Today's Verse : Psalm 143:8

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

March 1, 2009

VERSE:
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have
put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift
up my soul.
-- Psalm 143:8
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+143:8

THOUGHT:
In nearly every disciple's life, there comes a time of
loneliness and doubt. It seems as if our prayer requests just
bounce off the ceiling and fall in broken pieces at our feet. God
seems distant, hiding, asleep, or unsympathetic to our cries for
mercy and help. Thankfully God gives us the Psalms. In the Psalms
we can find words for almost all of life's ups and downs. When we
are down, it is nice to know that others have been there before us
and have recovered their faith and vitality. But, there are just
some moments in life when we need to have God's reminders of his
love and guidance. This psalm and these words are made for such a
time. If the request in today's Scripture is not relevant to your
need, then please, pray these words for someone else. If, on the
other hand, they speak to you then please, pray them for yourself!

PRAYER:
Dear Father, please make your presence undeniably known in my
life and help me clearly see your presence and mercy. I want to
honor you, dear God, but please make your guidance clear so that I
can follow you boldly and faithfully in your will. In Jesus' name I
pray. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

The Ally of God's Grace, by Bill Denton

So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my
presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your
salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in
you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians
2:12-13 NASB).

The matter of behaviour is ours, not God's. God does not make
our character; character is formed by the reaction of our inner
disposition to outer things through our nervous system. God
does what we cannot do: He alters the mainspring and plants in
us a totally new disposition; then begins our work, we must
work out what God works in. The practising is ours, not God's.
We have to bring the mechanism of body and brain into line by
habit and make it a strong ally of the grace of God (Oswald
Chambers, "The Moral Foundation of Life: A Series of Talks on
the Ethical Principles of the Christian Life.").

We need clarity regarding grace, mercy and reformation of life. Sinners
need to know about God's grace and mercy. The reason is simple. No
amount of reform resolves the problem of sin. That's hard for us to
grasp because the sense of justice demands that we somehow make up for
wrongs done. It won't ever happen. You can't out-good the evil in your
life. God's law of sin and death says, "If you sin, you die." There is
no provision for overcoming sin by the practice of good. Forgiveness
and salvation are the result of God's grace and mercy. By grace we get
what we don't deserve. By mercy we don't get what we do deserve. All
that comes from God, and it's what makes the gospel of Jesus good news.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that there is no room for
reformation. In the gospel, there is also the call for confession of
sin, repentance, and reformation of life. God's forgiveness and
salvation may be instantaneous, but there remains a lifetime of
"working out" our salvation. That doesn't mean that we work to earn
salvation. It means that we see it through to the end. It means we
don't give up on the effort to grow in God's grace and respond to God's
mercy by distancing ourselves from all that created distance between us
and God. "Repent" is a word that basically means "change your mind."
When you change your mind about sin, the most natural, sensible thing
is to change your behavior. When one repents, one begins the process of
change. Forgiveness frees us from the condemnation sin creates, but
involved in the process is our repentance, which produces a reformation
of life. Yes, God frees us from our sins, but he also provides a
process to free us from the practice of sin. It is neither easy, nor
does it necessarily happen fast.

Something you could never be without that grace and mercy.

Our behavior must become, as Oswald Chambers might say it, a "strong
ally of the grace of God." That's an excellent way to put it. There are
at least two ways in which Christians fail in this regard. The first is
thinking that God's grace and mercy are all there is to forgiveness and
salvation. This just isn't so. God saves by His mercy and grace, but He
also intends to change us. The second mistake is to think that
reformation of life isn't all that important. Paul would ask, "How
shall we who died to sin still live in it?" (Romans 6:2).

There is another way in which Christians miss the intended effects of
the gospel. We can ignore or deny the fact that we all have a long way
to go to become the person God wants us to be. We love to classify sins
into big ones and little ones, and then further classify our personal
sins as little. We fool ourselves into thinking there just isn't much
to reform. This is a bad mistake.

Accept the salvation of God rooted in His grace and mercy. Celebrate
the work of Jesus on our behalf, doing for us what we can never do. Be
glad that you are saved, not on the basis of your merit or goodness,
but on that of Jesus Christ. Now work out that salvation by being
transformed into something you could never be without that grace and
mercy. When you fail, God's grace and mercy will be there to pick you
up, dust you off, and get you going again, so that you can stay at the
task of reformation.

Morning & Evening -- Psalms 62:5 and 1 Kings 17:16

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, February 28, 2009

MORNING:

"My expectation is from him."
-- Psalms 62:5

It is the believer's privilege to use this language. If he is looking
for aught from the world, it is a poor "expectation" indeed. But if he
looks to God for the supply of his wants, whether in temporal or
spiritual blessings, his "expectation" will not be a vain one.
Constantly he may draw from the bank of faith, and get his need
supplied out of the riches of God's lovingkindness. This I know, I had
rather have God for my banker than all the Rothschilds. My Lord never
fails to honour his promises; and when we bring them to his throne, he
never sends them back unanswered. Therefore I will wait only at his
door, for he ever opens it with the hand of munificent grace. At this
hour I will try him anew. But we have "expectations" beyond this life.
We shall die soon; and then our "expectation is from him." Do we not
expect that when we lie upon the bed of sickness he will send angels to
carry us to his bosom? We believe that when the pulse is faint, and the
heart heaves heavily, some angelic messenger shall stand and look with
loving eyes upon us, and whisper, "Sister spirit, come away!" As we
approach the heavenly gate, we expect to hear the welcome invitation,
"Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you
from the foundation of the world." We are expecting harps of gold and
crowns of glory; we are hoping soon to be amongst the multitude of
shining ones before the throne; we are looking forward and longing for
the time when we shall be like our glorious Lord-for "We shall see him
as he is." Then if these be thine "expectations," O my soul, live for
God; live with the desire and resolve to glorify him from whom cometh
all thy supplies, and of whose grace in thy election, redemption, and
calling, it is that thou hast any "expectation" of coming glory.

EVENING:

"The barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil
fail, according to the word of the Lord, which he spake by
Elijah."
-- 1 Kings 17:16

See the faithfulness of divine love. You observe that this woman had
daily necessities. She had herself and her son to feed in a time of
famine; and now, in addition, the prophet Elijah was to be fed too. But
though the need was threefold, yet the supply of meal wasted not, for
she had a constant supply. Each day she made calls upon the barrel, but
yet each day it remained the same. You, dear reader, have daily
necessities, and because they come so frequently, you are apt to fear
that the barrel of meal will one day be empty, and the cruse of oil
will fail you. Rest assured that, according to the Word of God, this
shall not be the case. Each day, though it bring its trouble, shall
bring its help; and though you should live to outnumber the years of
Methuselah, and though your needs should be as many as the sands of the
seashore, yet shall God's grace and mercy last through all your
necessities, and you shall never know a real lack. For three long
years, in this widow's days, the heavens never saw a cloud, and the
stars never wept a holy tear of dew upon the wicked earth: famine, and
desolation, and death, made the land a howling wilderness, but this
woman never was hungry, but always joyful in abundance. So shall it be
with you. You shall see the sinner's hope perish, for he trusts his
native strength; you shall see the proud Pharisee's confidence totter,
for he builds his hope upon the sand; you shall see even your own
schemes blasted and withered, but you yourself shall find that your
place of defence shall be the munition of rocks: "Your bread shall be
given you, and your water shall be sure." Better have God for your
guardian, than the Bank of England for your possession. You might spend
the wealth of the Indies, but the infinite riches of God you can never
exhaust.

My Utmost For His Highest : "Do Ye Now Believe?"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

February 28, 2009

DO YE NOW BELIEVE?

By this we believe ... Jesus answered, Do ye now
believe?

John 16:30-31
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=joh+16:30-31&sr=1

Now we believe. Jesus says - Do you? The time is coming when you will
leave Me alone. Many a Christian worker has left Jesus Christ alone
and gone into work from a sense of duty, or from a sense of need
arising out of his own particular discernment. The reason for this is
the absence of the resurrection life of Jesus. The soul has got out
of intimate contact with God by leaning to its own religious
understanding. There is no sin in it, and no punishment attached to
it; but when the soul realizes how he has hindered his understanding
of Jesus Christ, and produced for himself perplexities and sorrows
and difficulties, it is with shame and contrition he has to come
back.

We need to rely on the resurrection life of Jesus much deeper down
than we do, to get into the habit of steadily referring everything
back to Him; instead of this we make our common - sense decisions and
ask God to bless them. He cannot, it is not in His domain, it is
severed from reality. If we do a thing from a sense of duty, we are
putting up a standard in competition with Jesus Christ. We become a
"superior person," and say - "Now in this matter I must do this and
that." We have put our sense of duty on the throne instead of the
resurrection life of Jesus. We are not told to walk in the light of
conscience or of a sense of duty, but to walk in the light as God is
in the light. When we do anything from a sense of duty, we can back
it up by argument; when we do anything in obedience to the Lord,
there is no argument possible; that is why a saint can be easily
ridiculed.

Praying with Paul : "Mutual Acceptance"

MUTUAL ACCEPTANCE

Romans 14:1-16
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+14:1-16

Dear Father, foundation of all our lives,

Make me compassionate and generous toward my brothers and sisters
in Christ. Let us welcome each other, and not dispute over
opinions. May I never pass judgment on a brother or sister, for you
have welcomed them. They are your servants. It is before you that
they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for you are able to
make them stand.

Let us be fully convinced in our own minds about honoring certain
days, or about eating certain foods. Whether we honor a day or eat
a food, or whether we abstain, may we do it (or not do it) in
honor of you.

Thank you that none of us lives to self, and none dies to self.
Whether we live or die, we are yours! Thank you that Christ died to
this end: that he might be Lord both of those who have died and of
us who live. We know from what Jesus said: that all your saints are
alive to you.

In the name of Jesus, instill consideration for each other into
all of us. Amen.

WJD! -- Reliability! -- Matthew 5:35-37

Reliability!

"Don't make a vow using the name of the earth, because the
earth belongs to God. Don't make a vow using the name of
Jerusalem, because that is the city of the great King (God).
And don't even say that your own head is proof that you will
keep your vow. You cannot make one hair on your head become
white or black. Say only 'yes' if you mean yes, and say only
'no' if you mean no. If you must say more than 'yes' or 'no,'
it is from the Evil One (the devil)."

-- Matthew 5:35-37 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Don't break your word! In the Kingdom Family of God, the truth is
insured by our integrity, not by something artificial outside us. We
shouldn't have to swear to insure our word! But Jesus carries it one
step further when he tells us: Don't swear on an oath to guarantee your
word. Let the truthfulness of your speech be the standard mode in which
you live, not something that has to reach out and grab for reliability
in something external.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Almighty and dependable God, I want to be a person of integrity. I want
my words to be true. I want people to be able to trust my word when I
give them my word. Please give me strength and courage to not
exaggerate, lie, break my word, or stretch the truth. As your child,
blessed by the many promises you have kept, I want to bless others by
keeping my word. In Jesus' holy name I pray. Amen.
