=========================== TODAY'S ARTICLE ==========================

Freedom from 'The Fear', by Phil Ware

What do you most fear? Your answer is probably dependent upon what age
you are!

As babies, we feared falling or being abandoned. As children, we feared
monsters in the closet or under the bed -- most of us can remember
pulling up the covers over our heads because we thought we saw the
closet door open or heard a strange noise. As teens, we feared not
fitting in or being embarrassed by our parents. As young adults, we
feared not finding a job. As we grow older, we fear for our kids, our
parents, our health, our job, and a host of other things.

For most of us, these fears are not oppressive or dominating, but they
lie in the back of our consciousness like a lion waiting in the grass
to pounce on its prey. Given the right moment, fear attaches to us.

This should not be surprising. The first negative response people had
to God was fear!

But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?"

He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid ... so I
hid"

(Genesis 3:9-10).

Jesus came to give us freedom, especially freedom from "The Fear" --
the power behind all the other lesser fears. Without the hope we have
in Jesus, "The Fear" would mock us in the vulnerable moments of our
lives. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit tells us that Jesus came to free us
from "The Fear":

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their
humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the
power of death -- that is, the devil -- and free those who all
their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death (Hebrews
2:14-15).

So how does this fit in with the series on the seven sayings of Jesus
on the Cross?

Remember what Jesus said to the repentant thief on a cross next to him?

"I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke
23:43).

He's telling this criminal, under the torture of capital punishment,
that death would not claim him: Jesus would see him in paradise!

While there has been much discussion about paradise -- where it is,
what it is like, and how it fits into our death experience and meshes
with our hope of heaven -- I believe two things with certainty:

1. We are not separated from Jesus by death, but are with him ... in
Paradise. That appears to be Jesus' promise here, but it is also
something the apostle Paul believed about himself (Philippians
1:19-24) and taught others (2 Corinthians 5:6-8). For us, Stephen's
experience as he was stoned to death awaits: "'Look,' he said, 'I
see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of
God'" (Acts 7:56).

2. No matter what the exact nature of our existence with Jesus in
Paradise is like, we'll not miss the big party that lies ahead for
Jesus' followers at his return (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). Paul told
the Corinthian Christians that on this day, we will be given
imperishable bodies and "death will be swallowed up in victory" (1
Corinthians 15:50-54).

While this doesn't mean we won't ever have a fearful moment or two in
our lives, it does mean we can be sure of our ultimate outcome -- we're
going to be with Jesus! We have a way to face "The Fear"!

Does this promise really make a difference for Jesus' followers?

When we look at Stephen (Acts 7:54-59) or the apostle Paul (2 Timothy
4:6-8), or many of the martyrs through the centuries, the answer is
clear: yes! Yes, the assurance that "today you will be with me in
paradise" matters to Jesus' followers!

This promise is as much for us as it was for the thief!

But what about "normal folks" like us?

My father died when I was twenty-five. About eighteen months before his
death, he had reached a point when everyone thought he would not
survive. I stayed with him after everyone had left. He was weak and had
to communicate with a small wax tablet. He was barely able to hold the
stylus and make scratchings on the cellophane sheet on the wax. But
when I asked him if he was afraid about dying, he scratched out this
message: "Dead -- not afraid. Dying -- yes, a little."

Since that special night with my dad, I've had this same message
repeated to me again and again by those who believe in Jesus. God's
people are confident that Jesus is waiting for them on the other side
of death. Death will not claim them or keep them. However, they did
have some concern, even a little fear, about the process of dying. Yet
there is this absolute confidence in going to be with Jesus when death
occurs.

Jesus faced death and conquered it -- not just for himself, but also
for all of us who belong to him. We have the assurance that Jesus is
waiting to welcome us on the other side of death. (In fact, as we will
discuss in a few weeks, Jesus never leaves us or abandons us any step
of the way!)

So as you face your battles with "The Fear," remember these assuring
words of Jesus: "Today you will be with me in paradise." As we face our
own mortality, this promise is for us as much as it was for the thief
on the cross.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Does believing Jesus help you as you face the reality of death in your
life or the life of someone you love?

Death is described in Scripture as a fear that dominated human beings
for generation upon generation. Do you think we fear death today?

I'd love to hear from you on my blog about your thoughts on this
matter:

Morning & Evening -- Exodus 20:25 and Matthew 28:1

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / Charles Spurgeon's MORNING & EVENING

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday, July 14, 2008

MORNING:

"If thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it."
-- Exodus 20:25

God's altar was to be built of unhewn stones, that no trace of human
skill or labour might be seen upon it. Human wisdom delights to trim
and arrange the doctrines of the cross into a system more artificial
and more congenial with the depraved tastes of fallen nature; instead,
however, of improving the gospel carnal wisdom pollutes it, until it
becomes another gospel, and not the truth of God at all. All
alterations and amendments of the Lord's own Word are defilements and
pollutions. The proud heart of man is very anxious to have a hand in
the justification of the soul before God; preparations for Christ are
dreamed of, humblings and repentings are trusted in, good works are
cried up, natural ability is much vaunted, and by all means the attempt
is made to lift up human tools upon the divine altar. It were well if
sinners would remember that so far from perfecting the Saviour's work,
their carnal confidences only pollute and dishonour it. The Lord alone
must be exalted in the work of atonement, and not a single mark of
man's chisel or hammer will be endured. There is an inherent blasphemy
in seeking to add to what Christ Jesus in His dying moments declared to
be finished, or to improve that in which the Lord Jehovah finds perfect
satisfaction. Trembling sinner, away with thy tools, and fall upon thy
knees in humble supplication; and accept the Lord Jesus to be the altar
of thine atonement, and rest in him alone.

Many professors may take warning from this morning's text as to the
doctrines which they believe. There is among Christians far too much
inclination to square and reconcile the truths of revelation; this is a
form of irreverence and unbelief, let us strive against it, and receive
truth as we find it; rejoicing that the doctrines of the Word are
unhewn stones, and so are all the more fit to build an altar for the
Lord.

EVENING:

"As it began to dawn, came Magdalene, to see the sepulchre."
-- Matthew 28:1

Let us learn from Mary Magdalene how to obtain fellowship with the Lord
Jesus. Notice how she sought. She sought the Saviour very early in the
morning. If thou canst wait for Christ, and be patient in the hope of
having fellowship with him at some distant season, thou wilt never have
fellowship at all; for the heart that is fitted for communion is a
hungering and a thirsting heart. She sought him also with very great
boldness. Other disciples fled from the sepulchre, for they trembled
and were amazed; but Mary, it is said, "stood" at the sepulchre. If you
would have Christ with you, seek him boldly. Let nothing hold you back.
Defy the world. Press on where others flee. She sought Christ
faithfully-she stood at the sepulchre. Some find it hard to stand by a
living Saviour, but she stood by a dead one. Let us seek Christ after
this mode, cleaving to the very least thing that has to do with him,
remaining faithful though all others should forsake him. Note further,
she sought Jesus earnestly-she stood "weeping". Those tear-droppings
were as spells that led the Saviour captive, and made him come forth
and show himself to her. If you desire Jesus' presence, weep after it!
If you cannot be happy unless he come and say to you, "Thou art my
beloved," you will soon hear his voice. Lastly, she sought the Saviour
only. What cared she for angels, she turned herself back from them; her
search was only for her Lord. If Christ be your one and only love, if
your heart has cast out all rivals, you will not long lack the comfort
of his presence. Mary Magdalene sought thus because she loved much. Let
us arouse ourselves to the same intensity of affection; let our heart,
like Mary's, be full of Christ, and our love, like hers, will be
satisfied with nothing short of himself. O Lord, reveal thyself to us
this evening!

My Utmost For His Highest : "The Account With Persecution"

-/\/\-----------------------------------------------------------------
\ / MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST --

http://www.heartlight.org/
--\/------------------------------------------------------------------

July 14, 2008

THE ACCOUNT WITH PERSECUTION

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil; but
whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to
him the other also."

Matthew 5:39

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=mt+5:39&sr=1

These verses reveal the humiliation of being a Christian. Naturally,
if a man does not hit back, it is because he is a coward; but
spiritually if a man does not hit back, it is a manifestation of the
Son of God in him. When you are insulted, you must not only not
resent it, but make it an occasion to exhibit the Son of God. You
cannot imitate the disposition of Jesus; it is either there or it is
not. To the saint personal insult becomes the occasion of revealing
the incredible sweetness of the Lord Jesus.

The teaching of the Sermon on the Mount is not - Do your duty, but -
Do what is not your duty. It is not your duty to go the second mile,
to turn the other cheek, but Jesus says if we are His disciples we
shall always do these things. There will be no spirit of - "Oh, well,
I cannot do any more, I have been so misrepresented and
misunderstood." Every time I insist upon my rights, I hurt the Son of
God; whereas I can prevent Jesus from being hurt if I take the blow
myself. That is the meaning of filling up that which is behind of the
afflictions of Christ. The disciple realizes that it is his Lord's
honour that is at stake in his life, not his own honour.

Never look for right in the other man, but never cease to be right
yourself. We are always looking for justice; the teaching of the
Sermon on the Mount is - Never look for justice, but never cease to
give it.

Mustard Seed Thoughts: God Talking

ChristWeb.com : Mustard Seed Thoughts
God Talking
By: Ron Edmondson Mustard Seed Thoughts
So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if He calls you, say, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 1 Samuel 3:9 NIV

Has God been trying to get your attention lately? Is God trying to tell you something? Are you having a hard time hearing?

Samuel was in training to be a great man of God. He was set apart from birth to be God's annointed one. God had something to tell Samuel, but Samuel couldn't yet recognize the voice of God. Eli told Samuel to lie down and simply say, "Speak Lord, your servant is listening."

You and I live in an often crowded and busy world. (and your now saying..."OFTEN...now that's an understatement!") I can't remember the last time I had a day with nothing to do. My home is filled with noise! (Most of it good, of course.)

Quite often I find myself surrounded by the "stuff" of life. The idea of hearing from God in the midst of all this clutter seems nearly impossible. Yet, I know that my very existence hangs on that relationship. I need a fresh touch from the Living God! I need a word from my Father! How about you?

Perhaps you can identify with my situation. You desire to hear from God, but your life is too thick for His word to filter through. Why don't we heed the advice of Eli? How about we do what Samuel did?

First Samuel got still. He laid down, in the stillness of the night and waited for God to speak. Second, Samuel listened expectantly. He knew he was waiting, and he knew who he was waiting for. He wasn't surprised when God spoke, because he was anxiously awaiting His voice.

Third, and perhaps most important, Samuel obeyed God's word. It is one thing to hear from God, and quite another to do something about it. When God speaks to you, that is a monumental event! It is important to obey.

God may be trying to speak to you at this point in your life. Are you in a position to hear?

Wait a m inute...I think I hear something now....

Stop, wait, listen...and obey the word of God today!

Praying with Paul : "A Marvelous Message"

A MARVELOUS MESSAGE

1 Thessalonians 1:2-8

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=1+Thessalonians+1:2-8

Dear Father,

Thank you for the great numbers of believers in Jesus Christ, for
their works of faith, their labors of love, and their steadfastness
of hope which they have in Christ. Thank you for choosing all of us
and calling us to yourself by the Good News about Jesus. Thank you
that this marvelous message came to us not only in word, but in
power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. Thank you
for the example of your apostles as demonstrations of what the Good
News about Jesus can do in human lives.

Help us to imitate their labors, suffering, and joys in the Holy
Spirit so that we may become examples to others.

Let our faith, like theirs, go forth everywhere to all men so that
all men will turn from vain idols and self-worship to serve you,
the living and true God.

In the name of Jesus I pray and give thanks to you. Amen.

Entrance Requirements?

Jesus started to leave, but a man ran to him and bowed on his
knees before Jesus. The man asked, "Good teacher, what must I
do to get the life that never ends?"

-- Mark 10:17 (ERV)

KEY THOUGHT:
This is a great question if it comes from a genuine heart. You will
have to read for yourself and decide if this man's heart was genuine.
Better yet, why not look at your own heart and ask the Lord Jesus this
same question. I bet if you listen this week, he will make that clear
to you if he has not already done so.

TODAY'S PRAYER:
O God, please help me be confident of my future with you. May that
confidence be based on my obedient response to your gracious gift of
salvation. I trust that by the power the Holy Spirit, you will empower
me to be and to do what pleases you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Today's Verse : 2 Chronicles 7:14

July 14, 2008

VERSE:
"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves
and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then
will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal
their land."
-- 2 Chronicles 7:14

http://www.SearchGodsWord.org/desk/?query=2+Chronicles+7:14

THOUGHT:
While this is a passage often emphasized when talking about the
problems with nations and governments, let's remember that the
truest application of this must find its home in us and in our
churches. We can begin revival in our land if we will commit to
daily prayer, weekly fasting, and hearts yearning for God to enter
our world and transform it.

PRAYER:
O God, Father of all nations and peoples, please enter into our
world with clear signs of your power and grace. Call the lost to
you through us. Use us to be the firstfruits of renewal and
restoration. In Jesus' name. Amen.
