm was calmed, it was calmed for the other boats too! They received equal miracle that day from Jesus!

What can we learn from this illustration?

When one person struggles in their faith, that struggle affects others too! When one person is dying of cancer, it affects many other people. When one person is lost; separated from God, it drags others into sin too!

At the same time, when Jesus comes into one life it doesnt simply change one life. It impacts others, too! I heard of a tribe in Uganda that simply would not accept the gospel. The missionaries did all they knew to do, but there was so much rejection from the people. Finally one missionary discovered that the chief of the tribe was telling the people not to accept the Gospel. The missionaries changed their strategy and began to witness to the chief. He received Christ and, by his example, the whole tribe was saved.

I have shared this statistic I heard (source unsure) many times. If you reach a child for Christ, you have a 20% chance of reaching the entire family for Christ. If you reach a mother you have a 40% chance of reaching the entire family. If you reach a father, you have a 90% chance of reaching the entire family for Christ! Wow! We need to be reaching some dads for Christ! (and some children...and some mothers...and some aunts and uncles and friends, etc.)

You may only impact one person in your life for Christ. It may be those precious children you are raising or someone with whom you work. The fact is that the results of your efforts will not be limited to just one person. God will multiply His efforts through you a thousand fold.

Reach those people in your boat of life and other boats will be reached as well!

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

What Difference Can One Make?, by Phil Ware

I'm just a nobody ... yes, that's the pigeon hole so many want to
make me fit -- just a little nobody, from nowhere, stuck in this
place that's not my home.

It doesn't feel like any of my concerns matter to anyone. My
opinion doesn't really matter. No one in high places cares about
what is important to me. To be honest, nobody in low places really
cares either.

People talk about their careers, their spouses, their homes, and
their children. I'm not even sure how I'm supposed to join the
conversation. I've lost everything that matters -- home, husband,
boys, country, and dignity. It's just too painful to even think
about those things.

I would like to believe that my life matters -- that God has a
purpose for me in His grand scheme of things -- but in the current
moment and the painful mess of my life, it's just too hard to
believe that could be true.

I've been told many times that I'm just bitter. I guess I've begun
to believe it. In fact, I've told folks to just call me
"Bitterness" -- but my real name is Naomi and all I have left in my
life is one daughter-in-law. Just Ruth. That's all I've got left
... just Ruth.

Can one person, especially one old woman who has lost everything,
really make a difference in the world? Can she really make a difference
in God's grand scheme of things?

Naomi reminds us that a faithful woman can change everything! God made
sure we could know this truth by providing a beautiful story He made
into a book in the Bible. The story is not really about Naomi, but
about her daughter-in-law. This daughter-in-law is named Ruth.

Naomi and her husband, Elimelek, were forced to leave their home and
move to a foreign land because they could not feed their family during
a severe famine in their homeland. In this foreign land, they had to
speak a foreign language and live with people who worshiped false gods.
Naomi and her husband along with their two sons, Mahlon and Kilion
worked as migrant farmers. Over time, the two sons married foreign
daughters. Then, Elimelek and his two sons died, leaving Naomi and her
daughters-in-law, widows. Kinfolks bound together by grief and loss,
but not much else.

In those times, widows, especially foreign widows, had no support.
These three women were alone, destitute, and without hope. So Naomi set
out to return home to the place she had left. She encouraged her
daughters-in-law to return to their families, and one did. But the
other, Ruth, spoke words of loyalty, faithfulness, and grace to Naomi:

But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from
you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your
people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will
die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it
ever so severely, if even death separates you and me" (Ruth 1:16-17
TNIV).

These two women, broken by life but tied to each other by love,
returned to Naomi's home. And yes, Naomi was bitterness personified.
She had lost her home, her husband, and her two boys. Her only real tie
to life was Ruth, who now found herself in a foreign land. Because God
required His people to care for the hungry, even if they were
foreigners among them, Ruth was able to take care of Naomi. It was hard
and dangerous work, but Ruth did it to provide for her mother-in-law.

Before long, Ruth's faithfulness and beauty caught the eye of godly man
named Boaz, who made sure Ruth was provided ample opportunity to
provide for Naomi and also made sure she was protected from those who
might abuse her. Ruth was surprised by such grace and tenderness:

She asked him, "Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you
notice me -- a foreigner?"

Boaz replied, "I've been told all about what you have done for your
mother-in-law since the death of your husband -- how you left your
father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people
you did not know before. May the LORD repay you for what you have
done. May you be richly rewarded by the LORD, the God of Israel,
under whose wings you have come to take refuge"

(Ruth 2:10-12).

Naomi's bitterness began to sweeten as she saw God's hand at work in
her life and in the faithfulness of Ruth. Ruth, through a bit of
romantic scheming and faithful living, was admired by Boaz and
ultimately became his wife:

"The LORD bless you, my daughter," he replied. "This kindness is
greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after
the younger men, whether rich or poor. And now, my daughter, don't
be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town
know that you are a woman of noble character (Ruth 3:10-11).

Not only did Ruth and Boaz marry, but the LORD God blessed them with a
child. The story ends with Naomi, the one who was once nicknamed
"Bitterness," being blessed by a grandchild. The story ends with these
sweet words:

Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women
living there said, "Naomi has a son!" And they named him Obed. He
was the father of Jesse, the father of David (Ruth 4:16-17).

Yes, Naomi's great-great-grandson was the great King David. Something
unimaginable when all of life was broken and she had lost everyone dear
to her, except Ruth. And many years later, because of the faithful love
of Ruth in times of her own unspeakable grief and hardship, God would
send His Messiah, whom we know as Jesus (Matthew 1:5-6).

Does one person matter?

Does one woman's decision to be faithful when it looks like God has
abandoned her really matter?

Can a poor wife of a foreign sharecropper who follows her bitter
mother-in-law back to live in a foreign land make a difference?

Go to a manger in Bethlehem and ask the shepherds and the angels; and
they will tell you, "Yes!"

Go find a bunch of stargazers from Iran who traveled across a desert
following a star looking for the King of the Jews, and they will tell
you, "Yes!"

Go ask old Ms. Bitterness herself, a powerless widow named Naomi so
broken by life and grief, and she will shout, "Yes!"

What does this life-story teach us?

Go stand before the throne of mercy and grace, have the King of Kings
wipe every tear from your eyes, and see the Lamb of God, and you, too,
will shout, "Yes!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------

LIFE Questions:
These are questions designed for you to discuss with others in a small
group, house church, friendship circle, or share with our
Heartlight.org community on the blog. I'd love to hear from you:
http://thephilfiles.com -- and on the blog, you will find a series of
free, beautiful Scripture graphics that help you tell the story of Ruth
in images.

Be sure and read the book of Ruth in preparation for the following
discussion questions!

What strikes you most powerfully about the story of Naomi and Ruth?

What are your favorite verses in this life-story?

What would a woman in Naomi's position -- a foreigner and impoverished
widow who has lost her two sons and has no family in the land -- have
to face in ancient times?

What would she face today?

God demanded that his people not harvest the corners of their land or
pick up anything they dropped when they harvested so the poor could
come and pick it up. Why would this be important for Naomi and Ruth?

Why do you believe that God made sure this life-story, and this foreign
woman who was so faithful (Ruth), was included both in a book in the
Bible and also in the lineage of King David and also of Jesus?

What does this life-story teach us about not giving up in our grief,
brokenness, despair, and bitterness?

What does this teach us about how we should feel about aliens and
foreigners in our land?

What does this teach us about being faithful to those in our family
even when they are difficult to get along with?

If you were to summarize the message of Ruth in one sentence, in terms
of what God is saying to you in this life-story, what would it be?

Morning & Evening -- Matthew 12:15 and John 5:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday, May 7, 2009

MORNING:

"Great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all."
-- Matthew 12:15

What a mass of hideous sickness must have thrust itself under the eye
of Jesus! Yet we read not that he was disgusted, but patiently waited
on every case. What a singular variety of evils must have met at his
feet! What sickening ulcers and putrefying sores! Yet he was ready for
every new shape of the monster evil, and was victor over it in every
form. Let the arrow fly from what quarter it might, he quenched its
fiery power. The heat of fever, or the cold of dropsy; the lethargy of
palsy, or the rage of madness; the filth of leprosy, or the darkness of
ophthalmia-all knew the power of his word, and fled at his command. In
every corner of the field he was triumphant over evil, and received the
homage of delivered captives. He came, he saw, he conquered everywhere.
It is even so this morning. Whatever my own case may be, the beloved
Physician can heal me; and whatever may be the state of others whom I
may remember at this moment in prayer, I may have hope in Jesus that he
will be able to heal them of their sins. My child, my friend, my
dearest one, I can have hope for each, for all, when I remember the
healing power of my Lord; and on my own account, however severe my
struggle with sins and infirmities, I may yet be of good cheer. He who
on earth walked the hospitals, still dispenses his grace, and works
wonders among the sons of men: let me go to him at once in right
earnest.

Let me praise him, this morning, as I remember how he wrought his
spiritual cures, which bring him most renown. It was by taking upon
himself our sicknesses. "By his stripes we are healed." The Church on
earth is full of souls healed by our beloved Physician; and the
inhabitants of heaven itself confess that "He healed them all." Come,
then, my soul, publish abroad the virtue of his grace, and let it be
"to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign which shall not be cut
off."

EVENING:

"Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk."
-- John 5:8

Like many others, the impotent man had been waiting for a wonder to be
wrought, and a sign to be given. Wearily did he watch the pool, but no
angel came, or came not for him; yet, thinking it to be his only
chance, he waited still, and knew not that there was One near him whose
word could heal him in a moment. Many are in the same plight: they are
waiting for some singular emotion, remarkable impression, or celestial
vision; they wait in vain and watch for nought. Even supposing that, in
a few cases, remarkable signs are seen, yet these are rare, and no man
has a right to look for them in his own case; no man especially who
feels his impotency to avail himself of the moving of the water even if
it came. It is a very sad reflection that tens of thousands are now
waiting in the use of means, and ordinances, and vows, and resolutions,
and have so waited time out of mind, in vain, utterly in vain.
Meanwhile these poor souls forget the present Saviour, who bids them
look unto him and be saved. He could heal them at once, but they prefer
to wait for an angel and a wonder. To trust him is the sure way to
every blessing, and he is worthy of the most implicit confidence; but
unbelief makes them prefer the cold porches of Bethesda to the warm
bosom of his love. O that the Lord may turn his eye upon the multitudes
who are in this case to-night; may he forgive the slights which they
put upon his divine power, and call them by that sweet constraining
voice, to rise from the bed of despair, and in the energy of faith take
up their bed and walk. O Lord, hear our prayer for all such at this
calm hour of sunset, and ere the day breaketh may they look and live.

Courteous reader, is there anything in this portion for you?

My Utmost For His Highest : "Building For Eternity"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

May 7, 2009

BUILDING FOR ETERNITY

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth
not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have
sufficient to finish it?

Luke 14:28
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=lu+14:28&sr=1

Our Lord refers not to a cost we have to count, but to a cost which
He has counted. The cost was those thirty years in Nazareth, those
three years of popularity, scandal and hatred, the deep unfathomable
agony in Gethsemane, and the onslaught at Calvary - the pivot upon
which the whole of Time and Eternity turns. Jesus Christ has counted
the cost. Men are not going to laugh at Him at last and say - "This
man began to build, and was not able to finish."

The conditions of discipleship laid down by Our Lord in vv. 26, 27
and 33 mean that the men and women He is going to use in His mighty
building enterprises are those in whom He has done everything. "If
any man come to Me, and hate not...he cannot be My disciple." Our
Lord implies that the only men and women He will use in His building
enterprises are those who love Him personally, passionately and
devotedly beyond any of the closest ties on earth. The conditions are
stern, but they are glorious.

All that we build is going to be inspected by God. Is God going to
detect in His searching fire that we have built on the foundation of
Jesus some enterprise of our own? These are days of tremendous
enterprises, days when we are trying to work for God, and therein is
the snare. Profoundly speaking, we can never work for God. Jesus
takes us over for His enterprises, His building schemes entirely, and
no soul has any right to claim where he shall be put.

Praying with Paul : "Look to the End"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

LOOK TO THE END

1 Corinthians 15:26
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Corinthians+15:26

Dear Father, destroyer of every enemy,

Help me to look to the outcome, to the end of things, when Christ
will deliver the kingdom to you after destroying every ruler, every
authority, and every power.

Enable me to keep my eyes on his victory, for he must reign until
he has put all enemies under his feet.

Motivate me to focus on the time when even the last enemy, Death
itself, will be destroyed by our Lord.

In his name I pray. Amen.

WJD! -- No Fear -- Matthew 10:26-27

No Fear

"So don't be afraid of those people. Everything that is
hidden will be shown. Everything that is secret will be made
known. I tell you these things in the dark (secretly). But I
want you to tell these things in the light. I speak these
things quietly and only to you. But you should tell these
things freely to all people."

-- Matthew 10:26-27 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
"Do not fear!" That's the key command in the verses of this section. We
have the message of truth. We have the message that can stand in the
light of day. While it may have been whispered in darkness at one time,
the day has come for it to be recognized as the truth in the full light
of the day by all people (Matt. 28:18-20). As disciples, we must
proclaim the truth today in full view of everyone. Jesus is the one who
has revealed it. Jesus is the one who insures it. Jesus is the one who
has sent us to proclaim it. Jesus is the one who will make it come to
pass! So we must proclaim it without fear!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Almighty God, Savior and King Immortal, give me courage to
stand for your truth when darkness gathers all around me and the forces
of darkness try to shame and threaten me into silence. May my words be
truthful. May my words bring you glory and proclaim Jesus' victory. May
my words be spoken with power and conviction, gentleness and humility.
May my words be the words you would have me speak so that those who are
trapped in darkness may see your light. In the powerful name of Jesus I
pray. Amen.

May 7, 2009

VERSE:
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his
good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.
-- James 3:13
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=James+3:13

THOUGHT:
Wisdom isn't shown by our "book learning," smart comments, or
arrogance. No, true wisdom is shown by the godly character of our
lives lived with humility and kind deeds.

PRAYER:
O Father, make me wise like Jesus. Please give me the ability to
more fully know your will and more faithfully live it with kindness
and humility. May the words of my mouth and the actions of my life
