Today's Verse : Psalm 100:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------

January 11, 2009

VERSE:
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

-- Psalm 100:1
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Psalm+100:1

THOUGHT:
With joy, let's praise and make a joyful noise to the LORD of
lords and the King of kings today. Let's find short moments during
our day, seize them, and use them to give thanks and praise to our
Father in heaven. When we are blessed, let's take a moment and
pause for praise. In every good thing, let's share a phrase of
praise to our gracious Father.

PRAYER:
Loving and tender Father, God of mercy and might, I find it
absolutely incredible that you let me know you, the awesome and
holy Creator. You are so gracious to listen to me, one of your
creatures. Your mercy has saved me; I praise you! Your love has
remade me; I thank you. Your strength has given me power to change;
I appreciate you. You are wonderful, dear Father, and I love you
with all of my heart. I praise you in the name of Jesus, your
greatest gift. Amen.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Marcus Welby, Jesus Christ Superstar, & Bill Parcels, by Danny Sims

Marcus Welby, Jesus Christ Superstar, Bill Parcells and the Dallas
Cowboys ... I promise, I'm gonna get around to all of them in this one
article!

Some of you may remember the old TV commercial when Robert Young
(previously the star of "Marcus Welby, M.D.") famously said, "I'm not a
doctor, but I play one on television." I think he was selling aspirin
or something.

I got to thinking about that line when I ran across Ted Neely's story.
Since the 1970s, Ted Neeley has been playing the part of Jesus in the
musical "Jesus Christ Superstar."

He's 64 years old, roughly 30 years older than Jesus was when He went
to the cross. But no matter his age, Neely keeps playing Jesus to large
audiences. Neeley recently said this:

I'm only playing Jesus. He got it right the first time. I'm still
working on it, you see. The key word there is 'playing.' I'm a
performer. I'm pretending to be something which I am not.

If this quote were applied to our faith, there is something I can
relate to as a follower of Jesus. But, there is also something here
that bothers me.

"You are what you are!"

In the "relate to" category, disciples are surely not Jesus. And I like
the humility of saying "I'm still working on it." That's good stuff.

As for what troubles me, genuine disciples are not "pretending to be"
anything. We understand faith is not a role to be performed. Faith is a
life transformed. Heroes of faith are not great actors on stage. They
are ordinary men and women who have taken the words of Jesus seriously
when He says "lay your life down" (John 15:13) or "take up your cross"
(Luke 9:23).

This is what you might call "Bill Parcels theology." You know how he is
fond of saying, "You are what you are." That applies.

I was thinking about this recently, watching the Dallas Cowboys get
blasted by the Philadelphia Eagles and lose out on the playoffs. "You
are what you are ..." Well, they are not so good. Which brings me full
circle, back to Marcus Welby and that aspirin ...

Morning & Evening -- 2 Timothy 4:8 and Job 19:26

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, January 10, 2009

MORNING:

"There is laid up for me a crown of righteousness."
-- 2 Timothy 4:8

Doubting one! thou hast often said, "I fear I shall never enter
heaven." Fear not! all the people of God shall enter there. I love the
quaint saying of a dying man, who exclaimed, "I have no fear of going
home; I have sent all before me; God's finger is on the latch of my
door, and I am ready for him to enter." "But," said one, "are you not
afraid lest you should miss your inheritance?" "Nay," said he, "nay;
there is one crown in heaven which the angel Gabriel could not wear, it
will fit no head but mine. There is one throne in heaven which Paul the
apostle could not fill; it was made for me, and I shall have it." O
Christian, what a joyous thought! thy portion is secure; "there
remaineth a rest." "But cannot I forfeit it?" No, it is entailed. If I
be a child of God I shall not lose it. It is mine as securely as if I
were there. Come with me, believer, and let us sit upon the top of
Nebo, and view the goodly land, even Canaan. Seest thou that little
river of death glistening in the sunlight, and across it dost thou see
the pinnacles of the eternal city? Dost thou mark the pleasant country,
and all its joyous inhabitants? Know, then, that if thou couldst fly
across thou wouldst see written upon one of its many mansions, "This
remaineth for such a one; preserved for him only. He shall be caught up
to dwell for ever with God." Poor doubting one, see the fair
inheritance; it is thine. If thou believest in the Lord Jesus, if thou
hast repented of sin, if thou hast been renewed in heart, thou art one
of the Lord's people, and there is a place reserved for thee, a crown
laid up for thee, a harp specially provided for thee. No one else shall
have thy portion, it is reserved in heaven for thee, and thou shalt
have it ere long, for there shall be no vacant thrones in glory when
all the chosen are gathered in.

EVENING:

"In my flesh shall I see God."
-- Job 19:26

Mark the subject of Job's devout anticipation "I shall see God." He
does not say, "I shall see the saints"-though doubtless that will be
untold felicity-but, "I shall see God." It is not-"I shall see the
pearly gates, I shall behold the walls of jasper, I shall gaze upon the
crowns of gold," but "I shall see God." This is the sum and substance
of heaven, this is the joyful hope of all believers. It is their
delight to see him now in the ordinances by faith. They love to behold
him in communion and in prayer; but there in heaven they shall have an
open and unclouded vision, and thus seeing "him as he is," shall be
made completely like him. Likeness to God-what can we wish for more?
And a sight of God-what can we desire better? Some read the passage,
"Yet, I shall see God in my flesh," and find here an allusion to
Christ, as the "Word made flesh," and that glorious beholding of him
which shall be the splendour of the latter days. Whether so or not it
is certain that Christ shall be the object of our eternal vision; nor
shall we ever want any joy beyond that of seeing him. Think not that
this will be a narrow sphere for the mind to dwell in. It is but one
source of delight, but that source is infinite. All his attributes
shall be subjects for contemplation, and as he is infinite under each
aspect, there is no fear of exhaustion. His works, his gifts, his love
to us, and his glory in all his purposes, and in all his actions, these
shall make a theme which will be ever new. The patriarch looked forward
to this sight of God as a personal enjoyment. "Whom mine eye shall
behold, and not another." Take realizing views of heaven's bliss; think
what it will be to you. "Thine eyes shall see the King in his beauty."
All earthly brightness fades and darkens as we gaze upon it, but here
is a brightness which can never dim, a glory which can never fade-"I
shall see God."

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Opened Sight"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

January 10, 2009

THE OPENED SIGHT

To open their eyes ... that they may receive ...

Acts 26:18
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ac+26:18&sr=1

This verse is the grandest condensation of the propaganda of a
disciple of Jesus Christ in the whole of the New Testament.

The first sovereign work of grace is summed up in the word - "that
they may receive remission of sins." When a man fails in personal
Christian experience, it is nearly always because he has never
received anything. The only sign that a man is saved is that he has
received something from Jesus Christ. Our part as workers for God is
to open men's eyes that they may turn themselves from darkness to
light; but that is not salvation, that is conversion - the effort of
a roused human being. I do not think it is too sweeping to say that
the majority of nominal Christians are of this order; their eyes are
opened, but they have received nothing. Conversion is not
regeneration. This is one of the neglected factors in our preaching
today. When a man is born again, he knows that it is because he has
received something as a gift from Almighty God and not because of his
own decision. People register their vows, and sign their pledges, and
determine to go through, but none of this is salvation. Salvation
means that we are brought to the place where we are able to receive
something from God on the authority of Jesus Christ, viz., remission
of sins.

Then there follows the second mighty work of grace - "and inheritance
among them which are sanctified." In sanctification the regenerated
soul deliberately gives up his right to himself to Jesus Christ, and
identifies himself entirely with God's interest in other men.

Praying with Paul : "No Partiality"

--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

NO PARTIALITY

Romans 2:8-11
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Romans+2:8-11

Dear Father, holy and righteous judge,

I know that you will render to every man according to his works.
To those who are factious and obey wickedness instead of the truth,
there will be wrath and fury.

You have foretold tribulation and distress for every human being
who does evil, to the Jew first and also the non-Jew, but glory and
honor and peace for every one who does good, to the Jew first and
also to the non-Jew. For you show no partiality.

Help me do what is good, but not out of my own resources, for my
goodness is unacceptable to you. Help me do what is good by living
in and for Christ, whose goodness you will accept.

By your grace alone am I saved, as I entrust my soul to you. Thank
you that you will impute Christ's righteousness to me on this
basis.

In the name of Jesus I ask for your acceptance through my faith.
Amen.

WJD! -- Of Deceit and Joy -- Matthew 2:7-10

Of Deceit and Joy

Then Herod had a secret meeting with the wise men from the
east. Herod learned from the wise men the exact time they
first saw the star. Then Herod sent the wise men to
Bethlehem. Herod said to the wise men, "Go and look carefully
to find the new baby. When you find the baby, come tell me.
Then I can go worship him too." The wise men heard the king
and then left. They saw the same star they had seen in the
east. The wise men followed the star. The star went before
them until it stopped above the place where the baby was. The
wise men were happy to see the star. They were very excited.

-- Matthew 2:7-10 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Herod is that great reminder of Satan's design for us: he is a liar and
murderer, and has been since the beginning! (See John 8:44.) Under the
pretense of worship, Herod seeks to eliminate God's choice for the
throne Herod thinks he himself occupies. Satan had so blinded Herod
that he would even use the truth of prophetic Scripture to kill God's
chosen Messiah. Thwarted only because of God's timing and will, Herod
anticipates Judas, who will betray the Lord for another type of
personal gain. A question we need to ask is this: "How many times have
I betrayed him for nothing?"

TODAY'S PRAYER:
Holy and Righteous Father, in the power of Jesus' name, please drive
the influence of Satan's deceptions from my mind and heart. Give me the
ability to see your truth and be protected from Satan's schemes to
destroy me, my faith, and those I love. In Jesus' powerful name I pray.
Amen.
