Today's Verse : Luke 12:31

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / TODAY'S VERSE from HEARTLIGHT -- http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

December 31, 2008

VERSE:
[Jesus said:] "But seek his kingdom, and these things will be
given to you as well."
-- Luke 12:31
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Luke+12:31

THOUGHT:
As we stand at the end of one year and look into the beginning
of a new one, before the resolutions are made and broken, and
before this current year has come to an end tonight, we need to
declare to the Lord and in our hearts that the following is our
first priority: "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord
.." (Joshua 24:15b).

PRAYER:
As I conclude this year and begin another, I pray that you will
help me keep my eyes on Jesus, dear Father, and my heart focused on
your will. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: New Trust 2

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
New Trust 2
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O LORD, have never abandoned anyone who searches for you. Psalm 9:10 NLT

Yesterday this series began on the word trust as it occurs in the Bible; the point made that we must choose to trust in the God of the Bible. As a minister, I meet so many people who struggle with life and cannot find a place to turn for answers. I know, through the Bible and experience that Christ is sufficient for all their needs, that He alone holds all the answers to the problems of life, and that, by faith, they need to trust in Christ alone. I watch many times, however, as people choose other methods to try and solve their dilemmas. Of course, this is always a dead-end path and the person continues to struggle.

I will not to pretend to know all the reasons why one person chooses and another rejects the truth of the Bible, but I do know this. The more a person knows about God, the more that person will understand and actually like the person of God. God is very likeable. (Please, I mean no irreverence or disrespect in that statement.) God will stand the test of time in being faithful. His love truly does endure forever. God loves the unlovable. He gives mercy and grace to sinners. He mends broken hearts. If you and I will ever take the time to get to know the God who created the universe, we will love Him more and more.

Have you been trusting God lately? If not, maybe it is not as much of a trust problem as it is a knowledge problem. Perhaps you should get to know God better, and then you will love and trust Him more.

Now that you've read Today's Mustard Seed Thought, have a little fun and go to the Web and try the Word Search Game. It's always based the current Mustard Seed Thought.

=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Is It Really Over?, by Tom Norvell

The disciples had been with Jesus for three years. They had watched Him
perform His miracles, witnessed His encounters with the religious
leaders, and experienced His kind and compassionate nature. They had
asked Him questions and heard His answers. They had seen Him walk on
water and disappear into the mountains. They had been shocked when they
found Him talking with a woman from Samaria, and perturbed with Him
when He took too much time with children.

For three years they dreamed with Him about the coming Kingdom, even
though their images of the future were quite different. They had
envisioned positions of power and prestige, but He had reminded them
that their role should be that of a servant. The disciples had given up
their homes, jobs, and ambitions to follow this One who promised to use
them to change the world.

Then, as they stood by paralyzed by fear, He was arrested. He was
accused of blasphemy. He was tried and convicted. He was beaten and
tortured and ridiculed and humiliated. He was crucified. He died. He
was buried.

In those quiet difficult moments after His death, surely they struggled
with what they had seen, with what they had done, and what they had not
done. Questions and doubt must have filled their minds.

"We thought ... "

"What about ... "

"Why ... "

"We expected ... "

"We hoped ... "

"Is it really over?"

Within a few hours most of us will see the end of the year (if it has
not already occurred where you are). With the turn of a page on the
calendar, and the tick of the clock, the old year will be gone and a
new year will be ushered in. As the transition takes place some of us
will be disappointed with the way things have turned out during the
last twelve months. Some will be amazed that the year has gone so
rapidly. Some will be filled with regret. Some will be relieved.

"We thought we would have been better off financially."

"We meant to work less and spend more time with our family."

"We intended to get more involved in our church."

"We expected to make more progress on our marriage relationship."

"We hoped ... "

"We wish ... "

"Is it really over?"

"Is it really over?"

There is good news.

As the disciples struggled with their questions, doubts, and regrets
they received the greatest news they could have ever imagined. "The
tomb is empty! He is alive!"

As we deal with all the things that we should have done, could have
done, wish we had done, and ought to have done, the news is also good:
"Happy New Year!" We get another chance.

The year has ended, but your life is not over! It's a new year. Make
the most of it.

Morning & Evening -- Ecclesiastes 7:8 and 2 Samuel 2:26

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

MORNING:

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof."
-- Ecclesiastes 7:8

Look at David's Lord and Master; see his beginning. He was despised and
rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Would you
see the end? He sits at his Father's right hand, expecting until his
enemies be made his footstool. "As he is, so are we also in this
world." You must bear the cross, or you shall never wear the crown; you
must wade through the mire, or you shall never walk the golden
pavement. Cheer up, then, poor Christian. "Better is the end of a thing
than the beginning thereof." See that creeping worm, how contemptible
its appearance! It is the beginning of a thing. Mark that insect with
gorgeous wings, playing in the sunbeams, sipping at the flower bells,
full of happiness and life; that is the end thereof. That caterpillar
is yourself, until you are wrapped up in the chrysalis of death; but
when Christ shall appear you shall be like him, for you shall see him
as he is. Be content to be like him, a worm and no man, that like him
you may be satisfied when you wake up in his likeness. That
rough-looking diamond is put upon the wheel of the lapidary. He cuts it
on all sides. It loses much-much that seemed costly to itself. The king
is crowned; the diadem is put upon the monarch's head with trumpet's
joyful sound. A glittering ray flashes from that coronet, and it beams
from that very diamond which was just now so sorely vexed by the
lapidary. You may venture to compare yourself to such a diamond, for
you are one of God's people; and this is the time of the cutting
process. Let faith and patience have their perfect work, for in the day
when the crown shall be set upon the head of the King, Eternal,
Immortal, Invisible, one ray of glory shall stream from you. "They
shall be mine," saith the Lord, "in the day when I make up my jewels."
"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof."

EVENING:

"Knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter
end?"
-- 2 Samuel 2:26

If, O my reader! thou art merely a professor, and not a possessor of
the faith that is in Christ Jesus, the following lines are a true ketch
of thine end.

You are a respectable attendant at a place of worship; you go because
others go, not because your heart is right with God. This is your
beginning. I will suppose that for the next twenty or thirty years you
will be spared to go on as you do now, professing religion by an
outward attendance upon the means of grace, but having no heart in the
matter. Tread softly, for I must show you the deathbed of such a one as
yourself. Let us gaze upon him gently. A clammy sweat is on his brow,
and he wakes up crying, "O God, it is hard to die. Did you send for my
minister?" "Yes, he is coming." The minister comes. "Sir, I fear that I
am dying!" "Have you any hope?" "I cannot say that I have. I fear to
stand before my God; oh! pray for me." The prayer is offered for him
with sincere earnestness, and the way of salvation is for the
ten-thousandth time put before him, but before he has grasped the rope,
I see him sink. I may put my finger upon those cold eyelids, for they
will never see anything here again. But where is the man, and where are
the man's true eyes? It is written, "In hell he lifted up his eyes,
being in torment." Ah! why did he not lift up his eyes before? Because
he was so accustomed to hear the gospel that his soul slept under it.
Alas! if you should lift up your eyes there, how bitter will be your
wailings. Let the Saviour's own words reveal the woe: "Father Abraham,
send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool
my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame." There is a frightful
meaning in those words. May you never have to spell it out by the red
light of Jehovah's wrath!

"AND EVERY VIRTUE WE POSSESS"

All my fresh springs shall be in Thee.

Psalms 87:7
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=ps+87:7&sr=1

Our Lord never patches up our natural virtues, He re-makes the whole
man on the inside. "Put on the new man," i.e., see that your natural
human life puts on the garb that is in keeping with the new life. The
life God plants in us develops its own virtues, not the virtues of
Adam but of Jesus Christ. Watch how God will wither up your
confidence in natural virtues after sanctification, and in any power
you have, until you learn to draw your life from the reservoir of the
resurrection life of Jesus. Thank God if you are going through a
drying-up experience!

The sign that God is at work in us is that He corrupts confidence in
the natural virtues, because they are not promises of what we are
going to be, but renmants of what God created man to be. We will
cling to the natural virtues, while all the time God is trying to get
us into contact with the life of Jesus Christ which can never be
described in terms of the natural virtues. It is the saddest thing to
see people in the service of God depending on that which the grace of
God never gave them, depending on what they have by the accident of
heredity. God does not build up our natural virtues and transfigure
them, because our natural virtues can never come anywhere near what
Jesus Christ wants. No natural love, no natural patience, no natural
purity can ever come up to His demands. But as we bring every bit of
our bodily life into harmony with the new life which God has put in
us, He will exhibit in us the virtues that were characteristic of the
Lord Jesus.

"And every virtue we possess
Is His alone."

Praying with Paul : "Filling the Earth with God's Goodness"

FILLING THE EARTH WITH GOD'S GOODNESS

Philemon 1-16
http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=Philemon+1-16

Dear Father, bestower of freedom,

Thank you for the love and the faith which you have put in your
people. Please help them share this with each other and with the
world. Let this promote the knowledge of all the good that is ours
in Christ Jesus. Put such joy in our hearts and such gladness on
our faces that people will want to know what makes us happy.

Help each of us to render such help and comfort, expressing our
love, that the hearts of all your holy people will be refreshed.
Help us not to make demands on each other, but to entreat, seeking
consent, so that the good we ask from others might not be given
through compulsion but through free will. Help us to bind up broken
relationships. Help us to be willing to step into the breach, to
enable others to make amends, even if it costs us money, effort, or
time.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with our spirits. In his name I
ask. Amen.

WJD! -- Bewildered and Frightened! -- Mark 16:8

Bewildered and Frightened!

The women were very afraid and confused. They left the tomb
and ran away. The women did not tell about what happened,
because they were afraid.

-- Mark 16:8 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
Mark wanted us to know two crucial things about Jesus. First, Jesus was
mighty and powerful, something even the demons recognized and feared.
Second, despite all of his power, he submitted himself to the will of
God and went to the Cross to ransom us from sin and death. Mark knows
Jesus was raised from the dead. But he uses the women and their
bewildered fear remind us of the resurrection -- not because they
doubted, but because they believed. Jesus changed everything in their
understanding of the Messiah, the Son of God. (Mark 1:1) He was willing
to go to the Cross even though he clearly had the power to prevent it.
His dying didn't fit and they couldn't understand how this could be so.
All their hopes had been dashed with his crucifixion and their lives
are ruined with his death. On this morning, however, they found out he
was raised from the dead and they were told this good news by an angel
at Jesus' empty tomb. How could they not be bewildered and fearful?
Their worlds were forever changed. If Jesus could rise from the dead,
then what would happen next? If they followed Jesus, what could the
resurrected Jesus do through them? And if Jesus could use them to "turn
the world upside down" with his message and his follower's courage,
what can he do with us? So let's join these faithful women at the empty
tomb, bewildered and frightened, but full of expectation at the thought
of what lies ahead for us!

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, release the resurrection power of Jesus in our day and in our
lives. Empower us to live for you and impact our world in a similar way
to how these first followers of Jesus impacted their world. In Jesus'
name I pray. Amen.
